MY BMW IS DEAD // DME & CAS REMOVAL

  • Today on JD Cars we will be removing the DME and CAS module on my 2007 BMW 328i.
The Full Story: I was testing voltages on the hazard light button connector as instructed by a company (they shall remain unnamed) who asked me to do an interior light installation. Something must’ve have went wrong because the car went haywire. The windshield wipers went nuts- couldn’t stop them other than pulling the fuse, my whole dash died, no A/C, no turn signals, rear windows died, no headlight controls, the car is in limp mode, and it takes about 6 seconds of cranking before it fires and runs. I’ve checked numerous fuses and haven’t found a single blown one, and to top it off... the OBD port is not communicating whatsoever! I’d appreciate all and any help from you guys.
I have sent these components into a European automotive computer company who will hopefully be able to resolve the problem.

Thank you for actually showing the details of how to remove each part, most other videos skip ahead or fast forward through some very annoying parts, I just wish I had seen your video before I removed my DME, I didn’t disconnect my battery, hope I didn’t fry some components in my car…

Always swap out your (IVM)) on any used BMW. Always start with the IVM first. It distributes power to all major components on your Engine, including the Starter. It has several internal relays built into the IVM. The IVM is not that expensive.

My E90 had the ECU die recently. It was due to water ingress, the inside has been slowly corroding until eventually it gave up the ghost. It wasn't obvious from the outside and only when I opened it that I saw the corrosion. After some investigating I discovered that there is very poor drainage in the ECU box well. Water drains very slowly and if there is a rain storm (or maybe carwash) the water will not drain fast enough and the ECU box will flood from underneath. Judging from the water mark on the inside of the ECU there was an inch of water in there probably many times (ECU is not watertight). My car is a RHD so it might not be the same for you but I would remove the ECU box and check it anyway. I drilled a big hole in there to allow drainage. I also sealed the bottom half of the ECU with silicone. But you need to make sure it's non acidic sealant or you might do more damage than good.
BTW DDE is an ECU for the diesel cars so Europe only I guess.

Would the CAS module control the gearshift position LED and backlight for the Start/Stop button?
I have a battery drain issue on the 2008 320D that I am trying to troubleshoot. These lights are remaining active after the car is powered off and locked using the central locking. Even after 30mins these lights are remaining on. Removing the PDC module stopped the battery drain and I have read that the relay on the junction box for the PDC is controlled by the CAS module (Terminal 15 KL15).

    • @JDCarsChannel

Hi JD Cars, needs some help please as I am desperate with my 2012 F30 328i. I disconnected the battery when I went overseas. Came back and connected the battery back and not all is dead. The only things that work are the electric seats, comes the BMW logo on the dashboard and the positioning lights. All the rest is all dead. The car is in my garage unable to start, the BMW dealer wants me to tow the car in and wants 300AUD/hr plus 200AUD for the tow. I would be happy to pay if there was a security to have the car fixed but I am worry the tech would not be able to connect to the car onboard computer to access the faults like in your case.... What would you recommend? The battery is fully charged as I used a CTEK charger... I was thinking in buying an icarsoft CR Pro to check if I could connect to the car CPU... Any advice is welcomed!!

I have a 2002 BMW 745li we had a flat going about 70 did some damage to the front end and wires were hanging down from under the right front the tire ripped off the under cover and a lot of wires were bare and touching... after getting the car home and doing the repairs fixing the wires and all... I tried to start it and it almost started and then died... now the key fob wont accept the key and dash lights are flashing... and heavy battery drain... im not sure if it damaged the ECU but after seeing all its doing I'm going to order a new one and have it programed to the car... my question is could this effect or damage the CAS...? my wonderful bmw mechanic says... the CAS is damaged... and all the computors and modules are fried... but he couldn't connect the car to his computer because there is no communication from the ecu for him to check anything... he quoted me $4-6000 to repair... I will take it step by step and see if what he is saying is true... but I will start with the ecu and go from there

Hey JD, I had a 2004 BMW 530i. First year e60, in 3.5 years I dumped $25,000 in maintenance and repairs into it. Any BMW from 2004-2007 are by far the worse and most unreliable designs, my friend also had an 08 328xi e90, driveshaft bolts came loose, and hit the freeway then smacked the oil pan and busted it, and damaged his bumper. The BMWs of this generation (mine destroyed its transmission) e60-e90 are terrible, and should be avoided. Gorgeous cars but you’re better off with an F30 or an e39, or even an e46. Trust me dude, this is just the beginning... I sold mine. And was looking at an F30, but have been gravitating towards Mercedes-Benz, and although they are more reliable. They are not DIY Friendly and labor and parts are higher. But less likely to constantly break down, and because well the e350 4Matic AMG Sport is sick. Insurance is expensive though, hit me up on snap my friend (joeymcmahonuhhh) I’ll help you with your BMW whenever. Like I said, this is just the beginning.
