Thanks for an informative video, Max! I've had my a7sIII for about a week now and have a fairly good grasp of all the settings so far, but I still don't understand how to customize buttons (or even where the option is in the menu!). You quickly got into your personalized settings in the video but never showed where the menu was or how to set custom settings to some of the buttons, which would have been a little more helpful. The sample footage you used in the video is really beautiful.
there is definitely an increased performance hit with 10bit 4:2:2 but other factors have a bigger impact like 4K resolution or shooting in 4:2:2 10bit XAVC HS 4K (h.265)
A tip for zebras. You can set your Down button as a shortcut for Zebras, and Have Custom 1 and even Custom 2 set to what a face should be at (55 or 60 IRE etc.). So when you're shooting, because you're on Zebra 100+, if you press "Down" "Down" then it quickly shows you custom 1. Then you flick back up to 100+ Also, Quick Question: Since you shoot in HS most of the times, and you're going from 24 to 50 to 100 (set in MyMenu 1), isn't possible just to have All your settings remain the same, but have the Framerate Change when you switch the Dial on top of the Camera to 1, 2, 3 for 24, 50 and 100? So you change it quicker, with a dial, instead of going in a menu... (Furthermore I think you can lock the shutter speed to be appropriate 1/50, 1/100, 1/200) with these Memory functions. Is all of this true? Can 1 for 24, 2 for 50 and 3 for 100 be done on the dial without any problems?
Max you always have the most *valuable* intel on camera settings.. this was so insightful (I haven't ordered my A7S3 yet, but..) Love your channel my guy.
This is the video I needed. I appreciate Max’s simple and straight forward, yet thorough explanation of the settings. Question: In the video Max customized a few of the Picture Profile settings (PP1, PP6 and PP8). Is there a reason to keep those picture profiles in those spaces or could I change those same settings to PP1, PP2 and PP3 for easier memory and access?
Thanks for the emphasis on which memory cards are really needed. When I first bought the A7S III I was stressing out whether or not I really needed the CF Express - A cards. Turns out V90 cards have been more than good enough to shoot all the All-I formats and there hasn't been 1 situation where I thought to myself "Hmm I really want to use S&Q 4K 120P 10-bit". To me the loss of audio alone from S&Q isn't worth forking over the premium for a CF Express Type A card.
Thanks Max ...I’m working through the video slowly and did note the Sony M card had a recall in June ... apparently the corrected cards will have an Astrix...(still looking into this) ... really appreciate your work!
Thank you Max for making this video. I really like seeing other people's idea of how to setup their camera. I am really glad you gave use something to download as well. Enjoy the cameras.
Thanks for the video Max. I’ve been using canon 80D and that worked great for me but as I started to pick up projects here and there, I feel the pinch in low light and not having high frame rates... so I ordered this with a 50 and 85 mm Sony lenses... I’m super excited!

No one is talking about the 4+2 Additional Focus Area Tracking modes that appear in the Menu when the camera is in M Stills Mode. Its mentioned in the Sony Guide at the bottom of "Selecting the focus area (Focus Area)", but does not appear in video mode. BTW pressing the red button in stills mode will record video, but no tracking.

This is great, thank You Max, You helped me alot with this video, just got a7siii too and already tested it first time at last saturday wedding :) Just one big problem here, have You found best color matching profiles between A7s II and A7S III already? As i mentioned before i filmed first wedding with these 2 cameras, set them both for 8bit 4:2:0 50fps HD (didn't want to go crazy with 4k at first video, don't know if my pc gonna handle it well lol), with cine4 and s-gamut3 cine profile, but they are so different in colors... Maybe You found any sweet spot in colors between them?
Hey Max! The SF-G128 card you linked as "SD card for ALL-I shooting" doesn't work! I've owned that exact one, and my A7S3 still tells me that it's not compatible because the card isn't rated V60 or higher on the label. I'm hoping this gets fixed in the future, as I too thought I wouldn't have to buy new cards for this camera but this disappointment had me shell out money for both V60 Lexar cards and the 80GB CFE card for that one high bitrate format.
I have same issue with this very card. Card works fine with my a7R3 but a7S3 camera keep saying 299MB/s writing speed Sony card is not fast enough 🤨???
@@whoyoum It is what it is. Definitely annoying, but I feel like this was made so that no potentially incompatible cards slip through the cracks rather than allowing a few capable cards (such as this one) to work but at the same time potentially allowing those that can't handle the writes
Hey Max, on my old Sony's I had a custom button set to audio levels and one for clear image zoom which were super super useful. It seems like Sony's stripped these out as custom button options in the new menus which seems bonkers to me. Having to go into the menu to change audio levels is major step back (in this one dept anyway). Am I missing how to add these functions to a custom button? Best I can see right now is make My Menu one of the custom buttons and then put audio levels in there.
Never mind on Clear Image Zoom. I realize they've just made it so you have to choose between CIZ and optical power zoom so you can't just leave it on 'both' and have it jump right into CIZ if you're using a prime like you could on the old cameras where it would start with optical if you a PZ lens on, but just jump right into CIZ if you didn't instead of blocking the operation. Kind of annoying but I don't have any power zoom lenses so I guess I'll just leave it CIZ.
I'm planning to use this video to set up my a7siii tomorrow. Question for though: I have my a7iii set to record in cine4 and a different picture profile for stills, should I just carry over whatever settings you recommend here to the a7iii so they are consistent? Is that what you would do if you continue to use both cameras for similar things? Or recommend keeping a7iii at cine4 and using cine2 for the a7siii like you recommend? What would you do?
Do you have any updates to these recommendations, or are you sticking to them? I plan to edit on Lumafusion on my 2020 iPad Pro, should I still stick to the XAVC HS format?
great video Max. My a7siii arrived today, trying to follow along but i'm not seeing a 24p option in HS codec. only 50p or 100p. what am i doing wrong? :) edit nevermind, i had it in PAL. Once in NTSC it had 24p etc
Love the video!!! Serious question- is there a way to save the current video settings so when you switch to manual(photo) and go back to video mode it goes back to those settings? So that I don’t have to switch the settings every time I go from photo to video? I always have to turn off picture profile and switch a bunch of things and it’s really annoying to switch back and forth!!! Please help!!! :)
I notice it warms up slightly with 24mmGM lens even if it's just on & not recording, this doesn't happen with Tamron17-28 = not concerned but now curious if 24mmGM depletes the battery faster 😬
@@MaksimYuryev yeah, I only buy 128gb cards right now. It's the sweet spot. I also have Tough M's on the side just because I got tired of breaking Sandisk cards.
Hey Max, when you say @9:52 your PP10 is "for HDR," what effect/purpose are you looking to get out of this specifically? Super contrast and color-rich videos?
The explanation of which cards still isn't clear. So do the M cards work for ALL-I or not? Because in the description you wrote down M cards above the line that says as cards for shooting ALL-I. Which got me thinking is M cards for regular filming and for ALL-I then I need the two cards listed? Confusing...
Awesome video! Do you know if there’s a setting on A7siii to close the shutter when changing lenses? Aparently the Sony A9 has this. It would be great to have to keep dust off the sensor. I cant find anything from Google searches.
Max, I don't get it, you say at #4:25 that it is a pain to edit 4:2:2 because most computers can't decode it? I can do it with my PC running ryzen 9, 32GB RAM, and using Davinci and I am not sure if I am missing something here or your information is not quite accurate, can you please explain more?
Sensor doesn't fix solidly it's position when camera is OFF! Is it normal? I've been told by SONY Support that it is the way it should be. Max, PLEASE tell me it is really normal. I hear how sensor moves while I'm slowly rotating my a7Siii or if I shake it a bit when camera turned OFF. Don't you think it's weird??
The camera look sweet but I already bought 3x A7s3's. The C70 costs $2000 more (so $6000 if buying 3) and doesn't have an EVF which is handy and can't record RAW (which I don't really need) the dynamic range is the same in LOG and the A7s3 has footage that is easier to edit because of 4:2:0. You Also have the active IBIS which should be better. I love the mini XRL's on the C70 and the build in ND's are amazing. Both are great cameras and the C70 is sooo tempting by the S3's make a ton of sense for me.
He's got two retail boxes there. He still has his loaner copy with his settings on it. Likely has yet to setup/inbox the retail models. Fuck outta here pedant.
Haha yup thats my older b-roll, as you see the ones I bought don't have it. I wasn't going to add b-roll to the start of this video since but decided to add it last minute before exporting.
Hey I downloaded the file, but when I click load settings, it says "file doesn't exist" or something. Is there a specific sub folder this SONY folder needs to go in?
Hi @Max Yuryev great video I wanted to ask I'm in the PAL region and we don't have the option of XAVC HS at 25P my computer is a macbook pro 2020(March) i wanted to know should I go with the S-I mode at 25p or the S mode 25p I was thinking the S-I as you get more more mpbs but I wonder will my computer struggle to edit at 4.2.2? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
first thing to note is massive increase in sensor size aps-c vs full frame, than the fact that A7SIII has fewer pixels 12mp vs 21.2 meaning even larger pixel size for cleaner low light
A bit confused on what you said. I only need the CFExpress card if I was to shoot 4K120 AND All-I AND In S&Q? What If I shoot 4K120 in a lower Codec but still in S&Q or a different combination of those?

What kind of settings would you do with lowlight filming sports (kickboxing)?
Do you need slow motion? 24fps would help in low light.
Awesome video! With the Sony M cards can they handle the higher 200 and 280 bitrates or only the 100? Thanks in advance!
So I can shoot 120fps with the v90 card?
Wonderful info, Max. Thank you 👍
Preorder at July 30th, still in back-ordered status.... Don’t know when is my shipment start but can’t wait!!😂 nice to know those stuff! thanks!!!
Same here, I preordered on July 28th about 2 mins after announcement and I haven't gotten mine yet
Steven Useda damn, that is sucks!....... and i hate those people from eBay selling them high price, make me wanna swear
Hopefully yours come soon!
Max Yuryev yeah I'm hoping so too. Supposedly mine comes in mid October but we"ll see
I guess they weren't ready for the obvious avalanche of orders from us for this holy grail camera.
Are you manually synchronising your audio with your video over a bluetooth headset or something? 😅 (something seems off)
great video Max.
Does your A7S3 is heating during menu navigation ( I mean if you navigate 20 minutes for example)?
I notice it warms up slightly with 24mmGM lens even if it's just on & not recording, this doesn't happen with Tamron17-28 = not concerned but now curious if 24mmGM depletes the battery faster 😬
Thanks for the info, super helpful!!
The Sony E cards are pretty good too.
I have 1 of them and its V30 rated so you can still shoot 100Mb/s but for the higher bit rate modes you'll need something faster.
@@MaksimYuryev strange. I have the Sony E that is V60.
AsianWithHat ah is yours a larger capacity one? Mine is a 64GB so it’s possible that the larger ones could be V60 or the new ones are.
I think only Sony's CFexpress cards enable ALL-i in highest fps modes 4k120/hd240, V90/V60 SD cards enable majority of codec recording
@@mirrorlessny yes but specifically speaking which of each codecs and combinations? There needs to be an easy to read chart somewhere
@@studiomtn ProGrade 64gb SD V90 card enabled me to record 24/30/60fps in all codecs, but not all-i 4k120/hd240
Good review Max, I was wondering if you could explain how you got to show the menu view of the camera to the computer screen for capture.
Great video but I don't see the custom setup download link? Thanks for all your work on your channel.
Great tutorial man thank you!
Since you have multiple a7siii’s do you know how to transfer settings from one to the other?
Now that PP11 S-Cinetone is out, is that your go to rather then PP1 movie?
Awesome video!
Do you know if there’s a setting on A7siii to close the shutter when changing lenses? Aparently the Sony A9 has this. It would be great to have to keep dust off the sensor.
I cant find anything from Google searches.
Max, I don't get it, you say at #4:25 that it is a pain to edit 4:2:2 because most computers can't decode it? I can do it with my PC running ryzen 9, 32GB RAM, and using Davinci and I am not sure if I am missing something here or your information is not quite accurate, can you please explain more?
Trying to load your settings onto my A7S3 and can't seem to do it. Any help would be great. Thanks!
can you use the sandisk gold or extreme for shooting at all?
Great. video ! Thanks! There is not one video on A7SIII and USB settings with RONIN S . Can you make one ?
Sensor doesn't fix solidly it's position when camera is OFF! Is it normal? I've been told by SONY Support that it is the way it should be.
Max, PLEASE tell me it is really normal. I hear how sensor moves while I'm slowly rotating my a7Siii or if I shake it a bit when camera turned OFF.
Don't you think it's weird??
it's normal, when camera is off there is no current going to ibis so it's not holding/balancing the sensor
Hi Max - were you tempted to get a Canon C70 rather than the A7S iii? What swung you around?
The camera look sweet but I already bought 3x A7s3's. The C70 costs $2000 more (so $6000 if buying 3) and doesn't have an EVF which is handy and can't record RAW (which I don't really need) the dynamic range is the same in LOG and the A7s3 has footage that is easier to edit because of 4:2:0. You Also have the active IBIS which should be better. I love the mini XRL's on the C70 and the build in ND's are amazing. Both are great cameras and the C70 is sooo tempting by the S3's make a ton of sense for me.
0:30 So your new cameras came with the manufacturer numbered sticker?
He's got two retail boxes there. He still has his loaner copy with his settings on it. Likely has yet to setup/inbox the retail models. Fuck outta here pedant.
don't they all? 😂
I know its just b-roll from his previous testing and he just didn't want to re-shoot the image. But I had to call it out. To be clear i love Max!
Very helpful, thank you!
So, for video, you can’t change the shutter speed on the FX3 but you can on the a7SIII?
How does it compare to the BMPCC 6K. I’m thinking of selling my 6K camera and getting the Sony a7siii.
first thing to note is massive increase in sensor size aps-c vs full frame, than the fact that A7SIII has fewer pixels 12mp vs 21.2 meaning even larger pixel size for cleaner low light
A bit confused on what you said. I only need the CFExpress card if I was to shoot 4K120 AND All-I AND In S&Q? What If I shoot 4K120 in a lower Codec but still in S&Q or a different combination of those?
V90 card enables me to do internal recording 120fps in all file formats except XAVC S-I HD & XAVC S-I 4K (not using S&Q)
