As a foreigner, This is my impression of why "Divas" seem to dominate the Philippines. I feel that some people of the Philippines like the competitive nature of singing. Thats why there are so many singing contests. They look at the performers on technicality and who has more "talent " versus in America which is who has talent but also charisma, likability, or superstardom potential and appeal. But in America tastes are so varied, sex appeal esp teen girls who love talent shows love to vote on cute male singers versus not cute ones or female ones. Plenty of American male singers dont have the best range, but the voice (sexy and smooth), a guitar/piano player and a cute face helps will help propel them versus a singer who singers super high and belts and can do a marathon of riffs and runs. Among female foreign singers. Your goal is not to be compared to another well known singer. Thats the kiss of death. The Divas we all know are not the same. Adele, Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Jessie J, Ariana, Christina, Cher, Britney, Kelly, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Patti, Aretha, Janis, Florence Welch, Diana Ross, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Taylor Swift and others. There is so much difference in music, singing style, sounds, and each has carved a niche in the music industry for themselves. Sometimes they milk their look. Ariana's long ponytail. Adele's beehive hair. Gaga's everything, You never really hear them doing covers of each others songs. Only great classic ones maybe like Respect. I'm every woman and such. But you hardly hear covers. They are creating their own diva-auras. I do feel, at least based on the what I see on TH-cam is that Philippine Divas are roughly cut from the same mold. It is like like each is trying to outcompete the others. How many different versions of Never Enough have been sung by the Divas? Or Beyonce's Listen? or I am telling you? or Mariah's songs or Whitney's version? or even the Buwan song? It is like take what is popular or has been done by everyone already and take a stab at it. So people can compare who did it better. Or take a foreign diva and try to match thier version or do it better. It seems like a competition for your entire career being compared to some other artists. Mori vs. Sarah. Jona vs. Regine. or whatever combinations. There is so much talent in the vocals but not much else. Why dont they learn to play instruments, write and compose and produce their own songs ONLY. Limit the cover songs. With such great voices, they can make songs that is theirs rather than rely on songs made famous by others as their signature song. Thats how I feel.
