Hull preparation for topcoat and a costly mistake

    Really interesting to see how this paint job has gone and she's looking good!! I had a signwriter in Woodbridge in 1988 when Greenwitch was launched at Robertsons. He was fairly elderly even then. Watching him work was fascinating and a real lesson in craftsmanship. Twentytwo years later I had the hull painted and the same guy came back and wrote her name again - still just as good even at his then considerable age!! Very much enjoying your vlogs.

    Topsides look great and the hand-painted names are awesome! The molded line along the sheer is usually called the cove stripe. Be careful with those hasps for the cockpit locker. If you’re working down in there the lid could close shut and lock you in there.

    Well done on getting your topsides painted. One question, in rolling it by hand with foam rollers, what is the finish like, ie. how glossy is it and did you get an orange peel or really smooth finish? I think at some stage you are going to need to get on with restoring all your timber brightwork, and when you do, have you figured out what finish product to use. There are so many options out there in the market place. Everything from the likes of Epiphanes to Silkens Cetol marine, let alone the likes of your more traditional spar marine varnishes.

    • @samsails9820
      @samsails9820 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Gloss came out good, there is a slight orange peel but not much, the amount of thinner used helped I think. The foam rollers work really well I found. Thanks for watching

    Thanks all for watching this episode, i see a number have expressed concerns over the supporting 'posts' as being unsafe. This is a traditional means of shoring a boat, many boatyards and marinas use posts some with supporting timbers some without. There is a small risk of the posts being accidentally knocked out of place and the boat falling however this is a very rare and unfortuante occurance. Again appreciate all concerns made. I am on the lookout for a cradle so if anyone has one they no longer need please feel free to contact me on samsails@yahoo.com 😊

    Bloody hard work for sure, but in the long run the results will be worth it. Just one comment though re how your boat is supported. A bunch of essentially logs is hardly a safe method of support when on the hard. I honestly cannot say I have ever seen such an unsafe method of holding a boat up.

    • @samsails9820
      @samsails9820 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, it is hard but very satifying on tne finish. Shoring posts have been used for many years in the yard, there isn't a risk of the boat tipping unless they are are physically removed. Thanks for watching 😎

    At some stage I am looking at repainting the topsides of my boat (1974 Swanson 30). I have been looking into the new paint by International, Toplac Plus. The manufacturers say you can roll it and don’t need to tip off and it should give a finish close to that of a spray finish. As an experiment , when I recently had the boat out on the hard for a scrub off, sand and antifoul, I masked up and re-instated the bootstrap line. So how did this come out. From 10 ft away it looks great, close up it appears very orange peel like. Bear in mind, I did paint over old antifoul which had been sanded back and I only applied one coat of primer and didn’t sand this back. I think I am going to have try the paint system out on a piece of smooth malamine to see if I can get a better finish result, as the alternative is to have the topsides sprayed but the cost naturally will be far higher than if I paint the boat myself. Hence, I will be interested to see how your boat comes out. So far, from my observations, asides Mads (Sail Life) who painted his boat, Athena using Perfection pro and then cut and polished it afterwards, most roll and tip paint jobs do seem to end up with an orange peel finish. Good luck Sam.
