You can use two joysticks with the Robotron port; one for movement and one for shooting, replicating the arcade layout. Plus, there's a twin-stick arcade controller from Edladdin Controllers that is made especially for this game.
Yep, someone mentioned it already, but a friend of the channel, BD Retromods, also has options for this too. His 7800 gamepads are nice, but he has a dual stick arcade controller that I’ve been considering. 🤩😁😎
The one glaring omission from this list is Food Fight. It is another arcade port by GCC, who created the arcade version. In many 7800 players' opinions, this is one of the top games produced for it.
Absolutely! However, at the time of the making of this video, I cut three other really good ones for time and Food Fight was one of them. Besides, one dozen seemed like a good place to stop versus fifteen haha! I may be making another video later on with Food Fight in it, of course. 😁
The 2023 homebrew release of Mario Bros absolutely makes the original release look like a 2600 version. Get the homebrew version and enjoy faithful arcade action on your 7800. You’re welcome 🎉
@XboxAlive I just picked up the NES version this past weekend. I had given my original copy to my younger son. I’m looking forward to finding this home brew for 7800! 😁😎
The 7800 version of Joust is hands down the best version. Even better than the arcade. GCC developed it and improved the physics over the arcade original, which had weightier birds in order to munch quarters. For the 7800 version the physics are perfected, and no other port comes close.
@@GAMECLOSET With all due respect to Iwata-san, the NES version is really wonky, cumbersome, doesn't play right. Sprites are ugly. Stick with Balloon Fight.
Asteroids is still a great home port on the 7800 and Deluxe looks great. Centipede is a great port. Food Fight is a great port. But Atari needs to get its own IP back in the game with solid ports. The 7800 needs a good version of Gauntlet, Klax, Lunar Lander, Marble Madness, Missile Command and the under-rated Peter Packrat. It also needs Warlords and a redo of Avalanche + Super Breakout to work with paddles. I'm one who was never been a big fan of Dig Dug in the arcade or the ports - and it's a Namco game anyhow. For Namco MsPacman,JrPacman would be preferred. Not a huge fan of Galaga on 7800 as its speed is compromised. And its port of Xevious doesn't do the original credit either - needs redone. Robotron needs two sticks so it's always going to be compromised. A Defender+Stargate port would be welcome though.
All very good points. I think nostalgia speaks a lot of times when it comes to games we used to play at home. I used to like Xevious and I understand why people like it, I just don’t like it anymore. It was fun for me years ago, but it’s lackluster now. I’d LOVE a Defender or Stargate port! And a good Gauntlet too!
Only recently just got into the 7800 (and Atari in general). Got 6 games right now: Pole Position II, Galaga, F18 Hornet, and the recent re-releases of Food Fight, Fatal Run, and Ninja Golf.
This would be the only Atari system I’d play, Choplifter is a favorite series for me! Xenophobe is better on the Lynx but that’s me, pretty solid list of games my friend….nice vid 😎
Thank you, my friend! It’s just a shame that Atari didn’t have a slightly better console to go up against the NES. It has some decent stuff… too little of it, but good stuff.
Thank you so much, Operation Shutdown! I include the price on some videos like this. The longer Atari 2600 videos I include the price too. Thank you for the comment! 😎😁
If you can find it, give Donkey Kong PK a go. It's an enhanced version of Donkey Kong with POKEY sound and challenge closer to the arcade original. It gives the NES and Colecovision ports a run for their money. I still hope that DKJr gets the same treatment at some point.
I find DK on 7800 to be decent graphically, sound is lacking, of course, but DK Jr I feel is terrible by comparison to the Colecovision. I’ll have a look for DK PK. Thanks!
You don't need a two button controller to play Xevious. Toggle the difficulty settings, and you can fire both weapons simultaneously just by holding down one button.
I got the retron 77 last year and have slowly been adding games to the collection. I haven't played any 7800 games so this was cool to watch and see the graphic differences!
@RadBashGaming back in the day, I had about 33 of them. Now I have about 15, after beginning the collection again. Xenophobe is a great deal of fun. That and Dig Dug were my faves. I never liked Pole Position II though. I felt it was boring as all get-out.

@RadBashGaming yeah, Pole Position II was the pack-in game with 7800. Can’t swing a dead cat without hitting PP2. 😁🐕 But I’m not a “full set“ kinda guy, but since it’s a small collection… why not? Yeah, most are fairly cheap, but there’s a few that are $100+, line Activision’s Commando. It’s better than the 2600 port, of course, but it still sucks to me. 😎😂 I’ll get that one last.

My 2600+ plays the paddle games I like. Did you update yours yet? I’m curious what games it won’t play. As for homebrews, the software is basically the same as the 2600+. It has the most updated version, but the only real difference is the addition of wireless. Please, don’t be too disappointed when it doesn’t play your face homebrews. Ib only have four 2600 homebrews and they all work… but that’s all software dependent since the consoles are not fpga. I’d paid more for that. Thanks for your comment. 🙏😁😎

I love Dig Dug too. I've always preferred it over Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man ever since it debuted in arcades. For some reason, I've always just been much better at Dig Dug. Looks incredible on the system and plays so very well, especially for an inexpensive game. I got a 7800 that was rebuilt from the ground up by an Airforce veteran and I'm glad I did. I love that Dark Chambers doesn't have Gauntlet's timer for one thing. I also think it's really clever for Dark Chambers to have enemies that change from tougher to easier versions as you shoot them. It's like having not only your character, but also your enemies with life bars. Very few Atari games did that (such as Empire Strikes Back), so I was always very impressed when I got one that did. There's a version of Dark Chambers for the 2600 too, but it is very confusing given the much more limited playfield which makes you get lost really easily. Sorry to say, but the 7800+ and or the 2600+ will never be on my list, they both failed for me, since I would have to purchase original cartridges of which I have only about 3-4! so why would I get either of these machines? It would have been to easy to implement an SD Card slot or USB so you could play the games that way, like it was done on the Atari 400 Mini but this was done by another company - somebody with common sense.
Well, they’re not for everyone, especially for the reason you stated and I quite agree as do a lot of people. If you want to play ROMs then stick with something else. This isn't for you. Some of us remember the cartridge era and preferred it. There is a pleasure is collecting physical hardware. I use a Harmony SDcart with my 2600 but I still prefer the experience of using carts.
Well stated. I’ve made the sane points in comments and in my 2600+ vs Retron 77 video. The worst part about no SD card slot it makes updating extremely difficult. Atari = Consumer Hostile.

Even if it wasn’t for putting ROMs on an SD card, the SD card capability would have vastly streamlined updating the consoles, but the new Atari were too myopic to realize this. Thanks for the comment! 😎😁
I'm in the middle of bg3 campaign, imagine playing this after that ... 😅
I think this would be a pallet cleanser after BG3. 😂😂😂
@GAMECLOSET you mean like a shit sponge in roman times ? Well yes I can imagine that.
