Just a hint: Lower the dual feed foot on your Pfaff. It will help with keeping seems straight and will definitely help with top stitching. When I had a Pfaff, I almost never raised it. The blouse turned out beautiful!
Great job! And nobody will see the wonky topstitching unless you point it out to them. Even I mess it up and I've been sewing for what feels like a few centuries (but closer to 50 years). I have a saying up on one door of one of my fabric cabinets that reads, "If no one can see you sins, they don't exist." And anyone who gets close enough to see it is probably violating boundaries. And I used to have that book years ago, but I've moved so many times since the last time I saw it that I doubt it exists any more.
Your ironing board cover is so pretty! I think the white-blouse-and-dark-walking-skirt look was a VERY SPECIFIC look that just happened to get a lot of press. White and light colours are good for summer, but I've determined that, if I ever make one of those floofy Victorian blouses or dresses intended for summer wear, I'm dyeing it light blue. I think I want a version of the Armistice blouse in black. White is just - bleh. Pin cauldron?! That's awesome! The shirt looks so good, and the colour is amazing!
That actually looks really comfortable and is a superb colour on you. Can totally empathise with the origami struggle of plackets, the number of times I get them really nice only to find I've done them the wrong way around!
First, I love your hedgehog pincushion. Second, my whole family, including my 80 year old mom, play D & D in a family campaign led by my 20-something daughter. Finally, the blouse turned out really nicely! It’s a great color and a really pretty shape on you.
I think this looks great!! Well done!! Please do not get discouraged by sleeve plackets or any placket. I found they just take a bit of practice using muslin. Do 4 to 6 of them with the intention of learning and getting better and you will get the hang of it. I had to learn them in design school. When the work is not attached to a “garment project” the learning is less daunting. Can’t wait for your next video!! 😊

I made myself a victorian gentleman's shirt this summer and there is always something else to do with shirts. They are surprisingly hard work. (Granted I hand sewed the whole thing bc I hate myself apparently)
I love that color on you. As an older goth type person with no idea what season I am, the only thing I've learned is that I look good in jewel tones, terrible in khaki and orange (like I'm dead) even pastels of khaki green or peach is a freak show. My compromise is black outerwear with all the color stuff close to my face. As for cottagecore? I found a new one, Whimsigoth! Yep, whimsical goth. I found the dark academia too gray, witchcore too plants based(my plants die), and pastel goth is just meh.
Well done! My sewing area is upstairs so I don’t work during a heat wave period. I never thought to use that kind of pattern weight. There’s always lots of those here. The cats don’t let me in the door without their canned food! I did colour analysis in the early 80’s and some makeup for local fashion shows. Having no control over the clothing colour on my models, I was able to compensate with makeup. Anyone can wear most any colour, it depends on the shade and, like you say, the look you are going for.
Makeup was my compensation tool for years as well...unfortunately, I can't wear a lot of it. Sensitive skin and a complexion that rarely matches a foundation without looking streaky or like my face is dirty will do that. I'm a fan of a good blush and translucent powder combo 😁
Gorgeous Maire! I remember my mum doing my colours too. According to her I was a summer because only summer's have blue rings under their skin (blue-ringed octopus, anyone?). Nope - I have yellowish undertones and tan up to quite an olive shade. And I love blacks, deep burgandy, blue, greens, turquoises...
Lol! Mum was annoyingly accurate...and almost always correct. I've come to appreciate the tools she's given me, but on my own terms. It doesn't stop me from wearing what makes me happy 🙂
I had not heard about Dame Judi gaming, but that's super exciting! I'm jealous of your machine. I too was a gothy Spring, and when I did eventually save up (in the 90s) to buy a fancy gothy/corseted dress with swoopy lace-trimmed sleeves from Fashion Crimes in Toronto it was burgundy. I love that dress to this day, though I have no idea if I fit in it. It lives next to my wedding dress.
By the way, your Countryside Blouse is lovely and looks great on you! I am making one, but like yours, it's been in time out for a while when I got distracted with job stress & the need to make TH-cam video series for 3 different sewing projects during the worst of COVID that my students could do at home. Your comment about the placement of the placket being in an odd/unusual spot is likely related to the more modern practice in ready-made clothes of just putting it in the underarm seam because it is cheaper to do that than the more vintage or historical placement of a wrist opening. If you think about the shape of kirtle sleeves, or 18th-century sleeves, there is usually a more curved sleeve with the seam set more toward the back to accommodate the way arms naturally fall when relaxed.
Hello, I’ve just finished and worn the same pattern blouse, and it did take longer than I thought it would. Yes, Truly Victorian patterns are more size inclusive in general but it is a fiddle having to do the admittedly simple maths to get the “ adjusted front” and “ adjusted” back widths , and I have narrow shoulders so I always have to make more adjustments in the shoulder/sleeve pattern also. What I didn’t like about it were the sleeves, because the cuffs are small IF you use the “elbow” length option. I barely had enough fabric in the first place because, firstly I hate to waste fabric so buy as little as possible and never use the pattern company’s suggested layout (usually they have you waste more fabric than not) and secondly, as this was a new pattern for me, I wanted to use stash fabric that I wouldn’t mind going in the ‘fabrics /ufo/ hot fails fabric stash to make into quilting projects. But, it did work out eventually, and I managed to be somewhat pleased with the garment. What I would change is the gathering in the back, because with a narrow frame and large bust, the back gathers come out giving me a peculiar kyphotic hump in the middle of my back. I did love your rant about pattern companies at the beginning because it has been what I have been frustrated about for years. I have made my own bodice block and whilst it helps for corset patterns it is still a process that takes time I haven’t got because there are only a few hours in a day that I can do sewing/ crafts, due to us having large dogs to walk who want (need) long, long walks and that is hard on my joints due to long term arthritis. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It is very helpful, and I would love to see more. 😊

Having just put a pair of pants for my husband in indefinite time out i totally feel for you on this project. Sometimes the instructions or design just sabotage you. I do think your blouse turned out great.

Yay for more shenanigans! Boo to a heatwave! Hey Woman!. How is life treating you up in canoe country? Seen any insane-in-the-membrane moose? We're doing well. Mister Husband is back to work this morning, so hopefully it won't be too many 12 alarm fires kind of day. I'm doing well in Post-surgery Recovery Department. The mammogram people found a pre-/non-cancerous lump in the right. Given family history, I'd rather not get a yearly update on it's growth or lack-there-of. So last Monday I was in for day-surgery and have had to lay off anything of weight since then. Which means I haven't been fishing in what feels like absolute ages. Le sigh. I've figured out the next sewing project - converting a thrifted existing navy and gold specked Indian skirt into a walking skirt (in absolute love with it, even if it was worn by someone a full foot taller, been meaning to do a re-do for years & years). I'm hoping to be done in time for the Pride parade at the end of the month. Indian walking skirt, Doc Martin's, local tee shirt and a hat and sun parasol and colour me done... Excellent news department - the Trucker-convoy-inspired 'rolling thunder' protest only gathered slightly less than 60 bikes. No embarrassment like a public one (the schadenfreuden is strong with this one...). The court appearances for the convoy organizers start in September, so hopefully no stupid free-dumb shenanigans will be inspired to re-occur. Hopefully it will take the air out of the sails of the Jan 6th-wanna-be crowd... so help me if I see another 'confederate' flag flapping around this neighbourhood... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Recovery is a pain but as you say much better than watching and waiting to see if things change. I ended up not going. I sent the family instead and had a week off. No demands and working on a few things around here. It was actually nice. The skirt sounds lovely. I’m sure that the outfit will be great. I’m also very hopeful that the idiots don’t get too out of hand. They really need to go back to what ever rock they crawled out from under.

You persevered and it looks great! Really nice color. The blouse looks like an intense project. I stick to more medieval styles of clothing where I can happily flee from plackets. On the D&D, I missed that whole thing by being born in the wrong country for that and arriving at an odd age where I totally missed learning about it until I was almost 30. I was very confused when introduced to the concept, and honestly still confused by most of it.
Ngl, having struggled with plackets before I definitely would have noped out of that and just done my own thing on the sleeve seam 😂 because despite having actually gone to art school I still cannot topstitch a straight line to save my life. you are a braver soul than I ❤ and it looks pretty darn great honestly
@@MaireColclough I’ve taken to using watercolor pencils lately and they have been really helpful getting finer lines (I’ve had them 5ever for art reasons and they have only now gotten used lol) Also I feel you on the pattern drafting front, I love Bianca’s pattern alteration videos because I find them helpful given that I’m always just pulling a Mood pattern that’s close to what I want and then just making alterations, but her block drafting videos are based on like 0-18 standard sizes and would still require a bunch of skewing for a 24-26 like me. The alternative I’ve kind of put on the back burner is to make up a purchased shell pattern and just fit/alter it until its actually my size, so if you wanted a block that is something you could try. I have butterick 5628 that goes up to 32 but I’ve seen printables on etsy with even more of a range.
I also struggle with the very real gap between firing alterations for straight sizes, and fitting for plus (*my) size and shape, with FBA, sway back, short, etc, etc, etc. Honestly, I think the most accurate basic blocks for me would be of someone draped them on me, such as that Costuming Drama video when Abby and Nicole draped "shapes" for her. But I don't have an Abby or Nicole in my life, so I'm just on a years-long mission to work my way into basic blocks that don't look terrible
I'm considering the possibility of the Mother-in-Law's old adjustable mannequin stuffed into a bootstrap dress form so I can get a body double that's closer to my size. 😃
It turned out to be adorable! The color really is great. The frustration may have been less were it cooler out but kudos to you on persevering! It isn't easy to handle cursed projects and you only threw it at the wall once! I call that a win. :)
So, first, I just plain enjoyed the video. Second, I really appreciate you showing that even someone as experienced and knowledgeable as yourself still gets challenged. And third, I just like how it came out. The main sewist I follow who makes her own patterns has a big bust to waist differential (like me- I started following her to learn how to address that problem). Her waist to hip is no joke either. She makes her own patterns because she knows how and says it's quicker and easier for her to alter her block patterns that fit than fit every pattern. I read that color theory book way back when I was very young. I totally get how it could help a lot of pale women, but it's so racially biased that pretty much everyone who isn't white _and_ those who are but have tan or olive undertones are all given the same limited winter palette. Which is an ok palette, but it basically says only pale white people who don't have olive undertones can wear most colors without looking bad. I didn't really care, as someone who rarely goes beyond black, red, burgundy,and clear blues, but I found the bias laughably useless to me as a kid. To put it in context, it gave the same color advice to me as a medium toned African American, my friend as a very pale but olive undertoned Italian, and another friend as a medium tan skinned Iranian. It considered more nuance to pale skin, and considered most colors as only looking good on pale skin. Which is cool and all, but not really a great tool if you're lumped in that majority.
Thank you for commenting and letting me know not only about the other sewist you're following (and their patterning challenges), but your own experiences with colour analysis! I think a lot of the latter really hinges on the person doing the analysis, and their interpretation of skin tone, eye/hair colour...all the nuances you mention. My experience came from having a mother with a fantastic eye for colour, and enthusiasm for working with people of diverse colours. I realize not everyone is that privileged, and often just have access to the highly edited words on a page. (I'm not saying she was always right, but it happened often enough to be highly annoying). That said, I hope you were able to find the colours that works for YOU, whether or not it came from a "viral" (for the 80's) pop-culture craze book. 💕

I'm never good at stich in the ditch either.. or plackets. Also I can not let myself work past 9:30-10pm.. I ALWAYS make a major F up if I work too late (the take 2+ hours to fix sort).. which sucks when I'm trying to finish a piece last minute

@@devh6168 As I said...most shirtwaists seem fairly similar. I wouldn't be surprised if you can find one that suits you from another patternmaker. If I hadn't already purchased and cut out the pattern almost 2 years ago, I might have tried sizing up one of Black Snail's blouses 🙂
It may have been frustrating to work on, but at least the result looks nice. So that's a win. I had my colours done in the early 90s and the poor person who did it came to the conclusion they were missing a set. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Teddy the latter one, containing all the brightest colours from the others (except yellow which REALLY doesn't suit me, so it's a shame I love the colour and wear it anyay)

I have made my own bodice block and whilst it helps for corset patterns it is still a process that takes time I haven’t got because there are only a few hours in a day that I can do sewing/ crafts, due to us having large dogs to walk who want (need) long, long walks and that is hard on my joints due to long term arthritis.

Having just put a pair of pants for my husband in indefinite time out i totally feel for you on this project. Sometimes the instructions or design just sabotage you. I do think your blouse turned out great.

While the pretty movie-like videos are nice, sewing just isn't really like that most of the time. At least not for me and it's nice to know that others share that journey.

We're doing well. Mister Husband is back to work this morning, so hopefully it won't be too many 12 alarm fires kind of day.
I'm doing well in Post-surgery Recovery Department. The mammogram people found a pre-/non-cancerous lump in the right. Given family history, I'd rather not get a yearly update on it's growth or lack-there-of. So last Monday I was in for day-surgery and have had to lay off anything of weight since then. Which means I haven't been fishing in what feels like absolute ages. Le sigh.
I've figured out the next sewing project - converting a thrifted existing navy and gold specked Indian skirt into a walking skirt (in absolute love with it, even if it was worn by someone a full foot taller, been meaning to do a re-do for years & years). I'm hoping to be done in time for the Pride parade at the end of the month. Indian walking skirt, Doc Martin's, local tee shirt and a hat and sun parasol and colour me done...
Excellent news department - the Trucker-convoy-inspired 'rolling thunder' protest only gathered slightly less than 60 bikes. No embarrassment like a public one (the schadenfreuden is strong with this one...). The court appearances for the convoy organizers start in September, so hopefully no stupid free-dumb shenanigans will be inspired to re-occur. Hopefully it will take the air out of the sails of the Jan 6th-wanna-be crowd... so help me if I see another 'confederate' flag flapping around this neighbourhood...

I ended up not going. I sent the family instead and had a week off. No demands and working on a few things around here. It was actually nice.

You persevered and it looks great! Really nice color. The blouse looks like an intense project. I stick to more medieval styles of clothing where I can happily flee from plackets.
On the D&D, I missed that whole thing by being born in the wrong country for that and arriving at an odd age where I totally missed learning about it until I was almost 30. I was very confused when introduced to the concept, and honestly still confused by most of it.
Ngl, having struggled with plackets before I definitely would have noped out of that and just done my own thing on the sleeve seam 😂 because despite having actually gone to art school I still cannot topstitch a straight line to save my life. you are a braver soul than I ❤ and it looks pretty darn great honestly
I cheated and chalked faint lines where I could. I nicked Dad's chalk pencils in 1994 and have been putting them to good use 😁
@@MaireColclough I’ve taken to using watercolor pencils lately and they have been really helpful getting finer lines (I’ve had them 5ever for art reasons and they have only now gotten used lol)
Also I feel you on the pattern drafting front, I love Bianca’s pattern alteration videos because I find them helpful given that I’m always just pulling a Mood pattern that’s close to what I want and then just making alterations, but her block drafting videos are based on like 0-18 standard sizes and would still require a bunch of skewing for a 24-26 like me. The alternative I’ve kind of put on the back burner is to make up a purchased shell pattern and just fit/alter it until its actually my size, so if you wanted a block that is something you could try. I have butterick 5628 that goes up to 32 but I’ve seen printables on etsy with even more of a range.
I also struggle with the very real gap between firing alterations for straight sizes, and fitting for plus (*my) size and shape, with FBA, sway back, short, etc, etc, etc. Honestly, I think the most accurate basic blocks for me would be of someone draped them on me, such as that Costuming Drama video when Abby and Nicole draped "shapes" for her. But I don't have an Abby or Nicole in my life, so I'm just on a years-long mission to work my way into basic blocks that don't look terrible
I'm considering the possibility of the Mother-in-Law's old adjustable mannequin stuffed into a bootstrap dress form so I can get a body double that's closer to my size. 😃

So, first, I just plain enjoyed the video. Second, I really appreciate you showing that even someone as experienced and knowledgeable as yourself still gets challenged. And third, I just like how it came out.
The main sewist I follow who makes her own patterns has a big bust to waist differential (like me- I started following her to learn how to address that problem). Her waist to hip is no joke either. She makes her own patterns because she knows how and says it's quicker and easier for her to alter her block patterns that fit than fit every pattern.
I read that color theory book way back when I was very young. I totally get how it could help a lot of pale women, but it's so racially biased that pretty much everyone who isn't white _and_ those who are but have tan or olive undertones are all given the same limited winter palette. Which is an ok palette, but it basically says only pale white people who don't have olive undertones can wear most colors without looking bad. I didn't really care, as someone who rarely goes beyond black, red, burgundy,and clear blues, but I found the bias laughably useless to me as a kid. To put it in context, it gave the same color advice to me as a medium toned African American, my friend as a very pale but olive undertoned Italian, and another friend as a medium tan skinned Iranian. It considered more nuance to pale skin, and considered most colors as only looking good on pale skin. Which is cool and all, but not really a great tool if you're lumped in that majority.
Thank you for commenting and letting me know not only about the other sewist you're following (and their patterning challenges), but your own experiences with colour analysis! I think a lot of the latter really hinges on the person doing the analysis, and their interpretation of skin tone, eye/hair colour...all the nuances you mention. My experience came from having a mother with a fantastic eye for colour, and enthusiasm for working with people of diverse colours. I realize not everyone is that privileged, and often just have access to the highly edited words on a page. (I'm not saying she was always right, but it happened often enough to be highly annoying).
That said, I hope you were able to find the colours that works for YOU, whether or not it came from a "viral" (for the 80's) pop-culture craze book. 💕

I'm never good at stich in the ditch either.. or plackets. Also I can not let myself work past 9:30-10pm.. I ALWAYS make a major F up if I work too late (the take 2+ hours to fix sort).. which sucks when I'm trying to finish a piece last minute

The placket on these sleeves are ridiculous! I’ve made this blouse 3 times, so I should know. I just used twill tape for the ties. So much easier.

I had my colours done in the early 90s and the poor person who did it came to the conclusion they were missing a set. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Teddy the latter one, containing all the brightest colours from the others (except yellow which REALLY doesn't suit me, so it's a shame I love the colour and wear it anyay)
The issues with yellow lead me to believe you're likely a Summer Teddy or Winter Teddy, then...at least, that would be Mum's best guess. 😁
