Very helpful video. The attachment hook got wedged inside the spring when it snapped and couldn't be remove. The replacement hook was difficult to find so I had to buy an adjustment bolt with the hook on end and it worked fine. I also replaced a few rollers. Saved about $250. on one garage door and learned something. Parts cost about $65. I'm ready when the 2nd door breaks. Thanks.

I think that is SOP. They will claim liability, but it's really because they can't make enough money doing it. While torsion springs are much safer, people still hurt themselves working on them. Still, when I did a friend's garage, I converted it to a torsion spring using upgraded parts, like a center ball bearing and a high cycle spring, for something like $130 in parts. One reason he may have a high quote is they might put a new track or something else in. I had to modify the one I was working on to adapt it to the torsion hardware.
I have an older home in which only one of the extension springs broke. Unfortunately, neither the remaining spring nor the broken one is color coded to indicate weight. Is there some other way to figure out what spring to get? I'm willing to replace both springs, but I don't know the weight of the door - should I just go with the strongest spring available?

You CAN NOT replace one spring at a time. BOTH have to be replaced at the same time. This is not about what you want, it is simple physics. The door will not open properly and will have one side pulling strong than the other which will pull it out of the track or bind up and break the joints. If you are too lazy to do work yourself, hire a company to do it or leave it broken.

How should the door wheels look when sitting in the track? Are they suoposed to touch both sides of the track? Mine only touch one side and flop around like the wheels are too small for the track.
Hi, just put on two new 150 lb springs on 150 lb door (matches original), but can’t decrease tension as you showed. The door when close (not on opener track) springs open all the way! Help?
at what point is the extension spring cable attached to the bottom of the door? do i attach the loop end to the bottom of the door first?, should there be a clicking sound to know it is secure? , do i next run the non loop end up and over the stationary pully then run it over and then under the moving pulley, pull it until there is some tension then tie the cable to the plate and plate to S hook?

They are measured 25” long (spring body) with the door fully open, and 67” long when the door is fully closed. The door should be able to stop halfway, can be pull down to close, and push up to fully open. If not, verify spring load rating vs your door weight, they should be equal.
Hello. Yes, here is what will happen when using a stronger spring for the lighter door: If your door is manually operated, you will have to use greater force to close the door and if you let go of the door, it will fly open. The motor will work harder for doors with an electric opener.
If you have a bathroom scale, you can set the garage door on it (with both springs unattached, to get the correct weight.) Or, take your old spring to the hardware store and find one that is the exact same size in length, width, and coils per inch.
Replace both, if 1 broke the other may fail and can be dangerous, they are cheap home depot sells 2 4 $20. Weigh the door and check box for spring recommendation like single 9' door is 100- 110lb spring...
+NP Yup. There is a good chance you'll break something if you try to use an opener with no springs, unless your opener is adjusted correctly, in which case it will just blink at you.

As long as the spring has no tension on it, it is safe to remove. If you are removing the spring with the door closed, that's the wrong way.

The other one will probably break in a year or two, unless you don't hardly use the door at all.
