Something Just Came In The Mail!

I feel bad that I compared the EDD to the DMV in my last reel because MY DISABILITY CHECK JUST ARRIVED IN THE MAIL FOR WHEN I WAS PREGNANT 2 YEARS AGO! I seriously cannot believe it.
I had my second daughter in December 2020 and applied for DI so I could get paid during my mat leave. I knew nothing about the process and just hoped my doctor would guide me. I worked for a super small nonprofit, was the only employee in CA and we didn’t have HR. I was on my own to figure out how my mat leave would work. When I cried through my 6-week postpartum appointment my doctor said I should take another month to recover and she’d take care of letting the EDD know.
What I didn’t know is the EDD emailed me some forms that I needed to fill out to get that extra DI pay. So I never did and never got paid.
But last year I went to a training put on by the EDD and realized I had never gotten paid and there is a chance I still could. I just needed to appeal and let them know why it took me so long to make the claim.
Once I did that, the check arrived like 3 days later. 🤯 I don’t think I’ve ever been so surprised.
So apply for SDI when you’re pregnant and if you don’t get paid, look into it! Advocate for yourself! You might get a surprise check 2 years later!
