- I'm comparing the new Atari 2600+ vs Atari GameStation Pro. Two very different systems but yet both are pretty cool in their own right!

It was fun introducing classic Atari games to my nephew Will & his fiancé Nicole. It's wild for me to think they had NEVER picked up a real Atari joystick or played any of the games!! As you'll see in the video, they loved them!
I’m glad Will and Nicole had a great time with the paddles 👍
That’s because Atari games suck. Seriously, especially in 2023.
Same with many arcade games, they are boring af
so anal retentive ... more than 99% is GOOD ENOUGH lol ... only AHOLES would be sad about it NOT being 100% compatible, when it's more than 99 XD
@@mcgritty8842You obvious don't know anything about videogames or what your talking about and your taste in videogames is pretty lame, gritty, grimy & McCrappy! 🤣
@@mcgritty8842 Speak for yourself. I love going back to the roots of gaming, and I'm sure many others do as well. It helps us connect to the generations past, and appreciate the advancements we've made even more. Plus, they're simple and honest fun, and great for families.
Props to your nephew for wearing a Rush shirt.
Will and Nicole becoming bonafide side characters in the MJU.
NPCs 😂
I own both of these systems and love them both for different reasons. I have been rebuilding my physical Atari 2600 and 7800 games since getting this 2600 Plus
This video gave me an idea. You should have an annual gaming triathlon where you have gamers young and old utilizing retro and modern games through the decades to see who is the best. The winner gets awarded an actual metal jesus (kinda like an oscar or a grammy).
Nice idea!
Hah cool!
Younger generation will always win. Old gamers played Centidpede and Pac-Man, new gamers play full fleshed games with advanced controls that old gamers can’t fathom
@mcgritty8842 I think it depends on the games. Newer games hold your hand a lot. Give a young gamer an old Zelda game and they might be stumped.
Tolle Idee 💡
Warlords was one of my favs growing up. So good to see the younger generation enjoying our classics today!
4 player mode is fun still.
Agreed! Back in those days there were always people around to play that one with…
This would make my gaming collection life complete. My mom bought the original when it first came out. To see this in a slightly smaller form factor with HDMI out and can use the same cartridges I've had for decades is unbelievable.
One thing to bear in mind - they only tested NTSC cartridges for the compatibility list. Being in Australia I have a number of Atari 7800 PAL games that do not work on the 2600+. Even though they are listed as PASS on the compatibility list. Food Fight, Crossbow, Choplifter, Xevious, Joust & Ms PAC-Man for the 7800 all failed on my 2600+
Update today
Just want to say I really like your videos dude. You’re a very unique gaming TH-camr and I enjoy seeing that physical media is still important especially to a big and entertaining TH-camr like you. Thanks for the content 👍
I appreciate that!
Will & Nicole seem like top people - great additions to the Metal Jesus crew ☮️
I had a Colecovison with the 2600 module. I think it is time to get the 2600+ and pick up some of my favorite titles. I fondly remember Pitfall, Missile Command, Frogger, and Crackpots to name a few.
always a good day when we get another metal jesus video
I bought a broken Atari 2600 and fixed it, then was addicted collecting games. Something about popping in and out games and using those controllers, is nostalgia. I like that fall game and wall jump game. Is that only on 10-1 cartridge, not sold alone in stores?
Seeing those two in your videos is always fun. Looks like you were having a great time!
So crazy that they included MAME support!
I feel like you should have mentioned that the Gamestation Pro supports third party controllers, and can play GB, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, and Genesis games and probably others. (Genesis would be best with a third party controller) Also that it came with 2 controllers while the Atari 2600+ only comes with 1, so you have to buy a second controller and the paddle controllers are also separate (though they come in a pack of 2 with a 4-in-1 cart)
How do you load it to play every retro system? My dad got one for Christmas today pretty sweet
@@RockstarMabma GenXGrownup has a video on that th-cam.com/video/Cn_BocjMaq4/w-d-xo.html
@@RockstarMabma Also note there was a recent firmware update, GenXGrownup has a video on that as well
Atari. Back when video games weren't 29 hour movies. Retro gaming is nice because you don't need to have hours set aside. Your can play for 30 mins and have fun.
The input lag is most likely coming from your modern TV rather than the emulator itself. Make sure you have the TV in game mode in order to reduce the input lag.
100% good advice. 👍
no the lag comes from the device itself, and is only with the provided controllers. If you use a different joystick there is no lag
merry christmas !!! keep enjoying making videos as we enjoy watching them. thanks and all the best ❤
Thank you! You too!
Good video brother! I still have my OG Atari 2600 from when I was a kid. Would love to see you do a video on hooking up the OG console to a modern tv.
Great video, MJ, and I'm happy to see a younger generation having a great time.
Yeah. The GameStation Pro is a handy emulation box for 2600, 5200, and 7800 games. You can even throw Mame roms on it. Very useful.
as a child of the 90`s, nothing can beat the feeling you get when you are playing on an OG unmodded retro system on an old CRT TV 😂✌
Yeah but this isn't a modded console. It's an emulated device that outputs HDMI.
@@danerd8978who cares. It’s fun.
Great video. I am glad you did this for them. Not all heroes wear capes. I had no idea I could add more games to the second console. No idea at all. Now I have something to figure out today. Thank you. I appreciate you my friend. Good to see your channel at almost a million subs.
Watching this video, wearing my new Electric Callboy shirt makes me smile. Greetings from Germany and happy Tekkno Tour!
Happy new year MJR!! for you and your awesome Crew!!
I loved discovering your channel! always nice content
Happy new year!!
I love the cartridge slot on the 2600+. There is a great visceral feel and satisfaction with using my original cartridges. The controllers are fully faithful to the originals. It would be nice to access Stella Options but I can live without it. I don't mind the lack of save states because the games are simple. It has a better quality output than my A/V modded 2600 Woody with a retrotink upscaler on a modern TV. Well worth it a lifelong Atari Fan. The Gamestation looks interesting but I think it's going down in Atari history as a step above the @games systems, nothing worth getting too excited about. What Atari needs to do is make a new 7800 controller for use with the 2600+.
New consoles of Atari games been released so many times that its impressive they still can get people to buy these.
Difference is this is actually made by Atari not some third party
Hey man great video waiting patiently for the next pickups video, hope you had good Xmas and happy new year metal fam
Thanks! You too!
I have 75 2600 carts and my original console that I got for Christmas. Still works like a charm, the joysticks and paddle controllers are still flawless despite a lot of abuse. It even looks decent connected to the RF on my somewhat dated 46" Samsung. But getting a really clean image is super appealing. The emulation part always feels like a massive caveat for me. But it looks like this might be a good option.
Thank you for making this video. This was truly excellent.
I remember as a kid (I'm in my early 30s) playing some form of Pitfall on a handheld of some sort & having a blast with it. Seeing games like these finding new life is always amazing.
It’s about time you got around to doing one of these videos🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️🕹️
I love the Electric Callboy shirts!
So many great memories I had with my Atari 2600! Warlords was one of my favorites! I played my 15 yr old nephew in it and he absolutely loved it! 😁💯
Make sure you update the firmware on that GSP, 1.30 unlocks more stuff on it not just SD card specific - experiment with different controllers too on that note.
I have been quite impressed with the 2600+ so far and Atari have been showing footage of a firmware patch that will allow it to load more games which will be very cool.
I wasn’t sure about the Game Station Pro so didn’t pre-order it but now am quite interested in it. It would be great at my holiday home for an allow a good range of games on a modern TV. Also there are heaps of Atari 8-bit games that would be good to play on it as well of course Mame titles.
Frostbite is a must have for any atari system. That's why I looked at the plus, but honestly I am happy just playing emulator versions on my handheld
Atari is before my time, but I have always found enjoyment from their Switch collection releases (Atari 50th and Flashback classics). When they showed the 2600+ I was super excited because I actually wanted to get myself an original console for a while. So glad that this one exists now! Also wish they would release those controllers for modern console use.
for real
where was *this* Atari the last 20-something years? An Atari that put thought and time into stuff and wasn’t just a hivemind of grifters unleashing cryptocurrencies and RCT World on the unsuspecting masses
Thank you for the review of the systems.
I didn’t realize it was that small, looks nice…compact. Always fun watching a younger generation, the response from my kids were not kind when I showed them Atari lol. Was great to see the gamestation also, I’m always tempted but not sure I need it 🤷🏼♂️ Another stellar vid sir, thank you!
Great video and awesome to see the younger generation try these games.
For me after I found the Flashback 50th Anniversary gold mini console could be hacked so I could put with nice box art and every 2600 game, I decided to cancel my 2600+. I do like the idea of the 2600+, but mostly for 7800 and then you need another fire button.
Have you tried the joystick and paddles on the 2600+ on a Flashback? As if the paddles work better I might pick it up.
If I didn't have a gaming PC with Launchbox into my main TV, I probably would have gone for the other device, as its a nice easy to use multiple system emulator, with loads like the gameboy, mega drive and snes emulated.
Great video and fun to watch. Your nephew's & his fiancee take on the Atari Systems is classic! I can say i was already sold on getting the Atari Gamestation Pro before watching this. But this video makes me want to get it that much more!
Glad you enjoyed it!
this seems pretty awesome. thanks for the review!
So apparently the gamestation is using Mame which emulate every consoles in existence.
You can run gameboy advance, super nintendo, nes, genesis, game gear, arcade games on it.
Came for the atari stayed for the electric callboy 😂
We got the moves! 🕺
Hypa hypa my dudes
I feel fortunate having lived through the entire evolution of cartridge console gaming starting with the Atari 2600. Adventure still being an all time favorite.
Really cool to see the Atari 2600+ come out during the digital age. I still use sticks over gamepads most of the time for gaming. It's what I started on. Atari carts are still available and cheaper than 8 and 16 bit console games in a lot of cases. Hopefully people can find clean and workable ones for this.
A leap forward for retro gaming. Makes you wonder what's coming next.
it seems so odd to me that they didn't put scan lines as the default on the 2600+ since clearly the intent was to give you the old school experience.
It seems odd to me that people still want scan lines in the year 2023. They add nothing to the experience.
@@MrRobarino the whole 2600+ is designed to recreate the original experience from the design of the console to the use of original cartridges. Scan lines are a more authentic recreation of the original experience. Also, those games were created and made for CRT's which do look very different in many ways, not the least of which is scan lines. If you were talking about a product who's whole design isn't based on recreating the experience, it would be different.
@@MrRobarinoI disagree. Final Fight on PS3 with its huge bevy of filters and camera angles made the game so darn cool. I love playing arcade mode with soft CRT filters.
yeah I often play consoles on a CRT and I don't mind the screen, but I rarely add scan lines on HD consoles. looks bad most the time.
It is possible to use "some" other controllers on the GSP. (Wired). I also found out you can remap the controls for MAME games with a hex editor on the .cfg files if you don't like how things are laid out. With other controllers I found 2 other buttons you can map as well.
I think I am getting the Gamestation for christmas. Its seems pretty solid, especially since you can add your own roms as well.
Hey man im new fan of yours...!! Excellent job in all your videos...!! I want to ask...maybe you have a review on neo heo hyper 64 i really want to see a review about this keep up the good work!!
You really got me at 9:22
Thanks Ben from Plaion
Great informative review!
Thanks for watching!
Great show!
I have and love my 2600+ and I have the Retron77. In your opinion, would getting the Gamestation be logical? I really want to check it out and have just because but I’m on the fence
The Atari 2600 plus did exactly what I wanted the other mini consoles to do with the functional cart slot and that my arcade versions joystick looks like it'll be great for shooters
always enjoyed your videos Jesus. really enjoying the 'docu' style of videos lately. hehe, cheers and thanks my friend. i love pitfall, hero and demon attack
Glad you like them!
Hi, I was wondering about one thing that I haven't found the answer to. Indy 500 as the "Pass" in the compatability list, but I can't find if that is using the Driving controller, not the paddles. I know that the Retron 77 doesn't support the driving controller. Has Atari gone further than Atgames with this? King Regards
I been subscribed so long that MJR growing the goatee is a new thing
I'm in my 20's but my first gaming experience was actually the atari 2600. I have so many fond memories playing River Raid, Berzerk, Indy 500, Breakout, and a bunch of other classics. I still have that original console!
I have the VCS and the Gamestation Pro; I'll probably get the 2600+ soon. It is a wonderful time to be an Atari fan!!
Does 4 player Video Olympics Pong work? I bought a RetroN 77 hoping to play 4 player pong, but the right port doesn’t read paddles for that particular game.
Loved the 2600 as a kid, nice to see a revival in 2023, certainly something I'd buy for nostalgia factor and for some fun.
Watching my childhood resurrect in the hands of younger audiences is such a trip.
Nostalgia is finally having its day...
Kaboom was my shit! I’m glad you mentioned that not all of the 2600 games work on it, that may affect me getting it.
Very nice review, I wish you'd had actually interviewed Nicole and Will and asked them about their opinions directly - other than that - loads of fun to watch, as always!
See this is why when I ran into you at Retro Game Con back in October, why I was digging for Atari games. Because I was trying to get as many as I could BEFORE the 2600+ came out, knowing that now people would be scrambling to get the old cartridges.
That's a good point - especially 7800 games. The prices for 7800 carts on eBay has sharply increased in the last month or so.
Great comparison idea
Thanks! 👍
greetings from greece. Last year you promised me a 2 hour Christmas Special pick ups video with reggie. Its timeeeeee
Make it happen Jason

Cool video. I obtained a lot of cartridges over the last year because they were cheap. Was going to purchase a refurb original console but when I saw the 2600+ was going to be released I preordered. I also purchase a Hyperkin controller and the paddle controller works great.
Considering how much Atari stuff I already have, I really had been ignoring these. But seeing the cartridge system on modern flat screens recently in other places. Well, I sort of have the itch to get one. Maybe I'll grab both. But probably when I can find a deal on them. Like the used VCS I bought.
Does the GameStation Pro support third-party controllers in any capacity?
Thank you for the zoom in on Nicole's big.....effort playing.
I gotta say when I first started playing a games, I didn’t expect them to be fun at all but when I got the Atari 50 collection for my dad for his birthday, we played a bunch of Atari games and oh my God they are so fun you wouldn’t think they’re fun because of how simple they look and how simple they play but playing Games like combat with my brother was so fun
I didn’t grow up with Atari, but I’ve enjoyed getting this and picking up a bunch of old games for it. I had a couple I adored because of the Evercade carts now I’ve got a large collection!
Which was the small HDMI 2600 ?? Is it able to rip binaries and play it like a modded system would? I have around 50 cartridges for this console... Can it run a harmony cartridge and do the same?
I just remembered in the game Berzerk, you could avoid a shot if it went between your head and torso. Fun times.
Yep! Very tricky to do...or sometimes it would happen accidentally and you were so glad! LOL
They both have pros and cons. Enjoying them both.
Going to see electric callboy in May, couldn’t help but noticing the shirts
Thanks for this video. I’m a huge Atari Fan, I was born in 1972… so, that says enough😊. I have one question, does the 2600+ supports cartridges from different regions? I’m from Holland, so we are using the EU cartridges. Besides that, there is not a lot of supply of old cartridges over here. Therefore I have to import. So is it possible to use different region cartridges? Thx!
I haven't played Atari 2600, but I played game called Activision Classics for PSP, that game had 44 Atari 2600 games and 1 of the games was Pitfall! Cool video.
We bought my in-laws the Atari game station pro. They played the 2600 in college and were so excited to get to replay those classics.
See a lot of weird shovelware crammed into many of these now, I really wish I knew the story behind them. Sometimes they're sort of bad conversions of older games with like a slightly different set of assets. The handhelds I've had with them have quite a few but they're rarely worth playing.
Did you try to see if any other controllers were compatible with the Gamestation Pro?
I feel like the dream console would just be a 2600 with peripherals or all-in-one controllers that just packed as many of the individual 2600 ROMs in there as possible, including Activision and Imagic etc. These always feel a few steps incomplete, but I guess you don't want to make something too good.
Always happy to see people playing tank pong :)
The dip switches on that cart was fun to see.
I know, right?! Pretty trippy and old school right there! 😂
That's for sure.@@MetalJesusRocks
Great for the people who want one, but the Atari 2600+ is definitely not for me. I have 100's of games and a few emulators for the Atari (all versions,) my PC, so why would I need to get one? I lack the room to store any physical games, and, I have no nostalgia for it. Even though I was 7 years old when this first came out in 1977. I never had one. In fact I had never even heard of it back then. The only console I used was a Master System back in 1989, which I played Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on, for about 10 minutes before I had to give it back to the owner. Then, in 2017, I got a broken PS 2, (just to see if I could fix it.) Then in 2018 I got 3 (broken,) PS Vita handhelds and 3 (also broken,) PS Vita TV's (all now fully working.) and they are the only consoles I have ever owned since 1970. I was more into the PC side of things and more enjoyed doing things like Spreadsheets, Music Creation, my dad's taxes and that kind of thing, and fixing radios, tv's, vcr's, and mainly PC's etc. I used to love typing in programmes into my Speccy and CPC 464, and creating music on my Amiga. Anyway, sorry, I do ramble! To those who get one or both, I really do hope you enjoy them!
What kind of couch do you have? Is it comfortable?
Love the channel, but I am wright in thinking there are fewer uploads than there used to be?
I released 66 video in 2023, but I took the last two weeks off to be with family and finish some video games. 👍
Mr. MJ, how does the Retron 77 compare to the Atari 2600 plus? If you had to choose between the 2, which one would you choose?
Looking at their website, it looks like the paddles are bundled with a game. I have a older plug and play one that supports external controllers. Got any recommendations on where to find paddles for it?
I have an AT Games dongle with a bunch of Activision games on it, but I find it hard to play because it comes with a gamepad, not the original, one-button joystick. (Found it on clearance for under $5.)
Both systems seem good to me. I am interested in seeing the new Atari handheld coming out later in the year. I has a gampad, paddle and trackball included.
Nice showcase of Dream Theater's 'Images & Words' record at 3:19
Do these consoles have preloaded games or do you have to buy Atari cartridges for each system?
I like the look of the GameStation (in terms of a plug and play emulation device) and I hope it can use other controllers, and turn the borders off! Looks cool!
It does support other controllers, check out GenXGrownUp's videos on it. And I'm pretty sure the borders can be toggled, I do know that they can even be added for some games using SD.
Points for the Rush shirt.
Great video MJR
Appreciate it 👍
Awesome Rush shirt, your nephew has excelent taste
Hey there, I was looking for that game at 3:35 for so many years. Whats the name of it? Thanks in advance! Nice videos btw.
Laser Blast. It was one of Activision's earlier games.
As a left handed child I had to suffer with the Atari controller. Because of the button placement I was forced to use the controller upside down. Meaning up was down and right was left on the stick. Looks like the modern companies are neglecting lefties just like the classic companies. Sigh. On a positive note, it looks like your nephew is a RUSH fan. One my favorite bands.
Yeah but every arcade stick and pretty much every controller until we went to duel analogue sticks were left handed :P Even the modern controllers are left leaning with the d-pad being controlled with the left and the buttons with the right.
Dude…wtf…I just bought the one on the right (of your thumbnail) on a whim for my dad for Christmas. It’s in my trunk right now 😂 let’s goooo!
