I enjoyed world of light for what it was, but I've got to agree with you that it would've been wonderful to see other parts of it (aside from the boss fights) be more fleshed out. Also I'm surprised how you didn't point out how spirits were basically a revamped version of stickers from Brawl. They both apply special effects and bonuses to the equipped fight in an exclusive game-mode and they're utilized to represent various characters in addition to (or in the place of) trophies.
I've heard that one of the reasons that there are a lack of cutscenes that were similar to brawl was that Sakurai was concerned of the cutscenes leaking spoilers about the game. I can't remember if that was true or not but it is a shame.
World of light really missed the mark 😔 I was really hoping I could play multiplayer with my brother in that mode like how we did for subspace but I was sad when I found out we couldn’t. Also I was expecting coin smash but there’s not much to talk about there tbh. Great vid Meatball!

I agree a lot with what you said about WoL's overall meh-ness. We probably won't be getting another subspace until nintendo's restrictions on their franchises lessen or someone new other than sakurai heads the series without a deep disdain for youtube cutscene uploads. I really hope if and when we get Smash 6 we get a similar story like Brawl with the characters interacting in cutscenes but the levels like in Melee where you visit the worlds of the characters to stop the evil. I also wished that we just got a separate mode called "Master Hand mode" where just like World of light you play as Master hand in a wave of characters
I agree with everything expressed in this video. I feel the exact same way about World of Light. During the Smash 4 Era, if I foresaw that the story mode for the next Smash game was going to be underwhelming and mediocre, then I would prefer to just not have a story mode at all, as disappointing as that would also be like how it felt when Smash 4 was confirmed to not include a story mode. With Ultimate, they did prioritize the roster over the single player content so if you were to play Ultimate and didn’t like World of Light, the Spirits Mode, don’t have family/friends who neither have the time nor interest into playing the game with you, and you’re a casual non-competitive player, then Ultimate is going to be pretty lonely and you would likely move on from it more sooner than later after completing the roster and adding the DLC fighters. At least, that’s how Ultimate is like for me. After the main roster, updates, and the fighter’s passes were complete, I moved on. Although I was glad that the fighter’s pass had finally ended so that the fanbase wouldn’t be acting all that toxic and crazy about it (having different sides dissing each other, crapping on each other, at war with one another and insulting each other because THAT WAS A REALLY FUN EXPERIENCE, DEFINITELY MADE ME FEEL PROUD TO BE A SMASH FAN AND BOTHER TO STICK AROUND FOR THAT LONG WITHOUT BECOMING ALL DEPRESSED AND BITTER ABOUT IT AND HATING MYSELF TO THE POINT OF IT CONTRIBUTING TO THE THOUGHTS OF HARMING AND GAME OVERING MYSELF EVEN AFTER IT WAS ALL OVER) for any longer, I didn’t really have a good reason to stick around for much longer. Everything just felt still and lifeless, just like how all the fighters returned to being trophies once again and everything was dark at the beginning of Sora’s reveal trailer. To think that Super Smash Bros, with its most recent installment would literally make me feel like some depressed and lonely child who’s stuck in their room for most of their life. It’s not like the Smash Community itself acts as any kind of motivation to stick around for much longer…You would be more mentally healthier and happier being outside of that cursed community. I…I still feel bitter to this very day that I feel like I hate everything about it now even when I don’t actually hate everything associated with Ultimate.
I unlocked all the Spirits and trained all the best ones in every single style I don't think I've played with them in fights outside single player Spirit Board or World of Light more times than I could count on my hands lol
I love your videos man, every single one is an absolute banger! Also the Map of WoL is way to bright compared to the characters, which together with how they scaled the map and characters makes my eyes strain just from watching the footage.
Try turning down the brightness. It'll also make your battery last longer and make other games look the way they should. I know because I play on higher brightness compared to my friends.
Seeing the talk of WoL actually made me think of something similar but different, the Subspace Emissary 2 memes. You know the ones that are just shitposts with captions saying characters doing things? The ones that gave personality to a hypothetical true sequel to the Subspace Emissary as it had characters bouncing off of each other's personalities and whatnot? Man I miss those a bit as they were charming.
I actually loved Spirit mode. It's definitely not the first thing that comes to my mind, but when I got smash + my switch in college I was taking my switch with me to tackle a few spirit battles here and there between classes for a while.
The reason why there isn't a proper boss rush because once you make it available outside Story Mode, there won't be a reason to replay the mode. They didn't want that kind of mistake to be repeated again as that happened with Brawl, as people aren't too clicked with the mode beyond cutscene. (Especially Great Maze)

Ah yes, World of Light, the poor man's Subspace. World of Light is... fine, as a game mode. I go back to it every now and then to chip away at the board, but it's not something I got sucked into and could play for hours on end like Subspace. I know everyone loves the cutscenes from Subspace, but I genuinely loved the gameplay as well, turning a 2D platform fighter into a side scrolling beatem up is genius. If World of Light was built more like Melee's adventure mode with Subspace's scale, it would have been so much better IMO

the possibilities they couldve done with the dlc was missed so hard too. there arent even any mini areas you could go to to collect the dlc spirits, theyre all just in the dlc spirit board to just challenge like any spirit. And dlc is just handed to you after you complete the first 5 or so minutes of world of light, not even that far into the game, barely any effort to need to unlock them

Now it's just fucking PNGs that I can get by just googling a character's name. 2: World of Light was just slogging through a bunch of stupid battles on a bland ass map. I somehow 100%ed the entire World of Light and it got to a point where I was just running around three big ass maps trying to find the last dickhead I forgot to kill. 3: the bosses. Good lord, the only two/three that were actually good were Marx, Ganon and Dracula. Marx was at least like his actual in-game battle but the place you fight him in has NOTHING to do with Milkyway Wishes or even Kirby at all, Ganon actually kept his OoT weakness, and Dracula was actually fun. Giga Bowser is the most boring fucking thing ever (seriously, just give us an actual Bowser boss from the actual games and not just "Bowser but big and ugly"), Rathalos was a snoozefest and Galeom was... eh. Oh, and the final bosses you had were ASS. Lemme fight bosses from more franchises! Lemme fight Ridley! Lemme fight King K. Rool! Lemme fight Metal Face (I don't care for Xenoblade but fighting Metal Face in the Xenoblade stage is genuinly fun)! Gimme actual bosses!

damn i liked your previous videos but i really can't get behind this one, sadly. it wasn't really well researched (for instance, all spirits you currently have can be refought in the collection, you don't have to use the spirit board for that) and didn't even attempt to address any reasons people might like the spirit approach as opposed to trophies, instead just bringing up previous entries and subspace constantly. spirits allow the game to cover a much wider scope of characters, and instead of a description which either spoils the character's game or gives the player information they likely already know, spirits have unique fights that can emulate and reference specific parts of a character's background or series without spoiling or confusing players unfamiliar with the character. there are genuine points of criticism with spirits and WoL, like the multiplayer option to use spirits that feels unfair and an afterthought and even the lack of story which you brought up, but this video feels like it barely scratches the surface of meaningful analysis.
I really wish they hadn't spent dev time on the Spirits tbh. The game has some really rough edges and some character models (such as Shulk, Zero Suit Samus, etc.) and animations that look kind of unfinished to me, and had they cut the time on a boring side mode that no one liked to instead polish up the rest of the game, I feel like we'd have a much better product :(
I know it's easy to write a TH-cam comment as opposed to actually putting in the work to make a video, but this video is kind of the prime example of "I need something to talk about for ten minutes so here you go". It's not at all "wrong" to dislike any part of a game, and we can't use behind the scenes stories as an excuse for a shoddy product, but this video is made with such a narrow mindset that there's basically no point to it. "WoL would have been better if it was like Subspace." "Spirits would have been better if they had trophy descriptions." ..well, yeah, you're not wrong, but development resources, be it time, manpower, or money, are limited. Things can only go so far. It's like me saying "The game has 82 characters. It should have had 120 characters". I guess so, but that's not really feasible, is it? That's not really a statement which takes anything into account other than raw desire, which can extend to any imaginable point. It would have been a lot more interesting if you personally stated more as to WHY you didn't like these choices or tried to analyze on some level why it didn't work. As it stands now, this video is really just a list of the things that the mode is made up of, with a blank statement of "It's good", "It's bad", "It's underwhelming", etc applied to each.
There is a boss rush though, it's called Sephiroth's Classic Mode route.

That's not really a statement which takes anything into account other than raw desire, which can extend to any imaginable point. It would have been a lot more interesting if you personally stated more as to WHY you didn't like these choices or tried to analyze on some level why it didn't work. As it stands now, this video is really just a list of the things that the mode is made up of, with a blank statement of "It's good", "It's bad", "It's underwhelming", etc applied to each.
