- This is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners episodes 9 and 10 . Lucy's captors learn about her secret mission and dark past. David and his team head out to complete Faraday's job but realize that something is off. On the edge of cyberpsychosis but determined to save Lucy, David storms into Night City as Arasaka plots to deploy their ultimate lethal weapon.

there are not season 2 but the rest of the series takes place in the video game Cyberpunk 2077.

The saddest thing is, Lucy had told David her dream of going to the moon as to her Night City was a prison she wanted to escape. However, David didn't realize that when they started dating that Lucy's dream had shifted to wanting to simply be together, it's why whenever they kiss you see the moon in the background, David had become Lucy's "escape", her moon. David thought she still literally wanted to go to the moon and didn't value himself enough to think anything else, always living for other people's dreams.

Good point. He even told Lucy that "Maine and his mom... had plans for him... left him things to do" back in ep.8. His inevitable "downfall" is that he was in a constant state of living for other people's dreams like you stated.
Lucy talking about the moon was only a metaphor about the escape from Night City or the reality because the moon in Cyberpunk 2077 is a different world for super riches(think about a one-way ticket to the moon costs 250k eddies=500,000$). But David took it literally, and that's what this tragedy about. Lucy's dream became protecting David at all cost rather than escaping from the reality in later episodes, but David didn't listen. David is character who constantly having trouble communicating with his loved ones and sharing their wishes or fears.

well here the thing... Adam Smasher was injured to the point of him essentially being a head in a jar. In the Cyberpunk Red rule book it states that if you loose an arm and get it replaced it doesn't contribute towards cyberpsychosis as it make you compete again ... so possibly his full conversion viewed by Adams subconscious being restored so not contributing to his psychosis.
@@Gantali9305 And there are other psychological factors in for Adam. Yeah, the shock was a bit less as he got full turned all at once instead of peacemeal. And he was a psycho before it all already, hating humanity in general, so he felt more like being in his natural body when he was full metal. But yeah, what should we expect from a guy whose contract stipulates that there has to be collateral casualities in his missions?

It’s not that Adam isn’t a Cyberpsycho, he’s simply a functioning Cyberpsycho. The reason Adam doesn’t go insane like every other Cyberpsycho is because one of the main causes of Cyberpsychosis is trauma of losing people you care about or love. Adam on the other hand has no trauma to take him over as he has no one he cares about, in fact Adam hates all of humanity and enjoys murdering people for fun and he uses cyberpsychosis to brutally murder people when he wants to with the exception of not harming anyone at Arasaka since Adam owes them a life debt. Even before Adam was turned into a Cyborg he was already a psycho who murdered countless people. Besides being a Cyberpsycho, Adam was in the military at one point in his life and he’s a well known legend that almost NO ONE can top off.
Edit: BTW, it’s confirmed by CDPR there won’t be a season 2 for Edgerunners, if you want more of Cyberpunk then I highly recommend playing Cyberpunk 2077 or at least read some of the comics for Cyberpunk 2077.
He is like a dark version of Robocop.
In the original tabletop he was a walking TPK (Total Party Kill). If the players would get too murder-hobo-y, the DM could say that Arisaka has dispatched Adam Smasher to deal with them. Smasher was so OP that he would then slaughter the party.
MaxTac also has functional cyberpsychos too. Just goes to show that almost every “elite” in Night City probably has some level of psychosis that they’re dealing with
Literally Built Different
I've always just assumed he didn't suffer from fits of psychosis because he is completely soulless and can't relate to human beings at all. Technically, he really is a completely different lifeform.
Rebecca was ride or die, one of the closest friends David could have save for Lucy. A masterful stand alone season of tv.
I think it’s better to call it a Miniseries since there are no plans for a season two
kinda ironic that CDPR at first was not too keen on the "loli" sayingf that it din't fit their vision of the setting.
But the Animators where like "Nope, the Loli is essential".
Rebecca then became one of the most beloved characters in everyone's eyes.
She had romantic feelings toward David but he was more with Lucy than anything and as long as she seen David happy she was happy
As Lucy says, you dont get remembered for how you lived, you are remembered by how you die. Ironic considering the main way Legends get remembered in Night City is through The Afterlife, a bar where they have drinks themed after them - The David Martinez is a drink offered there.

Adam Smasher showing up and kicking ass is gonna feel a bit random if you ONLY watch the show and don't pay enough attention but for people that played 2077 and especially the TTRPG, Smasher being called in meant it was game over for David. The fact that Falco and Lucy actually managed to get away is the best case near impossible scenario
Yep very true, as someone who's played 2077 as soon as they showed Adam Smasher was getting involved i was like "Well fuck, most of them, if not all of them, are gonna die at this point." That realization hit me harder then a sack of bricks.
I never played the game, but when they started talking about his legend I thought "oh he's definitely a boss in the game." So when he got called in, I knew "oh crap, Smasher can't die, this is a prequel, he has to still be alive for the events of the game. Best case scenario, everybody gets out barely alive"
I only watched the show and honestly I don't understand how Adam Smasher kicking ass seems random. for me it was totally within range of expectations. If not why would Doc even mention the name previously

I'd like to say this is the quintessential Cyberpunk story. In Cyberpunk, powerful player characters can't save the world, but with effort they can save themselves (or, failing that, those close to them).
Also my favorite line:
Faraday: Adam Smasher hurry! Go on, kill the boy!
Adam Smasher: **Who the **_fuck_** are you!?**
That line had me rolling. Smasher is like "Who is this whiny pissant trying to tell me what to do?"
Oh boy, she was doing her best to hold those tears back.
Better woman than me, lol. I’ve seen the show and like ten of these reactions and I tear up every time. Not quite ugly cry like I did on my first viewing, but my eyes rained.
@@llynam14 I couldn't hold mine back either. I didn't ugly cry though, because episode 1 and 6 kind of prepared me for the worst.
The one show that made me ugly cry recently was invincible. I was expecting nothing but an interesting plot and violence and then: "You, dad. I'd still have you."

Adam Smasher was a soldier who got turned into ground meat by a missile. What was left of him was recovered by Arasaka and they offered to turn him into a cyborg in exchange for lifelong service as their personal killing machine. Since Smasher was sort of already an evil psychopath, he happily accepted, and it may have been essential to how he’s able to handle all that chrome.
By 2023 Smasher was still passable as a human (even more so than a Maelstrom gang member). But by 2076, advancements in Arasaka innovation, Adam’s capacity for handling cyberware, and a profound dislike of human “meat” eventually led him to look much more monstrous and be much more efficient at his job.
So the Smasher Johnny faced is the weaker version?

And that is the point, Arasaka keeps him allways on top tier for current tech constantly upgrading

Adam smasher is the legend of legends in the Cyberpunk universe. He technically is a cyberpsycho but just very high functioning. Probably due to just already being a psycho
And...he's only ever lost to ONE person. Morgan Blackhand. Smasher is an absolute psychopath...and he enjoys every second of it. He literally thinks that 'meat' aka flesh is weak and pathetic. He LIKES being a cyborg. That's HIS dream. Well, that and causing max casualties everywhere he goes. Gotta have side hobbies, right?

@@GeraltOfArabia I guess technically a stalemate. They both got blown up by a nuke, if I understand correctly. What I've read is that the fight on the top of Arasaka Tower was actually between Smasher and Blackhand, not Smasher and Johnny. Johnny's memory was altered while he was in Mikoshi, probably mixed with the construct of Blackhand. It's also worth noting that Johnny had a massive ego and always wanted to be the center of attention, which is something we can see demonstrated by how well he fights in his flashbacks compared to how V fights even when she has the very gun he used to use.
Fun fact- Morgan Blackhand was the character that Mike Pondsmith played as back in the 80's, and he eventually wrote that character and the missions his table went on into the official lore. Alt Cunningham was his wife's character.

Part of cyberpsychosis is the dysmorphia of having parts of your body replaced amplify your existing traumas. Adam hated his flesh anyway so going full Borg probably made him *more* functional.
If it makes you feel better, when this show came out, the game immediately saw a huge spike in people replaying the mission where you kill Adam Smasher. And most of them were doing it with Becca's guns, which were added into the game in the update that accompanied the release of this show.
True that, I fought Smasher with her gun and a shitty sandevistan and Lucy's monowire.
Still I wonder if they made a construct out of David, I mean Adam did kill him and all but strangely enough there's one of the endings where you can talk to Jackie's construct despite Arasaka getting his body well after his passing. Now I think it'd be more accurate to say they used Soul Killer on him and got what little was left of his feelings/thoughts at the time of his death, namely V, Misty and "getting into the big leagues" but still.
That said unlike him David died from a headshot so there's no way his brain's intact, not to mention the cyberpsychosis he was going through so I'd wager it's rather unlikely but not necessarily impossible... Welp for his sake I hope I'm wrong but can't help but wonder.

Just for Context there is a way to Cure Cyberpsychosis.
Mike Pondsmith, the guy who created Cyberpunk has said that cyberpsychosis can be cured by love.
It's Human connection that helps a person recover from it and love is the strongest form of connection.
That is why David is this resistant, his Love for Lucy litteraly keeps him sane.
Bingo, as you can see by how she completely brings him back from the dark with the mid air kiss. And he doesn't tweak again till his death.
The only reason I don’t feel depressed from this ending is because David never had any real dreams or hopes for himself, but he did hope to make Lucy’s dream come true, to get out of the hellhole that is Night City and make it to the moon.
That is the only reason why I say David did not die in vain or waist his life, he fought for love.😢

Yeah I feel like a lot of people try to find the silver lining in the ending but there really isn't one. If anything, Lucy going to the moon adds insult to injury bc we see how sad and alone she is traversing the moon totally alone with only David's memory to keep her company. At the end I was 50/50 expecting her to be like "Thanks for taking me to the moon, David. But now I want to be with you." and pull her helmet off.

@Danish Green I have been in a similar situation in real life myself. I do not believe that is what the show is trying to convey. Lucy is strong and she will live for the both of them. It’s why she is feeling the sun (something that David enjoyed about the brain simulation). It is quite literally a metaphor for being able to move on and enjoy happiness.
Because of this show the game's sales went up and player counts soaring, all with a vendetta against Adam Smasher 😂 Adam in game is probably like Thanos

Ah yes, there's that lovely pain and depression again. I'm surprised you could hold your tears in Kacee, I bawled the first time I watched this haha and cried again watching it with you guys. I agree about the soundtrack being amazing. I also loved how they played "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" in the second and then last episode. Although, that did make it so I haven't been able to listen that song again as of now, because it makes me sad haha. Even with how depressing this ending was, I still loved the show. Thanks for reactng to this amazing series guys!
David was always living for others, his mother, his crew, Lucy... so for him to die for others shouldve been expected but it still hurts.
Lucy was always dreaming of making a home away from Arasaka but in the end David was her true home.

This show perfectly make you feel part of the cyberpunk world. Its pointless trying to be a good person in this world. And as Lucy says, you dont get remembered for how you lived, you are remembered by how you die. It was also a big concept behind the game where a few endings have you just die.
Most people in this world wont make it out alive. Lucy was one of the lucky ones.
Watching yall during the montage saying how sad you are... knowing what the last scene is going to bring. This show did it. It made us feel empty. IMO thats the mark of a good show.
Cyberpunk is what the genre is called. It's not just an aesthetic. :)
The reason why the show was so short is that this is exactly how a 3-5 hour game of Cyberpunk would go. The tabletop game has been going on for almost 40 years so all the lore is contained in those books. Adam Smasher is a very well-known character who serves as one of the major villains and pretty much everything that happens in the show happens the way it does in the books. To me, it seems a lot like if they continued this show that it would be an anthology series. It was never really about David and Lucy as much as it was about the setting of the world. Everyone dies because the world is extremely lethal. And, to quote the creator of Cyberpunk, Mike Pondsmith, "there are no happy endings in Cyberpunk...Cyberpunk isn't about saving the world, it's about saving yourself."
Adam Smasher is the Cyberpunk equivalent of Darth Vader. Yes, he's "special" and he's literally just a brain and a nervous system. He is, however, a Cyberpsycho but very high-functioning. He was always a crazy gunman, so implanting him into a full-borg body allows him to have the creativity of a human and the power of a mech.
He's not the only full-borg character in the Cyberpunk world but he's definitely the most well-known. People can survive full-borg conversions by undergoing therapeutic treatments ranging from seeing a psychiatrist, taking tons of drugs, genetic modification, etc. The issue is that not everyone can afford it, which is why David is such an oddity since he can take on so much chrome and still not have to do much to tolerate it outside of the last 2 episodes. So in a way, David is "special" but being special will never be enough.
After Edgerunner came out they updated the game and you can actually find Rebecca’s shotgun near the spot where she died. Adam smasher is also one of the final bosses in that game and tons of people made sure to kill him with Rebecca’s shotgun. ❤ miss you Becca
They already stated thag there's no season 2 and also in the game, Falco told the main character that David Martinez crew is done. They have left the cyberpunk world.

So cyberpsychosis is linked into one’s empathy and mental trauma/state so the reason Smasher is immune to cyberpsychosis is because he has no empathy and basically a psychopath
I love this story. It feels so raw and real. A certain emotion that you feel in the end is the worst feeling in the universe, worse than betrayal, worse than fear, worse than hatred. The feeling of reaching a goal or dream but still feeling fucking hollow inside because it's not how you envisioned it.
Well, David is one of the legends of night city now. If they kill Adam here, we won't be able to kill him ingame.
Just got back from seeing the band “Let’s Eat Grandma” (who sing “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” towards the end of episode 10.) Not only were they absolutely AMAZING live, but it brought back all those memories of this amazing show as well. 😅😢😊

Davids probably the most relatable anime character, thats what makes the ending so sad but also kinda happy at the same time

A detail that i love is how even after all that David died still being human.
Another thing to note. Doc told David only use the Sandy three times at max. Adam Smasher only used his Sandy three times during their encounter.
I feel like it’s sad because they all failed. David just wanted to see Lucy achieve her dream, but he didn’t know her real dream was seeing him live. So he sacrificed himself so she could see the moon and “achieve her dream,” which she did. But at the point it was pointless without David there with her. I loved this show, but also fuck this show lol
I realized after episode 4 that the trauma would be real. No Night City story has a happy ending. The best anyone can hope for is some sort of redemption.
Adam Smasher is essentially a sentient daemon at this point. There is precedent for a person to be digitized and to survive, but Adam was a sociopath before the procedure and so pretty much immune to cyberpsychosis. That's why his 'skeleton' when Lucy tries to use her custom quickhacks on him looks so demonic.

In the tabletop game and the lore Adam Smasher is like an end game boss apparently - just wrecks people left and right, in the video game he is still an end level boss but not too difficult from what ive heard.
Even though it was a smasher clip that introduced me to the show - THIS ANIME MOVED ME, it got everything right - flawless animation (the different styles in ep 6 come to mind) amazing soundtrack, relatable yet exciting story, excellent cast of characters, memorable ending.
After the latest patch came out in the video game you can talk to Falco and get Davids jacket and also find Rebeccas shotgun, there are a few other little nods to the show but the real legacy is the amount of people who bought the game because of this show (and some just to kill smasher from what ive read)
Ive watched a few videos of you guys and love your combined enthusiasm and Im glad you guys liked/ were traumatized by the show, its always nice to know other people feel the same way about a story - especially a good one, keep up the good work guys.
Adam Smasher is a *literal* killing *machine* who has spent almost a century destroying everything in his path. He's managed to grow old in a line of work where most die young. He's almost all machine instead of man and *demands* that any contract he's given have civilian casualties. A Night City Legend.
Adam Smasher is the final boss in the game 2077 so i kinda knew how it is gonna end soon as he showed up in the fight, but damn this was a hard punch
I know it's been a year, but in the game you can visit a lot of the places that are unique to the characters like their apartments etc. Also there's a bar called afterlife where most edge runners mercs legends etc go and well if you die a legend you get a drink named after you. There's a drink called David Martinez.
Totally with you guys on the show's length. Just another episode or two would have done some absolute wonders. They essentially had to cram a show with the storytelling potential of Arcane into half the runtime and you can really feel it. Think about how much more we would have cried with an extra episode of the post-timeskip gang?
Season 2 is called Patch 1.6 on Cyberpunk 2077 :)
The showrunners said this was a stand alone season/series with no plans for a follow up. IF there is a follow up likely it will be an anthology that is unrelated or indirectly related (like the characters seeing David on the news etc).
This show just came out of nowhere and it turned out to be so good. Such an underrated anime and I love how it doesn’t have a lot of the usual anime cliches. I hope they make another season
I'm so upset, no matter how many times I see this ending, when lucy imagines david on the moon again my eyes always tear up. Funny enough the first time I watched, nothing but now always.
Also a lot of people say the ending feels rushed and I kinda agree, it's always been fast paced but so much happened so fast and gets thrown in your face. Maybe that's why my reaction was neutral the first time around because there's so much to process but second time around you can focus on certain details

I like the bit of emotional detail that can be inferred from the Lucy moon tram scene was really just not at all thrilled about finally making it to the moon and being dis-satisfied because as others have said that really somewhere through the season her dream really just was to have a good life with David and the moon was just a side-quest
Sorry to say CDP Red has stated they will be no season 2. The show takes place about a year before the game. You can get David's jacket and Rebeca's shotgun in the game.
Smasher comes from the wars where everyone was running crazy amounts of upgrades. David was able to handle extreme levels of upgrades but smasher is literally just built different and was able to go all the way to being fully machine

You can find conclusion to Smasher story in game. There is also a little tie-in with Falco and what happened after (not much though)...
The whole point of the show it's the same of the tabletop and to some degree of the game : there's no happy endings in Night City from the dirt poor to the Mayor of the city you can't escape, it's a never ending struggle for survival filled with crime, backstabing and death in a beautiful neon city

CDPR and the studio who made this anime knocked it out of the park with this one, to the point where the popularity if the game was rising again.
In Night City all you can ask for is a bittersweet end and in this universe there is no plot armor and that is why this show is a masterpiece.

I don't know much about the world of Cyberpunk. But there are some cliches that could work to make a good story for a season 2 with David.
If they do an Arasaka Story cloning him to test his tolerance with Cyberware and occasionally him escaping... his journey would be discovering who he was (but with the hold back to question if he should think of himself as a new person or a countinuation from his former self [Like Gamora in Guardians of Galaxy or Starkiller in SW side fiction])
If you played the game, you will see Arasaka tech can make this possible, but CDred said that they won't make season 2
Arasaka actually has a machine called Soulkiller which uploads a human soul into a biochip. If you insert the biochip into someone, the biochip takes over the body with whoever’s soul is on the biochip. That could lead to a season 2 for David but it won’t happen because if they do that it will interfere with the canon of the video game which is not allowed to happen.
I thought she was going to take her helmet off at the end by saying "Wait for me, David."

The genre is actually called cyberpunk. There are shows like blade runner, altered carbon, johnny mnemonic(also played by keanu reeves).
Unfortunately the fight was done the minute they called Adam, David stood absolutely no chance against him and he knew that once he landed and asked Falco about "something" or a "favor" or whatever lmao either way it's a good but sad ending.

With Kiwi, you have to understand the brutality of night city ruins people, and she couldn't see her family with the crew was here, too scared that they would betray her due to the fatalism and defeatism of night city. Empathy is how you hold off going Cyber-Psycho, David had a lot of empathy which is why it took so long, and he didn't end up killing Lucy and everyone like Maine. Adam Smasher is a psycho before he got cyberpsycho. David was going to cyberpsycho because lots of symbolism through off with David fate like how it starts, and he is watching the guy going cyberpsycho and dying. Show definitely could use 2 episode

To add to this show, after credits are showing Lucy cries alone and looks into moon a lot... so I guess despite her dream came true, she is missing David :( Also, check video from the song Dawid Podsiadło - let you down, shows cool quick story of another character ... in my headcannon, somehow Arasaka finds Davids mind intact within the sandy and his remnant brain and uses it on their next prototype of a lab grown body with enhancements already inside. It takes a while for him to remember who he was after a year of being an Arasaka hitman and heads to the moon to find Lucy
They have said they have plans for more anime spin offs but I wouldn't expect a 2nd season for this one. The events of the game, cyberpunk 2077, take place roughly a year after the show.
The show takes place in 2076. The game is set in 2077. There is a lot of overlap with very minor characters from the show, but there is only some minor references to some of the characters from the show. There is more of Adam Smasher in the game.
Adam smasher is a beast. He was once human. And now he’s become something else. He also was the soul reason johnny silverhand died. Silverhand consciousness was placed into an engram kept inside arasaka. In the video game cyberpunk 2077. The main character, V in unfortunate events lead to that engram being inside V. And V and silver hand played by Keanu reeves seek revenge on arasaka and Adam smasher.

Studio Trigger only makes 1 season runs, they sometimes make a movie after a series...But they have not yet made a season 2 for their shows.
@Dos Cavazos basically if you want to get some closure to the anime you got to play the video game because Cyberpunk 2077 takes place not too long after this anime (so you get to find easter eggs in game like Rebecca's shotgun, David's jacket, and you even get to settle the score with Adam Smasher.) I highly recommend you do a playthrough of it because everything you see in the Anime is very similar to the video game, the show is such an accurate representation of the game!
Love that you had hope up to the final minute. Unfortunately cyberpunk rules stipulate punks make their rep not by how they live, but how they die. Glad you guys enjoyed it.

Couple things, (not bad, just info)
1) Adam Smasher is the main villan of the game, so I knew he couldn't die in this. How could he fight V if David killed him?
2) Falco is also in the game and that's why he didn't get alot of backstory in the anime.
3) Becca's line in episode 9, "I'm with you, into the fire" was showing the *ride or die* true love she had for him. Even though she knew he wouldn't love her like that.
4) The game is based on a tabletop game (like D&D) so the possibilities for new stories are endless, however the studio has already come out and said there is no 2nd season currently in development.
Seeing how smasher is a boss in the game. This is the best advertisement ever.

Spectacular show. Having played the game, already knew Smasher was gonna be alive, but damn, it didn't make it any easier.
There won't be second season. If you want to know what happens after you can play the game which takes place year later
I don't know why you needed Adam Smasher's background. Not every character in a story is made to be a fleshed out important character. They told you all you needed to know about Smasher, a legend who went full cyborg. He is there to show us the price of losing our humanity. Yes Adam Smasher became a legend, but he has no reason to live. A corporate lapdog who will never feel the thrill of living again. David became a legend, but he never lived for himself. The whole setting is so dystopian that people need goals to get anywhere when it comes to happiness. Live fast die young is sort of an ethos in this city.

If their is a season 2, I'm hoping for another group of characters/events to get attached to till the finale

If they did, it would be its own story, or connected to whatever the next Cyberpunk project is. Cyberpunk was never big on recurring characters...um...living characters, that is...
Adam Smasher is literally a one-in-a-million case, He survived war after war, getting more and more augmented, until he's now a brain in a jar inside a massive metal death machine of a borg body
