I'm sorry but what do you mean by "close to the spectrum"? It's a diagnosis - yes it's a spectrum but at the same time you either have it or you do not. I'm actually on the spectrum and have a diagnosis, and I don't like it when people trivialize my disability like it's a personality trait. That being said, Autism Speaks are absolute cunts and I agree with you on that.
It honestly sickens me that even after all these years autism speaks is still the organisation people look towards, despite most people on the spectrum myself included knowing how shit it is.
Dear God in whatever places they dwell, I am Autism is revolting! I am so glad that I am Anxiety, I am a Stroke (all versions) and I am a Crisis executed the premise so much better and without being revolting or offensive. How the anxiety one described the traits of it, how the stroke ones described the impact, how the crisis one describes the many forms of crisis that can and does affect everyone in the world in one way or another without insulting those who have experienced them (a boiled sweet stuck in a child's throat, a sudden heart attack in a supermarket, a flood, an accident, all possible). Whereas THIS piece of work is treating autism like some homewrecker, some abuser, some vile thing when autism is just someone's brain being wired differently. If people get divorced because they have an autistic child, they should never have gotten married or had kids because they clearly can't handle any challenges, great or small, thrown their way.
the main difference is that anxiety/strokes/crises are actively damaging things that people *should* be concerned about while autism/autistic people don’t deserve to be dehumanized and fear mongered like that
I feel like a lot of parents that complain just want others to parent for them so they don’t have to do it 🤷🏼♀️ same ones who wanna remove anything not for children from the internet so they don’t have to worry about controlling what their children see 👀
Before I learned autism speaks was a hate group, I wanted to get the puzzle heart tattoo. Now I think my brother and stepdad are going to get it, and I wanna say something. I had a teacher who had a puzzle heart charm in her necklace. I don’t think she knew what the organization was because she was by far one of the kindest teachers I’ve ever had
My grandmother keeps getting puzzle piece ribbons and stuff in solidarity with me as an autistic person, and I keep having to tell her it was a symbol made by a hate group that wants to get rid of all forms of autism and autistic people. I keep telling her to look for the symbols actually adopted by the community, like the rainbow infinity symbol. But time and again she keeps forgetting (just today she tried to give me an awareness ribbon for April being Autism Awareness Month here in the US, and I had to explain it again). She also wants to make autism awareness her charity for her club she's in when she ascends to state president, and I told her to make sure to speak with me first so we can pick one that is actually helping autistic people and children and improving their quality of life, and not something like Autism $peaks.
I hope you said something! a lot of autistic ppl (including me) will be wary/avoid ppl with a puzzle piece tattoo bc you can never tell what they think of us
We must end Autism Speaks in some way, I'm not suggesting committing acts of terrorism to end these people, no, we must Project Mayhem these sons of bitches.
The way I physically curled up and cringed at even seeing the words “I am autism”, as an autistic woman that ad and Autism Speaks in general are truly disgusting.
as someone who possibly has autism (i say possibly since i cannot get professionally diagnosed) my jaw dropped hearing that ad. i hate hearing the whole “we can beat/cure autism!” thing. it makes autism seem like this big bad thing we should be scared of and just leads to people not willing to understand what it actually is
@@roxas4636 Don't worry! Most people in the community agree that autism is so often overlooked that it's perfectly fine to self diagnosis it. After all, what will change? You won't beat yourself up over triggers? Great!
TAC isn't known as an insurance company as they only have an insurance claim for when you're injured in a crash. Ask 99% of Aussies and I don't think they would know about their insurance claims
i had to watch the stop the cycle PSA in class once and it is disturbing but it's a good PSA because it gets the message across. Also yes, here in the UK people literally complain about everything lmao
I was having a pretty decent day until that autism speaks ad started playing, dear lord, as an autistic man, that sent me into an absolute rage. I've had to hear the same talking points in that ad over and over again from family who refuse to understand my condition nor choose to ease the aches and pains that come with it.
It's sad that autism speaks treats being on the spectrum as a debilitating llness that will eventually kill your child and take away everything you love and turn them into some kind of heartless monster because of the way they were born.
The UK "No Pressure" PSAs (as well as the fake Australian "Set Yourself Free" one) always made me laugh because they were clearly just British/Australian humor of using over-the-top violence/dark themes in such an absurd way. Same thing for "How Much Is That Doggy" actually too. I know a lot of people hate that PSA because of the implied animal cruelty, and don't get me wrong I HATE animal cruelty, but the "Give us a pound...or we'll have to pull the trigger" is just such great dark humor.
I love/hate the No Pressure ones just because of how much they make me think of if it had been a gory Monty Python skit. Like, I hate how it’s like “do this or we’ll blast you” but the nonchalance with it is very much like a comedy skit than a PSA.
I seem to have some crazy Mandela Effect thing going on that whenever I think about/remember the "How Much Is That Doggy?" PSA I recall there being a gunshot after it cuts to the end card and gives the RSPCA info.

I have autism/Asperger's and the "I Am Autism" PSA pisses me off to no end. I mean comparing autism, even severe autism, to diabetes, pediatric AIDS, and CANCER?! WTF?! And of course Autism Speaks complains about how hard severe autism is for the family... think about how much harder it must be for the actual person with the disability! I don't see anyone comparing severe cerebral palsy (I have very mild CP) to AIDS or cancer, despite the fact that some people with very severe spastic CP die early of medical complications, unlike autism, which is not a terminal illness. I don't see anyone trying to cure CP with fucking voodoo, prayer, or herbs, or blaming it on vaccines. Why are physical disabilities understood better than communication disabilities? Oh, and by the way, you know who made I Am Autism? Fucking Alfonso Cuaron! Director of Gravity and Roma! He has an autistic son and apparently views autism in this scaremongering way! The sad thing too is that the organizations (like ASAN) that have risen in opposition to Autism Speaks are no better. They compare ABA (one of the most effective interventions for autism and other disabilities) to child abuse and often don't consider autism a disability at all, but rather a "different way of thinking". They also believe in FC/RPM because they want to "prove" that low-functioning (a label they hate for some reason) autistic people think the same way as high-functioning autistic people, despite the fact that FC and RPM have both been extensively debunked and have led to dangerous consequences, and that AAC is a way of actually representing the nonverbal person's "voice". It's like there's no middle ground and it really sucks.
Thanks for these! Love the content! Always found PSAs an interesting interesting subject. And us British can be a bunch of devils with them can't we! Some of these came out before my time while I was alive for some. I may have seen them but I probably would've been too young to remember them honestly. But fun fact about the Hooked one. That PSA came out in 2007 right? Well there were print versions of it too, the message from the end and images of the closeup of the hooked mouth. My local GP (local doctors) never changes the posters. 14 years later one of those Hooked prints is still up on the wall. Ik some places sell their old posters and prints so I'm kinda tempted to ask if I can buy it from them when they finally take it down. Better than it just going in the bin right?

Aside from autism speaks and 10 10, I find the over dramatization and scaring the viewers is what a psa is all about. I remember some of these like it was yesterday and i agree that UK rspca is scaring people to get their message across, its also in your face facts. You're going to remember the poor dogs face with a gun to its head and you'll think twice about buying that puppy because its just soooo cute! Can't even tell you how many dog and cats roam free in our city because they don't care. I've rescued 5 animals and My friends owns a cat rescue cause it's so bad here and even though I do find them to be harsh, when it comes down to it I find myself saying "ooooofff, facts" to a lot of these. They have to kill them after a week sometimes. I almost wanna be scared with a psa so I undressed how serious the situation is lol I feel that shit haha
That Hooked smoking psa would of had me pissing myself laughing if I saw that as a kid. Guy in psa looks like a bum and then gets dragged on the floor. Freaking hilarious.
