- Our 400 amp or also known as 320 meter socket was backordered for 6 months for our new construction temporary and permanent service. Checking in regularly to the electrical distributor, only to see the 6 months pass with no luck. Then I started asking questions when I was told it was now 18 months. Was it because I'm a DIY Homeowner? or is it because larger electricians in big companies get them first? This made me ask more questions and pick for information on supply and demand.
Then I realized WHY!

I got some 400 amps coming this July after ordering earlier last year. We put power on 350+ houses a year. None of my local (AL) wholesalers can get it together, looks like home depot, lowes, etc. are the only guys that are getting them. Guess they realized how much more they can charge for them.
If anyone needs one. Please let me know. I'm on the HOA Board and we actually had two extra one ordered by mistake.
Building in Montana currently and i share all your struggles. everything i need done is 5x what it should be.
We're all struggling but good thing is, I designed this house with a rough rustic feel so what I design and build fits the house nicely. Decisions of buying a sawmill already paid for itself 3x over as well!
I will say this…there is some correct information here to hold onto. That is -order early. I won’t say who I work for or what gear I sell but I haven’t received a 400 amp meter combo in a year and a half. We also can’t get a straight answer why.
Circling back to you.. any changes 8 months later in your court? Just wondering.
Contractors get it only by the job. And if the contractor isn’t running his own business he can’t order. Also what they do is fulfill half of the order and the other half goes on back order is what I was told. There’s a place in KS who is in US but that backlog is horrible.
Its in everything. Breakers, wire, you name it. Big box stores have resorted to caging and walking spools of wire to the registers.
Got ours last July. Had to overpay for the separate shutoff enclosure. $400 for a small can and breaker with 2 bus bars. There is some gouging going on.
Hopefully things have settled for you since. We fought through it all and are now in the house. We have to the end of the month to replace a handful of circuits with ARC fault nonsense that will protect outlets behind furniture at 87 bucks a piece. We have two 42 circuit panels. Not sure how many will need to be swapped...

@@jjgubb ordered online but I’m waiting for third meter to arrive. First two had broken insulators that hold meter base and line terminals to the housing.
@@h.jaredagnew2544 damn did they make you send the bad ones back? I wonder why they went bad. Interesting. I checked their stock on the website and it says 0 available. I need about 50 of them

I've been waiting 10 months however my order was canceled due to discontinuation of product. I cannot get any explanation.

this can be made for less than $60, plus cert would be $100. the problem is US.
Most of the shortages are being created
meter socket looked undersized for a 400 amp, 320 amp.
It's got the label and specs marked as ordered. Our power company tied into it as well. So it most definitely is one.

All accurate comments. I have a 200a meter socket combination panel as a back up. Waiting on a 320a meter socket. It's my opinion china has their hands in this market. Controlling our growth.
I'd say so since we put so much manufacturing out of our country. Now we pay the price everywhere. Pumps to power, food to waste. You name it. My channel will start showing the "made from scratch" and "home grown" content once my New House build is complete. I have a whole area/walls designated for my hydroponics system I developed back during the covid shutdown in 2020. Stay tuned!
If you have natural gas in your home, you never need a 320/400 amp sevice to a 5000sq.ft. home unless you plan on a workshop besides the house.and even then it'd have to be a machine shop with 2/3 people working in it. My opinion and experiences. Waiting on one for a new home right now for a guy. All gas home.i tried to talk him out of it,and here we are 28⁰ and no panel on the house that was started in Sept. But what do i know!😔😊
Hi Michael, we are out in the woods. No natural gas. We run a outdoor Central Wood Boiler for heat and have propane to cook and backup heat/hot water. There is a full garage roughly 40x40 full of equipment with a 100A sub panel. The house main level has a 42 Circuit 200A and the lower level the same. We work from home and my business has a server room that also calls. We prepared to be safe and not have tonworry in future expansions. Thanks for the thoughts!
