Harry Ferguson - A Legacy of Innovation | Season 4 – Episode 81
👋 Hey followers! In this video, we are honouring the 64th anniversary of the untimely passing of Henry (Harry) George Ferguson on October 25th 1960.
Here at Ireland Made - Stories of Irish Transport, we consider him to be Ireland's greatest engineer and inventor, his work truly transformed the world and his legacy is still recognised today. Harry Ferguson raced motorcycles, revolutionised the modern tractor, became the first person in Ireland and Britain to build and fly his own plane and invented the Ferguson Formula 4x4.
We are Ireland Made® the Irish transport archive. Please sponsor our content creation via www.irelandmade.ie
⬇️ Have you ever visited Harry Ferguson's birthplace in County Down? Comment below ⬇️
Harry Ferguson was born in 1884 in Dromore, Co Down, and left school at 14 to work on the family farm. His passion for engineering emerged while working at his brother's garage in Belfast, where he also studied at night. Ferguson gained fame as a motor racing driver and in 1909, became the first person in Ireland or Britain to build and fly his own plane.
His focus then shifted to mechanising agriculture, leading him to create the Ferguson Black tractor in 1933, introducing the revolutionary three-point linkage system that transformed farming efficiency. In 1936, Ferguson launched the Ferguson Brown tractor and partnered with Henry Ford on a handshake to produce tractors in the U.S. Although the partnership ended in 1947 after Ford's retirement, Ferguson continued his work, starting production of the TO-20 tractor in Detroit in 1948 and winning a legal battle against Ford for breach of contract, though for very little in compensation.
Ferguson returned to the UK in 1946, producing the successful TE-20 tractor in Coventry, England and later selling his business to Massey Harris in 1953, creating Massey-Ferguson. He retired in 1954 after disagreements over the production of his TE-60 tractor but remained innovative, supplying tractors for Edmund Hillary's South Pole expedition in 1958. Unfortunately, after being injured during a burglary in 1957, his health declined, and he died in 1960 from a barbiturate overdose.
In 2008, the Harry Ferguson Memorial Gardens were officially opened across from the house where he lived, just outside Dromara, County Down. The gardens feature a life-size bronze sculpture depicting Ferguson leaning on a fence and overlooking the fields.
In the immortal words of Harry Ferguson (1884 - 1960) “Always the best and only the best”.
We have celebrated the work of Ireland’s greatest engineer and inventor with our video stories:

OUR FEATURED VIDEO: People from Ireland and developing countries love Massey Ferguson 100 series tractors | Season 2 - Episode 84
The launch of the 100 Series tractors in the mid-1960s had a significant impact, becoming popular in developing countries and still sought after at auctions in Britain and Ireland.
These tractors were crucial for MF to compete against new models from Ford, David Brown, and Nuffield. The MF 135, built in Coventry, featured a simple design with a 45-horsepower three-cylinder Perkins diesel engine and a straightforward six-forward, two-reverse speed gearbox. It offered a contemporary look and lightweight cab, making it ideal for Ireland’s boggy terrain.
MF 135 Specifications:
• Engine: 3-cylinder 2.5L Perkins diesel
• Power: 45 HP
• Drive: Two-wheel drive
• Gearbox: 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds

I've been riding dirt bikes for years, but going 90 MPH on the AJS 350 0:22 would be a bit daunting for myself..... LOL Thanks to Kevin and Ireland Made for keeping Irish history alive.

Hmmm...... Just thinking. I wonder if the flights went a little quicker flying east to west because of the rotation of the earth. Another enjoyable watch from Ireland Made. Well, it's midnight here and I have work tomorrow so time to hit the hay......

They had to fly against the prevailing winds so it was tougher flying east to west and many at that time thought these flights couldn’t be completed. Keep watching Ireland Made!
