    No problem, that’s the point of the ending, it’s expected David to die. The moment he put sandevistan, he already knew the consequences and he accepted, because he didn’t really have much other option to survive differently. People below in the Night City never survive nor live happily and longer, live fast, die young. David got what he wanted, letting Lucy to fulfill her dream🥲

    All right a few things to point out for this episode
    - Adam Smashers video game VA reprises his role here
    - the song that was played at the end was "I really want to stay at your house"
    - After the anime released the game got an update that allows the main character to obtain David's jacket and Becca's gun
    - this anime explains why there was a drink named after David in the game when it released which is incredible foreshadowing

    I think it is a fantastic ending because it really captures the themes of the characters and the world itself. David was probably doomed starting from episode 2, but was definitely completely done after episode 6 where he took the mantle from Maine (who was as much a destructive influence as he was a positive one). The problem for David was many full, but most of all it was that his impatience and need to keep his superiority (so as to never be like he was against that Arasaka brat) meant he could never ride that edge. His realization and admittance that the doc had been right about him (before jumping in for the last hurrah) was a great character moment. I honestly think he is an extremely well done tragic character, as many times it is hard to separate whether it was his personality flaws or circumstances that led him down each step on his path to destruction.
    Other characters had their moments too. Rebecca finally died doing the same thing she did most of the show (it is interesting to note that Dorio, Maine, David, and Kiwi save her during the show and none of them survive)...that is being ride or die...but it is actually pretty refreshing seeing the die part of that actually happen for once.
    And even Adam Smasher coming in and wrecking everyone is a perfect encapsulation of this world. He is a projection of Arasoka's power, and quite frankly even with fancy toys David is not a match for that power. I particularly liked the first activation of his Sandevistan, it was so lowkey (and behind David) that David didn't even realize that he had it, but it is an immediate signal to the audience that this guy even has David's ace up his sleeve and that likely means the end.
    If your looking for happy endings this is not the place. Though I do think it is happier than some believe, you just have to take the little victories in the context of the world. I think a great example of this is David successfully stopping Smasher from killing Falco and Lucy before getting absolutely wrecked.

    • @SenseofNoneYT
      @SenseofNoneYT ปีที่แล้ว +5

      One could argue he was doomed in the 1st episode where he asked to install the Sandevistan literally ripped off of a dead cyberpsycho. In Night City, it's either tragic or bittersweet. Lucy got to the moon but it was missing something crucial to her.

    That was the point of this story. It was meant to be predictable. David's whole story was about him not having a dream of his own. That is why he carries over other people's dreams. Every other character in this series shares the same ending where you live fast and dies young because in the end, the corporation will always win in the Cyberpunk world and that is the genre's theme. The whole old net thing was just to tell Lucy's origin story. They can't possibly fit the entire thing in a 10 episodes series because the series is meant to tell about David's journey to becoming one of the Night City's Legends. In the new update, there's one last story about Falco and Lucy in the game. Also, in the game, they stated that woman are less likely to get cyberpsyscosis compared to men.

  • @SenseofNoneYT
    @SenseofNoneYT ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Lucy's lines like "You installed it. I knew you would." and "But you never had to save me. All I ever wanted was for you to live." pretty much sums up her line of thought here and before. She knew David was doomed the moment he gets even slightly mixed up with Arasaka. He's incapable of standing back when he knows he can help. Just as he tried to do for Maine.
    That's why she erased his tracks and protected him without telling him. He'd jump right into the fray. Lucy had a better chance just secretly keeping Arasaka off of David because they might just give up on David at some point. Remember, Lucy did manage to run away from Arasaka herself once before. Just that this time, she was protecting someone else. "I can't be afraid for myself anymore."
    This show was a plane you know was going to crash but know you can't do anything to stop it. And honestly, it's pretty true to the theme that they tell stories of characters that often feel insignificant to the ever-moving Night City. David thought he was special but nope. Another day, another dreamer getting swallowed whole. Adam Smasher was literally there to humble the whole crew. They're not that special after all.

    I think it's quite hard to write a main character in the Cyberpunk world that everyone knows is gonna die.
    In the game there is a bar called the After Life that sells drink with the name of legendary people, David's name was one of the drinks even before the anime came out. (You've probably heard about this 100× already)
    I think they made it obvious that David was gonna die from the beginning because the anime was made for the fans, lucky for them the anime made Cyberpunk shoot up in popularity all over again even with it's flaw and issues people had with it. I don't think Cyberpunk would be where it is rn without the show bringing in a bunch of new people.
    I think they done what they set out to do, make an anime that fits perfectly into the Cyberpunk universe, that feels like it was stripped right from the game. They still ended up giving us entertaining and tragic characters, even though we know the world wouldn't allow most of them a happy ending.
    It advertised the game, developed the world and showed that more stories can be told set in night city.
    Loved your reaction and loved this anime~ keep up the amazing work!!!!

      I think you're right - you have to give time for some shows and when you keep up a fast pace, you tend to miss stuff and don't realize things that are there for the viewer to find out. That's a feature of a good show for me - storytelling that doesn't think you're stupid and incapable to think for yourself.
      For me, the more I kept thinking about the show and it's themes even after watching it, the better it got. Another mark of a great show. Edgerunners manages to build great characters and make the viewer care for them in just a few episodes. Meanwhile, people are watching hours upon hours of e.g. Disney Star Wars and not getting a half of what this show delivers in minutes...

    At the end of Edgerunners the only thing I mourned was the lost potential, I think that THAT scene in episode 8 really blundered the story's potential. If they went about it just a little differently this could have been a 10/10 master piece. If they had Lucy open up a bit and brought David back some wat to his senses. Or even If there was just some attempt for them to try and have a better life together, and then the shit hit the fan, and everything played out as it did, I would have been satisfied. But.....);
    I've heard the addiction argument, but even that doesn't hold up well, It wasn't clearly enough portrayed. If it was, I would have not had any problem with it, because then that would have been a key point of conflict between David and every other character that literally told him to stop. But instead all we got was every one telling him to stop and even asking why, and David responding with some lack luster BS reasons, and then every other character just letting him go on his suicide run.
    I'm especially confused by Lucy's response of refusing to tell David anything or to not compromise when David asks her to come back so they that they could "turn back the clock". She had the options to either compromise and/or to convince David to stop, or to let him kill himself. If this isn't a clear sign of things that don't make sense just happening for the sake of the plot then I don't know what is.
    Any way, sorry for the rant. This show really Hurt me and I just needed to get this out there.

    A really good show that coulda been a really great one. I think the plot was mostly clean and had its themes of addiction and tragedy shine to the end. Carson is right imo, the show ended with style over substance in a way that leaves you wanting way more substance from the world the LOOKS crazy cool. It even hurts the characters and robs them of some possibly really emotional scenes. 2 or 3 more episodes coulda pushed this show over the EDGE(runners).

    Yeah I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't cry. My buddy I binged it with did.
    It's good to know I wasn't the only one who expected the outcome and was prepared for it. Many others like my friend were holding onto some hope that David would live and go to the moon with Lucy. Ofc anime is no stranger to falsely teasing a character death, but for this one, I didn't really see it ending any other way. If anything, Rebecca was the character I had hope for and could see going either way. Her death actually affected me lol.

  • @arttuluttinen

    I was never very invested in David, who was a fairly bland protagonist, but instead the characters around him and the world itself. For me the only surprising death was Rebecca's, but that lack of surprise didn't hurt my enjoyment of how the story was told. I think there's a limit to how often you can tell this kind of story in this medium and if a sequel was made it could not have the same approach (just as Cyberpunk 2077's sequel can't do the same kind of linear downward spiral and expect it to work).
