  • This footage is very rare because they flew only 2 times in the UK
The Silver Sallows were formed in Ireland in 1986 .They flew with 4 Fouga Magisters.
Their display at RIAT 1997 was one of their last ones ,a few months later the Fouga was retired and so also the team.

Those sounds bring back memories. I don't live too fall from Baldonnel Aerodrome in Dublin where the Irish Air Corp are based, so the Fougas often flew over my house.

I saw these guys at the airshow in baldonnel in 1986 i think it was, the red arrows were their as well, i still remember the A10 Thunderbolt, the low flying aer lingus 747, the red arrows were really good, but when i saw the silver swallows i was amazed that they were irish. i had no idea at the time, they were just as good as the red arrows. 32 years later, i doubt the irish air corps will ever see jets again.

Fantastic video.one of the best display teams in the world...shame they are no longer with us...and perhaps its fitting that in their final year (1997) they won the "lockeed martin canestra trophy" for the best display by an overseas aerobatic team at riat 97....just goes to show that we irish really can mix it up with the best when we really want to.☺👍....and thank you for the video.

Its a shame the government doesn't increase the defense forces funding to just 1% of our annual GDP. This would allow the air corps to have a squadron of relatively cheap modern jet fighters like the M-346. Or even 5 F-35's (although I understand they are expensive).
It's just a shame that the air corps went from having these beautiful planes alongside de Havilland Vampire, Ye'know ACTUAL JET aircraft to not having any jet fighters at all, even Nigeria has some JF-17's...

I know it is such a shame and the thing is it wouldn't be that expensive at all to equip the Air Corps with a small squadron (6-10 aircraft) of light fighters which would be adequate for the country's air defence. Aircraft such as the Korean Aerospace/Lockheed Martin FA-50 would be the most ideal. costs roughly 27 million euro per unit and is capable of mach 1.5. These could be dual purpose, filling in the roles of advanced trainer and fighter aircraft in one package. If we wanted to save a bit more money the M-346FA could also be on the table for the role. Its honestly mad when you think about it really. When we were a dirt poor country we had fighter aircraft and now we have a GDP of almost 400 billion euro and yet not a single combat jet aircraft in sight. People will often use the argument of "we're neutral so we don't need jets" which is pure nonsense because the fact that we are neutral means we need to be able to defend ourselves at least at a basic level. Air defence is part of that. Neutrality comes with the responsibility to defend your neutrality. Other neutral countries within Europe i.e. Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Finland all have proper Air Forces. I will say in the case of Austria that the eurofighter was completely overkill for the job of air defence as it cost far to much to buy and far to much to maintain. Like you and I said earlier, we would only be interested in buying aircraft such as the FA-50 or the M346FA which are much cheaper per unit cost (you could buy 5 M346s for the price of one Eurofighter) and are very reasonable to operate when compared to the likes of an F35 or eurofighter.
