Is it really fly fishing? part1

  • This time I examine a few borderline "dark arts" associated with the fly fishing scene! Streamers, pike flies and euro nymphing are in the frame.
look out for part 2, where more dubious arts are exposed!
    enjoy!

This is my first season fly fishing as I have an abundance of small chalk streams locally and a friend who is a fly angler of many decades experience set me up with a 3wt rod. On enclosed shallow streams that are no more than 6’-8’ wide I’ve learned to bow & arrow cast and had my first little trout on a streamer. As time progresses I’ll get to master dry fly and “proper” casting. I get people may not think nymphing or streamer fishing is real fly fishing but it’s got me out with fly gear and catching with a desire to learn more so maybe not a bad thing in the grand scale of things.

Nothing feels as pure as presenting a dry fly but I think if you are into fly fishing all techniques with the fly rod feel relatively satisfying. Fly fishing is often the least efficient way to fish but I will often do it because it feels more satisfying. For example, using streamers on small overgrown rivers even though it feels silly missing so many great looking trout holes which could be easily cast to underhand with a spinning rod. I also went fly fishing for bass on the Ribble Estuary the other evening. There was a breeze up and I had my fly a lot less in the water and covered a lot less water than I would have with a spinning rod but nevertheless I like the challenge and the action of the casting!

My thinking exactly! Bass on fly is a great experience! I had some sport on the ribble estuary years back, but something happened with the mark and I've blanked the last few summers there! Who wants easy anyway???👍

    Hello Soul Trader!
I came to your channel via the boss micro 080 tutorial videos that I have found very helpful.
Now I also enjoy watching you fishing from the other side of the world!
I have the following question about the boss:
Can you change the stereo panning on stereo recorded tracks? And if yes how?
If I have a stereo guitar on tracks 3/4 it seems that I can only change/adjust one side with the pan control, either L with track 3 or R with track 4?!
    What am I doing wrong?
It's frustrating and the boss manual doesn't help!
Thank you very much if you can assist.
Greetings from another veteran in Australia...

Thanks for your kind words, Anne!
Unfortunately, I'm unable to help here, as I tend to record individual instruments in mono and adjust the pans individually.
What you are doing sounds a little advanced for my existing skills! Take care, some lovely UK spring fishing coming! 👍

It all depends on what your goal is. If you want to catch fish, then you will adapt to the conditions, examine what the fish are feeding on and try to use the best method on the day. If you want to catch Anglers, well that's another story...

Exactly, fishing for food or competition success is one thing, fishing to maximise pleasure is another!
When I started, nymph, wet fly, and dry fly were all fished from one rod, reel, and line. Nowadays its assumed that you need a different set up for each method. Good for the tackle business?! 😂

Youve opened a can of worms here, so to speak. I've always imagined euro nymphing developed in countries with drier climates where worms were harder to come by, whereas we had worms aplenty so had a ready alternative to fly fishing, old fashioned upstream worming. Now that was an enjoyable method back in the day.

      Yes, you're right there, mate!
Was a great small river method for salmon when we had snow few!
My very 1st trout was on upstream worm. It was great fun!

I think I take the view that if its within the rules of your fishery then choose whichever method YOU prefer, Ive tried all the variations you mention but I still keep coming back to the dry fly when I know other methods would catch more. I've come to the conclusion that it's as much about the enjoyment as the numbers and that I would be the worst competition angler ever😄 Congratulations on reaching 1k subs, not many get there so you must be doing something right👍

More or less my point, Chris!
I might not be the best angler but I'm definitely up there when it comes to enjoying my chosen method of the moment! Just had a stonker of a wild brown this afternoon, from a small pennine river - all the more pleasurable as it was stalked on dry fly!
Good banter on this one 👍👍

I feel that since dry fly fishing and nymphing are both engaging with the life cycle of aquatic insects and the Euronymphing technique just happens to be an effective way to present nymphs and larvae then I do not have a problem considering these two as both forms of fly fishing. The absence of the fly line in euro nymphing is irrelevant in my view, and the criticism of so-called simple weighted nymphs as lacking style is just silly. Streamer fishing on a fly rod in my view is not so much fly fishing as another way to use a fly rod and fly line. And why not! You mentioned that large streamers would work well on spinning gear - I agree and have done that when I was out with my son and had leant him my fly rod and at that stage did not have another fly rod for myself. The spinning rod just managed to throw the weighted little streamer and I caught a couple of nice brownies. So loading the spinning reel with lighter line and adding a little more weight to the streamer and I am sure that technique would work well and ideal for places where the water is shrouded in undergrowth and trees and no back cast is possible. And again, why not!
So in summary, any technique that uses imitation insects in wet or dry form in my view is fly fishing. The other things are additional ways to use a fly rod to catch fish.

A very detailed response, Joseph! Of course, why not enjoy euro nymphing if thats what you enjoy?

I caught my first trout on a fly last year from a stocked very small pool, last week i caught one from a large stocked reservoir i enjoyed both 👍 too my people act like what they are doing is better, best to just fish, as long as your happy and not hurting anyone crack on i say 👍 tight lines

Outside of what you enjoy, who cares what others do? If euro nymphers feel the romanticism of fly fishing using chuck and duck, who cares? I am in love with swinging wet flies. Even though it may not be the most effective method, there’s a romanticism in it that I enjoy. Judging others does nothing to enhance ones own joy.

Thanks for your comment! Yes it's quite unnecessary to criticise the pleasures of others! No malice intended here, just interesting to hear others views. I'm not very competent at euro nymphing although I've had a few fish. But I miss the actual casting motion.
Fishing for grayling in winter on a mixed fishery stretch of river,
I chatted with 2 euro nymphers who couldn't understand what pleasure I gained from trotting with a centrepin and float.
Yet to me, it's more pleasurable than short lining! On strictly game fishing waters it's usually fly only, so that dictates your options. 😊

@@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 it’s the most effective method for quantity for sure. But for overall quality of experience and challenge, not so much. If you want to catch up to 50 small fish in a an hour, give it a go. Not joking. In the right place it can be that effective if not more so.

No. A nymph isn't a fly, neither is a streamer or a booby or a zonker or whatever else. You can present them to the fish using a fly rod, but ultralight lure rods will do the same job. You said pretty much the same thing just as I was typing that. It's lure fishing with a rod that cost at least 5x as much as you needed to pay.

    • @soultrader57fishingandmusi25
      @soultrader57fishingandmusi25  หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes! I agree with that broadly, although I don't consider myself a purist as I dabble with many forms of angling.

      @thetattooedangler หลายเดือนก่อน

@@soultrader57fishingandmusi25 I'm not a purist or a snob, but using a weighted lure that drags along the bed is as far from fly fishing as you can get. I get that pike fishing on a fly rod is geat fun, but an 8 inch perch imitation made of glitter and googly eyes is only a fly if you squint really, really hard.
