A few months ago I bought an abandoned 945. Watching your videos I was able to get it going. This step was a headache... with this video finally find out my relay was not working at all. I must buy a new one. Thank you very much Robert.

Thanks for the video, it really helped to know how to take stuff apart and which relay to check. Luckily I didn't have to replace the relay, I just took it out, cleaned all the contacts and also cleaned the socket it plugs into and it started working perfectly. Really annoying issue that kept bugging me for weeks, but all is well again. The relay itself was in the exact same spot on my 1995 Volvo 940 as your car and the rest of the electrical system looks very similar to yours as well.

Love your rwd series. Recently got a 240 so these are helpful. Mine is a manual but the OD kicks out and back to 4th. I checked Harness, flushed in new fluid, and relocated switch off the shifter. Relay is next thanks

240's are the best - and yes, they have issues like this relay, but I still drive a 37 year old one daily.

I have a '95 volvo 940, and the orange arrow light has been on my dash for a few weeks now. My mechanic is an honest guy and did it has something to do with he gearbox but it's not worth worrying about. Just wondering how accurate this is? If so is there any way to turn that light off?

Thanks, Robert! After I reflowed the relay solder pads, I noticed that the rear window and the overdrive relay were supplied from the No' 11 fuse (1993 240). Also, my rear window defroster worked only intermittently. When I checked the fuse, I found that the No. 11 fuse was not being held very tightly. I bent the fuse holder prongs and voila I now have a rear window defroster and an overdrive working !00% of the time.

Ahh hella units, in a previous job i used to repair the hella flasher units, the black ones with 6 pins i think (memory fade), the relays were allways developing cracked joints and often the relay contacts needed cleaning.
They were actually a good flasher unit but the weight of the relays and road bumps cracked the solder :-(

IPD sells a small device that will get rid of the overdrive shifter and leave the car in overdrive all the time...I do mostly road driving or very slow twon driving...I like this.

If a car doesn't crank it's usually the starter, battery, PNP switch, or fuse.

I have a question: So I press the button and my overdrive light comes on but I don't feel 4th gear kicking in. Is it the relay or is it the solenoid? It could be me not feeling it since it can be a subtle change or is it a distinct feel?
Distinct. When the button is in, 4th is locked out. If you can't feel a difference, it may have been bypassed.

Charles estep It is suppose to do that. The solenoid is moving out of the way of the shifter. If the car works, drive it. ;)
I've done some testing with the overdrive and I hear the relay itself clicking and the arrow appears on the dash, but I don't feel or hear 4th gear coming on. It may have been bypassed and is their a way to un-bypass it by putting in the original module?
What is your tack at when driving 60 mph? If under 3,000, the 4th gear is working fine.
My 89 doesn't have a tachometer. All it has is a speedometer, fuel gauge, temp gauge, and a clock.

+Robert DIY thanks for such swift answer. Any how, it's Volvo 940 92. Knob is there but no wire connected to it. Probably the last time it was in the mechanic visit to get something fixed he removed it and forgot to connect it back. I know there's a place for this wire goes from the gearbox all the way up to this knob. Your advice is needed sir, thanks ))

hey bro, you probably already know but my 90 740 gle the arrow had come on and stayed on and the car wouldnt shift into high...come to find out they are a fuse that controls that to...mine was blowed...changed the fuse and worked perfect again.

those volvos didn't have shift lock back then, doesn't hurt anything if you shift it out of park at a dead stop or when the car is off.

Hi, thanks for answering. It has no error codes and I've changed the pnp switch. All this began after the car stood still for a year.
I forgot to mention I've also changed the transmission fluid

I baked my OD relay at 350F for 3 minutes and all that happened was I got a hot relay! lol Didn't solve my OD problem. Back to the drawing board! :(
did you check the speed sensor in the rear end?

@@RobertDIY My OD works fine. So does my speedometer/odometer. The only problem I'm having is that the OD cut-out switch is non-responsive - like it was on yours. So, it's either a wiring issue or a relay problem. I'm leaning towards the relay. The 'Volvo Owners' Club' of the UK states that 90% of OD problems are relay related. So, I'm betting on the latter.
