We have been conditioned to dislike our hair and to try to make it look like something that it's not. Although I've been natural, this time around, for over two years, I wore mostly crochet hairstyles. In May of this year, I watched a video discussing the toxicity of synthetic braiding hair and decided to only wear my hair or human extensions (from time to time). Recently, I decided to invest the time and effort to care for and learn about my scalp and hair needs. Washing and caring for my own hair is definitely paying off. My hair is flourishing more than it ever has. This has been a journey, but I'm learning so much, especially about how the hair industry has capitalized on our insecurities regarding our hair.
Heavy on “the hair industry has capitalized on our insecurities regarding our hair” bc whew 🫠 Also, synthetic hair is toxic??? I haven’t worn braids in well over a decade but dang!
I think you may be on to something about the frequent hair washing. It makes me think of Anthony Dickey’s daily washing advice where he was stressing how it will keep our hair hydrated and soft and more manageable. But then there was back lash from some about the cowashing method of itself. Recently Jenn Jackson featured some research from kinkyhairchemistry that was also for frequent hair washing but how it could really improve scalp health. Her point was if the scalp is clean, you would be giving your scalp the best chance to grow the best quality hair. But this topic is so new and hard for most of us to grasp there’s hardly any information on it because it’s so opposite of what we’ve been told about how to care for our hair especially if we’ve had relaxed hair. And it honestly might not work for everyone. Kelsia’s diary made a recent video that made me think that maybe a part of why it’s hard to think and try frequent hair washing could stem from the trauma of our past and the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. Thank you for talking about this topic, you’re one of the few that’s advocating for this type of hair and scalp care .
You’re welcome and that is why I’m so radical about it. It works and I’m defying every lie that we have been told. I don’t advocate for co-washing. I keep it simple. Wash hair the way the products direct us to wash our hair. Shampoo. Conditioner. That’s it. Thanks for sharing!
You are speaking truth! My natural hair is SO EASY! I wash once a week and take my time to condition and I do a monthly protein treatment. Daily it takes me 5 minutes to style my hair depending on if it needs some product or a refresh with water. I could have saved myself so much time, money, and pain if I had gone natural years ago. I keep my hair fairly short and I love it! ❤❤❤
Love the straight forward nature of the title and your message. I have told women this over the years and they look at me like I’m crazy. I think silk presses, braids and weaves are harder to maintain and downright stressful. I don’t worry about rain or visiting the pool - EVER! That aura emits easy going and carefree which is so appealing as a young lady in this day and age.
Listen! “Carefree and effortless” is the only aura I want and need in my life. I actually look forward to a little rain, very calming and the humidity is good for my hair and skin
The key is never let your hair get tangled in the first place ladies if you do it often it wont be tangled. curly hair is high maintenance 🤷🏽♀️ I would recommend Anthony dickey from hair rules look up his method its the best one out there for type 4 girlies ❤
I agree. We've been convinced that combing our hair is bad which is a lie. Stop finger detangling and actually comb your hair. Using rollers actually helps it to not get tangled too much too. Also make sure your ends are trimmed regularly.
You have beautiful hair, I love it. I googled if black people can wash their hair everyday because I always thought that it just didn't make sense of the reasoning I've always received. I hear the texture is different and doesn't allow the sebum to travel down the hair... The thing is, most men and many white people wash their hair everyday. Sebum isn't traveling anywhere on any of our hairs. I know when non black people don't wash for a few days, it stinks. After 5 days, it smells so bad. The person with that hair generally don't smell it, but everyone behind the person smells it. Anyways, thanks for the updates on your hair on each of the videos. It looks so good and looks like it would feel wonderful to the touch.
right. We never question hair washing when men do it lol. You’re so welcome! As far as how my hair my hair feels - you’re right! Thanks for the compliment and supporting me. 😊
When I go more than a week without washing my scalp physically hurts because of all the oil. I don’t know how people go longer. When I try to go two weeks, I feel like ripping my scalp off
Exactly 👏🏽👏🏽 I wear my hair blown out and straight now most of the time but when I was a full time curly girl I washed my hair daily and my hair was cute everyday and NEVER tangled ! Everyone thought I was nuts for washing my hair everyday 😂 but I knew I was on to something I did the Anthony dickey method. Only reason I stopped was because of them single strand knots and I like to brush my hair and I wanted to enjoy my actual hair length lol I had to keep cutting my length after wearing wash n gos. Even now as a straight hair natural I wash my hair every 6-7 days
It would be easy if detangling wasn't such a pain. I've tried all the best brushes and wide tooth combs, the slippiest conditioners/prepoos, and a brush will not glide through my hair with ease. That's the biggest problem I've faced on my NHJ, and it is just about the biggest issue I think any girl transitioning to natural will face. It took me years to figure out and finally come to the conclusion that finger detangling is for my tender-head self. I've been doing it for two years now, and I'm almost to waist-length. And i don't experience near as much breakage as I did with brushes.
Let us leave the struggle bus for those willing to be on it. There being an open seat does not mean it is meant for you. When you decide to walk to your destination instead, the bus ends up in a construction zone while trying to take unnecessary detours. After all, the destination is just right down the street. It is what it is.
Caveat at 11:40 - if you wear your hair natural but keep it stretched, and gently dry detangle every so often, you can minimise tangles with that routine and not wash your hair super frequently (as long as you're taking care of your scalp health too) because you're still removing the shed hairs so that you don't have to deal with matting when it is time to wash again. Other than that, you make a lot of great points! I've been blessed to handle and care for curly/coily textures both looser and tighter than mine, and with the right tools, products, and techniques, it's literally a breeze! 😊
Friendly reminder that oil doesn’t moisturize hair. Water does. There’s always going to be oil on the shaft of our hair strands, when you can actually feel it in your fingers is when it’s in excess and it’s overdue for a wash.
@laurendilaurentis6467 it doesn't - there’s a common misconception that our hair doesn’t produce oil, but no one's hair produces oil - but your scalp does! The challenge is that the natural oils have a harder time traveling down the hair shaft compared to straight hair. That's why straight hair is visibly oily but with coily hair not so much. In some ways I can only imagine not washing your hair is worse if you have tighter curls because the oil literally has nowhere to go. Many Black people also experience oily skin, for instance. I know I do Regularly washing your scalp helps cleanse it and prevent clogged pores, which in turn promotes healthier hair growth. Water is a vital source of hydration for your hair, and conditioning afterward locks in that moisture. If you like, you can add oil to your ends for extra moisture or use a serum or leave-in conditioner. When you wash your hair regularly you can massage your scalp and even spread sebum to your ends if you like alot of people do this. Remember, your scalp is skin too, just like the rest of your body. Imagine applying moisturizer without washing your skin first. Not only would it feel unpleasant, but it could also lead to skin issues. So keeping your scalp clean and hydrated is key to healthier hair - I had to learn the hard way. I don't wash my hair every because I like to utilise the sebum but washing every 2-3 days for me is chefs kiss and I've seen a difference in my hair strands 100%
