  • Another soluble ink sketch on Cold Press paper. The advantage of the cold press paper is a finer line and the lines stay more crisp when blended with water.
Music by Chris Martyn and Geoff Harvey. www.purple-plan...
    Music: www.purple-plan...
    PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 1401b Cold Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
PEN: Lamy Safari with extra fine nib
    INK: Higgins Fountain India
    BRUSH: Sakura Water Brush
REFERENCE IDEAS: come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location.
I rarely draw what I see. I tend to draw what I wanted to see. If I use a reference photo, I prefer to look at it on my phone screen, nothing bigger. I'm not looking for a scene to paint, I'm looking for an idea to paint. Once I begin drawing I'll go for several minutes before I check the reference. Sometimes, once I've stared, I never refer to the reference again.
I am currently unable to overlay an image of the reference photo as I don't have the proper software. As well, I haven't room on my current set up to simply display a photo on the work surface. I do hope to remedy this in the future.
    Thank you for watching!

Wow! Simply incredible how you're able to draw your images in correct perspectives without first sketching in pencil, Peter. Your hand must be well coordinated with your mind, is all I can think of.

love the drama your imagination brings to a simple study drawing....black and white, shadow and light and the perspective of the sketch adds to it too. Love this. :-)

Love the spontaneity and freshness of water/colour application and your expressive, free lines! You work is an inspiration to me (newbie watercolourist) and you are most gracious to share the process. I have also been watching your other videos and work along with them. Thanks so much!!

Hi Dave. I do like the feel of the Lamy. I've got new fountain pen I'll be testing soon. It hold a large amount of ink and is not expensive.

Eerie...great work work and easy to follow along!! Thanks. Mine doesn't look like yours but that is the idea of art. I don't have a fountain pen yet but my micron did the initial trick with several dabs of a mixed grey and some soft splashes of yellow faded into the greys watercolour paints.

Black and white, shadow and light and all the drama this brings along with the depth of perspective - fabulous - reminds me of a back street in Bruges in Belgium. Can you recommend a 'starter' pen and ink for this method. :-)

      @PeterSheelerart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Mogsy. Any fountain or art pen with non-waterproof based ink should work. Lamys are about the best value for the price.

I really loved this video, its just what I have been looking for. I have two Lamy safari that I love writing with. I allways carry them with me. But I never tried drawing with them. This beautiful video made me want to start drawing with my loved Safaris. I will buy the inkconverter and try the ink you used. Is this Higgins ink the one You recommend for theese types of drawingtechnics or is there allso other inks worth trying out? Its a beautiful drawing You made and it makes me both want to start travel and draw at the same time. I will watch all Your videos. Thanks. /Noa

Thank you Noa. Higgins is a good choice because it can blended but is archival.

Now I am very confused. I thought India ink wasn't to be used in fountain pens, only dip nib, due to the heavy pigment sediment clogging up the feed?

Yours turned out really nice unlike mine. LOL. I went 5x7 and with a cheap pilot pen since it's all I have. Not enough ink and because it was larger I needed to put more details in and I didn't. First time with ink so I can't complain. Thanks for the demo!

That Higgins Ink seems to perform really well, soluble enough to wash in some tonal values but not enough to destroy the line work, I like that. I wonder if you could add sparing amounts of spot watercolour over the top once the ink wash has dried?
