  • Is the Marshall Mg10 a Good Practice Amp
    Time for some wood shedding. Is this amp, the Marshall Mg10, a good practice amp? Yrs, it's great because of how bare bones and basic it is. It can easily show you all of the imperfections in your playing to help you polish your chops effectively. It's solid state, so you can rely on this thing working for years to come. It has your basic two channels, clean and dirty alongside a contour knob which helps you dial in your eq. Lastly it comes with a headphone jack to keep your neighbors happy, and a input jack which works well with mp3 players, phones, and amp modelers.
    I'd say the Marshall mg10 is quite a good practice amp, it really gives you the options to practice in anyway you'd like especially if you add a amp modeler into the mix. Even without one, you're going to get a decent no frill practice tone out of this amp, that will help take your playing to the next level.

      The new ones have a hiss to them even on the clean is that true for these older ones too? or are these better

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just tested my amp out, it has your typical amp hum on both channels (more noticeable on the distorted channel), but it doesn't really hiss. It's an early 2000's model. I think the MG line in general has been using cheaper and cheaper parts as time goes on. I hear the same complaint about the MG Heads as well.

    • @g.sferrazza10-13

      @@DustinAlford thanks I meant the hum, sorry have you ever used the emulated out for recording? Any good?

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@g.sferrazza10-13 It's totally a hummer of an amp even with the line out. I haven't recorded with it because it really can be quite noisy. If you were to record with it though you could always throw a vst noisegate into your daw afterwards to act as if you had one going through an fx loop that this amp doesn't have or just throw a physical one in between the line out of the amp and your interface. The clean tone is generally decent in terms of hum.

    • @g.sferrazza10-13
      @g.sferrazza10-13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAlford wow so even the emulated line out hums... so that means whatever component causes the noise is in the pre-amp stage prior or during tone shaping that sucks... the manual says to just put a jack on the phones out for quiet recording but i guess that only takes car of the speaker not the hum...

    Have tons of practice amps, but always seem to gravitate back to the little mg-10. There is just something about it that has that little bit of unique sound that the others seem to be missing. Its like a bad relationship in that you know you should walk away and find somebody better, but you just can't resist the good over the bad. Love the little marsh!

      @DustinAlford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does get a bit shrieky when cranked very loud, I'd suggest a 50 watt or above if you ever want to play with a drummer. It works very well with a multi fx pedal. As for which amp, an Orange or a Marshall, it all just comes down to what you like best. I use both and they are honestly just as good as each other. The Marshall does has a channel switch though to go between distortion and clean and that really helps out for practicing, the Orange crush 12 doesn't so it may be a bit bothersome unless you use pedals for your distortion.

      I just checked my Mg10 and I don't get a hiss with nothing plugged in and with the knobs down. I do however get hiss when I am on the distortion channel and have the gain past 12. Hiss is normal for this amp but I think you might need to look into your amp's issue a bit further if it is still hissing with nothing in it and with the knobs down. Maybe check for ac hum or grounding loops first and if that doesn't resolve it then I'd personally bring it to a pro to see if it's a wiring issue. Best of Luck!

    so the cd input acts like a fx loop when you plug in your modulation effects?

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in a traditional sense where you can put effects after the preamp of your amp while still using the preamp of the amp for your main sound. It works similar to plugging your guitar and a effect in to only one side of an fx loop so that you can bypass the preamp and play strictly off the power amp. It's missing the second output needed for it to actually be used as a real fx loop.

      The fly has a few more features like delay and the ability to use batteries. In terms of tone and sound though, I'd say the fly slays the mg. The fly's distortion channel seems much more focused then the mgs. It is noisier then most amps I've played. I think it's mainly the preamp because I have no problems with it when using an fx unit plugged straight into the cd input. If this unit had a fx loop, using a noise gate through one would completely obliterate the noise. That said all of the other Mg's I've used that were 15 watts and up didn't hiss as bad as this amp can. It depends on how much gain your pedal has. For pedals I usually use a super clean channel with the least amount of gain possible with the treble bass and mids at 12 o'clock and the put the pedal in front of the amp. Depending on your pedal you might need to dime the distortion knob on the pedal. As for the eq I generally go for a balanced tone usually bass at 12, mids at 10 or 11, and treble at 1 for cut. Check out my other videos on distortion pedals to help you find a good setup. Every pedal is different so it's hard to tell you what to exactly do with your setup.

      It works well both with high output pickups as well as with pedals. I use mine everyday with an o.d. in front of it.

      Hey if it's not too much trouble, could u tell me about the blackstar fly amp?

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremiedsouza6703 The fly is a great amp as well from what I have heard and seen. I have never played it. It has a more focused modern sound to it then the mg. It also can run off of batteries for traveling and has built in delay as well. The biggest difference between the mg and the fly is that the fly is quieter coming in at 3 watts and the mg is the louder of the two at 10 watts.

    Can you help me chose betwen this amp or yamaha ga15ii pliss replay

      @DustinAlford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking between the two they both are very similar. The Yamaha has a three knob eq though and would be much easier to dial a good tone in with. The Marshall has a one tone knob eq and can be bothersome compared to a 3 band eq. The Yamaha looks like the overall better deal to me. Best of luck!

    what's the difference between this and a vox headphone amplifer? would the vox amp sound better? does more watts mean it sounds better? sorry for asking a lot i just bought a new guitar 🎸😂

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The headphone amp doesn't have a speaker to output noise. Wattage generally refers to how much electric it uses but most guitarist think about in equivalence to it's loudness. The headphone amp or this should sound pretty good overall, it just comes down to if you want to use headphones or not.

      @@DustinAlford thanks lmao, I made my mind up and I don't care what the neighbours think about me so I ain't using any headphones amp 😂. I found someone selling a used Vox Pathfinder 10 for a good price (80$) and a used Fender 15CE for only 90$. What do you recommend? Fender's reputation is really making me hesitate 🤔

      @@professorwhite7634 I'd probably go with the pathfinder unless the Fender is a 90's amp or older. The cheap Fender practice amps got pretty bad around the 2000s.

      @@DustinAlford Ooh i see. Thanks, I was also siding towards the Vox Pathfinder 10. I haven't discovered what I'm into but I'm pretty sure im more of a blues guy and it would sound great on the Vox amp. I really don't have anyone to talk with my same interests so I'm glad communities like these exist 😂❤️
