  • ** This painting will be for sale on Ebay, Sunday Sept. 11**
    www.ebay.ca/sch...
    This is a Line and Wash demonstration on painting an evening scene with mood.
    Music by Chris Martyn and Geoff Harvey. www.purple-plan...
    MATERIALS:
    PEN: The Uni-ball deluxe micron pen. .05 nib. These pens are extremely waterproof on my papers and can be painted over immediately.
    PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
    Arches 1401b HOT PRESS Paper for this Video.
    My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
    For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
    MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
    Winsor newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
    DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
    A note on Davy's Gray: I rarely use this pigment straight and when using it I usually mix it with each colour used.
    PAINT PALETTE::
    The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
    The paints are poured onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette.
    BRUSH:
    A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush is my current favorite. The bristle were originally white but have become stained.
    I often use inexpensive brushes because several of my techniques are quite abusive.
    Whenever the brush disappears from the screen it is either being wiped off or rinsed.
    REFERENCE IDEAS: come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location.
    I rarely draw what I see. I tend to draw what I wanted to see. If I use a reference photo, I prefer to look at it on my phone screen, nothing bigger. I'm not looking for a scene to paint, I'm looking for an idea to paint. Once I begin drawing I'll go for several minutes before I check the reference. Sometimes, once I've stared, I never refer to the reference again.
    I am currently unable to overlay an image of the reference photo as I don't have the proper software. As well, I haven't room on my current set up to simply display a photo on the work surface. I do hope to remedy this in the future.

    The way you sketch in ink is truly masterful, especially how you do the power lines with such confidence and direction... This isn't something that can be taught, but rather learned through years of repetition and the building of skill...

    Peter, I will be retiring in about 3 weeks and after watching your videos it has rekindled my love for watercolours. I still have a few watercolour sets (some unused) and pads of watercolour paper which will go to good use. I love the way a lot of your colours are actually mixed on the paper to give buildings and trees an unevenness of colour and texture. Thank you for the videos, I find your uncomplicated style to be absolutely inspirational to all, none more so than a humble amateur like myself..

    I like this image - it reminds me of Quentin Blake in a way. I mentioned your thin slivers of paint in a recent video of mine - I see in your description you pour them on paper then stick them in. The Large Pans by W&N have a huge block of paint in a porcelain base and you can cut them with scissors and glue them into a palette if you wish - see my recent product review of them - I thought of you and mentioned your palette during it and it might be a really economical option for urban sketchers to make travel palettes from. Each $10-25 large pan is about 20 times the size of the slips of paint you use so enormous value even compared to tubes.

    Another beautiful painting. Thanks for sharing again, I've learned SO much from you! Just a couple of questions though...you say your "paints are poured onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette"-why do you do it this way, why not just use the palette without the papers? How do you get the papers to stick? Do you let the paint dry before using and if this is the case, why not just buy half pans to begin with?...I'm sorry I don't mean to give the third degree but I'm just learning and have a katrillion questions--but I'll spare you :)...Again thank you so much your time and talent is greatly appreciated!!

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ima. I do it this way so the colors can be easily switched in this small palette. Yes the paint is dried. Just my way and not necessarily the best way. Thanks, Peter

    • @ImaSpeck2011
      @ImaSpeck2011 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for answering so quickly!...doing it that way makes perfect sense as does having a small palette so that we can see it. I, for one, really appreciate that you let us see AND let us know which colors your are using each time you change...Technique was easy to learn but mixing I'm finding particularly challenging so thanks again for all you do (and how well you do it)!

      Thanks....but i'm sorry...I wanted to ask about brush and not pencil. My mistake. The correct question is: Is this brush synthetic?"
