I've been doing elec-35yrs..you did better than my workers
Lol it took me almost 35 years to get this electric this far! 😂
Different codes to what we have here in Aus, obviously, but your explanation was informative and clear, easy to understand. You and the girls did a great job of this. Richard from Down Unda.
Thank you Richard!
Brings back lots of memories from several years ago while I was doing "real world" electrical work! Can't even guess how many hundreds of service installs ive done....but its a big number! Great video young man! For 99% of folks...they should let a licensed electrician do this....less stress for them! Looking forward to seeing how everything turns out in your garage! Take care, be safe and God bless!
Chad, you have a real talent for doing "How To" videos. I still remember your outstanding presentation on how to install screen in frames for windows. Thanks.
Thank you
you can put Polly string in with a shop vacuum cleaner use vacuum at one end and tie string to a plastic shopping bag be sure string will come off spool with out resistance start shop vac will suck the bag out the other end with poly string attached
Nice job. Very well explained. One thing I did 25 years ago, was to cut 40" lengths of that 2" or 3" PVC to place on top of the run before back filling the trench. This allowed the inspector a sight-tube down to the PVC and measure if they like. Put a few of those along the way and backfill. Smart thinking putting the ground rods in the trench-saved you 3' of pounding. Thanks for sharing
Great job, Chad! You are very thoughtful to share this knowledge considering nobody else has.
Thank you Paulla
You can judge a man by how easily he admits his mistakes. Great 'permit' recommendations. Now that you have some current out in that garage the pressure is on....................time to impress.
The power is not hooked yet
Hoping all is well with you and your family and Mama is healthy and doing great. Give them all a hug. Sending warm thoughts and love to you from Florida 🥰❤️
Everyone is well thank you Joanna. Hope you’re doing well too. Baby Hank is growing mommas belly fast!
@@9252LIFE 🥰❤️
Dude.... Thank you for sharing this.
I just finished digging the trench, and was laying the pipe with the cable earlier today.
Tomorrow I was planning on trying to get things wired in, so I'm hoping that this video will help me learn what I need to do, so I don't blow anything up, or burn anything down. (Just running the cables from the main breaker box, to a sub junction box, then a couple power outlets, and 1 light. More stuff will come later.)
Here in Michigan when installing new electrical service for DTE on a home you can use standard 90’s and 2” pvc for a 200 amp service. They do require schedule 80 coming out of the ground on both ends and ran 8’ up the pole side.
Excellent video and very informative and or educational. I am sure many people will be using this video to do this type of electrical installation on their property. Well, until I see you again in your next video. Have a beautiful, blessed day Chad and family. (David, Texas, USA)
Thank you David
Great job 👍👍👍. Thank God our local government has all these rules and regulations to keep us all safe. Peace Brother 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
😂
Very informative and great job explaining. I'm ready to upgrade my panel now.
Better sound quality but pick up a wind muff for that mic.
I had a wind sock but it was extremely windy out and I should have waited another day to record the video
Great advice and thanks for sharing this information great video footage plus the audio was amazing good job man and girls
Love the narration
Great job 👍🏻 nice to hear you man up and admit your mistakes. Rare these days. Setting a good example for your girls. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻
I’m always making mistakes and learning from them. It’s working for me. 😆
@@9252LIFE absolutely brother! That's how we roll 😃
Great job, looking forward to seeing the lights on. God bless
Excellent video Chad! Very informative and you still had some good humor in it. Todd from da U.P.
Thank you Todd
Interesting. In CA we do joint trench for utilities. In CA & ID one ground rod only, 3/4" dia.
I understand that Congratulations is in order for you and your Wife.? So Congratulations on your new member of your Family.
Thank you Chris!
Next time you find your wires are short going into your panel as long as the main breaker turns on and off to the right and left as yours appears to, Just flip the panel over and put the main at the bottom. (It’s only when the main flips up and down that ‘off’ has to be down(have installed those sideways))
YIKES! Learn from your mistakes.... good job!
Thanks 😆
If your meter box has a breaker, would that make a your main panel a sub panel
Merry Christmas happy new year hope the family are doing good wishing you good health happiness and prosperity! Miss seeing you posting
This was an awesome video!!!! Thankyou.
Good video m8 keep up the good videos and work. Hope you and your family are doing well m8 big love 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Jason!
Another good how to video. Thanks.
You’re welcome
We have to use schedule 80 in NY
i dont need this info but it was fun to watch hugsssss
Noice, another GX470 enthusiast 1!! cheers
Great video, thanks for posting it, I am getting ready to the exact same thing here in S. E. Michigan. can you tell me where I can get a copy of the diagram in the end of your video, the links to your other videos covers up some of the diagram. thanks
It seems to me that the exansion joint should be installed in the closed position if you do it in the winter. At least if the ground is actually frozen solid. If you install it in the open position and the ground thaws the pvc could potentially crack when the pipe gets pulled down into the ground again.
I think you're good though since it's to early in the winter that the ground didn't have time to freeze totally.
It’s set in the middle so there is plenty of slip either way. If the pipe moves 8” either direction we’re probably having an earthquake or something other than frost freeze ground movement 😆
@@9252LIFE Yeah. Middle is probably a good idea. 8 inches of frost heaving sounds like some really crazy weather for sure.
Quick question.
So I’m mounting a meter base for new service.
It’ll be on a mobile home, can I use struts to mount it. Or how can I do it the same way you did?
Thanks!
Not sure on that. That will depend on the code in your area
thanks for the tips and details! Very helpful
You’re welcome
what gauge of wire did you use from from your pole to your box. or did power company supply it.
Power company ran their own wire
Most utilities like a large metal sweep from the pole to pull the wires through. What code cycle are they using in your area? NEC 2020 requires a disconnect at the meter for first responders making the inside panel a subpanel.
Does the meter box need to be grounded
Good video but I would definitely check with your local power company to see their specs because this is a lot different than I have done in the past in several different states!
Did you see the spec sheet at the end of the video? Came directly from the power company
But each power company has different specs if they go by yours it could be totally wrong you should have added that to your video. A lot of places have to have rigid turning up a lot of places have to have schedule 80 turned up I have never seen a power company Supply the red marking tape etc. ...
From totally off grid to 200 amp electric modern living not so bad if the poop hits the fan all your struggles in the past will allow your family survive and thrive
I made it all the way to step #1, found the power pole. Now I have to dig a trench about 9 miles long to the cabin.
That’s gonna be fun! 😂
where did you get your expansion joint from?
Home Depot
Hind-sight being 20-20, I bet, if you ran out of the top of the meter socket up and into garage, and down into your load center, you would have had enough wire. Thanks for sharing
Most likely yes.
Forced Labor 😂
Great info 👍🏻
Hope you n Fam have a plentiful Thanksgiving 🎉
Thank you
Couldn't you get your grounding electrode conductor to any rebar that comes up from the footing,?
so my meter housing has a big hole in the top - about 2" diameter and 4 screw holes around it. is there a standard plate or something to block that up? I am going to have all my wires going into the garage through the back of the meter - it is a EV meter so I get cheap power, it only is goin gto handle 60A max.
Is it also okay to have my L1/L2 going in , L1/L2 going out, and 1 ground wire going through the 1 or 1.25 or 1.5 inch conduit knock out?
(6 ga for the line wires, another 6 (or 8) for the ground
Great job Chad! Could this be a career for one or more of your girls? I have yet to see a lady electrician. One of yours could be the first and it’s a good living too. Your daughters are such can-do kids, I bet they would be great!
I think they all wanna be singers and movie stars 😆
@@9252LIFE Well, ambitions have to start somewhere. My older son 48, wanted to be a pro-skateboarder but now thanks to many hours with Legos, is a house designer. My daughter, 51, never had much ambition at all but life’s surprises and difficulties led her into nursing as an acute cardiac care nurse and now she is a wonderful Nurse Practitioner.
My young son, 26, got a degree in film and communications. What do you do with that? Well he’s very happy working at the state cultural museum. Life will present opportunities for them. Hopefully they will make choices that lead to a good life. As parents that is always a constant in our prayers.
It’s just always fascinating how that happens. We try to give them a faith, love and some kind of a work ethic but they still must make good choices themselves. You and Mama have blessed your girls with much of all of those attributes.
Carry on!!!
PS I still miss seeing Issac being Issac. What a great dog he was. Taught us all how to relax and not sweat the small or large stuff!!!
much easier to put a plastic bag on the end of the string and hook up a vaccum cleaner to other end and the bag will pull the whole string through the whole system
thank you for this!!!
9252 and Gals. Merry Christmas to you all. 🌲✨️❄️. From the 👍. Best
Hey chad whats that white stuff on the ground.
That’s last years cold slop! 😆 But brand new stuff coming soon!
Chad you got this ❤
Good video, thanks for sharing, God bless !
Thank you
Why didn't you use a meter base main breaker combo?
We are going commercial on our garage and this is what was needed for passing inspection.
Wow youb have learnt alot now your good
I spend all the time watching this then made my call to a certified electrician
Don't blame you❤
I tried that. Good help is hard to find up here
Looooove this!!
POWER!!
I'm highly disappointed that you never explained the "Stick your tongue on it" method to check if it was live. Glad you have power out there now!
😂
No power yet as we have to do some wiring inside the building to make the inspector happy
nicely done (narrowly avoided having to rewire my mothers house). microphone needs to be closer to your mouth, like at 15:10 is pretty good, about 8 inches away, but if the wind is blowing, then 1 inch so your voice easily outpowers the wind noise. is your monitor set dark? quite a lot this video looks much too bright, kinda overexposed. for example eyes at 12:10, wow those are freaky (-:
The problem was that it was extremely windy and rainy that day but I had to finish it up and in the editor I had to brighten up a few things. When the edited video exports to TH-cam it changes the color tone quite a bit. I am taking a class on the editor now so I can dial stuff in.
Why would you not use direct bury cord so you don't need to use conduit all of the way between the two points?
Because it doesn’t pass the good ole code book… if it doesn’t get a pass sticker from inspector it doesn’t get power ran from electric company
@@9252LIFE that sucks! I forgot most places have codes they have to follow. Thanks for the reply
@8252LIFE - I understand why you made this video, well done. But i miss your girls. You know as a father i was interested how you teached your girls in this.
Yet when installed within home it bends fine on 18 inch 90. Plus, the expansion fitting is for thermal and movement from earth . Anything over 122 deg can't use PVC anymore.(An Attic )So, outside, on a roof, guess what? Expansion fitting .
9252 thanks for all the wonderful information
You’re welcome
It has been awhile , hope everything is ok.
Everything is going well. Thank you. How have you been?
everything is good here in Iowa, except for all of the snow.@@9252LIFE
Gee we only had vw bugs as field cars.😂
😂
Put a plastic bag on the end of the string and stuck it through with a vacuum
Did you guys stop posting?☹️
For now yes

Watch this video on some mistakes to avoid when putting in service. But don't use it as an installation guide. There are plenty of videos by real electricians that show you how to do a safe, neat installation. Why is he only running a 120 volt service? The inspector will not approve it and the power company will not connect it.
You must not have watched the whole video. I am running a 200 amp 240 volt service. I didn’t have enough wire to install the third wire as mentioned in the video. I ordered the wire
Hey, almost three months and not a peep from you all. Did you quit? Wife run off with Elon Musk? Daughters put you to work instead of them? Or chickens and goats attack and take over the farm? 🤪🤣🤪🤣
Didn’t quit. Just working like crazy and getting some stuff in order for the upcoming struggles we’re about to have. If the wife runs off with Elon I hope she at least brings back some dough! 😂 Daughters have not put me to work and are still working hard and getting their home school work done. Almost finished with the off grid cabin build so we can get that video out. The freezing temps have slowed us down a touch. We don’t have goats. Sheep, cows, chickens, cats, and dogs. 😆 Hope you’ve been well Dave! Take care
Ha Ha! I just remember the goats you had in the beginning. Hang in there and looking forward to your next installment!👍🏻
