      I totally agree! I'm actually bored with the routines because you know exactly what they're going to do with an exception here or there. I miss originality, elegance, splits, leaps, various mounts, actual skills!!!! I know our team has tremendous talent and I'm so very proud of them but it's just gymnastics as a whole that I wish would change. Just my opinion. Go back to the artistry, not predictability!

    I think a "balancing" skill (handstand, some kind of pose like an arabesque or a needle.) should be a CR. It is no longer balance beam as it's "tumble on the 4 inch wide piece of wood."

      I think I did gymnastics for like... 2 years, when I was maybe 4? Aaaand mainly I just did whatever we were supposed to in order to get to leap into that foam pit....
      No "apparatus" leading up to it? Well, no "skill" - pretty sure I just scuttled along that tiny, 6" off the ground, 1/2 length beam then did some sorta EXTREMELY not graceful "dive/splat" into that pit.... Then usually wallowed around in that smelly crap (is that stuff when you think about it I mean it's not like they clean the FOAM PIECES in the FOAM PITS every week, right?! Gross lol)
      Yeah there's definitely a reason I got into horseback riding and jumping instead..... Lol

      One gymnast did a video where she tried training this mount, but was too scared to try it off of practice mats. I don’t blame her, but I think the mount might have been possible for her if she tried landing on the beam closer to her butt, rather than her lumbar.

    The lack of variety in modern gymnastics saddens me, but I don't know how to give proper credit to difficulty without encouraging some skills and discouraging others. It's very hard to balance objective judging with artistry and creativity.

    • @alizah8042
      @alizah8042 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      I think I saw someone a while back propose just giving a certain bonus to every skill a gymnast performs that was not a submitted element by any other gymnast, or more than one or two, the year before. So if no one has done a Teza I in 20 years, a gymnast who does it now will get its value plus a flat bonus, like a .1 for rarity. Maybe the bonus can even be linked to letter rating but that might be dangerous.

    • @jodavitow
      @jodavitow 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@alizah8042 idk, a lot of these skills require years to master. I think that would encourage unsafe practices just for the sake of extra tenths. Plus it would also make it so that everyone would be performing the same skill one year and then everyone moves on to the next easier skill the next year, and so on. I doubt it would actually generate diversity.
      It would also punish the one gymnast who was actually original to begin with by having everyone else in the field do their skill because it's an easy extra tenth.
      When it comes to beam I think something that might work is banning skills from fullfiling composition requirements.
      For example: like 90% of gymnasts get their spin requirement from doing wolf turns or a simpe standing spin with leg below horizontal (valued at A, the easier thing you could do to simply fulfill this requirement and move on). So if you're no longer fulfilling that requirement that way then you're forced to look into either other types of spins (L, Y, doubles, etc) or look into other skills that fullfil the requirement like the hip circles, jumping spins, flares.
      Same thing could be said for something like dance combination cannot be fulfilled by a switch leap + switch half, which everyone is doing too.
      On the long run I think people will experiment and after a couple quads everyone will be doing the most optimal or easier thing. So that would probably not be a long lasting solution. You could also add more composition requirement but I feel like the same thing would happen.
      The root cause of the change lies on the open ended system. Under the 10 you could do a 10 routine with a lot less difficulty than nowadays so people could play around with pretty, original, but inefficient skills(difficulty wise). Nowadays if you do that you're shooting yourself in the foot competitively. Everyone is trying to get as much difficulty as possible in the most efficient, less demanding way and with skills that minimize possible execution deductions. Naturally there will be skills that align with those characteristics and everyone will be doing them to be competitive.

    • @alizah8042
      @alizah8042 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@jodavitowI think banning things from fulfilling requirements is just as unsafe. But maybe there is a happy medium. You said it's not ideal but if you add back in a scale/balance requirement, and then also add in an originality requirement that can be fulfilled by doing any lesser completed skill. And to counteract the punishment for originality, definitely at the very least if you do a skill you submitted you should get bonus points in recognition for your innovation. If connections are still valued the same then adding in more components makes more room to think about routine composition, to connect skills or not to Connect skills, etc. I think that would encourage more creativity without encouraging gymnasts to go so far as to attempt things that are unsafe.

      How could I forget?! That *IS* the epitome of brilliant, photographic moments in gymnastics! I can’t wait until gymnasts begin doing wolf spin dismounts off the bars. Wolf spin vaults soon to come. 😆
      Edit: I prefer to call them spins versus turns as most the gymnasts I see practicing them in person look absolutely lost as if they have no sense as to where they are, thus giving them a dizzy, spun appearance.

      @murasakino101 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      Fully agree. I can see them being tough on beam, but seeing them in almost every floor routine is a bit much. I don't blame the gymnasts since doing one can be a better choice than a D-level pass at times, but there are so many other skills that could take it's place lol

    • @triffus
      @triffus 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I'm not a fan, and they have their place, but they should be downgraded compared to an upright turn on releve. With Wolf turns you can sit on your heel and it also lowers your centre of gravity. When I used to play on beam I could do a Quad Wolf Turn ( yes, I'm a boy lol ), but Upright Triple (Okino) was so much more inconsistent.

    And a triple wolf turn is worth an E... NERF THE WOLF TURNS. Honestly, we need to make a hold a requirement on beam. Add a new requirement for bars, beam, and floor, and add four (or eight) tenths back to vault start values. I miss great scores being in the 15's and phenomenal ones in the 16's.

    • @YuckyMama
      @YuckyMama 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I totally agree with everything you say regarding Wolf turns. We are all sick of them (I mean, if you’re going to give them a high value, then at least deduct for the crazy arms).
      I do disagree about the 15/16 values for scoring. Getting stuck on an absolute number led to the high-level stupidity of the 10.0 cap system. (I can get on a real rant about NCAA scoring). As a fan, I enjoy seeing women push the sport and any sort of plateau takes away the incentive to do so (the E cap on UB transitions means all innovation on those skills has come to a halt, same with the “dance elements” cap). So personally, I say let the women keep pushing the sport so that in 20 years, a score of 20 is just “good”.

    • @jodavitow
      @jodavitow 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A hold requirement will just make everyone do the simplest and fastest hold so they can continue with their routine and everyone will be doing the same thing again. That won't work. Kind of how everyone either does a simple spin for the requirement and move on or they do a wolf turn.
      Also I think woulf turns are properly valued at E. The actual problem is the E cap on dance skills which make it not worth doing other types of triple (or even double) spins. A double scorpion turn could easily be an F skill, same for a double ilusion but it's just not worth doing them because of the E cap.

    Honestly I actually don’t mind clear hip circles being a thing of the past. They don’t look very pleasing and nigh impossible to make them look fluid. Plus seeing every girl slam their pelvis against the beam just makes me cringe so hard. I’m really glad the uneven bars were moved further apart for this same reason. Some women were having reproductive problems later in life after slamming their pelvis so many times into the lower bar.

    Im still rooting for the REQUIREMENT of at least a moderately difficult MOUNT being a requirement for ELITE gymnastics. It just takes Sooo much skill & guts TO START your routine with a BANG like that, and there just isn't ENOUGH of a reward for athletes who DO it... It's just not right to me to see someone who friggin backflips to land blindly on the beam in order to mount & a girl who just... Gracefully hops up there ... Get such similar scores (for various reasons, I KNOW... But. Still!?)
    Mandatory TRICKY BEAM MOUNTS at Elite Levels !!!!

    This is what I think..... Wolf Turns should be downgraded. Why? Because you can sit on your heel and it creates a greater base of support than doing it in releve. Why does anyone thing we see SO FEW Okinos * triple turns * but so many Triple Wolfs.... because they are easier. I also think that they NEED to bring back the requirement for a balance element. Handstand, Needle... etc...... Gives beam so much more variety. Bonus points for Teza's and things that use the underside of the apparatus.

    • @jodavitow
      @jodavitow 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The problem is the E cap on dance elements. A triple wolf turn at E is fine. A triple Y turn at E is absolutely not fine. That should be like a F/G.
      Also I don't thing composition requirements will do anything. Everyone will just do the same simplest/more efficient skill to fulfill it and move on. If anything, after a couple quards it just might create even more skills that eveyone and their mother is doing.

    I like both the Tezai and the Colussi. The public has taken notice that these beam routines are dry, stale and non-exhilarating I'm not a fan of The "Thomas Flair" cuz that's really what those flairs are, the IOC needs to reconsider, re-scoring them and rewarding athletes for daring to execute them. A full pass consisting of a backhand spring w/ two (or in Dominic Moceanu's case, three) flip flops is played out.

    I see this restrictiveness in every industry across the board, it's almost as if those in charge seek to remove creativity, create conformity, and seek to control, instead of allowing spontaneity, creativity, and critical thinking to be included in any industry which requires creativity. Creativity should be allowed in many different formats, instead of one person who sets the tone for a specific creativity.
    In other words, it is the death of intelligence, replaced by a form of mind control. I don't think people realize how very deep this goes in the most simple ways, just so that they can have conformity, to make it easier, but when this is established, it causes the opposite effect, removing so much, that we won't even recognize what America once looked like. Innovation produced by creativity, is what brought America to its highest glory, because people were allowed the freedom of thought and speech, instead of political correctness. This creativity, and the innovative thinking, that brought America to its highest glory, will experience its downfall, due to creative conformity, produced by a small group, thinking it's just easier, instead of embracing critical thinking brought on by creative intelligence. All in the name of conformity, instead of unity. Let us remember, unity is when great minds of different facets come together, producing something better, which came about, because there was agency given to people because of creative processes, instead of pleasing a particular person or group of people, through political correctness.
