Waterfall Trail | WHITE TANK MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK | Hiking It When Nobody is There!

  • The Waterfall Trail is arguably the most popular destination at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. It attracts large crowds, especially when the waterfall is flowing. On a late afternoon in March, we got the whole place to ourselves and enjoyed peace and solitude at the trail's end, which we hear is a rare thing.

    A world of discovery awaits at White Tank Mountain Regional Park, right outside of Phoenix, AZ. If you are looking for a complete Sonoran Desert experience, you'll find it here. You will see evidence of cultures that lived here hundreds, and into the thousands, of years ago, in the form of petroglyphs. You also have a great chance of spotting wildlife here such as mule deer, rabbits, rattlesnakes, and many more. And of course, you will enjoy many scenic vistas within the beautiful desert chaparral.
    One of the most popular trails in the park is the Waterfall trail. It's an out and back trail, about one mile long (2 miles round trip). The elevation gain is negligible, and a portion of the path is paved, making the trail suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
    On the trail, you will see many excellent examples of petroglyphs, made by the Hohokam culture, with some believed to be 3000 years old!
    The highlight of the trail is a waterfall, located at the very end. You will first pass through some of the white granite and tinajas (tanks) that White Tank Mountain Regional Park is famous for, and eventually, end up at cool pools deep in the shade of high cliffs.
    If you visit at the right time, you may even see water flowing. Don't expect to have your mind blown, however, as the waterfall is often a gentle trickle, but nonetheless a spectacular sight.
    Of course, there are never guarantees that water flows here, so please keep that in mind! Regardless, we would still recommend this hike since there is so much to see and learn.
    There are many interpretive signs that teach you about the history, geology, flora, and fauna of the area.
    This trail is very popular and can be crowded. We'd recommend trying to avoid weekends if possible.
    In the summer months, it may also be uncomfortably hot, which may serve as a deterrent for the crowds, if you can tolerate it.
    We consider this a gem of Phoenix, AZ. The park is amazing, offers camping and many other recreational activities, and is among the finest that the Phoenix area has to offer. Make it a point to visit the next time you are out this way!

    Ugghh Not The ig 😚 again.
    Looks like you caught more of the flowers blooming again. I wonder how long after good rains does it take for the plants to bloom?

      Only ever really observed our ocotillo in our yard and that's not long after a rain that it changes.

    Been going since I was a child, used to not be paved until not super long ago and no rails, imo was better that way. If you regularly hike it, you'll see animal life. Definitely right about the weekends. Take advantage of hot weather when there's less people.

      It's always better when things appear closest to nature without humanity's affect but also nice that those with mobility devices can use the trail as well. This was our first visit to the trail and sadly we've not been able to get back since. Hopefully we can again one day! Thanks for watching our video. We appreciate it. 😊

      The White Tanks are great, and the waterfall trail is just the tip of the iceberg there. Beautiful park. Thanks for watching and for dropping us a comment. Means a lot to us!

    I think those metal tanks were for herding animals they supposed to fill up and hold some water longer

      Im thinking that, and they brought water to it from the washes or the natural tanks. Probably got shot up by bored cowboys in the early 1900s

    Hiked it several times way before the concrete and rails. Hot in the summer you can hear the bees flying overhead going to get a drink.

    Right on, I'm going! It looks like I can take Northern right across town from the Shadow mountain area, then get onto Olive and it takes you to the waterfall parking lot ;)
    I've never explored the White Tank Mountains, it looks really cool. Another great video!

    Crime grade's map shows the whole mountain region is red, as though it isn't safe...? Is it mostly car break-ins since it is a park?

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really good question and your suggestion is the only one I can think of. I wish I knew the answer but to be honest I wasn't aware of the rating until your comment.

      So showing a Hole Region is Red does it show what type of incident occurred? Does that include slip & falls where people Need help being written up as a Crime?

    The mountain behind my house in Phoenix had big rocks with petroglyphs on them and we used to play up there when we were little. We figured teenagers had done them like 10 years before we found them. It’s been 35 years and they were carted off to somewhere a few years ago, so it’s cool we got to see them where they naturally were for thousands of years when we did.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow! That's really awesome! That would be really cool to come across some like that and not know they're there because of a trail. What a memory!

      @@CactusAtlas There was this big bone-colored rock just exposed out of the ground near our palo verde tree fort that was probably caliche, but we used to have heated debates about whether or not it was a dinosaur bone. Good times. 😂
