  • Hi Guys
    Here is my compaison of two types of roof shades, the 2 piece reflective shade from Haloblk and the one piece original Tesla shade. Both shades offer some relief from the heat but the reflective blockout shades are best at rejecting heat. The Tesla shade retains some of the view but iffers very little heat rejection. This video has a cabin temp test at the end so make sure you watch until the end to see how effective the shades are. The Tesla shade made no difference so I didnt include that test in the video. Its not a very scientific test but demonstrates the benefit anyway. This comparison video is also useful for the Model 3 (not highland) as the shades are almost identical except Tesla genuine shade for the model 3 is one piece.

    I don't own a Tesla, doubt id ever get one bc Elon, and I just wanted to see how dark the roof glass was tinted, but boy did I learn something useful today. thanks for your time and explanation, great video. I saw the Tesla shade online and immediately knew it was bs since it wasn't solid and kinda assumed it would sag in the middle bc of the lack of support.

      Hi Rex. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I try and include a lesson in every video I do and keep things balanced, even for product reviews. I was a technical trainer for many years and can't break the habit. As far as owning a Tesla goes, I would never tell people what car they should own as its a personal preference, petrol, EV, Tesla or non-Tesla. Elon barely makes the news outside of the US. The media over there have an obsession with him. I definitely didn't buy a Tesla because of Elon. When I got my first Tesla I didnt even know much about him. The trouble is Tesla do the EV thing so much better than everyone else which offsets some of Elon's weirdness. They offer the best value for money by a very big margin. Its a shame that the US built cars are not as well built as the Shanghai cars. I've owned a 3 and now a Y. No panel gaps to be found and nothing rattling loose. Just a great overall ownership experience. We dont have an many choices for Evs here in Australia though. The new Chevy EVs look pretty good.

    Thank you for taking the time to do this review. I have the Haloblk shade sitting in the box and been delaying installing it since hasn't been too hot here. The glass roof is nice, however I think I am ready now to give the roof shade a go and your instructions are very helpful.

    Thanks Matt for posting this review, great job! I've now been using the Haloblk one on my Model Y for about 5 or 6 weeks now and you can definitely notice the temperature (and light) difference. Not substantial as it still lets some heat through, but not as much as without it. Initially I noticed a bit of creaking from the front clips but this went away after a few days, must have needed some time to settle into place. Very happy with them!

      That’s great and thanks John. I haven’t noticed any creaking or rattling. Any of this type of roof shade would have the same issue. I’m doing a big drive on Thursday and it’s predicted to be close to 40degC so I might fit them and see if I get a creak or rattle.

      I totally agree with you Tom! I love the different style. My favourite is their floor mats.

      @@notinthemanual Thanks for your time and honest input. I just ordered their spoiler (and returned an ABS plastic one which had terrible fitment) based on your recommendation and plan to order the mirror covers as well. Picked up a new sun shade on eBay for $25 yesterday too😀.

    I have the Tesla roof shades for my Model 3. I have had them for almost 2 years now and to be honest they aren't necessary. I fit them during summer months and remove them from autumn onwards. If anything it just takes the edge off and makes it slightly more comfortable during long road trips. The much bigger issue is the front windshield, which is so massive that it lets in a lot of heat - especially if you are in the passenger seat. I will never purchase reflective shades as the glass roof is a selling point of the car, it just isn't the same with the roof covered. I guess if I lived in a very hot climate (i.e. north QLD) and the car was outside a lot, then I would consider having a reflective shade. This video has reminded me that it is almost time to remove the roof shades! :)

      I agree. I keep the roof shades as a last resort only. I use the front window shades when parked and that is normally enough. This is definitely an overhyped issue.

      @@notinthemanual Not sure which windshield shade you have, but I purchased a fitted one (I will have to look up the brand, but it was an Australian company) and it is fantastic. If only we could legally tint the front window a bit here like in the US - I get really really hot in the passenger seat. When my wife is driving I have to wear breathable clothing and have the vent directed right at me! The cooled seats sure would be nice.....

      Your roof shade must be mesh with no reflective coating.
      Genuine model y shade is so badly designed with sag in the middle.

      @@catpiano1 Yes I have the genuine Model 3 Tesla roof shade (mesh).

    These things rattle. Why on earth doesn't Tesla put a heat rejection silver coating like Kia?

    • @notinthemanual
      @notinthemanual  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mine don’t rattle but I haven’t used them much. I don’t think the glass roof is a big deal and is a bit overblown. After 10 mins of driving with air flow over the glass it cools off. I still agree Tesla could do a better job. You would think that they would understand that you need to reflect the heat and not absorb it.
