  • This week we have a special treat, the mesmerizing 3D wooden engraving of the Canadian Coat of Arms using 1/4" solid maple wood. We used the relief mode in our JobControl software to auto-adjust the power of the laser according to the amount of gray shade in our 3D image. With stunning results!

    Just one thing I thought I'd mention. You probably already noticed it, but in that print closeup you could see some pretty clear terracing along the two banners at the bottom as well as other areas with very gentle slopes. To fix this you might be able to make the laser burn at more precise powers. Since you're using a black and white image I assume that there's only 255 intensities that your laser can burn at. I noticed you mentioned that the raw image you gave to that company was a vector, but is the b&w image you got back a raster graphic?

    Hi, this was an interesting video as it is something that I am looking at starting at sometime in the near future but I am looking at something much smaller.
    I'm not sure what other materials that can be etched or engraved on the type of etcher/engraver that can be used for wood, plastic etc. I'm not looking at the high powered engravers used for steel or other metals etc.
    I have an idea for etching into Plaster of Paris to make molds.
    I don't know if you have done any experiments or know if these machines are capable of such etching or if they might just cut straight through the material.
    Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards.

      +Terry Gissing Hi Terry, we are glad you are getting into the business. What do you mean by something much smaller? Are you talking about laser bed, if so our smallest machine (The Rayjet) comes on a 12" x 18" bed size.
      If you're looking to do specifically 3D engravings, another good material to use (for molds) is Acrylic. We haven't tried plaser or paris but we've done terra cotta and rubber (not 3D though) with great success.

    Start with the photo jpg or png and show the steps that you perform on it to create the multi-level grayscale image that you then provide to the program that drives your laser engraver.

      Hi! Our fiber and flexx machines can mark on Metal but they can't engrave it that deeply. You're better off using a 3D printer with a metal material, they make these now.
      Some of our customers do use our SpeedMarker 300 to cut through thin sheets of metal but it is usually quite time consuming as these machines aren't built for metal cutting. • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Simon Huang Hi Simon, we have also used a Speedy 300 80w. There are many factors that you would have to play around with, generally we do about 3-4 passes. The first 2 passes would need more power and less speed (in order to get depth, 100 power, 25 speed), while the last 2 passes would need less power (in order to get detail, 70-100 power, 100 speed). We would then use an electric dremel tool to brush off any burning residue (although cleaning with brush and water/soap can also do the trick). Best wood to use in our experience is Maple (solid). We hope this would help start you off, but there is a lot of trial and error you would need to go through, it's not a simple engraving. Good luck!

      @TrotecLaserCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi guys, what do you mean by planed?

    • @Intertanker
      @Intertanker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Using a machine (or hand) planer instead of a sander. Sanding, if not down to micro sanding, always leaves a somehow larger surface area, - ( and down to smaller details, a sanded area leaves a some more dull surface, because the laser beam burns a little more around the area where it hits). Old, dried birch, was very hard, and gave a significant edge between where the laser beam hits and where it not hits. But since birch, like pine contains oil, the heat with get the oil up from the wood, and needs to be washed away. You should try long dried and therefore hardened aspen; it is also almost white, but will oxidize and be greyish of not surface treated after planing. Also aspen is a fast growing tree, and then the growth rings are wider, making less "interference" if you want a surface with less growth rings.

      Hi Muzika, yes you can do it on a Speedy 300 with regular JobControl software. Any gray-scale file is fine to use, you would just set it to "Relief" mode in JobControl. The reason this particular application (the crest) is so complex is because we took a vector file, sent it to gantryco and they re-designed the image using ArtCam (3D software) in order to make the gray-scale very complex. The hard part lies in the artwork itself, any Trotec speedy laser can do the job.

      Rick Rodrigues Corel draw works great for photo editing and creation. You can duplicated your image using a hot key, then you can convert the desired layer into a different shade. To produce this 3D effect. I’ve personally never had problem using Corel, and there’s lots of educational video’s teaching one to use it on TH-cam, I’d highly recommend. Good luck!

    To me - with the same power and duration - the laser will cut at a different depth depending on the wood species (density etc).
    So to me it doesn't seem convenient, I can't see how the cut depth can be accurate; unless you spend countless time calibrating the machine on each new plank..?

    • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Julien, you mean engrave instead of cut right? There's no need to calibrate the machine for each new plank, you just focus the laser onto the material and put it in "relief mode" in JobControl. Make sure your artwork is greyscale (preferably a 3D image, like the one we used). It's not that complicated to engrave on a laser, the hard part is the design and the time it takes for the laser to do a complex pattern like this.

    • @jabruzzi07
      @jabruzzi07 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply. Yes, I meant engrave, not cut.
      I'm sorry but I still do not understand how the model's depth can be blindly replicated on any type of wood.
      My point is that some woods are more dense than others, and I speculate that a given laser beam will go very deep in poorly densed woods, while it might only scratch the surface of very dense woods. So how do you ensure the laser engraves at the proper depth?
      Thanks.

    • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Julien, from the woods we've tested in the video we didn't change the power or speed of the laser and the results were the same for all 5 wood types. There was more charring on some of the woods like the Spanish Cider (best wood to use for this application would be Birch).
      That being said, we haven't tested the more dense woods, in which case you would have to do trial and error on the various wood types. The nice thing with our JobControl software is that once you find the right power/speed setting you can save it in the "materials" section, so you can have an unlimited amount of saved materials setting for each type of wood you are using.

      I mean it depends on the look you are going for, but it comes out much smoother than maple does. We run it on our 500 watt kern and it looks great, not sure how the lower powered tubes would fair.

    • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you may have to do it with a few passes on lower watt lasers. We'll give Ebony a try. Thanks for the tip!

    • @jayfromjumbie679
      @jayfromjumbie679 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm sure the 200w Trotec would be fine. Another tip is if you want to cut ebony, don't vector cut it. Instead engrave the vector path at high power and slow speed. Ebony is susceptible to catching on fire, but if you just nibble it away a bit at a time it does the trick.

    • @TrotecLaserCanada
      @TrotecLaserCanada  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, do you guys have air-assist on the Kerns? Trotec has a small tube near the laser head that pushes out air to prevent any flames.

    • @TrotecLaserCanada

      Thanks Benoit, it depends on the laser and wattage so we don't want to misrepresent. Also it really depends on how clear or detailed you'd like the image to be. 4-passes on a Speedy 400 100w laser would take about 30min to do a 5"x5" piece. Hope that helps. Thanks!
