I've been a computer geek since 1979. The thought of just replicating yourself in a virtual world where you could be almost anything is about the most boring thing I can think of for VR. In a virtual world, I don't want to be what I really am, I want to be what I can't be in the real world. Be a little more creative. The ancient Egyptians dreamed that after death they could be anything. We could technically achieve that within our lives. And all Meta can think of is to scan our real bodies? I'm already enough "myself" in real life. I don't have to be that in the virtual world as well.

How is that a remotly decent user experience compared to whats already here ? 😂 I can already use ZERO hands and say.... "hey ***, send, .... your txt .... to mom". How's a wrist band that tracks microreactions more pleasant to use than just typing? You'll have to employ your cognitive/neurological movement focus while watching that virtual display anyway, so wheather you "type" into thin air while looking at a virtual display or typing on a flat surface while looking at that surface, it doesn't really give you more capability - it just sounds futuristic, but very limited usecase really. I can see how this is relevant to people who are paralized in their fingers but not their wrist. my guess would be that that is less than a fraction of a permille of people alive.

    • @justtiredthings
      @justtiredthings ปีที่แล้ว

@@rpals5412 I mean, you were mixing comparisons, actually.
Idk about the keyboard and palm idea, but it's pretty obvious that if someone can nail intuitive text input on a device like this with a comfortable wearable display that it will be mega-useful. It's not any one capability or any single instance of a few saved seconds slightly greater comfort individually, it's all of those capabilities and instances of saved time and comfort put together--all day everyday. It will add up, a lot. I remember before I got a smartphone it seemed only a little useful--after all, I could take my laptop places, right? Except my laptop didn't have internet, except my laptop had to be sitting on a surface to be used, except my laptop required wearing a backpack, except my laptop couldn't be put on a dash or bike handlebars for directions, except it was difficult to use my laptop remotely comfortably in bed or on a sofa, except I couldn't walk around playing a podcast or music with my laptop stowed in my pocket.
The leap to wearable computing is similar--it's not that you can't do most of the same things with the old tech, it's that you can do them much better with the new form factor/interface. And some things you wouldn't have done before because they were too unwieldy or slow, you can easily do now.
      Examples:
      1) You're biking. It's winter. You're wearing thick gloves. Instead of stopping your bike, taking off your gloves, entering your phone's PIN, and opening up your media player to switch your music playlist, you make a couple micro-gestures without even lifting your hand from the handlebar.
      2) You're walking through a university on your way to your next class. You have an important and kind of embarrassing text you need to send, but you also don't have time to stop and pull your phone out, and you need to watch where you're going. So instead you type out your text with imperceptible chorded "taps" as you're walking, on a small, semi-transparent virtual display that takes up a lot less of your vision than staring down at your phone would. The "taps" don't even have to be against a surface, and your arms can swing with your gait as they normally would--the taps are just little twitches of movement intention.
      3) You're hitting it off with someone at a party, but it's about time to leave. Instead of breaking gaze and awkwardly fumbling with one another's phones to exchange numbers, you say your goodbyes gracefully while making a few quick micro-gestures to pop up a contact sharing request on their virtual display.
      4) literally, not getting upper cross, cubital tunnel, and carpal tunnel from the repetitive stress and position-locking of touchscreens and keyboards
      5) all the time you'll save in a year not pulling out your phone every time you need to do anything digital (5 seconds 30 times a day is 15 hours a year)
      6) not having your device screens and input visible to the world around you
      7) not having to wash chicken wing sauce or engine grease or whatever off your hands just to skip backward in the movie you're watching or the podcast you're listening to
      8) pausing, rewinding, and skipping forward on a youtube first aid or construction video while your hands are occupied helping someone in need or fitting parts together
      9) quickly googling product reviews or normal prices or multi-level marketing schemes or LinkedIn profiles, etc. without even revealing you're doing so when it seems like someone is trying to con you
      10) not dropping your phone face-down on the sidewalk every 2 years
      11) dialing an emergency service or trusted person while you're being held at gunpoint
      etc., etc.

@@justtiredthings Really appreciate the long message :) Either your are a Meta employee or shareholder 😂 - or just the most dedicated youtube commentor....... hmmmm ;)
I see your point(s). And I already solve most of these usecases with ------ assistant. Voice commands gets you very far, and they are getting even better with support for reading notifications and even replying to them (and soon we are getting chatGPT with it). I am not saying that this is the final uber most perfect interface. I'd imagine direct brain activity reading would be more powerful and convenient. However it seems like meta is stuck somehwere inbetween, in a useless void. They are demoing a wristband that detects micro muscle nerual activity and uses that as device input - however, it's just a fake/staged demo - and these kinds of demos for the exact same thing have existed for a decade on kickstarter.... Meta aren't any further than a conceptual demo reallly. But nevertheless, my point is still that this idea of doing micro muscle hand gestures to control a interface in your head set display is just rediculous at this point in time... No ones is gonna want to do that, that is my absolute set in stone belif. I'm sure that's gonna change - 15 years from now, when this headset fits inside a contact lens, and the micro gesture reading comes directly from your brain and not from your toes and fingers movement. But meta's bet on this inbetween phase is just hilarious to me. The board members in meta's ability to ignore criticism and to be stubbon about an idea even though all sharehodlers are sellling and exiting, is not just arrogant, it's dangerours - and it might be their fall.
I could be wrong obviously, but I don't think I am. And if I am, I will absolutly admint it, and give HUGE credits to Meta for being stubbon when everyone else was laughin and booing. Time will show 🙂

One bottleneck is computing power and the other is battery. I am not sure with battery development but computing power will continue to increase and requires less power. No one can tell how fast technology will progress in the future.

I hate Zuck, and I absolutely do not trust Meta with this tech, but the tech itself is awesome and absolutely what we're headed toward, in some version or another. Whether they can actually financially hold out or gain back enough trust to succeed (they shouldn't--stop investing any trust in Meta) are definitely open questions, but Zuck isn't wrong to recognize AR/VR as the future.
