    This was hands down the best video series I have found for the A7s III - THANK YOU! I have had this for ages but never had the time (nor, frankly, the expertise) to get the most out of it. Hopefully, that will now be closer to reality!

    • @BlackBeltBarrister
      @BlackBeltBarrister 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is probably a long shot - but if I have a very bright background and a bit shadowy for the subject, is there a way for the camera to adjust exposure for both without adding lots of lighting? The iPhone seems to do some wizardry that I don't understand to make that happen!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you film in log and expose brightly without zebras in your highlights thst should help. But the iPhone is doing a lot of magic and work to brighten things up

    I watched this video when first released and it was a big help in setting up my A7siii. Now I haven't been shooting for a while and no one has done a better job of describing the proper and best set up for this camera than you. And by the way, there is no description in the Sony manual that begins to explain the functions the way you do. Many thanks again. Clear and concise.

    This Part2 is Another WINNER. I used it to translate to my new A7 IV with just a few exceptions. Now it's just a matter of remembering where everything is! HA. I make notes for each change, because unfortunately, Sony doesn't make a way to backtrack to the "default" setting for a single option. Only useful for those "OCD" times of wondering, "Hmmm, what was the default value?"
    THANKS AGAIN, MATT...GREAT JOB!

    I want to thank you for this excellent tutorial and for giving all of us your camera settings to copy them to our cameras. Pt 1 and Pt 2 of these videos plus the How to Expose in SLOG3 helped me achieve absolutely great results last week. Your settings are really practical and really work, and your tips are to the point. Unless other self-proclaimed gurus (e.g. Mark Galer) your tips actually made me shoot the video with the cinematic look I was looking. Other TH-camrs DON'T give away all their tricks. They are selfish with their "secrets".

    Hallo Matt, one suggestion from a guy in a german forum, wich works very well: you can register time automatic to one of the function keys. While prssing the button, you switch between manual mode and automatic. If you have no time to set your exposure correctly, this may save your shot. You get instantly a well balanced clip. The A7SIII performs changin in the shutter very smoothly. I combined this with the exposure compensation Dial set to +1 (for ETTR). I normally prefer shooting in manual mode, but this workflow is for run and gun a big plus. It is so damed fast. I registered this function to AEL, works very fine for me.

    What an amazing video Matt, you are the king of customisation! Speaking about your Select Finder/Monitor on MANUAL mode and controlled by the REAR2/No.5 Down Button, I have just discovered and some may find useful to set the Select Finder/Monitor on AUTO mode. This way, by pressing the Down Button you can set the screen on and off to save battery even during video recording/time lapses and you still have the Auto Viewfinder feature when you get your eye close to it :)
    Your Dial Settings are fantastic too and I thought that since the Dial No.3 is for 4K 120fps, which means shutter at 1/250 and consequently a lot less light, some may want to register it with a faster aperture than f2.8. I set mine as fast as possible to f1.4, as my Sigma 16mm allows that. If the lens you're using can't open that much, you could register Dial No.3 with a higher ISO like 12,800 as it's the High Base ISO in S-Log2 and S-Log3 on the A7siii, therefore the cleanest one in that range :)

    Great video Matt. You have made this all SO easy. Ive downloaded the presets but I want to tweak them. Do I have to go through the whole preset again and assign to 1,2,3 on the rotary dial or can I build/amend the current presets? Hopefully the latter. I just want to move from manual filming to Aperture priority with a auto ISO. I know - I am sorry, but I am filming myself 99% of the time so just need good footage with minimal effort. It’s an extra step but you can save your M1-4 settings by dragging the folder onto your desktop. So if you format the card you can restore them without having to redo them every time. I keep some picture profile adjustments on them so it’s worth the fiddling about to save them.

    @mondotv4216 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good advice and excellent video but I would advise everyone to work out their own customisation for their workflow. Matt's is a good start but I have me zebras and peaking on/off on the left scroll and down scroll respectively. I don't want anything on my scroll wheel that can accidentally change the image. I keep ISO on there but it's something you have to confirm. One thing I would suggest you put on your function menu is Picture Profile. I use 3 different profiles on the A7SIII and I often have to change them mid shoot. SLog3, S-Cinetone and OFF (for greenscreen work). Like Matt I have peaking and zebra levels on my Fn button but I don't bother with the on/off because they're on my scroll wheel. Instead I have gamma assist on/off as I like to check my SLog image occasionally uncorrected for highlights. I also have white balance in there - yeah I've got it assigned to C2 on top of the camera but if you can't see the top of the camera it's too easy to accidentally hit the record button so I keep it on the Function menu as well. One other thing to note - unlike Matt I don't really trust Sony's multi metering. You get used to it and can judge exposure using zebras etc but a handy little trick is to cycle through the display options and first after "all off" brings up the histogram. Although primarily designed for stills it's handy, especially in log mode as you can quickly check you haven't clipped your highlights and shadows using the histogram. Now if only Sony would give us shutter angle rather than speed all us video shooters would be grateful.
