Hi Miss Gina, I'm of Polish and German descent and I make sauerkraut with a few other ingredients. I add apple sauce and brown sugar, a grated carrot, onion, and some bacon that has been browned and cut into small pieces. In the bacon grease, I add flour and make a roux. Then I add a chopped onion to cook with the roux. I add all of these ingredients to the sauerkraut which has been simmering on the stove. I also add some caraway seed to make it Bavarian style. It's delicious and my family loves it.
My Grammy was PA Dutch. Pork and sauerkraut and potatoes for new year's. Something about the chicken scratching backwards and the pig grunting forwards, and sauerkraut(cabbage) "money" lol love it anyway. But this year, ham, collards, ahem, "black eyed peas" and sweet potatoes! Ooooweee love ya Miss Gina stay well and stay blessed!

Our family tradition is sauerkraut balls..made like meatballs, using ground chuck, ground pork, sauerkraut, onion soup mix, egg, seasonings, mix into meatballs and roll in bread crumbs..then bake in oven!..so good!
My mama would make sauerkraut. Her receipie was similar to yours. The difference she would rinse her sauerkraut in water and strain it. Heat 1 table spoon of bacon fat in a skilllet. Saute onions and green bell peppers, add sauerkraut as well as salt, pepper and sugar to taste. In addition her sauerkraut was delicious on hot dogs.

I make my own kraut every year! Typically I’ll have about 14 quarts, I use cabbage , green tomatoes and banana peppers, allow it to ferment, it’s delicious!!!!

I tried sour kraut out of a pack only on a hot dog, but willing to try with the left over spanish pork roast for that sweet and sour taste. Happy New year my friend.
My family makes sauerkraut and kielbasa.We never add anything sweet, I was an adult when I first tried sweetened sauerkraut.its very different to what I am used to.We also fry a little oil and flour to help thicken the sauerkraut.
I don't like my sauerkraut sweet or vinegary... so this is what I do with my sauerkraut. I mostly cook some peeled and quartered potatoes. Then saute lots of onion in a bit of butter to brown it, add the sauerkraut with juices, add 1 or 2 beef bouillon cubes, garlic powder, lightly cover and turn it down to med low and let it simmer softly. Add the potatoes to finish cooking in the sauerkraut juices. Sometimes I add caraway seed or dill weed for added flavor. While that's going, I brown some polish, italian or bratwurst. When brown, I drop those into the sauerkraut mix too. The sauerkraut has a delightful mild flavor. I also use the extra juice from sauerkraut, pickles, hot peppers and other vegetables in my soups for flavor.

I'm originally from the Pittsburgh PA area and sauerkraut or cabbage is part of our New Years Day tradition. I always add some type of pork to mine, usually kielbasa or ham. This year I'll be making cabbage. One tip, I buy plastic white spoons to use for tasting my food. I place them in one of those big red cups near my stove. That way I taste and throw away the spoon. Got that tip from Emeril.

My dad always cooks his specail kraut each new year. He cooked his pulled pork slowly in a crock pot all day. After thats done then cooks the krout for another couple of hrs with the pulled pork, seasonings pepperoni and caraway seed. Not sure what seasonings hes using. We love mashed potatoes with it and green beans. Oh and the blk eyed peas. I usally make smothered pork chops as well for those that dont like kraut. We also make the smothered cabbage and fried potatoes. oh and cant forget the cornd bread😜

I had a great aunt that was German and she made her own sauerkraut. It was so good. I learned to grate potatoes in it to cut the acid tartnes.
