Awesome list and even better presentation. TBH, if you picked 51 different games, I probably would have thought to myself, "great list of games!" That's how awesome the Atari 2600 and it's game library was.
Holy cow, the amount of information you covered in a half-hour is incredible! I love the rapid-fire journey thru 50 games and there was even stuff I learned that I didn’t know before. Bravo! 👏
Great list, you definitely know your stuff! Some key ones I would add would be: Keystone Kapers, Pressure Cooker and Starmaster from Activision Phoenix, Joust and Solaris from Atari Montezuma's Revenge from Parker Brorthers and was Adventure really not on this list or did I just miss it somehow? On to your next 40 and I'll see how many of these showed up on that one!
Nope, no Adventure. I really despise that game. I know I am in the minority, but when I really look at the game on the whole without nostalgic eyes, to me, the game is terrible. I was going to put Pressure cooker in the 40 video, but honestly, as cool as the game looks and the concept is, I just can't figure not out! LOL. Makes me feel like an idiot. I haven't played Montezuma's Revenge- I will have a look at that one. Thank you for your comment! It's most appreciated. 😎😀
@@GAMECLOSET Adventure is very different from all the other games that would make my list. It was the first Atari game I played and has a sort of symbolic resonance with me. With other games, you're just shooting things a lot of the time, but Adventure felt like it meant something, if that makes any sense. I'm not saying that it told some sophisticated story or anything, but it just touched me on a deeper level than even the other games for the system that I really liked. I'm sure a lot of that comes from the fact that it was my first step into an amazing new world, but at the same time, it had a geographic/geometric element that made it feel bigger, and tools you had to use that did likewise. I don't think it was as replayable as some other games, but it definitely had magic to it. Still, it doesn't have the same sort of constant reflex-based engagement that other games have, and I can understand how somebody could find it tedious or dull.
@stuffyouotterlistento1461 I totally respect everyone’s nostalgia for Adventure and wouldn’t want to dismiss its early contribution to gaming and to players. However, me personally, I couldn’t play it. I didn’t like it myself and my friends all loved it. 🤷 But I just couldn’t get into it. Atari Superman is genuinely a bad game versus Adventure though, but in my eyes, they’re the sane to me personally even though Adventure is a good game and Superman isn’t. (Call me crazy.) 🤪 😂😂😂
I have this Raiders of the Lost Ark tip sheet, and a unfoldable, full-blown map/solution guide, that I got for free from Atari by calling an 800 number back in the day. It’s so sweet!
Yes, indeed, Don! I like mine, it’s still in need of some updates, but it’s great to use my actual cartridges and even my paddles on an HDMI TV. Is good to hear from you, sir!
Oooo! I’m glad you mentioned it again! Thank you. I’ll have a look. I just bought Solar Storm again because my original one that I got in a lot never worked. That’s a great game too. I’ll have a peek at that one. The C64 version was pretty darned good too, so the Atari version has to be decent right? That Jedi Arena though… yuck. Haha!
I was impressed with the 2600 one. For what it is. Never played any other version, outside of trying it in the arcade in 83 because my friend was crazy about it. I lost interest in videogames at that point for a few years. (As an aside).
Great list! Freeway was awesome as a kid, and the cooperative/dual play is a nice touch. Oh, the prototype of the game used a person, and guess what it looks like when hit? I got Solaris in 1987 and really stretched the hardware to a very respectable level. So much with so little, though some games did include additional RAM on-chip... Now Mangia... a creative classic, but it ain't $7.49, LOL.

I was trying to think of the games I played the most as a kid, and Megamania, Seaquest, Demon Attack, Pitfall and Tutankham all come to mind. Adventure and Asteroids were early favorites, but we played them to the point of burnout, so that by the time we had a decent selection of games, they were mostly neglected.
@@GAMECLOSET Seaquest, Demon Attack and Megamania were all late-stage favorites for me. They're the last games for the system I can remember being really into, before the NES (and Super Mario Bros in particular) came along and supplanted the Atari. So that list of mine might have a recency bias, as much as that term can apply to something that happened in the '80s. But the Atari games were getting more sophisticated as, I guess, their technology and coding improved, so it's hard not to see them as standouts.
@@GAMECLOSET The action in Seaquest is really good, and if it had been managed to have different stages or even just been space-based somehow (I was very much a Star Wars kid), it would probably have been an easy favorite for me, instead of just being one of my favorites. Megamania had the variety, but none of the individual stages could compete with Seaquest.
@stuffyouotterlistento1461 100% agree. Three’s a couple I didn’t put in any lists yet. (Keeping that for another video) but these were more sophisticated Atari games made later. One was really sophisticated too. You’re right, NES sure supplanted Atari. The 7800 was quite weak by comparison. And their lineup stale and predictable.
@stuffyouotterlistento1461 Megamania was very random though and it kept randomizing the actions of the baddies as the game progressed. That was quite impressive.
I haven't had a video game system since the wii and being a retro gamer, I am interested in getting either the Atari 2600+ or the 7800+. Can you still buy these retro cartridges new (is Atari re-releasing them) or do you have to find them in eBay or used?
Firstly, you can get old Atari 2600 & 7800 cartridges at gaming expos, garage sales, game stores, eBay, etc. Secondly, Atari has released a couple new games too, and they have re-released some games as "Special Editions" that were limited and the exact same as the originals. Also, there is a GREAT Homebrew scene out there too. Atari bought Atari Age last year and that means all the Homebrew games on there are theirs too. As for the 2600+ vs the 7800+, they both play 7800 & 2600 games. The only real difference is that the 7800+ can natively use its own bluetooth controllers. That's Pricecharting.com's numbers, not mine HAHA! If I sold my loose copy of HERO right now, and mine is very nice, I'd be asking at least $85 US. I actually saw a loose one at a con recently at $110 US! 😀 Thanks. for the comment, mate- it's much appreciated! (I have albums here in the studio you can't see on camera- more Megadeth and Maiden (Up the Irons!) and AC/DC! Yeah!!!)
It’s a great one! I remember buying my copy of Demon Attack new at Big Town department store back in the day. I got it on sale for $9.99! My best friend and I played the heck out of it forever. 😁😎 Thank you for your comment!
Thank you for including Megamania. Lots of people neglect that one and I don't know why. It's easily one of the best Atari 2600 games I ever played (If not _the_ best). With eight stages of enemies that work differently, the game has a lot more variety to offer than you usually see on the system.
Oh absolutely! Megamania is so good. I stink at it but my best friend would play for a long while after I died. He was amazing’ 😂 I nest be could still clean my clock on that game.
Rarity & popularity unfortunately. Just like other games. HERO is the priciest one on the list, and I have seen it for about $55. But it keeps going up.
My pleasure! It’s a good console and will be better when there’s some updates. But for 90% of what gamers are looking for from an Atari 2600/7800 clone, this will do nicely especially since it has proper paddle support. 😀😎 Thanks for watching!
That was a Pricecharting.com value. I actually saw it at CORGSCON Expo in Columbus for $25 in really good shape a couple weeks ago. Prices vary and change, of course- and that video is over 5 months old. I do wish you luck on your quest though. Side note: I did get a great deal on Frankenstein’s Monster for 2600! Got it for $10 and it’s usually $50-$68 (ish). The PCB was loose inside that the guy didn’t want to pierce the label to repair it so he oped to give someone daring a good deal. I repaired it easily without piercing the label and re-glued it back in place. There are serendipitous deals out there! Ha-Za! 😁😎
This is a video about must haves for the 2600+ but some games you didn’t include because you use a Retron 77 to capture them? Why not wait until you can capture with the plus? Also, Juno First does work but good look finding a copy or Beamrider for less than $60
Why not wait? Well, if you watched the video, you’d see that these were taken from a series of FIVE videos that began about three months BEFORE the 2600+ was released. This video is all of those videos combined including some updates. By the time you get to the 5th set of ten in the video, I was using the 2600+, I said so too. Also, who said a fun game had to be less than $60? I’m sure you have some Xbox One games or PS4 games… did you pay over $4 for any of those? Values are right there on the screen. My intention was to show fun games, not just cheap games. Additionally, I’m allowed to show exactly what I want to. Furthermore, who said there wouldn’t be more? It’s sad that someone can’t make a fun and funny video that’s innocuous without someone coming out of the shadows to cast darkness and negativity with their comments. Takes all kinds I guess.
I wanted to mention also, that I didn’t include EVERY essential game because I don’t own ALL of them, nor have I played the entire 2600 library. Have you? I have SEVERAL actual 2600s in my home and a way to capture footage if need be. I choose HDMI consoles when possible for fidelity’s sake. Plus, after this video was filmed, I obtained several more GREAT games that may be in a Part 6! If I chose to make one. It is my channel after all.
@@GAMECLOSET thanks for explaining, I must have missed that part. Wasn’t trying to be a jerk so sorry. Thanks for sharing this vid and the good recommendations. Merry Christmas.🎄
Tried multiple carts on the 2600+. Only issue so far is background interference noise on pitfall. ( crackling sound) No issue with my cart on an original 2600. Anyone else having this problem?
I didn't have any issues except that I had to clean mine. It boots up Everytime in my 7800 but I noticed that they seem to be a bit more finicky in my 2600+ but I haven't heard anybody else say that.
So these were all recorded on the Retron? Why didn't you just record them on the 2600+? Also, do you have a similar video about 7800 games on the 2600+?
The 2600+ hadn’t been released yet when these were recorded. The first 4 videos of 10 games each were released as a “Get these for your Atari 2600+” video. The 5th video, all were recorded on the 2600+. And there was a bonus game that made 51 total (Stargate) that had finally been tested on 2600+ as working by me and Atari. That makes the full 51 games. There will be one more video of 10 Atari 2600 games coming soon and then there will be a 7800 games video coming soon too. 😎😂
@m0nde Thank you!! I’ve got something really special coming up in a couple days. Been working hard on a new video. Hint: Do you like Robocop? Trying to finish up this week! 😎😀

I’ll have to give it another look bc you’re the second person to comment that one was pretty good. 😎😀 I’ll have a look. Thanks for the comment!
Oh, and Tempest on 2600 was abominable... I personally despise Adventure so I don't recommend it myself. Gravitar is AWESOME... but it is going to be in another video... Pete Rose Baseball- never played it; I will have a peek. Pole Position on the 2600 isn't something I recommend either, that is why I recommend Enduro. Thanks for the comment!
Yes, good catch. I misspoke during the filming, but they played the same on the Retron. It’s why I mentioned that in Text Overlay as both Breakout and Super Breakout work on 2600+ but not on Retron.
Ahhh... there are 40 MORE! Check out that video right here. (There was a link at the end of the video too). And you will want to check out the video immediately after that one too. 😎 😀 th-cam.com/video/eNT2tZ-Siio/w-d-xo.html
I can’t imagine anyone under 45 having any interest in Atari. I loved the Atari 2600 as a kid. I decided to reminisce and played an Atari with games preloaded. After about an hour I realized it sucks. Atari was fun in 70s and early 80s. Now it’s just lame.
I can respect that viewpoint absolutely. I’ve mentioned that most Atari games now, are less interesting and engaging than phone app games. There’s a few, not many, that can capture an audience for more than 3 to five minutes at a time. And you’re right, the general age demographic for Atari 2600 through 7800 games is about 40 to 60. However, it’s interesting to see some younger generation kids having an interest in the simplicity of these early 1st generation consoles. And there’s some GREAT modern homebrews out there too for these consoles that could only be possible because of contemporary technology and the specialized chips & processors inside of those cartridges. Now frankly, I can’t see any allure in the Odysee II or the Fairchild Channel F. I also have no nostalgia for them, so that comes into play for sure. But I think the quality of those systems is far less and the games are all mostly junk (a hot take for sure). Anyway, there’s more on my channel besides Atari stuff, so take solace in that haha! Thank you for your comment! I appreciate it. 😁😎
@@GAMECLOSETme being 21 and having around 70 atari 2600 games in my collection I find this console to be more of a nostalgia console. Out of my ~70 games I only find kaboom, frostbite and river raid fun. There is just nothing good, and then arcade ports like centipede and ms pacman, but i’d rather just play those on my a1up or plug in plays than the junky atari version. While having much better graphics and capabilities than its competitors, fairchild and magnavox as you said, to me they just all play the same as someone who didnt grow up with the system. Same with colecovision and intellivision, you can tell each system apart from its graphical capabilities, but they just all play the same and feel likes youre just moving squares around a screen for the novelty of video games being new at the time
So i just went to ebay see if i can get stargate Sponsored RARE The Arcade Superstar! STARGATE WATA-Certified 8.0 B+ SEALED! Atari 2600 RARE The Arcade Superstar! But every game can be Call of Duty or Halo. While they did age, they’re not games you play for hours on end. They’re subtle time wasters now. Arcade quickies. Everyone has their tastes and obviously, it’s not for you and that is fine. That’s why you and I play newer games now. But nostalgia does win the day for many people.

@Atarifan72 I appreciate your reply. Thank you. It means a lot. Merry Christmas to you too!
spider man fell to his death 23:55 lol
SPLAT! Yes… yes he did! 😂😂😂
Nice list
Thank you and thanks for the comment! 😁😎
Tried multiple carts on the 2600+. Only issue so far is background interference noise on pitfall. ( crackling sound) No issue with my cart on an original 2600. Anyone else having this problem?
I didn’t check out Pitfall yet. I’ll let you know. Did you clean the cart? Sometimes that helps. Thanks for the comment!😎😀
I didn't have any issues except that I had to clean mine. It boots up Everytime in my 7800 but I noticed that they seem to be a bit more finicky in my 2600+ but I haven't heard anybody else say that.
Yeah, the 2600+ is being updated to address the issues with 7800 games. There’s a beta out now, but I’d wait until it’s public. 👍🏻😎😀
there's a couple games where the sound has static. Jungle Hunt, a few others. everyone should take deoxit to their carts contacts
@@provisionalhypothesis That is a good idea as those carts are technically antiques now. So, thorough clean is a fantastic idea!
Chopper command my all time favorite
I had this game for years and played it wrong until a friend showed me the right way. Now I can play it for hours. So fun!
@@GAMECLOSET good content, subscribed.
@m0nde Thank you!! I’ve got something really special coming up in a couple days. Been working hard on a new video. Hint: Do you like Robocop? Trying to finish up this week! 😎😀
Demon Attack is a straight ripoff of arcade Gorf.
@bobstewart420 and Gorf is a rip off of Space Invaders 😂 I believe it was Shakespeare who said (and I paraphrase): “There is nothing original anymore.” 😎
I personally like Death Star Battle. idk.
It’s been a looooong time since I played that one. I had it when I was a kid, but I think I traded it to a friend at school or my cousin for another game if I recall correctly. I’ll have to give it another look bc you’re the second person to comment that one was pretty good. 😎😀 I’ll have a look. Thanks for the comment!
hmm where is Combat, Adventures, Pete Rose Baseball, Pole Position, Demons To Diamonds, Tempest, Gravitar, Solaris???
Did you watch the follow-up video? There was a link at the end of this video. 😀 th-cam.com/video/eNT2tZ-Siio/w-d-xo.html
That looks like Breakout, not Super Breakout.
Yes, good catch. I misspoke during the filming, but they played the same on the Retron. It’s why I mentioned that in Text Overlay as both Breakout and Super Breakout work on 2600+ but not on Retron.
you are good.
😀😎 Thank you!!! 💯🍿🎥
51 games and no Solaris? how is that possible?
Ahhh... there are 40 MORE! Check out that video right here. (There was a link at the end of the video too). And you will want to check out the video immediately after that one too. 😎 😀 th-cam.com/video/eNT2tZ-Siio/w-d-xo.html
CUSTER"S REVENGE
😂😂😂 Beat’em and Eat’em!
Same with colecovision and intellivision, you can tell each system apart from its graphical capabilities, but they just all play the same and feel likes youre just moving squares around a screen for the novelty of video games being new at the time
@christocream that’s exactly why I don’t like the game Adventure, personally. Yuck. Lol.
My young sons thought Dark Chambers was some new pixel art type game and love it. They keep coming in my room asking to play.
@coppermutant HA! That’s fantastic and funny. Now that’s a cool story. Do they like the NES or SNES & Genesis at all too? Thanks for the comment!
Can you play Star Path SuperCharger games on it? Communist mutants from space is great.
Unfortunately no. I know someone who has all of those games and the supercharger, and it doesn’t work.
So i just went to ebay see if i can get stargate Sponsored

Counterpoint...there are no must have Atari 2600 games. They've all aged horribly
