Aaron, I absolutely agree with your review. I purchased my GSO-5 after watching your original video. It is my favorite knife of all time and I have a bunch. It goes with me most camping or hiking trips and excels at any task. I am not really sold on finger choils on a 5 inch blade, but have regretted not getting the 5.1 a few times. Bottom line, Survive Knives were/are so hard to purchase ya gotta wonder why they are not allowing Bark River or other high production company to make these models. Unsure if you get notified of all comments, but if you do apologies for all the comments today, we have a big snow day going on. Congrats on 100k!
Just carry a strop and just give it a few passes after you use it. Once it's sharp it's really easy to keep sharp. I use the black emery and regular leather to keep my GSOs sharp.
It is awesome how Nutnfancy has spawned and inspired many other TH-cam channels, such as this, that add to the public domain of reviews, education, and opinions. Nice videos and thanks!
Ok, I've seen your review regarding the best survival knife which the Esee 6 in 1095, I believe came out on top. Now that you've had experience with field sharpening the GSO's, which would you recommend, the GSO 5.1 or the Esee 6 (taking the price difference off the table)? Thanks!
Great review. I have a gso 8 on pre order. And the 5 will be next. I've been seeing/reading great reviews. I'm a big fan of my bark rivers. Can't wait to get my hands on them. Thanks for the review.
Approxmently what am I looking at with the cost of the Gso 5 ??? And thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinion on this awesome blade from Survive Knives, I appreciate it sir.
How do I go about purchasing something from their line... I have looked on Amazon and BladeHQ but no luck. Any other info on how or where to purchase one?
Great review been trying to decide on what knife to get i watched both vids you made a year ago and i am going to be buying mine soon. I was thinking the 5.1. Also i was wondering what would you use to keep rust down since its not stainless? And since its been a yaer how about a update. And whats the difference between the different types of handles the offer.
Holy cow....now I kind of regret selling my 5 and 3.5. There were zero reports of field sharpening back then. I did make a few $ since they were out of production but man o man....now they're gonna be even harder to get because...this video :P cheers!
I've become a huge fan of cpm 3v and its analog steels like cpm cruwear, pd-1 and z wear. They are some very tough steels and take anything I could through at them. I really like how keen you can get the edge, some of my proudest sharpest edges (im talking tissue paper slicing with ease sharp) were on cruwear, pd 1 and 3v. Edge retention is good, its about the same as a really well done s30v maybe a lil bit better byt its harder to resharpen by quite a bit. Now touch up isn't bad but if you need to fully resharoen the knife or even worse, change its geometry and lower the angle then its a P.I.T.A. to deal with. It takes as long as elmax and close to m390 in time consumption but has less wear resistance so thst oart im not too sure about why. Still they are amazing steels and im a huge fan of them, if you're looking for a knife that can rake anything you can think of, get 3v, pd 1 or cru/z wear.
Michael Clark Look on bladehq and they will give the specs for each. They both have the some cutting edge just one has a choil and one doesn't. I think you can tell which I prefer of the two.
Kind of a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Can you strike a ferro rod off the spine? That's not a killing affair, I'm just curious. I'm debating between this and the Esee 6.
Michael Clark Neither one will be able to make sparks without modifying the spine. I love my ESEE6 and my GSO5, I would say go ESEE6 first then GSO later.
Another stupid question. I know it comes with the sheath, but can the belt clip be moved to a scout carry set up or is it molded to standard? Scout carry is more comfortable for me, that's why I ask.
Michael Clark They can add a ferro rod notch. I built a similar knife and did the ferro rod notch on mine in 3 mins with a dremel. It works better then a spine even for BushCrap bark removal or whatever BS.
Michael Clark Yes you can move the clip for scout carry. Check out the end of this video he has his set up that way. You can also buy or make a dangler. Yes you can make sparks if you have/order the ferro notch. The ESEE will be cheaper, the GSO is a better, stronger, much more stain resistant knife that will keep an edge a lot longer because of the steel. The 3V steel also makes the knife structural stronger when prying vs 1095. There's a video of Guy S repelling off of a 4.1. The ESEE is a good knife just a step down because of the steel.
That's a great looking knife Aaron, I don't know how it has some how slipped under my radar. I know I've heard of CPM3-V before but it's burried in my brain somewhere. It must be stainless steel, am I right? Anyway good video. Mike in SJ
im going to get a gso 5.1 but im torn between 3v and 20cv your thoughts? id like it as a everything knife, hunting, survival, edc, in any environment anywhere anytime for anything what do you think?
+midwestoutdoorsman Many moons late of course but I wouldn't rate 20CV nearly as high as 3V for edge retention and toughness. 20CV is better at resisting corrosion for sure but 3V is no slouch in that regards itself.
Hell yeah. Just pre ordered the 5.1 now that it's available. V3 coming in hard. You'd think V3 would be the standard for all high end survival knives. It's the best
Vipertech It is on my radar, but it will probably not happen till really next year. It looks to be a great blade, I just hope they make a drop point version.
I have the GSO 4.1, GSO 5.1, and GSO 7/7. I also have a ZT 0100, which is similar in length to the GSO 5.1 and is likewise a 3V blade. While they're different knives, for sure, I've never carried the ZT into the woods. The GSO line is just one of the best survival knives in existence. I also have a Busse TGLB, and I still prefer the GSO. It's what is in my BOB.
+gideonstactical any idea where I can get the GSO10? It's so hard to find and sold out on blade HQ and the website is out too:( also looking for the American knife conpany Denali. Also have you heard of the Ontario woodsman? Should review that one next. For 95 bucks looks like an awesome knife
it is in between, it is in the range called "semi-stainless" (it is hight carbon but also have other components "in quantity" usually fount in stainless steel). Semi-stainless rules nowadays and 3V is by far the best mix on the market (at last that i have used). carbon 0.80 chromium 7,50 vanadium 2.75 molybdenum 1.30 go on crucible.com all you need to know about composition is there.
puma51921 I've been waiting for mine since May of 2016 and their site says they're still waiting on steel so I'm glad I'm not the only person waiting a ridiculous amount of time. I started to think something got messed up with my order
Thanks for the vid. If anybody is interested I have a GSO 5.1 in 20CV and I would like to exchange for a GSO 5 because I would like it with no choil. I'm also interested in seeing first hand how 3V performs. PM me.

So now its 2.5 years later…. how is the knife holding up? Still a favourite?
Great review ! I LOVE CPM3v.. I have A GSO 10 And am waiting for another run of the GSO 7/7 in CPM3v.. Great Stuff Aaron !
John Deaton Thanks so much glad you are a fan of the GSO line.
What a killer knife! Would not expect less from 3V.
555 Gear Amen!

First time finding your videos - They are great. You’ve also got a nice almost broadcasters voice
Nice review. Quick question, what's the main differences between the CPM-3V blade and the CPM Magnacut?
Thx

Brad Barber It goes for about $200 is what I paid.
Thanks Aaron I appreciate the info, and for getting back to me.
No problem and have a good labor day!
@gideonstactical - Does this have a 90 Degree Spine for striking a ferrocerium rod?
If so: Is this available in Europe too, preferably in Germany?
How do I go about purchasing something from their line... I have looked on Amazon and BladeHQ but no luck. Any other info on how or where to purchase one?
I don't have a survive knife yet but I'm ate up with them they are awsom
Great review! So would you say that you would take this blade over say one of your custom ESEE 6 with the aftermarket sheath and handle scales?
Great review.
How would you compare this excellent blade against the First Edge 5050?

When you use spiderco sharpmaker what angle do you use? I tried to find angle for my gso 3.5 but I couldn't find it
I was looking on the website and couldn't find anything. What's the difference between the GSO 5 and the 5.1?
Michael Clark Look on bladehq and they will give the specs for each. They both have the some cutting edge just one has a choil and one doesn't. I think you can tell which I prefer of the two.
Did they stop making this model?
Another great review and update video. I do have a question though, does this knife have a 90-degree spine?
wicked Hale No it does not. The SK-4 does though.
Oh ok. Thanks.
gideonstactical Is the SK-4 the same steel as the GSO-5? Also, SK-4 or ESEE 4?
Kind of a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Can you strike a ferro rod off the spine? That's not a killing affair, I'm just curious. I'm debating between this and the Esee 6.

Why so much more than TOPS knives in cost?
Will the Survive GSO 5.0 hit a fero rod Aaron?
That's a great looking knife Aaron, I don't know how it has some how slipped under my radar. I know I've heard of CPM3-V before but it's burried in my brain somewhere. It must be stainless steel, am I right? Anyway good video. Mike in SJ
jeredsyn1964 Thanks Mike, it is a high carbon but a semi-rust resistant type. It is like an upgraded D2, but is must tougher.
Thanks Aaron
Do you like the 3V over the S7 steel you tested on SK4?
im going to get a gso 5.1 but im torn between 3v and 20cv your thoughts? id like it as a everything knife, hunting, survival, edc, in any environment anywhere anytime for anything what do you think?

I've ordered the GSO 5.1 in MagnaCut. Can't wait to get it.
Hey Gideon great vid. I would like to see a CS Warcraft Tanto review please.
Vipertech It is on my radar, but it will probably not happen till really next year. It looks to be a great blade, I just hope they make a drop point version.
gideonstactical oh yeah drop point version would be nice (hollow grinf + cpm-3v)

Awesome lineup man!!
I had one before but I felt like the gso 4.1 can do the same tasks and it's lighter.
Ray Contego My sk-4 can do most tasks, but the extra inch or blade and wider blade do come in handy for larger tasks.
I don't use my finger choil much on my esee. would you choose the GSO 5 over the 5.1?
+bkdesignr Not sure.
+gideonstactical fair enough
+gideonstactical any idea where I can get the GSO10? It's so hard to find and sold out on blade HQ and the website is out too:( also looking for the American knife conpany Denali. Also have you heard of the Ontario woodsman? Should review that one next. For 95 bucks looks like an awesome knife
great update, thanks for the tips.
Jeremy Sampliner No problem!
you can easily put a paracord belt loop on that sheath.
how are you supposed to buy this knife if it is always out of stock?
You have to get it in the pre-order stage I believe. And then wait like 8 months or something like that lol got a gso 8 on the go.
More like a year, or two.
@@michaelstjohn6086 and put all the money upfront. No thanks
@@seanbowie7966 you don't.......

Almost impossible to get one. I have been waiting for 2 years for mine

Awesome if you get it this year. Js
Great Video.
Dwight E Howell Thanks!

Thanks for the vid.
If anybody is interested I have a GSO 5.1 in 20CV and I would like to exchange for a GSO 5 because I would like it with no choil. I'm also interested in seeing first hand how 3V performs. PM me.
