My transfer case just took a shit on me last night a friend told me about the 242HD but good to know about the 242D just in case I can't find a 242HD. keep up the good work man. looks like I might have to do the drive shafts with it if I go the 242D route
I hear that from everyone who has done this swap "I want to drive in 2WD on the street, not all-wheel drive. Driving in AWD instead of 2WD uses more gas." But that is ignorant. The 247 TC is normally in 2WD mode and engages the front axle only when there is slippage (i.e. the rear wheels are turning faster than the front wheels.) Therefore, there is no extra resistance when on dry pavement with the 247 compared to 2WD mode of the 242/HD. Now, if you want to swap in the 242/HD to do burnouts, that's cool. But if you are looking to increase MPG, that's a fools errand, and a lot of work for nothing. Good tip on the dash light plug, though.
Nope. I'm doing this to mine as I want to be more in control of 4WD. I do not want the T-case to decide for me. When I want 4x4 I want to know it's fully engaged. That's why I'm doing it. Similar to the wrangler. I have no desire to do burnouts.
Your right I forgot to mention another reason why I did it is because in the rain sometimes my back tires spin when pulling out and I didn’t like the idea of it engaging the front axel with wheel speed and putting more pressure on the front Dana 30.
Yes I have also come to that conclusion and I started thinking 🤔🤔🤔 that if we change out the cv axle and hub to a xj front axle then you can look out the axles and be free .
Not always the case. There are variations of the 242 that came in v8 models. The one in this video came from a Durango not a jeep. It will naturally have the larger input shaft that came with the v8 jeeps that came with a 242 due to what it came out of. Simple Google searches will net you this information. Also would like to quote my sources ( me and my experience working in a transmission, differential, transfer case rebuild shop for 4 years and specialized in Jeeps and Toyotas).
I want to swap transfer cases from a 4.0L 2002 W7 GC with Select Drive to a 4.7L 2004 W7 GC with Quadra Trac. Is it possible to do this swap from one to the other? I have both years, so no junkyard is needed. Quadra Trac makes the gas mile the pits and a royal pain turning sharp corners.
4hi only engages the front wheels in the event there is a loss of traction in the rear wheels. Low-lock locks the transfer case 1:1 for the quadra drive. 4lo is Great going down steep rocked-out slopes.
247я раздатка подает на переднюю ось не большое усилие всегда. Как и 249. Для wj 242 раздатка хорошая когда меняешь мосты на более тяжелые - Patrol или dana 60
bud..i dont know what to tell you, but the 247 doesn't engage, at all until there is slippage of any kind, and its a WJ, esp with the 4,7l you're not going to get good gas mileage. your axle gearing affects it a lot more then the case and i can tell you, unless you're putting 40s on it, you're not gonna break a 247. the 247 is rated at 1800 standard 242 is only 1486, and the HD is only rated at 2086. which is only 280lbs more. not to mention, the HD really only came on hummers and a select few WJs.
I’m not sure if it’s longer it might be looking at research online I did not cut mine down I swapped it into the 42RE transmission without modification.

First Timer here! Nice video. I didn’t know about that Durango swap!
Thanks 😊
I'm doing this to mine. Just picked up an 04 with the H.O. and about to make this happen with a 6.5" lift.
That’s gonna be a nice setup thanks for watching!
@@rockyridgetv1601 also doing the swap from 247 to 242. Been wanting to do it and finally going to do it.
This is fantastic... I wish I could do it to my Commander

The biggest issue is the clutches in the 247 wear out leaving the front output useless.
@@MegaMarclar They do? Mine is at over 215K and they haven't worn out.
You missed a lot of things from the NP247 to the NP242 input shaft is shorter in the 242 the tail shafts are differ so are the arms for the linkage.

4 lo is great for crawling I really like the gear ratio for crawling speeds. Thanks for watching!

👍
How did you do the wiring
The wiring is already there it’s plugged into a dummy plug on the old transfer case you just simply unplug it and plug it into the new one.

I blew a 247 in my 4.0 wj on 6 inch lift and 35s
I have a question, is the input shaft on the 242d is shorter or long as the 242hd?
I’m not sure if it’s longer it might be looking at research online I did not cut mine down I swapped it into the 42RE transmission without modification.
Did you have to change out the input shafts
No I did not it bolted right up.
I just removed the front shaft, boom 2 wheel
ive come across 247s won't transfer power to the back unless the front drive shaft is on
Yeah, you can't do that with a Commander... or grande cherokee with the QII
