The Pathfinder is great, I used to own the guitar version, and now use the bass version(yea, it works beautifully for guitar too!) I’m more interested in the cleans, and the Pathfinder series is superb for that. Honestly, the gain channels on all of these small practice amps are pretty much the can ‘o bees type, but if you dial in a great tone on the clean channel, then use the pedal of your choice, things get MUCH better.

I own this little Marshall with a curious history. I went to a guitar shop to buy a new guitar and tested several of them, all that guitars sounded so great and I though myself my guitars were crap. Then I've bought a nice one, came home so excited to play, but at the first strum I've realized that my new guitar also sucked out. I came back to the guitar shop and then found out what was gone. I felt in love for the amp, not for the guitar. This little box is amazing.

    1. Marshall - Overall best sounding and versatile. Cleans were surprisingly good. Distortion is obviously going to be there b/c it's a Marshall
    2. Orange - It was tough between this and VOX for me but Orange seemed better and more versatile to my ears. Brighter sounding.
    3. Vox - I feel like you are either going to love it or hate it. It felt too muffled (if that's the right word) like someone put a blanket over the sound. - Though it had the best clean sounds to me.
    4. Fender - I know their higher end amps are good but this practice amp is really really bad

Yeah. But for a guy like me, I am a beginner, haven’t found my playing style or sound and cannot judge better just by listening. I just bought a Fender Frontman 20G. I immediately upgraded the stock wimpy 'Fender Special Design' 8 inch speaker with a Jensen C8R. Huge improvement. The visual difference between the two is astonishing.

    • @margarethouse404
      @margarethouse404 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This .
In the test segment with Line Out , the Fender Frontman was significantly Less Worse than thru the speaker . The speaker is definitely the limiting factor .
Undoubtedly it would be much improved with with a speak upgrade . The stock speaker can do cleans with both tone knobs centered . But move up or down , and tone quickly gets thin and weak .
I suspect a major portion of Frontman 10 W amps are sold as part of starter combo packs . Hard to imagine someone delibertly paying suggested retail price for one .
If you aquired it for " free " , or someone gave it to you after they upgraded amps , or you paid $20 for it used , it could be worth it to swap speakers .
If you're buying new at list price ; take the price of the amp , plus price of decent replacement speaker , and just get a less worse amp in the first place .
On that theme - As a catagory . basic SS 15W practice amps are much better sounding than their 10W counterparts .

If you're new to amps, make sure you demo both solid state AND tube amps at your local guitar shop. Tubes tend to be more expensive and require more maintenance, but I prefer the tone. Marshall did a good thing and put some filter circuit that takes out the sizzle and beefs up the sound, like something similar to a speaker simulator. It makes the small speaker handle the distortion better, because speakers smaller than 10" are shit on high gain. It's nice to see that Marshall's solid state designs got better.

I just bought the Marshall MG 10 because of this video! I'm a new player and was working with an Acoustic G20. It's ok, it was enough to get me started, but i'm starting to really care about sound and it just wasn't doing it for me anymore. Love it so far though!

In real life, I always wanted Marshall but ended up a Vox man. I hear more gain and fuller sound all around with the Vox.
Crazy how different we hear things.

The Orange sounds the best to me. It seems to have a little bit more depth to the sound than the others.

The Marshall seems like the best all-rounder and it does a decent job at emulating the sound of a more expensive Marshall in a cheap package. It's a bit characterless but I would have loved it when I was starting out.
With that said, I like the Vox best - it has its own shouty character and seems like a lot of fun.
The Fender and the Orange both sound dreadful to me!

I was surprise from the massive sound of MG10 here. Although Crush 12 doesn't sound good here, Crush 20 has best to offer. Great demos as always!

Marshal wins this series. Vox comes in at a solid 2nd. Orange in 3rd and Fender at a distant 4th. Great video btw, no blah and straight to business.

Very excellent comparison! I used my phone with ear buds to hear them more clearly. The Marshall, in my opinion sounded the best with the Orange next then the Vox. The Fender, well, it's a 'no go'. It is a very budget amp and you get what you pay for in that area with it. You start out learning with it then you give it to your little brother because you don't like him. Skål! 🎸😀👍
