It was fun introducing classic Atari games to my nephew Will & his fiancé Nicole. It's wild for me to think they had NEVER picked up a real Atari joystick or played any of the games!! As you'll see in the video, they loved them!

I feel like you should have mentioned that the Gamestation Pro supports third party controllers, and can play GB, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, and Genesis games and probably others. (Genesis would be best with a third party controller) Also that it came with 2 controllers while the Atari 2600+ only comes with 1, so you have to buy a second controller and the paddle controllers are also separate (though they come in a pack of 2 with a 4-in-1 cart)

I love the cartridge slot on the 2600+. There is a great visceral feel and satisfaction with using my original cartridges. The controllers are fully faithful to the originals. It would be nice to access Stella Options but I can live without it. I don't mind the lack of save states because the games are simple. It has a better quality output than my A/V modded 2600 Woody with a retrotink upscaler on a modern TV. Well worth it a lifelong Atari Fan. The Gamestation looks interesting but I think it's going down in Atari history as a step above the @games systems, nothing worth getting too excited about. What Atari needs to do is make a new 7800 controller for use with the 2600+.

Bring back wood trim! Put it on everything! That 1970s station wagon look is timeless!

6:18 / 16:27 Joust and Berzerk are muh fave Atari games. Dig Dug is kinda mean-spirited when you think about it.
6:19 Wood trim on a controller! Gucci to the max!
7:34 What do Bruce Campbell and Jack Black have in common? Pitfall.
8:50 Berzerk! Not only is it a good game, but the box art is just perfect.

I have 75 2600 carts and my original console that I got for Christmas. Still works like a charm, the joysticks and paddle controllers are still flawless despite a lot of abuse. It even looks decent connected to the RF on my somewhat dated 46" Samsung. But getting a really clean image is super appealing. The emulation part always feels like a massive caveat for me. Really cool to see the Atari 2600+ come out during the digital age. I still use sticks over gamepads most of the time for gaming. It's what I started on. Great for the people who want one, but the Atari 2600+ is definitely not for me. I have 100's of games and a few emulators for the Atari (all versions,) my PC, so why would I need to get one? I lack the room to store any physical games, and, I have no nostalgia for it. Even though I was 7 years old when this first came out in 1977. I never had one. In fact I had never even heard of it back then. The only console I used was a Master System back in 1989, which I played Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on, for about 10 minutes before I had to give it back to the owner. Then, in 2017, I got a broken PS 2, (just to see if I could fix it.) Then in 2018 I got 3 (broken,) PS Vita handhelds and 3 (also broken,) PS Vita TV's (all now fully working.) and they are the only consoles I have ever owned since 1970. I was more into the PC side of things and more enjoyed doing things like Spreadsheets, Music Creation, my dad's taxes and that kind of thing, and fixing radios, tv's, vcr's, and mainly PC's etc. I used to love typing in programmes into my Speccy and CPC 464, and creating music on my Amiga. Anyway, sorry, I do ramble! To those who get one or both, I really do hope you enjoy them!

Wife and I just got our 2600+ and picked up several games for it. OMG its fun! The only thing is on all the reviews online I am surprised no one is talking about two things. One how incredibly stiff the joysticks are right off the bat. So much so its hard to even play Pacman with them. Two the paddles, there is notable lag or something going on making fine tuning movement for games like Kaboom and Warlords impossible. Now maybe these things will reduce as they get broken in, but I remember the action on the original paddles being much smoother, also looser joysticks on the main controllers. I love it and it looks great on our 55" TV using the 4:3 aspect ratio.

I know I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I bought mine just for the paddle games - I actually bought some more carts to play on it. It's not so much lag they aren't moving properly. If you turn the paddle very slowly they don't move pixel by pixel they move in chunks. With no one mentioning it I'm worried it won't get fixed. I've only seen one video that noticed it. It's great they made the paddles they seem to be good and apparently work fine on real hardware.

If they're both emulation based, I can't see much reason to buy the Atari 2600 Plus. It's still got compatibility issues, and is drastically limited in its scope. The GameStation Pro seems to be the way to go; it's more versatile and a bit flashier with the RGB-lit buttons.

I think it boils down to whether or not you already have 2600 cartridges. If you do, get the 2600+, if you don't, get the Gamestation Pro.

I have a 2600+ and loves it. I wanted the 2600+ because I have about 40 Atari 2600 and 7800 carts from my childhood so having the ability to play both with HDMI is great. Only thing I wish was offered was a reproduction 7800 controller.

Great video and awesome to see the younger generation try these games.
For me after I found the Flashback 50th Anniversary gold mini console could be hacked so I could put with nice box art and every 2600 game, I decided to cancel my 2600+. I do like the idea of the 2600+, but mostly for 7800 and then you need another fire button.
Have you tried the joystick and paddles on the 2600+ on a Flashback? As if the paddles work better I might pick it up.
If I didn't have a gaming PC with Launchbox into my main TV, I probably would have gone for the other device, as its a nice easy to use multiple system emulator, with loads like the gameboy, mega drive and snes emulated.

I can see younger kids today enjoying classic Atari videogames. Mobile games on iOS and Android often follow the gameplay designs of the Golden Age, and there is a retro purity that might appeal to anyone. I think there is a far wider acceptance of different visual designs, as opposed to constantly obsessing over graphics . After all, this has been Nintendo philosophy for decades.
Personally, I would buy the 2600 Plus, if only so I can collect physical cartridges, and especially the newer indie/homebrew games from AtariAge. But I can also see the appeal of the GameStation as an emulation console for social gatherings.

I was 9 years old when my dear father bought a used c64 for the family. The games Stellar Wars and Burger Time followed with the computer. I remember the long loading times on the cassete player. I eventually obtained turbo-tape games, that shortened the wait. They were illegal, but everyone used the turbo-tape, so why not. My favourite games for the 8bit c64 were Paperboy, Gianna Sisters, California Games and some more I can't remember the name of. The sound of this game-system was slightly different from the NES.

If I still had my cache of old Atari cartridges, I’d consider the 2600+ but lack of support for Pitfall 2 may have been a dealbreaker against it since that was the last Atari game I bought BITD before moving on to bigger & better things…

I own an Atari Game Station Pro and for an emulation console it's pretty neat. It not only sports a nostalgic Atari look, Atari inspired Joysticks with built in Paddles but it can play ALL the Atari Consoles. It can also play Genesis, NES, and many other console games. They'll be plenty of glitches since it's NOT FPGA but for emulation software it's nice. The Genesis games run very well on it from my experience.
The 2600+ and 7800+ only makes sense for people with Cartridge collections.

Hey Joseph, I'm in the New York area and there are a ton of Atari games all over the place here. If you wanted we could probably figure out something where I would buy a bunch for you and then ship them out to New Zealand. Shipping is still pricey, but at least we could find a way where it would just be the one single shipping box.

Thanks for the offer! I haven't given this any extra thought recently, and I've been spending my money on a Playstation 3 and some PS1 / PS3 games, and ordered an Agon Light 2 SBC. As a result I don't have any spare cash right now to buy other hardware, but when I do I'll probably pick up a 2600+ and definitely look at taking your offer up. Now that you've mentioned it, I suppose I'd better make a list of the games I would actually want 😄 Thanks again, and have a great 2024!

I'm shocked you didn't mention the GSP also plays Nintendo, Genesis, SNES, and Gameboy ROMS! I prefer the GSP, because it allows me to play games I never got to play before I buy the physical cartridges. I'm from your generation. I started with the original Atari 2600 and once I was able to buy my own system, I bought the updated version of Atari 2600 and the Nintendo with the Gyro. I never got to play the Pokemon games, because I was in my mid 20s and my mind was on girls and getting my life together. So, now that I'm older, I'm playing games for the first time I never played, especially the pokemon series, which I really like. The GSP has allowed me to try these games as ROMS, before I decide to invest my hard earned money on the physical cartridges and system.
