Great video, Jenn! I think it should be noted that looking at selfies can be misleading about visual weight due to the distortion a selfie photo has. As someone with low visual weight features, I often like my selfies more than regular photos because I can get the high visual weight look that is popular.
Such a great point! I saw that TikTok has a new filter on what you actually look like vs in a selfie 🤳
That is a great point, maybe it could also be part of figuring it out.
I have high visual weight and I always dislike my selfies because it’s just too much and makes me look weird. I thought everyone felt like that.
Hello, I have the opposite situation, my selfies have less dimension and i love it😂☺️💕
@@stylerefinementhow is the filter called?
There was an article out last year about the rise in rhinoplasty because of selfies. The way cell phone cameras are built are that they focus more on the center and anything in the center is enlarged 30% ( average), so your nose is seen and captured as 30% larger than it actually is when you take a selfie, you don’t get an accurate sense of what your face really looks like. The most accurate photo of someone’s face is 5 feet away from the camera- this is according to the article.
This makes a lot of sense to me as someone with low visual weight features. Dramatic eye makeup always looked bad on me and I didn't know why. Sometimes I've tried to go with dramatic lip colours instead, but that doesn't look as good on me as it does on many other women either. So I will never have big eyes, but I can wear natural or hardly any makeup and look more harmonious, so now I know why and that makes me happy.
Yes, I agree with you as I feel the exact same.❤
I don't think soft looks look bad on me, but dramatic looks look better on me which makes sense because despite having tiny eyes I'm too angular and have deepset eyes so more dramatic looks (no fake lashes) look more harmonious with my too sharp angles. :(
@@Call-me-Al she didn't talk about angles really but you should go witih the look that makes you feel confident. My face is more rounded with chubby cheeks even when I'm thin, so that could be another reason why softer and more natural looks are more harmonious for me, which is also reflected in the lines of my clothing.
Im the same… what an epiphany & a release from the constant search for makeup colours that actually enhance instead of the total opposite… as in it’s not me entering a room but a weird mask like face… saving so much money with this new understanding 🤩❤️❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yes that's exactly how I feel with too much makeup, like I have a weird mask like face!
I like Dear peachie’s videos! But I didn’t understand very well about visual weight, now I understand better with your video.
And I’m glad to see asian examples because is frustrating to see only withe european/caucasian examples with other content creators!
I'm glad you liked the examples! ❤ Thanks for the comment!
At University we learned that visual weight is literally about weight. For example in a life drawing class we were drawing a nude. The lecturer would come around to each student and would give direction on what they could improve on. This is one of those moments that stuck in my mind
because it has made me a better artist. It was life changing
He said: To ground (visual weight) the person in my drawing, I need to see and define where the heavier parts of the object is and make it darker or emphasis the area, such as a thicker line or a shadow at the base of the hip so it doesn’t look like the figure is floating in the air.
So yes it’s about your eye being drawn to a more defined area but it’s more about contrast level and saturation as well.
If you look at seasonal colour analysis
Winter= high contrast (high visual weight and soft winter(medium to high.). Some soft winters may be like summers with a lower visual weight)
Autumn 3 types of Autumns are the same as winter in visual weight. The higher the contrast and the thicker the lines such as eyebrows and hair, then the heavier the visual weight.
Certain shapes have visual weight or the effect of visual weight.
Rounded curved lines are softer in appearance so therefore lighter in visual weight. Small rounded Ingénue types of women are lighter in visual weight regardless of body weight.
Natural body types like Jennifer Aniston has a heavier visual frame.
Blunt angles are heavier in visual weight. But Jennifer is a Summer so she has a blended aspect about her too which is lighter as well. Whatever dominates will be the focus.
Thanks for sharing with such detail
@@CrisOnTheInternet you’re very welcome 🌸
This makes so much sense, thank you!
@@lilymulligan8180I’m glad to help, you’re welcome. 🌺
You just explained the points I was thinking about while watching the video very nicely, thank you so much! I think people who have at least a bit of an artistic background will automatically view people and objects a bit differently than anyone who has absolutely no relationship with anything artistic. I used my background in drawings, paintings, photography and videography, also in doing hair, make up and choosing outfits for people. But I was never able to do those things "right" for myself. That's how I got interested in Kibbe, Kitchener and seasonal color analysis. To be able to look at myself from another perspective. Things like your comment help me tying everything together as I like to combine any aspect of visual influence.
E.g. I feel like my entire face has a pretty high visual weight, but I am a light spring and also a flamboyant natural with a heavy influence of gamine essence (and a few others that can stick out more or less depending on the surroundings). However, I can also add more emphasis to the ethereal and ingenue parts of my essence blend, but that never feels quite right as soon as I move (it works nicely in photography and videography, as long as it's a controlled scenario). When I add to the gamine part of my essence blend and don't overdo it, it looks balanced and "at home". I always feel like my Kibbe ID sits a bit more in the background but gives me the freedom to add some ease into my outfits and my make up. Like adding only slightly defined lines and shapes rather than very structured and staccato lines a Kibbe gamine would need. It's finally fun to play with my own looks rather than just doing it for others.
I also wanted to note: I never did any of the things meantioned above professionally besides videography. But I had a lot of hobbies incorporating all of these things and I always got asked to help style models, do make up, assist in photography and lighting and choosing outfits for the models. It was a lot of fun and taught me a lot.
Visual weight also occurs in interior design, clothing designs/outfits, nature and basically anything else we can see with out bare eyes. And if we really learn to understand and use it as a tool, we can create literally any impact we want in anything we can visually influence. It's a fun tool and I think I always used it without even knowing.
4:14 this is a PERFECT explanation of why i thought big lashes did not suit me. I'm black and i'm sure you've seen in social media that big lashes are usually used to exaggerate our eyes. The look is gorgeous, but once i tried it on me i realised that it was 'too heavy' for my face. I switched to cat eye lashes which are usually lighter and people would compliment me much more with them on! Soon enough, i found the perfect kinds of falsies for me where whispier, 10-11mm lashes that i'd often cut to 3/4 length!
They just work so much better amongst my low visual weight/ ingenue features!
I feel the same way about false lashes! I always have to use a more natural style and cut it about 3/4 length as well :D
Get what you're saying. I've seen quite a number of individuals that, when wearing heavy or dramatic lashes, their eyes look smaller. I'm not sure if they recognize this or not.
i must be low visual weight - nothing is striking about me. But that's precisely why I have to accentuate my eyes. When I do, I become visible all of a sudden. People compliment me for my eyes. But without make up, there is nothing to compliment : I have cold brown eyes, uneven eyelids and light and short eyelashes.
Its the opposite for me i have to do less
Same!! My features are so undefined that when I don't accentuate them they look like they're floating on my face.
I have low visual weight and low contrast features with light blonde hair, light lashes, light eyebrows, light eyes. None of my features really stand out, but I honestly like it since it looks overall very harmonic. If I wear make up I look drastically different and if it's just a tad too much I look borderline clownish. I save SO much time in the morning cause I only apply bit of rouge and lipstick and I'm ready to go. However, sometimes I really envy women who can pull off heavy make with smokey eyes or bold lips, they can play around with different looks without looking like a circus pony.
I'm certain you can look great in more dramatic looks, worst case you might just need some temporary dye for your hair, eyebrows etc
I think you might be able to do a smokey eye look but with much lighter colors, for example, medium and light shades of grey, brown, and/or taupe.
@@rachelmilloy7640 Great point!
I’m a relatively new hairstylist (3 years) and I have really felt like I’ve struggled to develop an eye for face shapes and determining what hairstyles and cuts best suit them. This channel has made it all click for me in such an easy and digestible way. Thank you so, so much for this information! I’m excited to apply this all on the floor, and actually be able to customize with intention, and explain with ease. You’re a gem!
Thank you so much for the compliment ❤️ I’m glad you’re finding the content helpful!!
My features have low visual weight. This is awesome because if I wear more makeup than usual, I simply look like I have a lot of makeup on but don’t necessarily look better.
I can relate! Even a little more makeup looks like a lot on me, but it's not necessarily for the better :)
The only feature on my face that adds any visual weight is my somewhat prominent nose. I always feel like I look best when I go easy on the makeup. Whenever I try to apply more, I feel like it’s too much and that I need to back off.
This is really interesting, thank you! It seems to me that faces with low visual weight draw greater attention to the hair and skin. That “clean girl” look with of shiny, simple hair and clear skin and very minimal makeup, is one I really love, but doesn’t seem to work on me, and I think it’s because my face has high visual weight.
That is right, I have low visual weight and before I knew it I barely spent money on makeup. Instead, I always spent on skincare and time, effort and money to my hair because I felt so ugly when using makeup that I preferred to take care of my skin and hair to balance due to not being able to use makeup. And people (even before startin skincare and hair care) always the first two things that complimented me were skin and hair. And of course, after taking care of them, those are always the first compliments I get, and then when people met me they started complimenting my eyes, or my lips, that is why I always felt ugly because since my skin and hair always got the compliments, I thought there were the only features that made me beautiful.
Makes so much sense. I’m a low weight face, my sister high weight face. When I do very light makeup with special care to make my skin look healthy and she does a dark smoky eye and red lips, we both look equally done up. I’ve never bothered to learn how to do better eye makeup and wished I had that skill, but now I don’t have to stress about nailing that bold look. I’ll find more examples of glowy, soft for my coloring with I think is deep, soft autumn.
Thank you so much for your videos! I have been watching a lot of long-form content about color seasons like dear peachie's content, and those have its merits as they go in depth and full detail. But briefer videos like yours are an excellent summary to wrap up and review the most basic highlights (or to introduce people to the concepts).
I'm glad you're enjoying my content! Thank you for the thoughtful comment ❤️
At first I thought the video was going to be too long considering the topic, now I realize it wasnt long enough - you only got to scratch the surface! 😆 Very informative and interesting, thank you!
I'm glad you liked it! 😍
I have low visual weight, and this is why I prefer bleaching my hair to light blonde - I can look done (harmonious) with barely any makeup. Saved me so much time!
It could also be your color season and contrast level!
@stylemejenn I'm a "True Winter" with pale skin. Seasonal color (and systems like Kibbe) is good as a reference but it's not set in stone, and there's confliciting and confusing info because it's flawed. One can pull off colors that are not their season if they can match their makeup and clothes to harmonize the look (but whether worth the effort or not is another matter).
Like your skin color... you can pull off both cool and warm colors not due to having neutral tones (it leans more warm for sure!) but because your skin is more dusky vs clear. So even if you pick a cool color, as long as it has grey added that match your chroma it will harmonize.
So far I've seen all your videos and I'm amazed by your knowledge and unique point of view regarding beauty. I have high visual weight and usually stick to more natural makeup but I'm going to try something heavier for once to see how I'm going to like it.
I'm glad to hear you're finding my content helpful! ❤❤ Yes it's all about trial & error so try something different!
This was well explained. So easy to understand. I have high visual weight in my eyes , eyebrows , cheek bones and lips . My eyes are always the prominent focus because of the contrast. I don't look good with short hair in particularly. The shortest hairstyle that suits me is a gradient ,angled lob cut. Anything shorter or straight blunt cuts make my face look fat and babyish.
Short hair can really depend a lot on your facial features and proportions apart from just visual weight! My video this week will explain some of those factors :)
@@stylerefinement I have my ideas, but I can't wait to hear your hypothesis
to all my fellow balanced low visual weight faced friends: if you want to go for a bold look go for it but kinda everywhere. If i have a dark smokey eye i NEED to have darker and more prominent lipstick as well as something on the cheecks to make it "one". if its about balance and you dont want to go super natural all the time just make a colorful, grunge, glamorous, whatever you like balance! lots of love and thank u jenn for this amazing channel :))
I have to try this out. I always feel like something is off when I try bolder eye looks cause I usually prefer the rest of my face to look more natural. Also is it a low visual weight thing to feel like makeup can overpower your face? Cause I have that issue too
@@Karinavision23 I guess so, I feel the same way but I don't see it as a bad thing, I just need less makeup than others to make it look bold and dramatic. I am also a deep summer so I never go for black but dark brown or purplish grey something like that. it's not about what exactly you wear, more about how it makes you look :)
Thank you for this tip! ❤❤❤
I agree! This strategy works for me too. I have high contrast between hair and skin but my eyebrows are much lighter than my hair, so darkening my brows and putting colour on my lips totally brings my face into focus.
😊
Hello, I really enjoyed your video as always. I was wondering if you could create a video tutorial for various bun styles suitable for different face shapes, such as high buns, low buns, buns with bangs, or buns with face-framing pieces, etc. Most tutorials seem to focus on open hair, but I believe many girls wear buns on a daily basis.
I'll add different styles of updo's to my list and see what I can come up with! :D
I like this video, thanks! I analyzed my face and I have medium visual weight in my eyes and mouth, high weight in my wider nose. My eyes are smallish, deeply set, and high contrast and my lips medium size/contrast, on a round oval face. What I like best for my type of face is basically the Marylin look or a French style, a bold lip and accentuating the outer corners of the eyes. I like to keep the brows defined but soft with light or medium contrast. All I need if I'm in a hurry (besides concealer) is a bit of eye liner on the outer corners, mascara, and most importantly lipstick, which doubles as my blush :)
I'm a case of low visual weight but with deep contrast. Genuine makeup technique suits me the most but using my winter colours instead of pastel colours. That being said, bold makeup would not make me look bad either because I naturally has smokey eyes and lips already. It just that my cheeks are quite fleshy and my features are not well defined. I don't have a high visual weight despite the natural contrast I have in my skin and features. So, balancing technique works the best on me. Though sometimes if I want to go bold in either only the eyes or lips, it's not a problem either. The difference is not big between balancing features or emphasizing features on me.
I used to feel like there was *too* much going on around my eyes: they're dark brown, and I'm very pale, so there's a lot of contrast, and glasses brought more attention up there. On top of that, I like having bangs. Not all the time, I periodically grow them out and cut them back, lol.
I got a bunch of lip piercings, and now I feel there's more balance overall.
Not that I'd recommend that to people who aren't into alt-styles or piercings! It's just something that worked for my style.
Maybe a bolder color or a glossy finish on the lips would be alternatives if you're not into piercings! :)
I love this concept, it’s all coming together!
I think Lucy Liu looks great either way, but the first set of pics on the right had very cold lighting and colors that didn’t suit her
Fair point about lighting!
You never miss 💕
Hehe thank youuuu ❤️ glad you liked the video!
Great topic once again! I followed you on Instagram! I look forward to seeing great things happen there too!
Thank you Linda!! I’ve been sharing some of the IG reels on YT shorts (ones that are less than a minute) but I plan on sharing more practical makeup tips through the IG account ❤️❤️❤️
I'm so glad I finally got around to watching this one! I have a lot of low visual weight features -- fair skin, blue eyes, light brown hair, very pale and thin brows, small lips and not very defined cheek or jaw bones -- but I have a long middle third and a prominent nose. I'm like a combo Hailey Beiber and Renee Zellweger. I'm learning from you that the best thing for me to do is create visual width and to bring subtle emphasis to my eyes. I've also figured out recently that the competing energy of my yin features and yang nose looks best if I contrast the yin and harmonize the yang. So a more natural makeup, bob hair and Ray-Ban glasses will make my nose look in proportion, my yin features more delicate, and give overall a kind of cool vibe. But if I harmonize the yin with more feminine glasses, heavier makeup, longer or softer hair, it just makes my yang features take over and instead of looking pretty and feminine, I look dowdy, frumpy and matronly. It's been a real game changer that's given me the confidence to take some risks that I've always wanted to explore but wasn't sure how.
such a great video! I immediately knew my face had a low visual weight as soon as you got into the examples - makes so much sense
I'm glad you found the video helpful! ❤
Love this video! And i love how you always analyze WOC too, including some of my favourite k-drama actresses 😊
Can you please please do a similar video focusing on brown/ South Asian actresses as well?? I find that as a general rule of thumb, brown women can pull off more dramatic makeup looks...but on the other hand, how to do a minimalist/ no-makeup look on someone like Priyanka, Deepika Padukone or Kareena Kapoor??

It's all about balance! Even though I have darker coloring and features, I can identify with SJP or Julia Roberts because of the prominence of my nose. I gravitate towards eye liner and deeper, smoky eye colors in the crease (pale colors of shadow look dreadful). I wear tinted moisturizer and a bit of concealer, but I rarely use blusher and never use contour. Sheer color with shine on my lips works the best for balancing my overall appearance. I was trying to wear my hair with long layers and long bangs, then I went to a lob. But, all my travel photos make my broad forehead steal the attention from my eyes, and I feel like it just accentuated all of my wrinkles. Now, I am sporting a pixie with bangs, and I feel like I look more youthful and my features are more balanced...my eyes, smile, cheekbones and jawline really shine. Guess I have a medium to high visual weight?
Based on your description and your profile pic I feel like you have high visual weight Andrea! A pixie also draws our gaze in an upward direction which is helpful in drawing more emphasis to the eyes :) I actually explain this exact concept in the video coming out this Friday! ❤️
I think that lighter hair color suits to people with low visual weight more, because dark hair creates the contrast between accentuative hair and non-accentuative face. Although people with high visual weigh pull out dark hair, because it accentuates their face even more.
But even in the video, Sarah Jessica Parker can pull off blonde hair. I think I'm low contrast, and blonde was the worst look I ever had, that with any caramel colour. Nature knows best. Most of the time, natural hair looks better.
@@tuscanleather3209 i don't think that natural hair always looks better. Nature created hair to help you to warm your body and not for aesthetical uses, so nature doesn't care what your hair color is and how well does it compliment your face.
@sashaj1 The function of hair doesn't matter when we're talking about harmony. High contrast people will have a much bigger difference in hair, eyes, and lips than those with lower ones. Rarely, you see a person on the street and think to yourself, I hope that hair isn't natural.. It looks so dull. I've seen a woman with natural highlights. She was quite soft in colouring, but the hair looked marbled, and it was all natural. Besides...nature does care about beauty. Ever looked at male peacocks... There is so much beauty in this world, not only man made one's. If we were to look at all nature's beauty, there is a purpose. If our looks are 'to attract attention of the opposite sex', then it would make a lot of sense that we evolved to match our appearances.
I absolutely love your videos! I have learned so much about facial features and how to style them in the most flattering ways. You go into it to a depth that is not widely discussed and known only to a few. Keep it up!

Wow, I knew what you meant by high and low visual weight in faces before I ever watched your video even though I have never heard anyone use those words to describe faces but I had in reference to art and design. I have blond hair and blue eyes and very delicate features. I have had makeovers and I felt prettier when I walked in. I always look my best at the pool or beach, but I never feel right going without makeup or under made up at dinner or when I was young out at a club. I have tried so hard to figure out how much makeup it takes on my eyes before the beauty goes right out of them. Dyed lashes look much prettier on me than mascara but I got afraid of the dye and stopped using it. I had a "famous" makeup artist do my makeup about 10 years ago or so at my hair salon. I tried to explain the concept to him but he acted like I was talking nonsense. Also they made up one side of my face and not the other and compared the two which I found humiliating because I knew I didn't look better in the made up side. It felt hopeless. I have known I look prettier with less makeup since I was about 20 but I never understood why till now. I can't begin to thank you enough for helping me crack this code. I wish I had this when I was younger.
I'm glad you found the video helpful! ❤❤❤
Same for me, in my case, it really affected my self steem by having low visual weight. It all started when teenager I wanted to look pretty with makeup like my friends but never looked good. I knew something was different with my face but I couldn’t figure it out. I soon realized that the more natural I looked, the best I looked. So people were always complimenting my natural beauty and advising that if I looked this good natural, I should doll up but they could never understand why I always refused. All my beauty washed away with makeup. And I always felt uncomfortable on formal situations I just wanted to look that good with the standard makeup and clothes like high visual weight women (which I did not know it at that time). And I always felt ugly for that. I even considered specific plastic surgery to make me more “beautiful” but those surgeries were only to add high visual weight on my face now that I realize. If I should have known this low/high visual weight before, I think my life would’ve been so diferent.
Please a video on tips for people with big bulgy nose and how to reduce the visual impact and draw attention to other features . I feel like Nothing is working in favor.. 😣😣
I do have a video called "Hair & Makeup Tips for Prominent Noses" which you should check out next!
I never could understand why I Iooked so different from other European-descent American females of my age until, as an adult, I saw some of my school-age group photos. My head, face and features are about a quarter to a third smaller than the average girls in my classes were. It makes sense, I have very tiny frame, too, but was not super-short, just narrow-boned (lost 2 inches from aging now, age 63). The resulting musculature is proportionally lighter, too. This gives me a delicate look that belies my normal weight and good health, except for that ghastly, pasty, Euro-pallor, which I can’t seem to do much about. So I suppose my face has lower visual weight, my contrast level of coloring is low to medium. My later classmates called me bird-bones, which I didn’t really understand at the time. Of course, I later learned that birds have not only delicate, but literally lightweight bones. Petites size clothing works a lot better on me, I never had the shoulder or hip width for regular sizes, my frame is very narrow.
My eyebrows are so light naturally that it creates a 'negative space' effect on my face =(
But that could be a look itself!! Idk I’ve been really into light eyebrows these days, even though lots of people tell me I look better with darker brows 😆
@@stylerefinement I hate it on myself. Maybe if I had a smaller forehead or lighter hair that made it make more sense, but I've always hated how they look on my face
@@stylerefinementI always think you look great with those lighter eyebrows and it was made clear well in that particular video you talked about the issue.

Hello, Thank You so much for every video Jenn, everything is so helpful and interesting, such a need☺️😍💖💕💕
I'm glad you're finding my content helpful! ❤
My eyebrows are dark snd thick. I think that's what people see on me first. I've never touched them , I'm thinking of cleaning it a bit tho. Bit because of my eyebrows my stylist (well, the woman in the neighbourhood who also does my hair from time to time) says dark colours on lips doesn't suit me at all
If you decide to pluck your eyebrows, only pluck from the bottom to remove stray hairs. Leave the top as it is because Mother Nature usually knows what she’s doing, giving you a near-perfect shape. People who mess with the tops of their eyebrows are usually remorseful.
Remember, thick eyebrows read as young, healthy and strong because they can thin as you age. Also, keep in mind that, if you pluck your eyebrows, they might not grow back, especially if you pluck them over and over again because plucking traumatizes the follicles. Something many ladies learn the hard way. :-(
Oh my gosh now I know why I feel I look so weird without my dark eyeliner and mascara! I have big eyes but also nose and I feel like my mascara and eyeliner give more emphasis to my eyes instead of drawing the attention to my nose!
Thank you, your videos are sooo interesting and informative!
You're welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying my content 😊❤
Jenn, my eyebrows are the LEAST contrasted part of my face!!! I have fair skin, dark blue eyes and Auburn/darker red hair, but my lashes and brows are white blonde. I've been tinting them brown for 20 years to match my medium/high contrast level, but it's annoying that I feel like an alien without them 'done' :(
Maybe at least when I go grey I will look harmonious...
I rather like the lighter eyebrow look!! It doesn't bring as much definition as darker brows but I think it creates a particular "ethereal" vibe which I think is so unique and gorgeous ♥♥♥
Maybe that’s why I love collars so much, they seem to make my small face more apparent or substantial, if that makes sense. At least they draw the eye to the face.
Do you also like chokers? I feel like chokers make me feel more “me”/ I get the most compliments on how I look when I wear chokers/ turtlenecks.
This is why I never looked good with super heavy eye makeup on my top lid! I always felt sad about that, but now I’m just happy I save money on eyeshadow 😂

This has always confused me, but I think I understand it a lot better after watching your video! However I'm still not quite sure what side I fall on. I have somewhat prominent, round, dark blue eyes, and a lot of natural contrast between my face and my hair/brows, so I'm leaning towards higher visual weight. But the arch of my brows and the placing of my eyes can pull them slightly apart (much less extreme than Anya Taylor Joy but I related to a few things you said about her), and my lips are also rounded and noticeable, so they pull some of the attention, too. I have an average nose, fairly equal thirds, and a face somewhere between an oval and a diamond, so nothing else really grabs the attention. I think my best looks are classic and glamorous, with both eye and lip emphasis. Way too much eye makeup (like a super dark smoky eye) can feel too heavy, however if the makeup is too minimal or nude it doesn't do me any favors, and I can look sickly. Nude lipstick is terrible (though that may also be due to my coloring - I'm a bright spring). I try to find that sweet spot of makeup that can help emphasis my natural contrast without going overboard, though I can have fun playing around to an extent. I feel like I need striking but harmonious at the same time. Would this put me in the middle or is that more on the high side?
Based on your description I think you lean closer to the high visual weight side! :D
@@stylerefinement thank you so much! That's so helpful, and the more I think about it the more it makes sense. It's something I will keep in mind when I watch future videos, and I think I'll go back through some of the previous ones where you refer to this concept too now that I understand it better!

I think I'm lucky in this subject. I'm no striking beauty that makes heads turn in the street, but after listening I think I have a heavier visual weight but my different features are harmonious. I don't really wear make up anymore and I have no problems with that but when I do, I can put some mascara on for a Bambi eye effect and I look all nice and sweet or I can go with a heavy smokey eyeshadow with or without bold lips and rock that style. Same with the hair with the exception of not going shorter than my shin/jawline.

REQUEST: Please explain when high-contrast lip liners are beneficial. I have seen it on celebrities but less often in fashion magazines. Is it the control or lack of control of lighting from povarizzi flashes vs. studio lighting (not to mention photoshopping)? Or is the high contrast a magician's misdirection? Whenever I see a friend with high-contrast lip liner I have to bite MY lips to stop myself from telling them that their lip color has worn off in the middle. I do not understand the aesthetic intention and I feel uncomfortable about the sexual message whether intentional or not.
Thanks. I am new to the channel and I find everything very informative and relevant. I will look for that video.@@irisellie5139
I just think it's a trend that's made a comeback! I've never been fond of the style myself but it does add more edge to the overall look which I think can be often suitable for editorials or on celebrities whose styles are very "out there"!
Paparazzi flashes definitely affect how good a celebrity looks!
Could you talk about pamela Anderson no makeup look and why ot worked or not?
as somone who covers there gace on a daily baisses its always intrszting to see how humans care so much about appearence while simutaniously hiding that fact
So interesting! I'm going to subscribe! One thing you didn’t mention was glasses... how do they play with the visual weight of a person's face?
Welcome to the channel! I think that glasses act as a way to draw more emphasis to the eyes, but also can make the eyes smaller (depending on your prescription) so the two effects offset each other!
@@stylerefinement Thank you! That's interesting... I see what you're saying about glasses. Can't wait to delve more into your channel (when I get some time!) and hear more of your thoughts! I need so much help with this stuff and you explain it so well!
How would one with low visual weight go about wedding/formal makeup looks? Those are usually very dark and intense and don’t look good on me at all. But I still want it to look like its for a special occasion and not just like my everyday makeup.
There are also light and natural makeup styles for wedding looks as well! Especially the East Asian bridal styles ♥ I think rather than with makeup, hair & accessories (and obviously the dress lol) can add more glamor to the overall look!
What I've figured out recently is that my eyes are the most assymetrical so no matter visual weight of my other features I think i'll withhold from good-old eyeball accentuating looks.
This explains why bright lipsticks never look good on me. I have very heavy visual weight on the bottom half of my face and the eyes are drawn to my lips and chin. I started gravitating towards nude lipsticks and was so confused why everyone talks crap about nude lipsticks when they look good on me.
All depends on your own features! ❤
I perceive myself as ugly, but I'm a high visual weight person
if that's u in ur pfp, ur not ugly at all
@@randommfk it's me, maybe the way I perceive myself is not the best, but without the makeup I don't look like this
I agree!
Without makeup none of us look like our profile pics :) You're beautiful ❤️
@@stylerefinement exactly! Maybe I should say that I'm not conventionally beautiful (I was bullied because of that), but I don't dislike my looks, either, they are quite unique, I have super big eyes, androgynous features, long nose and thin lips, they make makeup super fun. You are stunning, and I love your channel!!❤️❤️❤️
Happy Friday, Jenn! ☺️
Happy Friday and Happy weekend!! ☺️❤️
Wow ❤ great video I get it now ❤
Glad you found it helpful! ❤
I actually see that with SJP darker hair looks better
Daytime make-up is minimal for me, but when it comes to a girls night out, that's when I wear more make-up (eyes and lips).
Hi very interesting. Never thought about it but now am 💃🏾🍰☕️
Would it be possible for someone to just...fall in the medium vidual weight catagory? For example, my eyes are large and round and most likely have highest visual weight, but when you look at my face overall nothing immediately draws attention, and just kind of wafts over the face? Nothing is extremely soft or extremely sharp or out of proportion
Yes it's all on a spectrum so medium visual weight is definitely possible! :)
I tried to figure out my visual weight, then I put my glasses on and realized that I didn't really matter because even being on the small side draw all the attention away from my features.
Now I understand why I couldn't pull off blonde
Excellent !!!!!!
Thank you so much! ❤
That's CL before and after plastic surgery. Thats also Rene Zellweger before and after surgery.... Most of the people you're showing have had a lot of work done.
Sure, but not to the point where the visual weight of their features changes though.
Awesome video! I think I might have high visual weight since I look kinda sickly with no-makeup makeup. I have dark brown eyes and black eyebrows and light-ish skin, but my eyes aren't that big. I feel like I have a facial configuration kinda like Anya's where both the lips and the eyes call the eye (in my case, probably the lips first) but I also have a longer middle third that I feel creates some empty space in my face in my cheeks and below the eyes.
What could I do to bring more attention to the eyes and mouth and away from this space? Bolder eye makeup and bold lipstick? I thought of perhaps always wearing glasses that go low on the cheeks as well, but I'm always unsure about my blush placement relative to the glasses.
Def take it with a grain of salt because I’m not Jen but I think plumper, shinier lips that cover more of the bottom face, and, since your brows pull the eye upward by being black, a bit of an upturned eye will be really good. I personally do the aegyo Sal thing as well, but not everyone benefits from it. It does take out some of that middle third length though, in case you do like it ! 😊 hopefully I’m not leading you down the wrong path
@@shirin9452 Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! I think that what you said makes a lot of sense. I noticed that when I wear darker lipstick my face looks more balanced (as opposed to 60s makeup looks). I'm definitely also trying aegyo sal, ty so much once again for the tips! :)
I agree with the aegyo-sal highlight like the reply, although it's not for everyone as she said! If the emphasis is drawn to your lips first already, I think matching the level to your eyes with bolder eye makeup would be a good choice. On my IG I'm also releasing some makeup tips on glasses this week so take a look there for some practical tips for wearing makeup when you wear glasses! :D
great topic! i just subbed. i luv ur perspective esp coming from an asian :D
Welcome to the channel! ❤
This is the video I really need!🎉🎉 I have big eyes with prominent Korean eye bags (but double eyelids turned into hooded when I smile), medium size nose that looks a little big because my nose bridge is low, a plump medium size lips that fits my face, and a lot of cheeks. I always thought that my visual weight is high because I have big eyes, but because my eyes can’t really take on bold makeup I got confused.
Seems like I just have a big eyes but somehow still got low visual weight? But your Asian examples of low visual weight always have the “delicate” impression which I don’t relate? Is it because of your example pictures or do I actually have high visual weight that couldn’t go for gold makeup? 😂
Hmm it's really hard for me to say without seeing the face, but it may also be the specific style of makeup? Especially if your crease lines are narrow (which I assume since you mentioned that your eyelids turn hooded when you smile), bolder styles that completely close off the crease lines can seem off on you!
I'm definitely high visual weight as I have large eyes and thin lips.
What to do if you have high visual weight, but low contrast? My eyes are large and have a prominent shape, but their contrast is really low and muted, and makeup looks jarring on them. How can I emphasize my eyes without overpowering them?
Asking Jenn or anyone who has any ideas 🙏
I would use colors that are in harmony with your coloring, and not highly saturated. I have the same features, and I do a taupe or a muted red/pink colored smokey eye, with taupe, gunmetal, grey, brown, or olive colors.
Ive also switched to brown mascara, and I feel like this has made a big difference
Try variations of the “soft glam” look. I have also switched to clear mascara or light eyebrow mascara instead of doing my makeup the same way that everyone else does. I feel like I look better and awesome, and at the end of the day, that’s honestly whose opinion matters the most :)
I'd like to echo the suggestion on soft glam makeup styles! I think they're great at adding the oomph without too much boldness ❤
My face is visually over-weight 😭😭😭
Can't be a bad thing!!
As you age, your face loses fat. A nice plump face is a sign of youth.
So cute 😍
Ok Lucy liu is literally the most beautiful person on earth she is like the only celeb I would like to meet and talk to. Like I LOVE her and if I had to pick anyone to look like it would be her. I’ve always noticed that she has the most “vertical” eyes I’ve ever seen on anyone. I think it’s what makes her truly gorgeous. But does this mean that the angle of the eyes being very steep is still not a high visual weight factor unless the eyes are very large? (I too think she doesn’t need a ton of eye makeup). If her cheekbones help draw the eye upward because they’re high, why don’t her very upturn angled eyes?
And a question. I generally define my eyes slightly because they start to look crazy with anything but a little eyeshadow wing. But I always do something with them as my go-to. Now I’ve been hearing lately that because of my color analysis recs, I should generally wear a bright lip. So that leaves me with emphasis on eyes and lips. Isn’t this going to look haphazard? I can’t disagree that a bold lip is actually great for my face. But I do have a prominent, long, wide (?) nose so I believe I should be trying to keep everything going upward.
Will ofc follow you on insta! Thank you as always for your amazing content 😊 literally this and dear peachie are the only notifications I jump for
I also think Lucy Liu's drastically upturned eyes are so beautiful! ❤ The angle of the eyes can definitely help with drawing more emphasis upwards as well, but I think that eyes serve a more important function of deciphering the overall impression of the face. With Lucy's case they're what add sexiness to her look imo.
As for your question I think that using your eyebrows can be a way to draw emphasis upwards when you wear a bolder lip, if you're concerned that too much emphasis on both eyes and lips are not going to be very harmonious. Using a more defined arch style in your brows will naturally help with drawing more attention in an upward direction! Thanks for always leaving such detailed comments ❤❤❤
Great video! Would a less weighty face be considered delicate?
I think it depends on the bone structure!
What if the flaws are the visual weight of the face? Eg extremely big and low cheekbones? Is visual weight a positive feature, not just an obvious feature?
No she says in the beginning of the video that neither is better than the other; they're just different.
Ugh that SJP hair color explanation kind of blew my mind. I have dark hair, a wide face, big green eyes and my nose I'd say is on the bigger side. Would making my hair blonde or lighter change the whole proportions of my face!? Making it appear wider or something? Oh man, I'm confused 😭
A lighter color can make the face appear wider, but whether it's more suitable for you or not depends on the rest of your facial features ♥
@@stylerefinementTrue, thank you! 🙏
Will that be something you'll discuss on your next video? Hairstyles/hair colors? That would be really helpful for me atm!! 🥺
Also be mindful of undertone, blonde on natural dark hair can make u look sickly pale. I kno cus I did it! lol
Please make a video about longer chins,( hair, makeup...) i feel like nobody talks about this😅
I have a couple of videos! One for Prominent Lower Third and one for blonde hair, which both talk about long chins :)
Love how you give information and examples, but then leave it up to the viewer to decide which look they wish to achieve. You let us be the "expert," and that is so valuable to one's self esteem. Also, I disagree with you about Asian womens' visual weight because I am always facinated by their lips. I think Asian women, generally, have the most kissable lips. The mouth looks full, soft, and just so kissable on almost all Asian women.
I’m glad you like my approach! ❤️ Not all Asian women have low visual weight ☺️
Correction: that is NOT what she said!!! That is what HE said !!!

Welcome to the channel ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t tell if I have high or visual weight. I have average sized downturned eyes, thick dark brows and a long nose.
It's hard to tell based on your description alone but it's a spectrum so you could even be medium!
I have small eyes but bold dark eyebrows I also have really long bottom lashes that are dark so k don’t know if that would bring up my visual weight ? The rest of my features don’t really stand out other than my nose which is a little long.
Long bottom lashes do add more vertical length to the eyes and make the appear bigger! If you have bold dark brows they also brings up the level of visual weight as well :)
Very interesting, I realized that darker eye shadows don't suit me that much maybe because I have dark eyebrows. Lately I've using color eyerliner instead of an eye shadow. On the other hand pop the color on my lips I believe balances my features.
It could be that the distance between your eyes and your eyebrows is short?? I find when this distance is short darker eyeshadow makes your eyes appear more closed off!
@@stylerefinement actually I have a little bit of hooded eye but the space between the crease and the eyebrow is wide.
Drawing more attention to your eyes doesn't seem to be a good idea for people wearing glasses. I think that more than half of a population do wear them, drastically changeing proportion of whole face, because lenses can for example make you naturally big eyes look smaller, especially for people with high myopia. Unfortunatelly, not everyone has such perfect health as celebrities.
I can relate! I wore glasses for 20+ years until I got LASIK a few years ago and my prescription was pretty high so my eyes always appeared much smaller. I do also think that glasses themselves act as a way to draw emphasis to the eye area though :)
Actually I really like my glasses, I have high contrast with bigger eyes (Soft Gamine, Bright Winter colors), and due to my glasses I could wear much heavier, more eye & lipstick focused makeup than others. Everytime I feel kinda uh maybe this will be too much, I just put on my glasses and everything clicks to the right decent weight 😂
Low visual faces look more delicate overall
so... if you have big black eyes but everything else its small and muted you still have high vistual weight?
Your eyes must have high visual weight, but if the rest of your features have low visual weight that might put you somewhere in the medium level :)
If i think i look better without noticeable makeup, does that likely mean my features have low visual weight?
I think it really depends on your own preference as well. I don't think it's a conclusive factor that decides the visual weight of the face!
And what if you have to wear very thick glasses that make your eyes look tiny? :D
I think that glasses act as a way to draw more emphasis towards the eye area, which kinda offsets how small the eyes become with high prescription
can you do video abt noses
I have a video called “Tips for Prominent Noses”!
@@stylerefinement well, thats kinda different
What about those who wear glasses??
Glasses act as a way to draw emphasis towards the eye area!
