- In this episode I remove the failed paint jobs from the hull on Stowaway, a Nicholson 32 MK3.
A job that probably needed doing long before now, previous paint jobs had either not be prepared or simply no attention was made to the weather condition and or mixing ratios of the applied paint.
Always good to be entertained by someone else's hard work. Am sure it will all be worthwhile when you get to see the final result.
Great progress on the hull, I like “Sam Sands”! Can’t wait until the next episode.
Wow that's a tightly packed yard, makes things difficult when trying to do work like that next to nicely finished boats.
Give a couple of months and you'll see it full 😁
oooh man, well done for aggresive work 💪 but it does look like new chain plates too. Leaky rust 😬
What a lovely shaped hull.
It's going to be a lot of work, but she will be a graceful swan, when faired and painted. And stronger too.
Step by step. Well done.
@@johnhanson5943 thanks for watching 😎👍
Ahhh memories! I did exactly the same on my boat a number of years ago, got through 2 sanders, and found some pretty heave repair jobs on one side of the hull. Good thing about doing this is you get to know every inch of your hull. What paint will you use afterwards, 2 pack or single? I used a 2 pack primer but run out of funds for a 2 pack top coat so used a single international.
Looks nice there..
Hi Sam. For the sake of peace of mind. Please fit straps to them pole supports. If they slip out your boat is falling over.
Absolutely, I agree with “in love with sailing “ please secure the poles. ❤
I'll check in with the yard 👍
Brilliant! Well done!
nice Sam !
Sam, you aren’t averse to hard work complimented by persistence. Stowaway is going to look really good as the refurb. progresses. Regards, Phil, Suffolk.
Thanks Phil 👍
Very useful Sam although now I’m not sure I want to ever do this on mine lol
Paint over it and go sailing thats what they did with mine. 😆
put new C/plates on internal bulkheads/hull. Watch 2016 ggr prep for nic32. Bon chance
Good onya Sam. I love hard work, I can watch it for hours 😃. Thanks for all the vids, cheers.
Hello Sam , I guess there is nothing that cannot be fixed and revealing issues is the start of any such job. I hope you get the structural and rigging properly checked and sorted if needed before the cosmetics. It is all pretty boring but preparation is everything as you said. I am not an expert but basically cutting corners is not sensible in the long run I would suggest, I am however an engineer and have done plenty of restoring of many things. I try to find good reference material when in uncharted territory, I would suggest you might find some useful tips on a channel called......Boat painting and restoration with Frankie Bushong............He looks like he knows his stuff but isn't up his own arse, really explains all the stages and mostly uses Awlgrip paint. Best of luck.
The rigging was replaced earlier in the year. There is a previous survey highlighting a sound deck and hull. Thanks fot watching 😎
When you come to do the top coat Sam, be sure to allow paint cure time to happen well before the onset of the evening dew point. I unfortunately made that mistake a few weeks ago and had to sand an entire coat back, as I think I must have trapped a layer of moisture that caused the paint to flake off after a few days. Also, I found using a 1cm sponge interface on my DA (also an older Erbauer) very effective for avoiding flat spots near the water line.
Ah thats a massive pain. Will definitly be checking forecast for rain when it comes to painting. 😎
Gosh, all that equipment and consumables would have paid for a soda-blast contractor the whole hull. You'd have got down to glass where needed too.
Good work..
Given the age of the boat and the chain plates being glassed over then you need to really consider replacing them. Stainless needs oxygen otherwise it will corrode badly. Look up issues on pre 1999 Island Packet rigging failures owing to glassed over chain plates
Enjoy your videos
Ah yes im looking forward to the chainplates, i'll inspect the caps this year as easier to get to, the two lowers are buried behind fixed bulkheads. These will be replaced based on condition of the cap plates. Unlike the pre 91 Island packet these are not connected to one another, Cap and lowers are fixed on separate plates. Thanks for watching 😎
On the IP’s all the salon cabinetry has to be removed to access the chain plates….there is a company in Florida that has made and is making a tidy bundle changing out the chainplates. You will swallow hard if you look at photos of some of the corroded plates.
If you are around this Saturday.. I'll show you a much cheaper way of sanding...
Why do I get you confused with Sam Holms?? Lol
I did meet Sam H once at H'penny pier, nice guy awesome boat, yes should be down this weekend
I too would be concerned about the water seeping from the area beneath the chainplate. Is it glassed over inside? I once had u bolt chainplates fail on a Halcyon 27. Sea water had seeped under them at the deck and the hidden through deck part of them had turned to carbon through crevice corrosion. After the first failed, I tapped the others sideways with a hammer and they snapped off. I didn't lose the mast, it was a lower shroud.
Yes glassed over from inside, no movement from top.
Another dumb question. Is the blue bit fibreglass? Do you have to redo the paintwork there too? I’m guessing it’s a different paint if it’s below the waterline.
The blue is an antifouling paint for below the waterline 😎
Brilliant work . .can you do mine lol
No 😆
Let me know if you need a hand.
I’m free Mondays to Wednesday.
60 year od boat = utter disaster in the making
@@SteveJones-gz4vd Me thinks you haven't got a clue what you're talking about! 🫣🤣
@@jonc4752 I've only worked offshore for 30 years , sailed to over 76 countries, yep no clue . be safe fool
She'll definitly have a few issues but hopefully not a disaster 😎
@@samsails9820 HUGE risk, utter crazy to buy a boat of this age
@@SteveJones-gz4vd What in particular is the problem?
Fantastic. I did just the same job on my Sadler this summer. Great progress Sam.
Good work Sam, I feel your pain! Cheers.
Thanks 👍
