    I really like the Blind Horse knives, Battle Horse knives, LT Wright knives and even the couple Bark Knives I have but to me the Survive GSO 5.1 and the 10 are the best looking and functioning knives on the market today

    I love my 4.1. I don't think you can order a 5.1 anymore, according to the Survive Knives website (as of 04/12/2018). Please correct me if I am wrong. Love your videos. Do you want to sell that 5.1?

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, the 5.1 is still waiting to go back into production, though I think some folk still have active pre-orders for the next run. I plan on keeping this 5.1, and you wouldn't want mine anyway, I have beaten it through sheet metal, soaked part of the blade in vinegar to try and induce rust, and I even SuperBlue'd part of the tang to create a colorful shallow patina, then knife gets used/beaten/experimented-on a lot ;)
      I now also have one of the new 4.1s and plan to do a similar video on it when I get the chance, have just been too busy :( Enjoy that 4.1, and thanks for watching!

    Do you know a good place (safe place) to buy a 5.1, second hand, so as to not have to wait forever? It has been nearly impossible for me to get my first one lol.

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fastest/easiest way is Bladeforums: www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/891-For-Sale-Production-Fixed-Blades-(Individual)
      Also check the surviveknives subforum 'heads-up' thread, folk there will post when they find S!K models available around the web: www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1359094-Survive!-Knives-Heads-Up/
      There is also a closed facebook fan-group used for selling/trading, you can find info about it on the bladeforums subforum
      There are some 'factory 2nd' knives available on the survive! website, but shipping right now is supposedly ~90 days which may or may not be accurate, I am waiting on one myself ;)
      Getting a S!K knife right now takes either patience or close attention. Buying off the website can guarantee exactly the configuration you want (steel, scale colors, etc.) but only if the knife is available to order, and it takes a long time to ship. Buying off bladeforums or facebook is easy and gets you the knife FAST but the knife you get is what someone else is willing to sell and may not be the exact configuration you were looking for *shrug*
      Good luck! They really are excellent knives.

    • @survivalofthefittest409
      @survivalofthefittest409 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for all the great info! Yea I want to get a used one so I dont have to wait all that time. As long as I can get the newest model 5.1 I dont care what color the scales or sheath are causes I can just order what I want from Survive! themselves and get that relatively quickly. I'm gonna check out the blade forums now! Fingers crossed and thanks once again!!
      Oh btw, is there a difference between a "Factory Second" & an "Ugly Betty" ? I keep hearing the two different terms but they sound like the same thing to me.

    I got to be honest ive watched this video like 20 times cause of how bad i want this knife and the set up you have LOL. Thats what i find myself doing is stumbling accross something really great that i want/need, but is not cheap in the slightest, and window shopping it until i spend all my money to get it haha. Its bad but it has led to one badass BOB i can tell you that. The one thing that was really holding me back on the GSO 5.1 was that in the older models they all had rounded off spines and in my head i figured if i was paying all that money it should have all the features i want it to have without me having to go out and spend a bunch more money to get it where i want. Well now the 5.1 does have all the features i wanted. Superb steel choice, sharp spine, divot hole in handle, nice spear point, i could go on and on. The last two sucky things are now the price is still close to $300 bucks for me and id have to wait probably have a year to get it after i spent the money which would drive me absolutely mad. Anyways i guess there was no real point to all this rambling except to say how envious i am of your knife rig. There is only a couple things i would have changed to make it perfect for me being the handles would be the camo micarta, bow drill divot in them as well, and a black sheath instead of green basically just to match my color scheme i already have with my gear buts those are just personal preference. OK im sorry i have written you a book and have not stopped typing somebody please shoot me..no dont, really that would not be cool. Ok in closing...cool blade.

    Great video Chiral! It's funny, I sold mine without even opening the box, after waiting all those months. In that time, my tastes shifted all the way over to full customs, & the SK knives have a few typical traits that have become deal breakers for me; such as jimping, any king of lanyard holes/pommels, & mechanical fasteners on the scales. That said, I've still got a Starter 4.1 coming, and I'm at least going to open the box on that one! I'm hoping I'll fall in love with it & just keep it as a user...the SKs just perform like no other, as you know....I'm just such a damn knife snob these days. But ya, my 4.1 is coming in red LM, so I have a feeling I'll be able to look past the stuff I don't dig & hold on to the knife. I'm glad you're enjoying your 5.1!!

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +scott sherman I hear you! I've been moving more toward S!K as my only production knives because of the excellent geometry, but customs can go further with that and cater to our particular tastes, which is why i frequent the maker's section on BF! Some amazing work being done by so many individuals out there.

    Great video, thanks C.G.! After this video did you resharpen it? If so what did you use and how long did it take you get the edge back to shaving sharp?

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Van Lurton This may sound strange, but after using it to cut apart the piece of gutter a couple more times, it still didn't show any dings/rolls/nicks, no visible glinting from a damaged edge. It wouldn't shave hair any more, nor would it push-cut newsprint, but it would cut printer paper just fine. So all i did was pass it over a DMT XF hone a few times per side until it push-cut newsprint and caught arm-hair and called that "good". I'm sure that if I damaged the edge enough to show a lot of glinting, it would have taken more effort, I'd've brought out my Aligner or a benchstone, but that wasn't necessary after the use shown in this video, and it hasn't been necessary since. The edge-bevel is narrow, very little metal needs to be removed to restore apex damage that is contained therein. I am very impressed. This knife has performed noticeably better than the 4.1 test-knife I previously tested.

      +Chamdar17 Thanks for the reply, does this knife have the new Peters heat treat or does it have the old heat treat?

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Van Lurton Survive! has been working with Peters HT and some other specialists to develop the best 3V protocol that can be used on large batches of knives. This knife has the latest iteration of that, a step up from the test-knife I recorded not too long ago, which was itself a step up from the older 3V models (pre-2016).
      I should specify that I haven't used 3V in other knives outside of S!K, but my understanding has been that the "industry standard" was followed by most production companies. Survive! has been willing to show the improvements achieved by their methods.

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Babak P It was a very long wait to receive my pre-order, longer than it is for some custom-made knives, but the wait was well worth it! The design and performance are well above that of similar tools on the market today, including many that are more expensive. If the wait is too much of a deterrent, there are certainly other options out there (including finding one on the secondary market), but I could afford to wait and am very happy I did :)

    I am elated to see you using a baton to cross cut through that log. I always laugh when I see people in their reviews, hacking away forever like it's a hatchet. I always think, why don't they use a baton and save their energy and make the work go faster. Love the video, keep up the good work.

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Texas Outdoors Thanks for watching and commenting.
      One thing I would note: in another video I do just hack away at the log with various knives, but specifically mention that it is to test the edge - trying to cut through a log that way with such a weak tool is a ridiculous waste of energy :) Then again, some might argue that cross-cutting a log with a knife at all is a waste, since a saw is often much faster! :)

    How can a coating add strength? Love the new GSO thanks for uppload.

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jörgen Sandström Not a coating. It's a "peened" finish on the steel itself, the concept appears to be a "work hardening" of the surface (which strengthens it) to reduce scratching and it also evidently helps reduce corrosion.
      A coating like DLC, while strong and scratch-resistant, is only as strong as the bond with the metal surface, but this finish IS the metal surface. Time/use will tell how durable it really is...
      Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

      +Chamdar17 thanks! how is the size compared to a Fallkniven A1? is GSO 7/7 more comparble to the A1?

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jörgen Sandström GSO-5.1 is smaller, thinner, and lighter than the A1. A1 is closer to the GSO-6... 7/7 is a bit longer and has the finger-choil. The most noticeable difference is going to be the thinner stock and more efficient cutting geometry of the GSO's. Fallkniven's are built tough but thick - in the spine and the edge. That said, the Fallkniven is a great knife, very durable... but I prefer the GSO :)

    Hello, I wanted your opinion on steel CPM 20 CV because I'm thinking of buying a fixed blade to be used in nature in M390 steel (practically the same as CPM 20 HP). Do you think it is an excellent steel of a knife for use in nature of this size? It is robust in use heavy? It keeps the edge for long? It does not rust if used in humid environments? So in your opinion it is one of the best choices of knives of this type? Let me know what you think, thanks to a Michael salute.

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lo Michele,
      20CV or M390 has excellent corrosion resistance, should not rust in such environments.
      It excels at holding an edge against abrasive use. However, in a "survival" type knife of this size, abrasion resistance is usually less of a concern, and sometimes a hindrance as it can increase difficulty in sharpening, especially if the user is inexperienced or using incorrect equipment.
      In this type of knife in this size, "toughness" particularly at the edge may be of greatest concern. M390/20CV is quite tough, but it is difficult for it to match some other steels like CPM-3V. Still, i would not be concerned about the knife losing large sections of edge or breaking easily because of the choice of steel.
      If the geometry of the blade is appropriate to the use, and if you are confident that you can restore the edge when it loses sharpness, then I think M390/20CV is a fine choice. However, if you are concerned about ease of sharpening or strict edge-durability, then i think it would be wise to select a steel like CPM-3V for the increased toughness and sacrifice some abrasion-resistance and corrosion-resistance.
      That is my opinion, and thank you for watching!

      This is suitable in your opinion? Lansky Deluxe 5 Stones Sharpening System LKCLX

    • @micheletennis87
      @micheletennis87 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The knife is the Lionnstell M4, what do you think? it is fit for purpose?

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The M4 is a beautiful knife, I particularly like the cocobolo-scale option.
      It is a good choice for heavy outdoor utility - compact but built very strong. Like the Survive! knife, it will probably have a thicker edge than would be preferred to really utilize the improved edge-retention of M390, but that is alright.
      Sharpening on the Lansky should be fine, just be sure not to switch to the finer grits until you have established a keen apex with the coarse grits, and be patient.
      Most of all, enjoy that knife! :)

    Woman are interested in jewelry and fashions. Men play with their guns and knives. Hahahah
    The knife is the most important survival item. With a knife, you can build a shelter, hunt, make fire, make water containers, etc. In my opinion the Survive knives are one of the best survival knives available. They pay attention to heat treatment. Any steel with bad heat treatment will not perform as it should be. The price is right for what you get.

      +Philipp Alexander There will be more, if you go to the bladeforums Survive! subforum linked in the "about" section above, you will find comments from the S!K rep Ellie, they posted mostly the "Factory 2nds" on the 15th, they will post more on the 22nd. Be alert, those may sell out quickly as well. Survive! is moving to a "Monday Sales" model where they only post knives that are in-stock and sharpened, and they only add them on Mondays. Mine was a "Pre-order".

      Mike P I got my 5.1 and 4.7, am waiting on my 4.1s, then 3.5s, then ... More. If you get sick of waiting, you just ask for a refund, and that's the end of it. I never have, but that's because they've never failed to deliver. They aren't always within the expected time frame, but the product has never failed to please :) still, if you get sick of waiting, ask for your refund and get over yourself

      @Chamdar17  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike P you're talking about a 5.1? They finished shipping these out a LONG time ago and haven't even begun making the next run, won't be for another year if then. Did you ask for a refund? Get it and go elsewhere until they have them in production again at least.

    • @TheGfhicks
      @TheGfhicks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did and they don't respond to the BBB complaints. The FTC and ID AG need to be called. They took orders for the 5.1 in May of 2016 and here in 2019 they haven't ordered the steel or even begin cutting a thing. Great thing is I move on to Carothers and Fiddleback at least I know I can get a knife from them without worries of a company going belly up. Waiting 3 1/2 years to 5 years for a production blade is not worth it.

  • @TheGfhicks
    @TheGfhicks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes I ordered the GSO 5.1 in 2016 and Here it is 2019 and they haven't even ordered the steel to start the process. They told me in the last quarter of 2016 that the 7/7 were done too and yet 2019 and they have not finished the model yet. I wonder why they had so many sales on the 7/7 in the past year. I love the people that say they always deliver someday. It is strange that when they say in a message they should be sent out by X month then 2 years past the date they said they would mail it it is the consumer's fault. They always go back to the statement when you order that no date is guarantee but they put new information out and sure enough that statement means nothing. They don't make anything at the shop anymore and that is fine. Tell me how are the SK models that were suppose to be sent out in 8 months coming along because it has been 2 years since they took orders on that model. Remember that another company was suppose to be making them but no that was a lie too because they never were made and now they have double the orders and triple the wait time. I am suppose to be glad that it takes 5 years to get the GSO 5.1 and that is if I am lucky. One day the words will come sorry we were in over our heads thanks for the money and good luck on getting refunds since we are a LLC. How much did they make from the interest free loans?

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Recieved my F2 GSO 4LE last month and the factory 1st 4LE last week, both knives meeting my expectations and beyond :thumbup:
      I wait for my GSO 3.5, 12, and I will put in an order for an SK-3.5 when they catch up or put out a call asking for orders.
      The fact that they are way behind and have no guaranteed delivery date has been known for longer than when you ordered your knife. You ordered anyway. When they publicized the delay or lack of progress, did you request a refund?
      Eat your own bullshit about them not delivering or not offering a refund, they have never failed to do either. So while the delay is their fault, your bullshit is your own. Ditch your order, some one else will gladly pick it up as they only offer for sale now knives that other people have ordered and then abandoned. Get that? Every knife offered for sale is one that is being made.
      I have zero concern that each knife remaining in my orders will either be delivered or refunded, but I would prefer the former as these remain the BEST such knives I have ever come across for the price.
      If you are overly frustrated, DROP YOUR ORDER and try another brand, plenty out there, but save your unsubstantiated predictions for your own platform.
