I learned about this when I was 21 years old. A friend gave me the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". I gave it away, bought another copy, and gave that one away too! I wish every woman had that knowledge as young as I did. I am planning on buying another copy and a thermometer so I can start tracking again :)
i love this! my husband have used this method for six years without fail and it’s this same method that allowed us to get pregnant within two cycles of trying to conceive ♥️
i'm not even at the actual point of the video with the info yet, just the disclaimer, but i'm still kinda mad that as a woman i have to care so much abt birth control bc if i get pregnant it's going to be mainly my responsability, my body. i wish there was a way to prevent pregnancies that was both care free and didn't fuck up my body, y'know

It definitely works well for birth control and getting pregnant. We had a "one and done" deal, lol. Everyone told us it would take a few cycles to get pregnant, but the first try was the one!
Yes! That's what we're hoping for when we start trying for a family as well. The nice thing about this method is that when you start TTC, you just reverse the rules (have sex in your fertile window, vs. outside of it) and it becomes a lot easier to conceive. Takes a ton of the guesswork out of it!
I've been charting for a few months now, just for my own information but not as a contraceptive method because I wasn't too sure whether I was doing it right/the signs my body was giving me. This was mainly because my cervical fluid was confusing, e.g. I had "watery" CF in the days leading up to my period. After watching this video, I finally got my hands on the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and it explained the reason why I had such CF - not because I was fertile in the days leading up to my period but because of other changes in my body. Thank you for the video and I also really urge every woman (and share them with your partner) to read the book!
I’ve been on the pill for exactly two years now. It’s a very light pill and I’ve never had any issues with it, but knowing how bad and damaging it is to my body makes me feel really bad and uncomfortable about taking these hormones every single day. I’ve been looking into the Symptothermal Method lately and just ordered the book “Taking Charge of Your Fertility”. I’m really exited to learn more about my cycle and natural birth control, and I honestly can’t wait to finally feel good about it!
Are you by chance taking Norethindrone? It was prescribed to me but I am afraid to take it because of all the side effects that are listed. Have you had any bad side effects?
@@selahdiamond4465 The pill I was taking is called Microgynon 30, but the pill you mentioned might have the same amount of hormones though. Microgynon 30 has 0,15 mg levonorgestrel and 0,03 mg ethinylestradiol. I didn’t have any side effects (ex. gaining weight, acne, larger breasts, headache…) the first year and a half I was taking it, but near the end of my two year journey I felt very foggy in my mind all the time. It felt like my brain had been replaced with a cloud. I never felt like I was really there and it felt like I was dreaming all the time. That’s also one of the main reasons I quit the pill. If I were you, and you’d feel comfortable doing this, I would just try it out for a couple of months to see if it works for you. If you have any side effects that trouble you, just quit. It might take a while for your body to adjust to the pill and/or to quitting, so give yourself some time. If you do not feel comfortable with it though, just don’t take it. I don’t know the reasons for you taking it, but there might be other options if you do not feel comfortable with this one :)
I’m about to have my hormone implant removed and planning to use FAM as my method of birth control. In fact, I paused the video and bought Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I’m pretty excited to work this into my life!

I started this journey late in July of 2022 aka this year. I'm 33 years old with a plethora of health problems. I hated the weight gain and especially the anxiety and depression. I didn't want to pay for more medication. So I took the last week of my Seasonique and now I am here. I had a mental breakdown and my husband freaked out. Lol Thank goodness he is such a sweetheart and he thinks that more birth control needs to fall on the males as well as females. And more options that men can take or do to there bodies just like we go through. All of it is alot...taking medication.....IUDs and pain. Periods....the list goes on. Well. I was going to try spermicide but we both are so sensetive but ill keep it on hand anyhow. I'm going to figure this out without having to pay 400 dollars for the daisy.
I actually didn't know this had a name! I've been doing the calendar method since like 2016 or so and its how I got pregnant with my son. He was completely planned and I was able to get pregnant during the cycle I wanted. Fortunately, my cycle is usually pretty regular so it works really well for me. I had the Mirena IUD and it worked extremely well when I needed hormonal bc. I used to have horrible cramps and an ovarian cyst but now that my hormones are regulated I no longer need hormonal bc.
I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I'd pay a decent amount of attention to your cervical fluid in addition to the calendar method if you want a good bit more accuracy, but as long as you've found something that you enjoy and like and works for you, that's what matters. :)
I also get reoccurring ovarian cysts. I am wondering what helped you? Does the tracking method really work for contraception? My doctor recommended taking birth control but I’m afraid it would have a negative impact on my ovarian cysts I got extra menstrual bleeding.

So happy to help! Definitely read the book from cover to cover before you begin, and chart your cycle for at least 3-6 cycles before you truly rely 100% on it. But it's amazing!
I'm currently trying to get mine removed then start NFP. How long did it take you to feel more like yourself after you had your's removed? I know everyone is different but it will give me more of an idea.
Totally the worst one! I chose that because in college I was lazy and a ho, and it made me an insane psycho bitch, emotionally unstable, and develop a horrific eating disorder. I didn't associate these things to the HBC until I got off of it and felt totally normal. Then I got in a serious relationship and decided to get on the pill so we could stop using condoms. On the pill, I had panic attacks and also gained around 80 pounds. About two years later, I have now been off the pill since May and using this method!!! It rocks! INSANE how much more your hormones regulate than you think.
I used the sympto-thermal method as a backup for condoms when I found out that I couldn't handle hormonal birth control. It took me a while to become okay with just using condoms (because we're always wrongly told about how unreliable they are) so I used the method to know when to avoid sex all together. I stopped after about a year but it gave me a really great insight to what different symptoms mean. I think the most helpful thing was being able to use the temperature drop off as an indicator that I was about to get my period. I will still sometimes crack out the thermometer if my period is a couple of days late because I know that if my bbt drops below 36°c, I have nothing to worry about.
Yes! Seeing the temperature drop is HUGE when you're about to get your period. I've planned many an-outfit specifically with that temperature drop in mind haha.
And for birth control, I use the pill at the moment. It's called Orsythia and I've come across no side effects to date, but am definitely curious about natural methods as well.
This happened to me!! my gyn was like i dont do the copper iud for young girls and i was like ... okay? and left still on hormonal birth control. now im ready to do FAM. watching youtube videos and going to read the book and make this month my last month on hormonal BC.
I use an app that tells me the week I’m ovulating and I just use condoms that week with my husband. I’ve been doing this for four years and it definitely works
I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I'd encourage you to keep an eye out for cervical fluid changes as well though. Sometimes ovulation occurs earlier or later than expected, and if you keep an eye out for those changes, it an give you a better idea of when it's actually happening.

I had a baby in 2021 at 18. 6 weeks ppd I was put on hormonal bc. My body never got a chance to level out my hormones naturally, my son is 18 months now and I rely so heavily on the hormones from my bc otherwise I get migraines any time my hormone levels change. It's such a trapped feeling, I absolutely don't want to be pregnant again but I also hate relying on my bc because my body can't stabilize hormones by itself.
Tried to grab this book on Audible to realize it’s not in that library…still picked it up at my local half price books. I’ll be switching to FAM in less than two weeks after 10 + years on birth control!
Lots of great info! Tho, a little much for me personally because I’m so inconsistent and never knew when my periods showed up - always a surprise. So at the moment I have an IUD and no issues, just the cramps I never got. Lol. But the method you’re talking is something to look into and research - so it is very much appreciated.
Definitely! If you're somebody who has a hard time doing something consistently every day, this method is probably not for you. It's like taking a birth control pill, in the way that it has to be done diligently, without forgetting about it. That IUD would have been my go-to method if it worked out at the time!
Caty Culp plus, it’s just crazy when you never know when it’s gonna show up - and so inconsistently. 25 days, 31 days, 29, 25, 32... so difficult! I got tired of guessing! Plus, being 41, I’m kinda tired of having it in general! Lol. 30 yrs of it is enough for me. Haha. Plus, when my boyfriend gets gone from deployment I don’t have to play a guessing game with it because I just don’t get it. And it’s there for 4 more years if needed.
Totally! They absolutely have their place, and I wish they would have worked out for me at the time! I'm really happy with FAM right now though, especially since we're talking about starting a family in the next few years. I feel like if I got an IUD, I'd want the IUD in there for as long as possible, really get the mileage out of them haha, so it doesn't make as much sense right now.
Caty Culp - definitely! FAM definitely makes the best sense when trying to have kids and starting a family. And I’ll still keep it in mind in case anything changes within the year when my boyfriend is back....never know!

I actually use the copper IUD and I personally loooooove how it works with my body and horomones, I will say that it has made my cramping much more painful so if someone already has painful cramping it won't be a good option. But I love this video and its so interesting to hear the science behind natural birth control. I'll have to pick up that book you recommended just to know more about my body, I live in Utah and since we are a majority religious state we are taught abstinence so I was told the same thing you were about being able to get pregnant any day of the month. Yeah, the copper IUD was my first choice when I was looking into non-hormonal birth control options! Unfortunately, my garbage doctor at the time said it wouldn't work for me specifically because I haven't had kids before/I was small/it's painful to insert/makes periods awful/etc... Really, she just wasn't a very good doctor, because I know now that the majority of those issues aren't true issues and/or are totally dependent on the person. But now I'm at a place in my life where we're talking more seriously about starting a family in the next few years, and if I were to try to get the IUD now, I feel like I wouldn't get the mileage out of it that I would want haha. Perhaps after we're done having kids! I'm glad you've found something that works so well for you!

This was great info! I currently use the nexplanon and pull out. I love it, hate having to use birth control but we are not in a place where we want children. I don’t want to take any chances and I know I wouldn’t be the best at something like this. I plan to do one more cycle of nexplanon then the pill then when we get to a point where getting pregnant wouldn’t be the end of the world (and I’m older and more responsible) then doing a method like this.

First 4 years it was ok but I would like to stop using them because I feel it changes me as a person. Your metod seems the right thing for me. One thing worries me a lot. When woman stops using hormonal pills, her cycle could be crazy for half a year sometimes over a year, is this issue coverd in that book? What was your experience when you stopped using pills? Hey Denisa! I'm SO happy this video was helpful for you! And yes, that specific issue is covered very well in the book, specifically on page 74 and the preceding pages, where you can learn how to implement the hormone changes that you'll likely experience coming off the pill. For me personally, I was on the pill for about 2 years, and then the Nuvaring for another 2-3 years. When I finally decided to go off both, I found that my period came back and my cycles returned to normal within about 2-3 months, which is pretty quick compared to many people. Every cycle is different, and every body is different, so just pay as close attention as you can to the changes in your body. ❤️
I totally love the book, I used it for pregnancy and was so knowledgeable. But since I can’t use most hormones due to blood clot condition and I’ve been pro free of hormones ever since I got older and I don’t like any hormones for me. I also can’t have iud one got embedded and this time around thought I would have a better outcome with iud and nope displaced and embedded on the right side so getting it removed next week. So now I’m relearning and rereading the book now for FAM to follow the right rules. Also I have natural cycle and two more apps just for reference.

I was wondering does being too cold or too hot at night affect the temperature? like my boyfriend really wants to have so many blankets that I wake up thirsty, have nightmares about my dry throat, get sweaty... and of course there's those times where it gets colder and you didn't add blankets and you're freezing all night

So glad you loved it Julianne! I actually never used Lady Comp. BUT LC is what introduced me to this entire world of fertility awareness in the first place. I had to condense this story down due to timing, but when I originally was told the IUD wouldn't work for me, I went home and researched even more, hoping to find other non-hormonal options that were effective. Through that research, I stumbled across Lady Comp, and I was amazed that just taking your temperature every day could help this little device tell you if you could have unprotected sex or not. But I didn't end up getting it because of the huge price tag (at the time, it was like $400-500, and I just couldn't swing that). So instead, I did more research on _how_ Lady Comp worked, which brought me to the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, which then basically gave me the guidelines for this video, which I've been using for a long time now. Hope that makes sense!
It seems like setting your alarm for 6:30 every day would interrupt your REM cycle. Is it less accurate to just take your temp whenever you wake up whether it's 6, 7, 8 or 9, etc?
Actually, you run into the issue when you sleep longer that your BBT rises a bit more than it would normally, so you want to take your temperature at as close to the same time every day as you can. The way I get around this is that the alarm clock app I use (Sleep Cycle) is designed to wake me up in a 30-minute window in my lightest phase of sleep within that window. It feels movements in the bed, which can help determine how "awake" I am, so it's never interrupting true, deep sleep. There are some days where measuring temperature doesn't happen, too. If I'm out super late one night, or if I've been drinking, or if I'm sick, all of those things can alter my waking temperature (rising it higher than it normally would be). So if any of those things have happened, there are just some days where I simply ignore my alarm and don't measure. These moments are few and far between, but they _do_ happen. That's why it's important to measure as much as possible, so that way there are still patterns in your chart that can be observed and interpreted accurately. A chart that only has 5 temps measured on it isn't a chart that you should rely on for this method.

Hey! So for thermometers, it really depends on how much you're willing to invest. I've been using TempDrop as of late and I absolutely LOVE it. You wear it under your armpit all night long and it automatically logs your basal body temp that night without having to wake up to take your temperature, so it's really great if you do shift work or your sleep is interrupted a lot. Plus it's lovely not having to wake up to an alarm every day to take my temperature. However, it's pricy ($160 minimum), so if you're on the fence about this method at all, it might be too much of an investment, in which case the thermometer linked in the description is great. (You can check out TempDrop here though, in case you want to check it out and read more about it: www.temp-drop.com/) As for Daysy, I think it's pretty overpriced for something you can do yourself. It's basically a combination of a regular basal body thermometer and Natural Cycles, and that combo is way, way cheaper.

The context it was used in refers to this specific video, not the entire channel. However, in extreme circumstances, I believe entire channels have been demonetized in the past if repeated "edgy" content is uploaded. So both options are possible for the typical youtuber, it just depends on what videos they upload.
...6 days in a typical cycle when a *woman* can get pregnant. Men are fertile all day every day and the only reason that a woman is considered fertile more days than just one in the cycle (the day of ovulation), is because sperm can survive up to 5 days in healthy cervical fluid
Does anyone use the iPhone built in app for recording all these things? I have been tracking things on it but I still use pills… now I am decided to stop the pills because is just been horrible….
I use a method like this when planning for pregnancy. I’ve had 2 successful pregnancies from it. Otherwise, I’m aware of when I’m fertile and use condoms.
I don't have personal experience with Daisy, but I've heard good things! I like NC because the interface is really great. It's easy for me to look at it and immediately know generally when my fertile phase is. I like to use other apps to corroborate data with NC, but I like it on its own as well. I feel like using both NC and Daisy would be kind of pointless though, since they both work extremely similarly.

The first day of red bleeding is typically considered the start of your menstrual cycle. Some people can have a day or two of light spotting before red bleeding begins, but those days don't usually count as the start of your cycle.
Anyone have insight on tracking BBT if you work night shifts? Some days I wake up at 8AM or maybe earlier or later. However if I have to work night shift, I wake up in the afternoon. Will tracking my BBT upon waking be inaccurate?
Yeah, you'll struggle if you don't have a consistent schedule. I highly recommend checking out the TempDrop if your schedule is inconsistent! It's a wearable thermometer, a bit pricy, but you don't have to wake up at the same time every day for accurate results. I've been using it a couple years now and it makes it super easy and a lot nicer for tracking!
You can still use this method if you're irregular, but you have to be even more diligent about tracking all your fertility signs before completely relying on this method. There's an entire section of the book that dives into irregular cycles and I highly recommend checking out if you're still interested. :)

But after my almost 8 year relationship ended, I felt like I had no choice but to get back on (plus it helps regulate me) but with other health issues I can't even be back on the nuvaring that i prefer. Natural birth control for me is spending time with my sister. Every time I see her she baffles and repulses me so completely that the idea of having sex with a woman makes my gag-reflex go in over-drive
I'm a big supporter of science and evidence-based medicine, which unfortunately doesn't line up well with the majority of homeopathic practices. However, I'm also of the opinion that _many_ doctors and health professionals are over eager to prescribe really powerful/harsh medicines to treat the symptoms of many illnesses, without caring too much about getting to the root cause of a problem. I think, too often, the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and nutrition are overlooked in favor of just throwing pills at an individual, which I also don't support. So, there's definitely a balancing act here.
Well, if you're on hormonal birth control, the act of actually ovulating is suppressed, so you likely won't get the temperature shifts that you would normally if you weren't on hormonal birth control. That being said, if you're hoping to transition off of hormonal BC at any point in the near-ish future, there's definitely still value in temping just for the habit that it instills in you. Waking up daily to take your temperature first thing in the morning takes practice for a lot of women, and I think doing that when you're still on BC gives you a ton of practice without the consequences of messing it up.
Caty Culp thanks so much for responding! Yes I have been on HORMONAL BC for about 8 years and recently in the last 3 I have really wanted to stop but I felt locked in like I had no other option. Now my husband and I really want me off and eventually in the next year we will try to conceive! I started doing some serious research and stumbled upon your channel and after watching this video I bought the book Taking Charge of your Fertility! And honestly I’m only on chapter 5 but I am BEYOND! Thankful that you recommended this book! I’m learning sooooo much and I’m so excited to be really informed about FAM that I will feel confident moving forward in the next phase of getting off HBC. This book is so awesome! I wish and hope more women will find out about this book because I’m 28 and never in my life was taught FAM! When I first read TCOYF, I was first amazed that I learned so much, and then part of me felt almost angry too, because I felt lied to my whole life about my body and hormones and how things naturally work For me, FAM was perfect because I was in (and still am in) a long term, serious, monogamous relationship with someone who I eventually intend to have children with. The beauty of FAM, in my opinion, is that you can use it to navigate your fertility window and avoid pregnancy by doing so, but then when you're ready to actually conceive, you just flip the "rules" of FAM and suddenly you're TTC without needing to adjust anything, or worry about transitioning off BC or anything like that. I think if you're planning on TTC in the next year or so, then FAM is the perfect option for you. By starting to take your temps now, that will help get you in the habit of doing so, and then you can start to transition off BC and basically be prepared. I would still recommend using a backup method (like condoms) for a good few cycles, especially because BC hormones can make cycles a little wonky for a bit. For sure! When we start trying to start a family, the nice thing about this method is that I can just reverse the rules, and hopefully get pregnant asap. The book is seriously amazing!
i also use the Ava bracelet its a little expensive but i don't have to to my BBT in the mornings which was worth it for me. Let me know if you look into it .
I've heard of it before! I have to look more into it. I currently use the Wink thermometer by Kindara (I think I got it like 3-4 years ago, back when it was brand new) and I've loved it ever since. I know thermometers don't last forever though, so I'm always keeping an eye out for a new one.
Hey thanks for looking out! It also looks like you may not get the most accurate BBT measurements with Ava, as it's worn on the wrist and not close to your actual body. It says on their site that it's a good complement for FABM, but shouldn't be relied upon for that.

I learned about this when I was 21 years old. A friend gave me the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". I gave it away, bought another copy, and gave that one away too! I wish every woman had that knowledge as young as I did. I am planning on buying another copy and a thermometer so I can start tracking again :)

It definitely works well for birth control and getting pregnant. We had a "one and done" deal, lol. Everyone told us it would take a few cycles to get pregnant, but the first try was the one!
Yes! That's what we're hoping for when we start trying for a family as well. The nice thing about this method is that when you start TTC, you just reverse the rules (have sex in your fertile window, vs. outside of it) and it becomes a lot easier to conceive. Takes a ton of the guesswork out of it!

I've been charting for a few months now, just for my own information but not as a contraceptive method because I wasn't too sure whether I was doing it right/the signs my body was giving me. This was mainly because my cervical fluid was confusing, e.g. I had "watery" CF in the days leading up to my period. After watching this video, I finally got my hands on the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and it explained the reason why I had such CF - not because I was fertile in the days leading up to my period but because of other changes in my body. Thank you for the video and I also really urge every woman (and share them with your partner) to read the book!
I’ve been on the pill for exactly two years now. It’s a very light pill and I’ve never had any issues with it, but knowing how bad and damaging it is to my body makes me feel really bad and uncomfortable about taking these hormones every single day. I’ve been looking into the Symptothermal Method lately and just ordered the book “Taking Charge of Your Fertility”. I’m really exited to learn more about my cycle and natural birth control, and I honestly can’t wait to finally feel good about it!

@@selahdiamond4465 The pill I was taking is called Microgynon 30, but the pill you mentioned might have the same amount of hormones though. Microgynon 30 has 0,15 mg levonorgestrel and 0,03 mg ethinylestradiol. I didn’t have any side effects (ex. gaining weight, acne, larger breasts, headache…) the first year and a half I was taking it, but near the end of my two year journey I felt very foggy in my mind all the time. It felt like my brain had been replaced with a cloud. I never felt like I was really there and it felt like I was dreaming all the time. That’s also one of the main reasons I quit the pill.
If I were you, and you’d feel comfortable doing this, I would just try it out for a couple of months to see if it works for you. If you have any side effects that trouble you, just quit. It might take a while for your body to adjust to the pill and/or to quitting, so give yourself some time. If you do not feel comfortable with it though, just don’t take it. I don’t know the reasons for you taking it, but there might be other options if you do not feel comfortable with this one :)

I started this journey late in July of 2022 aka this year. I'm 33 years old with a plethora of health problems. I hated the weight gain and especially the anxiety and depression. I didn't want to pay for more medication. So I took the last week of my Seasonique and now I am here. I had a mental breakdown and my husband freaked out. Lol Thank goodness he is such a sweetheart and he thinks that more birth control needs to fall on the males as well as females. And more options that men can take or do to there bodies just like we go through. All of it is alot...taking medication.....IUDs and pain. Periods....the list goes on.
Well. I was going to try spermicide but we both are so sensetive but ill keep it on hand anyhow.
I'm going to figure this out without having to pay 400 dollars for the daisy.
I actually didn't know this had a name! I've been doing the calendar method since like 2016 or so and its how I got pregnant with my son. He was completely planned and I was able to get pregnant during the cycle I wanted. Fortunately, my cycle is usually pretty regular so it works really well for me. I had the Mirena IUD and it worked extremely well when I needed hormonal bc. I used to have horrible cramps and an ovarian cyst but now that my hormones are regulated I no longer need hormonal bc.
I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I'd pay a decent amount of attention to your cervical fluid in addition to the calendar method if you want a good bit more accuracy, but as long as you've found something that you enjoy and like and works for you, that's what matters. :)
I also get reoccurring ovarian cysts. I am wondering what helped you? Does the tracking method really work for contraception? My doctor recommended taking birth control but I’m afraid it would have a negative impact on my ovarian cysts I got extra menstrual bleeding.

So happy to help! Definitely read the book from cover to cover before you begin, and chart your cycle for at least 3-6 cycles before you truly rely 100% on it. But it's amazing!

Totally the worst one! I chose that because in college I was lazy and a ho, and it made me an insane psycho bitch, emotionally unstable, and develop a horrific eating disorder. I didn't associate these things to the HBC until I got off of it and felt totally normal. Then I got in a serious relationship and decided to get on the pill so we could stop using condoms. On the pill, I had panic attacks and also gained around 80 pounds. About two years later, I have now been off the pill since May and using this method!!! It rocks! INSANE how much more your hormones regulate than you think.
I used the sympto-thermal method as a backup for condoms when I found out that I couldn't handle hormonal birth control.
It took me a while to become okay with just using condoms (because we're always wrongly told about how unreliable they are) so I used the method to know when to avoid sex all together.
I stopped after about a year but it gave me a really great insight to what different symptoms mean. I think the most helpful thing was being able to use the temperature drop off as an indicator that I was about to get my period. I will still sometimes crack out the thermometer if my period is a couple of days late because I know that if my bbt drops below 36°c, I have nothing to worry about.
Yes! Seeing the temperature drop is HUGE when you're about to get your period. I've planned many an-outfit specifically with that temperature drop in mind haha.
What does that temperature drop mean?
Such amazing information that women need to be taught. Like why isn't this taught in every sex ed?!
And for birth control, I use the pill at the moment. It's called Orsythia and I've come across no side effects to date, but am definitely curious about natural methods as well.

This happened to me!! my gyn was like i dont do the copper iud for young girls and i was like ... okay? and left still on hormonal birth control. now im ready to do FAM. watching youtube videos and going to read the book and make this month my last month on hormonal BC.
I use an app that tells me the week I’m ovulating and I just use condoms that week with my husband. I’ve been doing this for four years and it definitely works
I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I'd encourage you to keep an eye out for cervical fluid changes as well though. Sometimes ovulation occurs earlier or later than expected, and if you keep an eye out for those changes, it an give you a better idea of when it's actually happening.

I had a baby in 2021 at 18. 6 weeks ppd I was put on hormonal bc. My body never got a chance to level out my hormones naturally, my son is 18 months now and I rely so heavily on the hormones from my bc otherwise I get migraines any time my hormone levels change. It's such a trapped feeling, I absolutely don't want to be pregnant again but I also hate relying on my bc because my body can't stabilize hormones by itself.
Tried to grab this book on Audible to realize it’s not in that library…still picked it up at my local half price books. I’ll be switching to FAM in less than two weeks after 10 + years on birth control!

Lots of great info! Tho, a little much for me personally because I’m so inconsistent and never knew when my periods showed up - always a surprise. So at the moment I have an IUD and no issues, just the cramps I never got. Lol. But the method you’re talking is something to look into and research - so it is very much appreciated.
Definitely! If you're somebody who has a hard time doing something consistently every day, this method is probably not for you. It's like taking a birth control pill, in the way that it has to be done diligently, without forgetting about it. That IUD would have been my go-to method if it worked out at the time!
Caty Culp plus, it’s just crazy when you never know when it’s gonna show up - and so inconsistently. 25 days, 31 days, 29, 25, 32... so difficult! I got tired of guessing! Plus, being 41, I’m kinda tired of having it in general! Lol. 30 yrs of it is enough for me. Haha. Plus, when my boyfriend gets gone from deployment I don’t have to play a guessing game with it because I just don’t get it. And it’s there for 4 more years if needed.
Totally! They absolutely have their place, and I wish they would have worked out for me at the time! I'm really happy with FAM right now though, especially since we're talking about starting a family in the next few years. I feel like if I got an IUD, I'd want the IUD in there for as long as possible, really get the mileage out of them haha, so it doesn't make as much sense right now.

I actually use the copper IUD and I personally loooooove how it works with my body and horomones, I will say that it has made my cramping much more painful so if someone already has painful cramping it won't be a good option. But I love this video and its so interesting to hear the science behind natural birth control. I'll have to pick up that book you recommended just to know more about my body, I live in Utah and since we are a majority religious state we are taught abstinence so I was told the same thing you were about being able to get pregnant any day of the month. Yeah, the copper IUD was my first choice when I was looking into non-hormonal birth control options! Unfortunately, my garbage doctor at the time said it wouldn't work for me specifically because I haven't had kids before/I was small/it's painful to insert/makes periods awful/etc... Really, she just wasn't a very good doctor, because I know now that the majority of those issues aren't true issues and/or are totally dependent on the person. But now I'm at a place in my life where we're talking more seriously about starting a family in the next few years, and if I were to try to get the IUD now, I feel like I wouldn't get the mileage out of it that I would want haha. Perhaps after we're done having kids! I'm glad you've found something that works so well for you!

This was great info! I currently use the nexplanon and pull out. I love it, hate having to use birth control but we are not in a place where we want children. I don’t want to take any chances and I know I wouldn’t be the best at something like this. I plan to do one more cycle of nexplanon then the pill then when we get to a point where getting pregnant wouldn’t be the end of the world (and I’m older and more responsible) then doing a method like this.

First 4 years it was ok but I would like to stop using them because I feel it changes me as a person. Your metod seems the right thing for me. One thing worries me a lot. When woman stops using hormonal pills, her cycle could be crazy for half a year sometimes over a year, is this issue coverd in that book? What was your experience when you stopped using pills? Hey Denisa! I'm SO happy this video was helpful for you! And yes, that specific issue is covered very well in the book, specifically on page 74 and the preceding pages, where you can learn how to implement the hormone changes that you'll likely experience coming off the pill. For me personally, I was on the pill for about 2 years, and then the Nuvaring for another 2-3 years. When I finally decided to go off both, I found that my period came back and my cycles returned to normal within about 2-3 months, which is pretty quick compared to many people. Every cycle is different, and every body is different, so just pay as close attention as you can to the changes in your body. ❤️

I totally love the book, I used it for pregnancy and was so knowledgeable. But since I can’t use most hormones due to blood clot condition and I’ve been pro free of hormones ever since I got older and I don’t like any hormones for me. I also can’t have iud one got embedded and this time around thought I would have a better outcome with iud and nope displaced and embedded on the right side so getting it removed next week. So now I’m relearning and rereading the book now for FAM to follow the right rules. Also I have natural cycle and two more apps just for reference.

So glad you loved it Julianne! I actually never used Lady Comp. BUT LC is what introduced me to this entire world of fertility awareness in the first place. I had to condense this story down due to timing, but when I originally was told the IUD wouldn't work for me, I went home and researched even more, hoping to find other non-hormonal options that were effective. Through that research, I stumbled across Lady Comp, and I was amazed that just taking your temperature every day could help this little device tell you if you could have unprotected sex or not. But I didn't end up getting it because of the huge price tag (at the time, it was like $400-500, and I just couldn't swing that). So instead, I did more research on _how_ Lady Comp worked, which brought me to the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, which then basically gave me the guidelines for this video, which I've been using for a long time now. Hope that makes sense!

It seems like setting your alarm for 6:30 every day would interrupt your REM cycle. Is it less accurate to just take your temp whenever you wake up whether it's 6, 7, 8 or 9, etc?
Actually, you run into the issue when you sleep longer that your BBT rises a bit more than it would normally, so you want to take your temperature at as close to the same time every day as you can. The way I get around this is that the alarm clock app I use (Sleep Cycle) is designed to wake me up in a 30-minute window in my lightest phase of sleep within that window. It feels movements in the bed, which can help determine how "awake" I am, so it's never interrupting true, deep sleep.
There are some days where measuring temperature doesn't happen, too. If I'm out super late one night, or if I've been drinking, or if I'm sick, all of those things can alter my waking temperature (rising it higher than it normally would be). So if any of those things have happened, there are just some days where I simply ignore my alarm and don't measure. These moments are few and far between, but they _do_ happen. That's why it's important to measure as much as possible, so that way there are still patterns in your chart that can be observed and interpreted accurately. A chart that only has 5 temps measured on it isn't a chart that you should rely on for this method.

Hey so, I know this was a year ago, but I’ve been rewatching this video because I’m finally going to start FAM (symptothermal method) I got the book last year, but I wasn’t interested in starting it at the time. I just started reading it and I can’t wait to finish. I was just wondering if you still use/recommend the thermometer you linked? I also wanted to ask if you heard of the Daysy, if so, what are your thoughts?
Hey! So for thermometers, it really depends on how much you're willing to invest. I've been using TempDrop as of late and I absolutely LOVE it. You wear it under your armpit all night long and it automatically logs your basal body temp that night without having to wake up to take your temperature, so it's really great if you do shift work or your sleep is interrupted a lot. Plus it's lovely not having to wake up to an alarm every day to take my temperature. However, it's pricy ($160 minimum), so if you're on the fence about this method at all, it might be too much of an investment, in which case the thermometer linked in the description is great. (You can check out TempDrop here though, in case you want to check it out and read more about it: www.temp-drop.com/)
As for Daysy, I think it's pretty overpriced for something you can do yourself. It's basically a combination of a regular basal body thermometer and Natural Cycles, and that combo is way, way cheaper.

The context it was used in refers to this specific video, not the entire channel. However, in extreme circumstances, I believe entire channels have been demonetized in the past if repeated "edgy" content is uploaded. So both options are possible for the typical youtuber, it just depends on what videos they upload.

...6 days in a typical cycle when a *woman* can get pregnant. Men are fertile all day every day and the only reason that a woman is considered fertile more days than just one in the cycle (the day of ovulation), is because sperm can survive up to 5 days in healthy cervical fluid

I use a method like this when planning for pregnancy. I’ve had 2 successful pregnancies from it. Otherwise, I’m aware of when I’m fertile and use condoms.

I don't have personal experience with Daisy, but I've heard good things! I like NC because the interface is really great. I feel like using both NC and Daisy would be kind of pointless though, since they both work extremely similarly.

If you don't want to depend on a thermometer depend on contraceptive pills which cause cancer and blood clots instead you still have to take

Anyone have insight on tracking BBT if you work night shifts? Some days I wake up at 8AM or maybe earlier or later. However if I have to work night shift, I wake up in the afternoon. Will tracking my BBT upon waking be inaccurate?
Yeah, you'll struggle if you don't have a consistent schedule. I highly recommend checking out the TempDrop if your schedule is inconsistent! It's a wearable thermometer, a bit pricy, but you don't have to wake up at the same time every day for accurate results. I've been using it a couple years now and it makes it super easy and a lot nicer for tracking!
You've really opened my eyes, but I'm someone who is extremely irregular. So idk if something like this would work for me.
You can still use this method if you're irregular, but you have to be even more diligent about tracking all your fertility signs before completely relying on this method. There's an entire section of the book that dives into irregular cycles and I highly recommend checking out if you're still interested. :)

But after my almost 8 year relationship ended, I felt like I had no choice but to get back on (plus it helps regulate me) but with other health issues I can't even be back on the nuvaring that i prefer. So I'm just over putting that extra nonsense in my body.

I'm a big supporter of science and evidence-based medicine, which unfortunately doesn't line up well with the majority of homeopathic practices. However, I'm also of the opinion that _many_ doctors and health professionals are over eager to prescribe really powerful/harsh medicines to treat the symptoms of many illnesses, without caring too much about getting to the root cause of a problem. I think, too often, the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and nutrition are overlooked in favor of just throwing pills at an individual, which I also don't support. So, there's definitely a balancing act here.

Well, if you're on hormonal birth control, the act of actually ovulating is suppressed, so you likely won't get the temperature shifts that you would normally if you weren't on hormonal birth control. That being said, if you're hoping to transition off of hormonal BC at any point in the near-ish future, there's definitely still value in temping just for the habit that it instills in you. Waking up daily to take your temperature first thing in the morning takes practice for a lot of women, and I think doing that when you're still on BC gives you a ton of practice without the consequences of messing it up.
Caty Culp thanks so much for responding! Yes I have been on HORMONAL BC for about 8 years and recently in the last 3 I have really wanted to stop but I felt locked in like I had no other option. Now my husband and I really want me off and eventually in the next year we will try to conceive! I started doing some serious research and stumbled upon your channel and after watching this video I bought the book Taking Charge of your Fertility! And honestly I’m only on chapter 5 but I am BEYOND! Thankful that you recommended this book! I’m learning sooooo much and I’m so excited to be really informed about FAM that I will feel confident moving forward in the next phase of getting off HBC. This book is so awesome! I wish and hope more women will find out about this book because I’m 28 and never in my life was taught FAM! When I first read TCOYF, I was first amazed that I learned so much, and then part of me felt almost angry too, because I felt lied to my whole life about my body and hormones and how things naturally work For me, FAM was perfect because I was in (and still am in) a long term, serious, monogamous relationship with someone who I eventually intend to have children with. The beauty of FAM, in my opinion, is that you can use it to navigate your fertility window and avoid pregnancy by doing so, but then when you're ready to actually conceive, you just flip the "rules" of FAM and suddenly you're TTC without needing to adjust anything, or worry about transitioning off BC or anything like that. I think if you're planning on TTC in the next year or so, then FAM is the perfect option for you. By starting to take your temps now, that will help get you in the habit of doing so, and then you can start to transition off BC and basically be prepared. I would still recommend using a backup method (like condoms) for a good few cycles, especially because BC hormones can make cycles a little wonky for a bit. If you have any more questions, just give me a shout! :)

For sure! When we start trying to start a family, the nice thing about this method is that I can just reverse the rules, and hopefully get pregnant asap. The book is seriously amazing!

I've heard of it before! I have to look more into it. I currently use the Wink thermometer by Kindara (I think I got it like 3-4 years ago, back when it was brand new) and I've loved it ever since. I know thermometers don't last forever though, so I'm always keeping an eye out for a new one.
Hey thanks for looking out! It also looks like you may not get the most accurate BBT measurements with Ava, as it's worn on the wrist and not close to your actual body. It says on their site that it's a good complement for FABM, but shouldn't be relied upon for that.
