Fix ANY Dented Dust Cap WITH A BAG! Any Size

  • Hello everyone, this is the absolute best method to un-pop a pressed in center dome whether it is a dust cap, tweeter or on a subwoofer.
    This will work for you given that your dust cap/tweeter is capable of physically popping back up, an exception would be if you have a vintage speaker with the old-school thin cardboard type dust cap which sometimes stay permanently wrinkled depending on the material.

    For paper dust caps, just get a dental pick kit. Poke hole in the center of the dust cap, use the dental hook to reshape the cone. Work the small lines that formed while it was creased, take your time use magnifying glasses if possible so you can use the tip of the dental pick to massage crease lines out. Then work your way around in a dizzy wheel pattern. Let it sit for a few minutes then use quality nail polish with its own brush to put a dot in the pick hole. Practice making dots with a brush on the paper plate etc, then with just a quick dot of polish black in most cases it will fill and seal the dental pick hole making it sealed again. Helps to have the speaker standing up while working the cap and then helps to lay the speaker flat on its back when you seal the dental pick hole.NOTE* ferrofluid-filled tweeter will not drip out of it* If you are concerned complete the process with the speaker laying on its back start to finish and apply a second coat of nail polish if needed.

    to fix "vintage" silk or cardboard dust caps you have to make them a bit wet (like a couple touches with a sponge) and then you use the vacuum method (to restore the original shape) and you don't even have to touch the cap itself, if your vac is decent enough that is.

      @@Rjlonergan Glad to know, I discovered this method accidentally (didn't even know about the vacuum trick even back then) it was after some house warming party we had at some friend's place and he asked me to bring the trusty ol' AIWA nsx which in itself is not a hi-fi by a long shot but i loved that thing. Long story short some drunk girl pushed the dustcap all the way in and some other dude dropped some ranch on the speaker itself, come next morning and i find myself wiping the speaker with a slightly damp rag and i noticed it made the cap pliable enough then i just put 1 and 1 together and figured out that the vacuum nozzle was about the right size to fit around the cap and voila. I've fixed 20 or so old speaker sets using this method and it hasn't failed me yet.

    I tired tape, vaccum, heat, command strips, even a hole and bent paperclip..nothing worked because caps were hard plastic. If you need a replacement woofer dust cover for Rockit 5 (my dust caps were pushed in). I got an exact dust cover replacement at SpeakerWorks.com part #DCPL112 (1.5" poly black). Also used clear glue from Amazon (Speaker Repair Adhesive, Foam Edge, Spider, High Strength, Clear, MI-3035) - these are a perfect fit for replacing damaged Rockit 5 dust caps..looks exactly like original. Remove old cap by gently sliding fingernail (or a guitar pick) around dustcap edge until you get it to separate...I then used a needle nose pliers to pull off dustcap carefully. Apply clear glue around ring where dust cap will sit, place cap, use something to hold edge down or an hour or so (I used a 1 - 1/16 impact socket from my tools as it fits perfectly on the edge of the cap). .

    For the tweeters, in most cases, you'll need to actually remove the front of the chassis, to get to the back of the tweeter, then with great care, disassemble it and push the dome back out.

  • @hearmenow909
    @hearmenow909 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can do it with just sticky tape, just make a ring with the tape and touch the tweeter gently with the tape so it sticks lightly and pulls the tweeter dome back into shape. Depending on the material you might need some gorilla tape rather than standard sticky tape.

      The best way is to use a modified end on a vacuum cleaner ( with variable speed so it can be slowed right down ) place the end of the vacuum cleaner tube over the dust cap and it will suck the dent out .. this method also works with tweeter domes ... but be very careful!!

    • @terryhartness4771

      no. that's not a cone. It is only a dust cover that is popped in

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A dented dust cap may affect dispersion of mid or higher frequencies. Usually it won’t be noticeable on a woofer as it doesn’t play frequencies that high. It would matter on a tweeter.
      Then again a lot of people can’t tell much of a difference, so it depends how much you analyse the sounds of things .
      It may matter mostly for the look of the speakers in a lot of cases

    Do away with the plastic bag, the straw n the inhaling if dust..i'd just only use the tape, slowly n carefully stick a tape in the dented area n gradually pull it upward as you peel the tape off.. But b careful not to tape any part of the outer cone because usually they are made of some sort of paper n they would easily peel off with the tape.. Cheers! Ps pls re make a video if it i dont want no credit :)
