So it’s not an American problem it’s a gymnastics problem and in this case specifically a Valeri problem.

Her body type is the same as Simone Biles. Compact and powerful, which is what they need to be to perform at the level they do. I've never understood why she specifically was targeted and told she didn't look the "right" way. She's an amazing athlete.
Yea its weird this all came down on her. US women's gymnastics has been known for shorter, muscular/thick robust young women since the 80s and in fact thats what put us on the Oympic map and we started winning medals. A balance of weight and power is important for any athlete but there's generally two gymnast body types people fall into (men or women) besides being on short side which is always to advantage, people arw either very lean thin or compact thick powerful. In 21st century they restricted Olympics to 16+ yrs which also helps with both challenging the mindset the female athletes must look prepubescent as well as increases the length of the athletes' careers. I mean anyone is gonna be more well rounded happy life in college gymnastics though, its just not the same level of what you do, because you dont train 8 hrs a day, you are expected to take classes. It's not really comparable to elite competition/Olympic circuit. That circuit pretty much have to do think eat and breathe according to your routine, its incredibly rigid life. Of course she is gonna be more psychologically healthy at college, anyone would.
This is what it means to be fit. She's not thin, she's not fat, she's fit. I think we should just stop with all the thin thick and skinny fat, just fit. Cuz fit is healthy and healthy is beautiful.
Sadly this will continue regardless of what is said here... People judge based on looks because the TV and Internet has programmed everyone to take stock in someone elses appearance to cast judgement on them. Especially in any pro/elite level athletics. Respect your opinion as I 100% agree but nothing changes...
Call Up no, but this girl beat Simone Biles. Very, very few people can say that. Imagine if Katelyn and Simone were both in elite still? Katelyn has a much cleaner act on beam and floor, but Simone has a more difficult one. Katelyn was one of the best bars gymnasts of her age, far outbeating Simone. I dunno how well Katelyn is/was on vault. But yeah, it’d have been a heck of a duo, similar to Nastia and Shawn
Brady Andres nope !! Simone is the greatest of all time! She just took gold after gold at worlds, this girl could never be as great as Simone! Simone has gymnastics skills named after her and the longevity!
@@hanabae_ not at all. Simone simply didn't have the back injury. Many gymnasts have gotten unlucky in a fall, Simone's luck has simply run with her talent. Up until 2014, I really only ever heard about Ohashi, Biles was seen as second place. Simone may be GOAT now, but it is important to remember that for every greatest, there are always dozens who would have been better, had luck been on their side too. Simone and Kaitlyn are no different.
I remember always thinking how incredibly sad she looked, and no wonder. There’s a huge burden on these kids to be thin enough and strong enough and smile through pain. Hearing from others you are not thin enough or look good enough is heartbreaking. She look beautiful, have always been beautiful and I have never seen her as fat. That woman is 100% muscles. I am very happy she found her smile again. We live once and it is important to spend out short time on earth doing things we enjoy.
@eternity cosplay judging someone on the internet just shows how insecure you are. You can't really tell anyone something like that in real life cause you are scared, so you come to the internet where you don't have to face the guy you are talking with and judge them. Plus your first sentence doesn't even make sense, he/she probably isn't even introvert. You may be into skinny women who are very skinny and looks like they are starving themselves, but the orig commenter probably thinks a bit chubby women who looks healthy are in perfect shape. Judging someone as introvert just because of an opinion is very stupid to start with.
I used to ice skate and loved it, anxiety and worrying about what everyone thought of me took that enjoyment away. My coach would make comments acting like I was stupid because I didn't get everything right the first time, I couldn't concentrate as I thought everyone was judging me like people did at school. Although I don't do it anymore, I miss it.
I used to do gymnastics but I never made it far because I first broke a rib and still practiced even though it hurt the about 6 months later I hurt my back and now it's almost a year later and my back still hurts just as bad. It kinda sucks falling out of a sport that you love so much.
Happens way too often. But the re-discovery and experiencing it with a fresh perspective and different drive is can be as breathtaking as the leaving was heartbreaking.
Ballet was mit life until puberty kicked in and I grew too tall and developed "female" forms. I had Bulimia and an addiction on noradrenaline/ephedrine pills to lose weight... Nothing helped, I was out.. until now I"m having problems with my body and suffer from low self-esteem although my weight is normal but when a young person constantly hears "You're too fat, you're a walrus, stop eating" it's a form of violence and this trauma can last the whole life.
It’s ridiculous how people called her fat. She is clearly all muscle and SHES HAPPY and that’s all that matters. People are cruel but it’s only because they’re JEALOUS. Edit: For all of those people bashing me, a 12 year old for mistaking they’re and their DONE I fixed it! Edit 2: To the people telling me to f-- off and replying that I commented for attention and trashing U.S athletes, that hurts. First of all, just turned 12, and when you swear like that hurts even more. Second of all, I wrote this because I was a gymnast for 5 years and am still a huge fan of the sport, I also know the struggle and how much it hurts to be body shamed. That’s why I wrote this. And lastly, for everyone bashing U.S athletes, you can’t even imagine how hard they work. Skills like Katelyn’s or ANY athletes take hard work. A LOT OF HARD WORK. And to say they are “fake Olympian’s” and that they have “steroids pouring out of their ears”(honey thats talent pouring out) is not only incredibly rude but also very uneducated.
It’s so sad seeing children have their innocence taken over something that they once enjoyed without fear. I’m so happy to see this woman staying true to herself and stepping down to enjoy it again
She looks 10000x healthier and happier in the college gym than she did at the elite competitions. She’s beautiful and an inspiration to so many. Even non-gymnasts.
Inspiration to quit. And give up on your dreams because its too hard. Inspiration to use outside sources to determine what you want to manifest rather than believing in yourself and gping within like we were meant to.
She definitely has a lot of muscle but her fat percentage in her body isn’t “low enough” for the standard of most gymnasts. When you have fat over muscle, it can for sure make you look like you’re just chunky all over.
She looks like an incredibly healthy young woman her age. I can’t imagine they kind of pressure from the public. I played sports as a kid with that much pressure from a parent and puberty was simply enough to break me. I quit the thing I loved and I still regret that. I hope someday I can find a way to love it in a healthy way that she has ❤
@Luna Gabriella This is very true ..but in all honesty they should install more rules for versatility ..not every girl going to be the same..regardless of what they try to do their body ..and I'm sorry for you quitting.
They didn't show pics of her before she got stronger in college... when she was at her fattest and not competing. She was not sayinng 'she got big' about how she looks now. How she looks now is a result of hard work, strength and ... well a good diet too believe it or not..
@• mizuki • by american standards she is skinny since she’s thinner than the norm. however, what does it matter? her experience was that she was body shamed and her feelings about it is what matters. no amount of fat on a body justifies being shamed for having a body.
To me she is fit thick.. the thickness of those thighs is pure mussle. However more muscle means more weight and the thickness doesnt seem ideal for a pro gymnast. But who knows, maybe the extra weight gives u a steadier landing.
Much credit must be given to Ms. Val, her coach in college who nurtured her talent and became not only the best coach she had, but became her best friend as well.
You can see all the love in the girls faces when miss val is around them she not only seem like an amazing coach but a special friend to the girls and wish her all the best. ❤️🙏
What most people in the comments don't realise is that she is of Asian descent, short and muscular. Hence, she looks curvier than the rest of them. She isn't "thicc" in the typical sense. She's really fit.
Yeah those are just muscles every gymnast gets those when they are older. Because if she’s fat the Simone is also fat. But all I see in Simone are muscles and what I see in her as well are muscles idk what other people lol
Miss Val and UCLA has done an excellent job showing that you do not have to take a person's identity for them to be an amazing gymnast. Allowing them to be individuals and building off of that strong foundation can be a recipe for success.
@@kitoffour5783 Idk if you can get 1500 subs with no videos(good luck btw) but yea exactly gender equality and all that but can we please be aware that men and women are different
It’s hard to shake yourself out of a mindset when you’re so set on it. It’s traumatizing in a way it can take just one person to completely shatter your self esteem
Don't know what the standards are but if she considers herself or they consider her as "big" that is pure insanity. She is compact and solid. The gymnastic world seems to be a brutal one at the elite level. If these kids are being abused psychologically it isn't good for them or anyone. Confidence is supreme in this world and if that confidence is shattered or damaged it destroys them. She looks great and competes in college at a high level. You can bet UCLA was happy to have her on their team.

Katie Denmark it’s because the prime years are before you have puberty and all the old white men who run everything forget that it’s natural and their bodies should be worked with as they mature instead of just trying to be 10 years old again
It's because they are women and the muscle mass doesn't progress with height and weight in the same way it does with men. The best strength/weight ratio for women is when they are in their early teens. A boy at the same age is not yet at his optimal physique. But go ahead, I'm sure if it wasn't the white-patriarchy-cis-capitalist-western-corporate-ageist-fatphobic-christian, whatever high school level boogeyman you wanna throw out, biology would work completely different from how it works now. Keep woke.
Disgusting how adults treat these children who love the sport, to making them feel they have to win regardless of injury to their bodies. The physical pain they endure, the pressure to be thin, the body shaming, eventually makes them hate what they once loved and lived for. Katelyn was my favorite gymnast of all time and I’m 63. It’s a shame. I believe she would have broken Olympic records had she not competed while having those horrible injuries. She will always be my champion.
@@RebeccaJeffersonOAC any elite level sport is toxic and puts results above injuries. Not just the coaches and system but the players themselves! You don't get to be the very best because you quit when there's a little pain or a little injury. Does that lead to happiness? No. Absolutely not. But it does lead to results and wins. And that's what elite sport is about.
@@out_spocken That may be elite sports, but it just shows me that coaches are more concerned about the win than about their players if that's the case. It's not even intelligent to make players compete with massive or multiple broken bones because they'll likely never be able to compete again. When players in the NFL and other leagues are injured, they're put on injured reserve. No one would praise the coach if a quarterback who competed a previous year was ineffective the next year because of a gross injury the coach chose to overlook. Everyone would call him brash and careless. You want your player to live to compete in the next year, season, Olympics, etc. That's why I said it's not intelligent to make players compete with massive injuries. There's whiny players who will cry over anything like relatively minor injuries and just don't want to work. I don't think this was the case of the girl here. She had worked very hard for what she wanted to accomplish, but her coach was forcing her to work with extremely severe injuries. Did he want an Olympic champion who could compete numerous times or an Olympic champion who competed once and ended up being crippled? It doesn't even make logical sense.
@@anaisanais9461 That's life? Ok so it's fine to bully and pressure young kids to continue performing even when they have horrible injuries? Also idk how 63 is quite old granny age.
I think it should be solely based on how good they are at their trade: by all means more women should work to the top! I’d love to see that, as a woman
No, it's called puberty... this bs is like the model industry where models are expected to have 10 year old bodies and be 8ft. She got the fat where she is supposed to, I guess her trainer expected her to barely be on the minimum spectrum of healthy weight.
Miss Val with UCLA is such an inspiration and motivator for so many gymnasts. I first heard about her through Ariana Berlin's story, and just recently got back into gymnastics and hearing about how she helped Katelyn Ohashi is so heartwarming. She has done so much good in her career.
So relevant in the aftermath of Simone pulling out. Body image, mental health, sexualization, the self hate. Women don’t need to be saved they just need to be respected.
I remember in that interview she was asked if the US team had a group chat and her answer was. "I don't know, I'm not in it." That was so sad how she was alienated by her own team

Rosy Jones , if you're talking about the girl that got the first 10 in the gymnastics history , it wasn't her , it was Nadia Comaneci, search it on google
I cannot for the life of me understand why people, when they see someone happy, feel the need to destroy that happiness by being cruel to them... This girl is perfect just the way God made her.... They did the same thing to Naomi Osaka...
Sometimes those people need to feel better so they hurt others..many people perceives being mean as cool. Very sad. We can't change then, but we can change ourselves to be better to others. (:
My guess is because they go from training 30 to 40 hours a week as a level 10 or Elite down to a mere 20 in college! That alone will make any beat and batterd gymnast smile!
I was a figure skater for 15 years, classic "tiger mom" that wanted me to go to the Olympics. I ended up tearing my Achilles tendon and as sad as I was, a part of me was actually really happy I could be a normal kid again. I lost my love for skating and it took me years to find it again. This story hit really hard for me.
@@jazzowen2640 If you compete at an international level than you should understand that something as simple as being able to eat a slice of pizza or a piece of cake can make you "feel like a kid again" when it's something you've denied yourself for years due to training. What would me being 18 (which you are right about, I was when I quit) have anything to do with that? Your attitude is horrible.
a s all I’m saying is if you’ve skated 15 years, stopped but still enjoys experiencing ur childhood or whatever you would’ve had to have started at the age of 1 or 2 which I don’t find very believable
I hurt my wrist a few weeks ago but it didn’t look bad and I didn’t want to compete that weekend so I just kept banging it on things so I wouldn’t have to show my legs
That's why we should teach children to stay hard from the small age. I know there can be alternative place where everyone can be kind but that's not the reality now. Not yet. Strong person dreams cannot be destroy by people except themselves. Start with your kids. Start now.
OMG, this was heartbreaking. I recently stumbled upon her and was immediately impressed by her talent and joy, not knowing that was happening behind the scenes. Sorry to see her retire, but I hope that she found the joy again in gymnastics when no longer competing. What an incredible athlete.
This girl has a fractured back and two torn shoulders and is still the best gymnast I've ever seen, while I'm in perfectly healthy condition and I have never seen someone less flexible than me
Zaina Malkawi I agree, she’s one victorious person. Many people with that kind of injury would be out for a very long time or stop doing sports all together. Speaking of flexibility, don’t feel bad because you haven’t met me, I’m the queen of horrible. Don’t get me started on my dancing skills even though I keep on trying 🤦♀️.
How could her coach let her train, let alone compete, with so many injuries. Other people call it child abuse. Treating people like robots purely for reflected glory is appalling. As to food, she would be getting through several thousand calories a day being that active (one athlete I know easily burns 10,000 a day) so some junk food wouldn't be a problem. And as a coach they, she, should know that muscle weighs more than fat.
It’s actually really normal in the world of gymnastics. As sad as it is. The book Little Girls In Pretty Boxes really highlights it. Gymnastics is a very dark and dangerous sport than most people think. I’m a former gymnast and while I decided to quit to focus on cheerleading, I was almost on the level to compete and i had heard many many horror stories about the competition level of gymnastics and it did ultimately sway my decision.

One of the physical differences, as you were saying, is that men naturally have more muscle mass and can build muscle--especially in the upper body--easier thanks to higher levels of testosterone and the fact that the center of gravity in males is in the chest area, while in females it is in the hips and that, as another difference, makes it easier for women to build their legs. @@jellocat4100 exactly! I feel so bad for her.. she really didn’t deserve the hate
Her body type is the same as Simone Biles. Compact and powerful, which is what they need to be to perform at the level they do. I've never understood why she specifically was targeted and told she didn't look the "right" way. She's an amazing athlete.
She has the same build as Mary Lou retton she was explosive on her floor routine the way she danced was very kool to watch
Yeah
She was body shamed by her college coach her last year
She reminded me alot lije Mary Lou retton in her routines short an powerful
This is worded so beautifully. Thank you so much for making my day ♥️
I absolutely agree
Sadly this will continue regardless of what is said here... People judge based on looks because the TV and Internet has programmed everyone to take stock in someone elses appearance to cast judgement on them. Especially in any pro/elite level athletics. @@hanabae_ not at all. Simone simply didn't have the back injury. Many gymnasts have gotten unlucky in a fall, Simone's luck has simply run with her talent. @eternity cosplay I am pretty sure being someone who judges people on "the internet" is way worse than being an introvert
Judging someone as introvert just because of an opinion is very stupid to start with.
eternity cosplay Your friends must enjoy you a lot.
falling out of love with something that you love to do is heartbreaking.
that's depression for ya

That's life old granny
Someone should have stepped in and told her coach to stop. Players wont even compete with those types of injuries in the NFL. That is inhumane.

I’m legitimately curious what this person is doing to burn 10,000 calories per day
@@maxs1427 Powerlifting, kickboxing, and competitive swimming are just three of the sports that need a lot of calories to maintain the muscle. The more energy you use, the more muscle you have? The more you have to eat.

He literally cycles everywhere, and thinks nothing of cycling between Cork and the centre of Ireland to a small village half in nth Tipperary and half in sth Offaly (in case you want to look up distances on a map) to attend a weekend of re-enactment before cycling back again on the Sunday afternoon. He will also attend events in Britain by cycling up the to Ferry port in Rosslare, catching the ferry across to Wales and then cycling either to Raghlan Castle in Wales or down to London in southern England for a week long event and then returning to Cork in Ireland by cycling back. Katelyn, as a prior gymnast years ago in high school ( 3rd over provincial gymnast in Ontario Canada), you are such an amazing inspiration to SOOOO many! You've overcome so much scrutiny, yet have overcome it all. How ANYONE could body shame you are idiots!!! Your PERFECT!! Your floor routines, no one could match cause that smile was genuine. The very 1st Naomi/Simone 💪
I knew I had heard her name before, I had recently seen her Uni floor routine and loved it ! Couldn't believe it's the same person, she was so sad when competing at olympic level and she's so joyful now ! So happy for her !

Incredible to go from overworked and depressed, to having one of the most joyful floor routines I have ever seen. You wouldn't have known they were even the same person from that early footage. So so glad that the sport is becoming less toxic, it's finally fun to watch!

It's less toxic FOR HER because she is bringing elite-level experience and talent to a college-level activity. The elite level didn't change for her, nor did the collegiate-level change for the collegiates. Well, it didn't change ENOUGH.
She looked so miserable even tho she landed perfectly. So sad

She's solid. Girls got more muscles than most men and she's STILL feminine and beautiful.
I'm going have to disagree about the more muscles than men part
@@sourpops4419 Men and women are each strong in their own way. "Different" does not mean better or worse.
AJ no, as in it’s a cold hard biological fact that men have more muscle than women if they are trained at equal amounts, wether that be no training or years of it.
@@bichonnation9494 I'm aware of that "cold hard biological fact" lol. I was talking to someone else who deleted their posts and I wasn't just talking about physical strengths. They were saying something about how "women are actually stronger than men because. . ." I don't remember what they said but I was pointing out that males and females can have similar and different strengths.
