Four of the Fougas were captured in their crates in the Congo and the Govt bought them off the UN and they were overhauled by Aerospatiale in France, the successor to Potez-Air Fouga. Two were bought from the Austrians ( 217 being returned to Austria as a museum donation). After overhaul, they were fitted with more modern navigation aids in Aer Lingus in Dublin Airport. They could also carry 68mm Matra rockets in a six shot pod under each wing. The engines in our Fougas were the more powerful Marbore VI F2 of 1050 lbs of thrust each. Magister is Latin for teacher. Their last act was to win the Canasta Trophy for aerobatic team excellence. They served us well and are fondly remembered to this day.

You're WRONG.. Firstly NONE of the were "captured" by anyone... 4 of the Irish fougas were former Austrian Air force machines and the other 2 were new build aircraft destined for Katanga but were NEVER delivered and were held in embargo by the French govt and when they were bought all 6 were stripped down and rebuilt from the ground up by Aerospatiale mechanics to give them an "as new" appearance.

There is no such thing as a "Canasta Trophy for aerobatic team excellence".
Instead, the Aer Corps won the Lockheed Martin Cannestra Trophy.

A pity they where never replaced. We could do with 6 more combat defensively capable jet’s nowadays.

The Air Corps Fouga's had Marbore VI engines, not 'Marbor II'.

Has anyone here ever seen the 'Silver Swallows' aerobatics team performing at an Irish Air Show?

Seen them perform at Cork airport at the opening off the runway extension in 1989. An Aer Lingus 747 also landed there that day to mark the occasion.
Also seen them perform the following year at the Shannon Air Spectacular 1990...

I served in the Air Corps and flew in 217 and 220, three times. Pilots were John Kelly, John Mulvaney and Graeme Martin, all Captains at the time. One of the flights was a practise routine for the Swallows.

Yes I saw them in Galway in Salthill maybe around 97 or 98. I think there were red arrows and other international jets there that day but for me the Fougas were a stand out display and on a par or better than the other international teams.

Shame Ireland doesn't have any jet fighters for defence against non-state actors, and a national embarrassment that they have to phone the RAF to defend Irish airspace. Ireland could now afford at least 6 Saab Griphen's (ie 3 ready for service, 3 in maintenance cycle).

    • @IrelandMade

We hear you! Apparently new fighters are “on order” but how long that will be is anyone’s guess.

Jet engines can be run on diesel fuel but it shortens time before overhaul.Usual fuel is kerosene which burns cleaner so less carbon build-up.Irish aircraft were powered by Marbore Vl which was more powerful than the II version but also more thirsty at around 125 gallons per hour at maximum power setting.
