Relic Hunt With My First MINELAB Metal Detector (Vanquish 440)

- In this metal detecting episode I will show you a relic hunt with a Minelab Vanquish 440 metal detector. I bought this model, because I thought that it provides a good compromise between ergonomics, performance and price. I also wanted to try out a machine that uses multifrequency and is (supposedly) a little bit less EMI prone.
The hunt itself wasn't easy. It was hot that day, the place was trashy, partially with dense vegetation and lots of EMI due to a railroad close by. It's impossible to tell how a different detector would behave that day, but I will show you a direct comparison soon.
I think the Vanquish 440 performed well. I like its pleasant sound. I wish the audio would be a little bit more "intelligent" (with more information), but it is what it is.
As for this hunt... I was surprised with the result. I wasn't expecting to make any finds that day, let alone nice ones like the 1600s buckle, or the French Napoleonic navy button. All in all it was a great outing. Don't worry, the Deus will return very soon...

Nice job for your first time out with the Vanquish 440. I have the Nox 800 & the XP Deus and I love them both.
Thank you Ed, I also considered buying the Equinox when it came out, but (shortly before it came out) the shop forgot that I'm on the waiting list... After that I hesitated because of bad reviews about the ergonomics. I was afraid that it would be a little bit too (front) heavy (in steep areas I often hunt). Maybe some day I will change my mind...

Hello Robin, you are right, it's everything but pleasant. There also is the heat, humidity, strange flies and mosquitoes. Sometimes I really have to motivate myself, but after a while at home good memories outweight the bad ones.

Thank you very much. I start to question my Deus from time to time and buy something new, but after a while I always return to it. Well, I still hope to use different machines more often, but for scouting new areas Deus seems often a good choice.

One of the best machines you can get in that price point even today in 2024
I have many different brands of detectors including the XP Deus and Vanquish 540. I like to switch out sometimes just to see how each machine does in different areas. Great hunt 🤙

Minelab makes great machines. My husband has the 800. And has done well with it. I have on old Discovery model that is like the 440, but does not break down. It has been my go to since 2009. If you dislike the handle, contact Minelab and see if they have a cover for it. They are usually very accommodating. The bell is beautifully old fashioned ox bell, I believe. And I see the horse and profile on the old coin. All nice finds. Don't tell hamster about his wife!
Hello Merry, I think the poor Hamster knows... She isn't secretive about it... Contacting Minelab because of the handle would probably not help much, because that's something they sadly designed that way.

Nice hunt for the first time out. I agree that the sounds are easy on the ears. I would really like to see you use a Equinox a few times. Had mine for years. Deus is top shelf as well but I’ll admit I don’t care much for the sounds of the program your using now. Although it works really well. Good luck my friend.
Thank you, I almost bought an Equinox 800, but my dealer deleted me due to a mistake from the waiting list. After that I hesitated... mostly due to negative reviews about (weight) balance... I considered it as a potential problem in my steep locations.

I enjoyed the video my friend. I haven’t tried the 440 but I have been using the equinox 800 and it’s a great machine although I am still learning how to use it Correctly. I believe you did well using it for the first time
Thank you David, your Equinox seems a great detector with more options. I wanted to buy one but it never worked out. First time (at the very beginning) my dealer forgot that I'm on the waiting list, later I read a few comments about bad ergonomics and hesitated because of it. I thought, the Vanquish (with a lighter coil) could be a compromise.
Is it just me or does the soil always look beautiful in the places you visit

I love my 440. It was my first detctor. Now I use an Equinox 600. Love that, too, but honestly, the 440 was just as good.

I detect with a Vanquish 540 myself! Pretty great little detector's for the price range! I've found some deep relics with it!
Hello, thank you for your comment. Depth is something I would like to improve, because many of the small finds I find with the Deus are often almost out of reach. Maybe the Vanquish with it's multi frequency will help.

It loves iron and rust in woods or on a beach digs super deep targets but alot are bad had it for a year then just did what I should have done in first place .got an equinox lol best detector on the market next to the ctx 3030 woods parks beach all your needs in one model I now have the 600 and 800 equinox never changing again great hunt as usual my friend

Vanquish is a nice beginners detector to introduce people to metal detecting. Loving my Deus no wires and annoying battery packs

Maybe you ought to try farm fields and trails till your leg gets better. Seems like the woods and hills are too thick right now. Just a suggestion. 👍👍👍🇺🇸
Thank you John, I would like to but when you arrive somewhere with a train, chances to find a field with a farmer who can give you a permission are pretty small. Sometimes when I look through a train window, there are plenty of fields but not a single tractor for miles. In this case you don't even need to stop because it's pointless.
Soon there should be a little bit more activities on fields, so maybe I'll give it a try. We'll see.

My only regret was not just getting the 540 i like my 440 so much I got the v12 coil found my oldest dateable find a 1830 double gilt button and it was deep also found some silvers as well and many many relics it’s the deepest discriminate mode machine I have and seems to exel on mid range targets although it’s not “amazing” in heavy iron or can slaw I like to run in jewelry mode with the first iron segment notched out and the sensitivity one bar from full some people complain about this model cause they think they know the tones instantly but there’s a lot of nuance even for a three tone
Hello, congratulation on your oldest find! That sounds encouraging, I'll try your setting when I find the right place to hunt. I haven't used it in thick iron yet, but I read that it doesn't perform great. We'll see... I still have my Golden Mask for this type of scenarios.

I had to back off on the sensitivity when EMI is heavy.

Thank you, well it was a welcome change. I expected it to be a little bit more ergonomic. It could still be lighter in my opinion (the angle of the handle is also a little bit steep).
As for the performance... It was stable. I would have to test it in different places with other soil conditions.
In this spot I was satisfied with the performance and I believe that if I had only this detector, I could clean up a place like this pretty effective. The price/performance ratio seems very good.

The deus is a great machine but i think the new minelabs are the future/, the multi freq just see more/ at the end of the day just have fun treasure is just a bonus/cheers from oz
Hello, I'm sure multi frequency (done properly) has its strengths in certain scenarios. I would have to visit more places with different soil conditions.
Minelab is probably working on improvements, hopefully we will see this technology advance.

Hallo MD24. Tolles Video. Der französische Knopf ist sehr interessant. Was hältst du von dem 440? Ich selber habe mir am Anfang des Jahres den 540 gekauft. Finde ich prinzipiell überhaupt nicht schlecht. Großes Eisen ist ein bisschen schwer zu identifizieren, für mich. Gehe meistens im Jewelry-Modus mit aktiviertem Eisenton. Gut Fund und LG
Hallo Sonde, nett Dich wieder zu sehen. Der 440 bietet schon einiges an Leistung für relativ wenig Geld. Er konnte in dem Fall in relativ schwierigen Verhältnissen bestehen, doch es gibt noch unzählige Bodenverhältnisse, wo er sich behaupten muss.
Ich habe ihn z.B. vorletzen Sonntag woanders getestet und da reagierte er teilweise mit guten Tönen auf Eisen (das heißt, ich hatte das Gefühl, dass man die Spule manchmal mehrmals schwenken musste, damit er sich entscheidet, damit aus einem anfänglich guten Signal Eisen rauskommt).
Ich bin mir auch nicht 100% sicher, ob er alle (Kupfer) Splitter richtig mit einem mehr der weniger klaren Signal anzeigte. Den besten Fund hat er klar als solchen erkannt (dieser lag aber auch nicht besonders tief).
Ich habe noch ein Video gedreht, wo ich mit dem Vanquish und dem Deus gleichzeitig suche. Ich werde versuchen, es in naher Zukunft zu editieren, dann wird man vielleicht ein paar Schlüsse draus ziehen.

Thank you, people commented in the past that I touched poison ivy on many occasions, but I couldn't see any affect. Maybe I'm resistant to it. I have a huge problem with mosquitoes right now...

Is a good machine..but not perfect.
Dey dont like emi interferênce.. have to down the sensivity.
And vanquish dont like so much iron One the ground.
On the beach are wanderful, on wet sand full sensivity runs quiet.
Have good deep and very sensitive to small objects. Gold, etc..
But o want buy a golden mask for heavy iron..😉👍
Hello Carlos, thank you very much for your comment. I will have to try the Vanquish in other locations with different soil conditions. Unfortunately I don't live near a beach. For iron I already have a Golden Mask with a smaller coil, so I could "switch" to it should I find the right spot.

Congratulations! I like detecting paths, but I prefer when they are not active anymore. This means less trash and no annoying people :).

I never look at numbers (on any of my detectors), therefore I wasn't thinking about showing it. I guess I could do it, but this would interrupt the flow as it's not natural for me. I would strongly "advice" to anyone not to pay attention to a detectors screen...

NOT TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO BUT IT SEEMS TO ME IF YOU HAD GLOVES FOR WORKING WITH ALL THE RUSTY STUFF COMING OUT OF THE GROUND the chemical handle would not matter much sorry about the caps i thought i had it turned off.
Thank you Joe, I don't like using gloves. I think one should be able to touch a handle with the bare hand and no concern.
There also was a chemical smell, that's why I had to wrap it in plastic.

Legs, ankles and hands are your tools for discovery, and solitude. Have missed sharing the discoveries with you. Solitude is all around me. The time it takes for a primitive lifestyle and 6-7 months of winter preparation, fills the day. All 22 hours of it right now. Now I can try for 2 1/2 hrs. sleep before the sun is up again. Until You reveal the love story I'll be dreaming up scenarios for the happy couples meeting. Love the red!

I didn't like the older Minelab models as well, because the audio sounded "strange" (at that time) and I thought they were slow and heavy (my impression was based on TH-cam videos only). Now some of the aspects changed and I decided to give it a try. Well, I haven't found the perfect detector yet... :)

If you hit the ground like that while digging, for sure you will destroy any finds. Get a shovel to dig faster and with less effort.
