Firstly I've done a lot of reading about the ion prisms and how to make them far more efficient than in this video, the rule of 2:1 and far more! The changes will be made before the next! :) Secondly this is likely the last video of 2022 here on the channel!! Hope you all have a wonderful new year and holiday season!! :D New year plans include a new Stellaris full playthrough which is half done already, new Terratech video asap and of course more Cosmoteer and airships conquer the Skies! Now it's time for hosting some family in my new house and far too much good food and drink!
First of the Ion beams are Hit-Scan (infinite velocity) you do not need to lead at all! Just press 'R' to enter rotation mode and click on the part of the enemy you want to obliterate. Secondly the damage fall of is a bit more complicated: Each beam coming out of a prism is treated as a new beam so the fall-of is not simply based on how many of the original Ion-Beams you have combined in total, but instead happens at Prism individually. Furthermore the strongest beam coming in to a Prism receives the harshest penalty while the weakest receives none at all. The math boils down to two simple rules to follow while combining ions: 1. Avoid combining more than 2 Beams at a time to avoid the 56% modifier. 2. Avoid combining beams of different strength. This means that an efficiently built Ion-Array usually has some power of 2 Ion-Beam components per final prism (i.e. 2,4,8,16,32...)
@@postron5649 when I say leading I was not referring to that exactly, I was speaking about leading the ships rotation to counter the rotation occuring during the fight so that the beams kept hitting the same location so rotating in advance of the change to lead the front of the ships position - I could have been clearer there I think! And yeah should have just used R. :P As for the fall off the 2:1 I mention in this pinned comment is exactly what you are speaking about with two beams combining into one as a rule, or two to one! :) Thanks for the tips, all that is what I have been reading so it seems the changes I've made before the nest video are all correct at least! ^^
Mine is called "Hellchambers" for similar reasons... It has two rooms that are squares that get hit with 16 ions each... When it fires you just see 2 squares turn red, the ion beam traveling to front of ship, followed by a cloud of dust where the enemy ship used to be... ^^
@@ledocteur7701 Sounds nice! I wanna be carful with modding this time, I always reach the point where it's essentially a new game... Which is fine, but at that point I can't compare balance anymore.
by all accounts I've seen, max efficiency is at 2 beams into 1. So if you want more, you want to send 2 into 1 gem, 2 gems into 1 gem, and maintain multiples of 2. So 8 beams would be into 4 gems, into 2 gems, into 1 gem that fires outward. If that makes sense. And they absolutely need to be even. If you have 1 stronger beam (say 3 beams went into 1 gem) adding to a weaker, it will get nerfed more than the weaker beam. Saving a step-down by having 2 or 3 final beams is fine and good, too.
Ah right makes sense, yeah changes will be made in the next video for this! Was actually looking up some posts since making this video - the curse of being rushed! :(
@@Lathland Oh it gets even more terrifying if you manage to loop the gems. Beware though the lag well be very much with you if you do a loop like that. :)
17:37 the falloff meens for every beam combined it looses 25% that indludes beems from other prisms for example 18:36 you have four beams feeding the middle prism witch makes its strength only 42%

glad to see you figured out the paint shading, it's pretty fun to do. keep the black on decal 3 so it's above all the other colours, and unless you can make it not very noticeable try not to make shades go through components or blocks
Regarding the decision between make the laser not rotatable and safe or rotatable and exposed: Why not both? Have a well protected spine, where the beams come out straight and two exposed crystals for steering at the very end. That makes it easier to hit smaller targets but bigger threats that may destroy the forward crystals can still be dealt with by turning towards them. Only downside that the crystals often have to be replaced because they can be pretty rare. There is a crystal factory though.

The very first ship I ever built in Cosmoteer had 32 Ions... 🙂 Mirrored Array of 2 16x cubes, facing in on themselves, for 1-8 Output Beams at 32-4 Strength each. My current plan (only bought game yesterday) is to have 3 output beams, 16 strength middle one flanked by 2 8 strength beams... And 2 minutes ago I thought of a ship that can fire it's ion cannon either while attacking OR retreating, you can just reroute the crystal path live... So it can exit either at the front, or around the back... Or maybe in turrets protruding from the sides so they have big arcs? Crazy game!
To clarify on how the Ion Beam Emitters work, the falloff counts beam proportions, not just beam NUMBERS. In other words, if the beams are not one-to-one, it will count the difference in the falloff. For instance, say you have a beam from two emitters merging in an Ion Prism with a beam consisting of three emitters. It'll count this as two beams of two merged with a beam of one, affecting all of them in the process. This makes CHAINING Ion Prisms a bad idea in terms of damage output. It LOOKS very cool, yes, though it's detrimental all the same. The ideal scenario, in this case, is if 16 are funneled into 8, into 4, into 2, in which case you will then have minimal falloff. I've found the time to essentially reach end-game with a build-limit sized ship with SIXTY FOUR Ion Beam Emitters paired down into four beams, and it just CHEWS through armor and shields alike with little issue, the only thing that ever holds it back is the defense it has, I'm still trying to do that effectively enough that it doesn't constantly get its "mouth" blown off XD

What you were doing at the end with your ion craft is 'fanning'. It's a concept that's used by player controlled railgun ships to absolutely eviscerate anything they look at.
I have a suggestion: I've seen on many beamer ships, they build it much like you did, but they also put a crystal at the front of the ship, since they can move around and aim like a turret. If the crystal at the front gets taken out, then you still have your current setup at the back to fall back on. And from what I've seen, diamonds are fairly common at the stage of the game you're at, so losing a crystal every now and then would be well worth the gained benefit of having the turret aiming for the beams. Additionally, it's less micro-management, so it improves quality of life.
At about 11:38 you called the Malal's Wrath the Malal's Will. That was a fun ship. (For anyone that doesn't know, Lath made a giant wooden ship in From the Depths called Malal's Will.)
Well def seems based on the future Lath bit at the start that you figured the whole power of 2 rule for ion beam combination I would recommend unlocking the large reactors though, a single one has enough power output to sustain up to 10 ion beams with a proper crew layout and any ion directly connected to the reactor will only need a single crew member to deliver power for full sustain As for painting and using fades, what I personally like to do is plan out the fades portion first to give the ship's paintjob a cool layout of how I want the elevation and sections to look before figuring out the color scheme, could be worth trying
Happy Holidays Lathrix!🎉 Love the giant death beam on the new ship, but the spinal weapon approach is definitely a major downside for hitting small targets. May i recommend redirecting a few beams to swiveling emitters placed on the outer two spikes? Would definitely help with the smaller craft and help you achieve that 2:1 ratio. Have a good one!!
I love the paint job. The yellow reactors definitely seem like eyes. If I were you, I'd use that gold trim effect instead of shadows, but it still looks great. If you're looking for a name I'll suggest: "The Eye Biter"
Really the only logical thing left is to build a big rail gun ship, but this is you lathrix, which is exactly why I hope if you build a sleneesh themed craft, you’ll give it nukes
Hey Lathrix, you should turn on advanced controls in settings! this allows you finer control over your ships, and even the ability to control a ship manually!
Lath as someone who played with lasers a bunch after seeing your first cosmoteer videos, you can put the actual laser bits at the back of the craft so they are super defended and then have a hole that goes all the way up the craft for the laser
Not only that but you can put shields inside the laser hole surrounded by physical armor for maximum defense (I suggest you make these shields isolated in the armor)
Just offering my two cents if the beams work the way it seems, each beam being reduced to .75^(n-1), then the optimal number of beams is 2 or 3 firing into a single focus, which then fires into the "gun" focus. These are the equations for it, using a total of 12 beams as a base, focusing into 2 crystals (with the exception of clusters of 4), which are then focused into the singular "gun" crystal. This is based on the arbitrary damage number of 100, making it easy to equate it to percentage. Starting from the left, the initial damage of 100; it then goes in order of number of beams, damage reduction, number of clusters connecting to a single crystal, reduction, adding other half of clusters, final reduction. 6 clusters of 2 beams ((((((100)×2)×0.75^(1))×3)×0.75^(2)×2)×0.75^(1))= 379.68 4 clusters of 3 beams ((((((100)×3)×0.75^(2))×2)×0.75^(1)×2)×0.75^(1))= 379.68 3 clusters of 4 beams ((((((100)×4)×0.75^(3))×3)×0.75^(2)×1)×0.75^(0))= 284.76 Strangely, this was the only one that didn't get the final reduction for combining the two foci into the gun. But, it ended up being the least efficient. Which leads me to believe that more layers with less attached beams is optimal. 2 clusters of 6 beams ((((((100)×6)×0.75^(5))×2)×0.75^(1)×2)×0.75^(1))= 320.36 Basically, clusters of 2 or 3baiming into a single cluster is the most efficient you can be without making each beam an individual weapon. Higher or lower gives diminishing returns. However, this IS fully dependent on if that's how they scale it. I could be completely wrong here if there's a variable I don't know. If it is correct, clusters of 2 or 3 aiming into a single crystal is infinitely scalable for high damage output. Just needs space. Edit: I'll be perfectly honest here. That took me like two hours to work out because it kept coming up with odd results lol definitely should have been sleeping. But, it was far too interesting of a puzzle to solve.
Nice video, love your cosmoteer playthrough. As a name for you new ship I suggest Deceivers Glare. That fits really nice with Tzeench and the ion beams. If only you could make the beams purple/blue. Happy holidays, enjoy.
The name that popped into my head for the laser craft is "Tzeentch's Maw" - or potentially some other name with "Kraken" in it - because from above with the paint it looks like some eldritch, cosmic cephalopod with its maw open, ready to consume. It also probably looks similarly horrifying to any poor vessel it is unleashed upon as it tears its prey in half.
As you say the prisms could use work but sweet jesus your designs are gorgeous. I have a lot of hours in Cosmoteers but can't make anything anywhere near this good looking.
My record number of lasers has 640. I used the built in mod by the devs that allows you to build ships 10 times the normal build limit. It had 10 cores, each having 64 beams. Whole system has 5 outputs. A single core by itself is 100% efficient with zero beam downtime and minimum possible crew, but all ten cores makes the game physically unable to keep up with all the crew commands to recharge the lasers, so half of them aren’t working. I couldn’t even turn off the beam because crew stopped delivering power to the four required bridges since the crew commands were overloaded with bringing power to ion lasers. (This thing took anywhere between 3000-4000 command points)
The new craft could be called "Tzeench's Vision" as the amount of eyes would suggest, and also it would be Tzeench kind of thing to see not by particles entering it's eye but rather leaving it.
I nearly died at the intro The bit where he goes "Greetings you person who currently thinks they're watching youtube" My roomate was watching X-files and the intro played right after he finished saying it lmao
Also a tip for the future, not only do large reactors produce more batteries, they produce larger batteries, meaning that its 9x more effective than a small reactor.
An idea to consider is to place ion prisms near the nose of the ship to aim the beams while keeping the rest of the design pretty much the same. Should the forward prisms be destroyed, the inner prisms can still fire forward, letting you aim by turning the ship itself.
The beams do ok against swarms. Against some of the weaker enemies, you just burn through them fast enough that you can just about keep rotating through them. My own build has more of a dragon shape. It needs a bit of work since the wings have a tendency to get clipped off despite being shielded. I'm thinking about trying a diagonal design. The one big thing that I have that you don't is crystals far enough up front that I do have some targeting without needing to rotate. There's a secondary crystal behind that can take over if the frontal crystal gets taken out. It also has a bit of targeting, but it is buried far enough that it is rather hard to reach. It is also more heavily shielded.
I think you can do this in real life, but with neodymium instead of "prisms" with fusion technology. Electricity moves through metal, which is why it has to be insulated, but instead of wires, tubes could maybe be more efficient, and produce less static electricity.
I've been watching a lot of your videos and I was wondering, what's your usual process for coming up with a ship design? You always seem to be able to make such beautiful ships that are still so functional.
I believe that you can daisy-chain ion beams across different allied ships using the prisms. Unless that was patched, but I recall somebody showing a hilarious absolute death star beam setup with about 4 or 5 ships combining beams into another ship, which then combined then again into an absolute mega-beam.
Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure the ion beam prisms are smart enough to not fire until they have a clear line of sight to the target (This should include the hull of your ship). So you could have the output prisms in free aim, giving you a little more accuracy. I actually tried to snipe a station while an asteroid was in the way, and the beams would not fire at all until I strafed far enough to the side that the asteroid was no longer blocking los, lol

I have two name ideas for your new beam ship. Either Kairos' Bite or Kairos' Third Head.
First of the Ion beams are Hit-Scan (infinite velocity) you do not need to lead at all! Just press 'R' to enter rotation mode and click on the part of the enemy you want to obliterate.
Secondly the damage fall of is a bit more complicated:
Each beam coming out of a prism is treated as a new beam so the fall-of is not simply based on how many of the original Ion-Beams you have combined in total,
but instead happens at Prism individually.
Furthermore the strongest beam coming in to a Prism receives the harshest penalty while the weakest receives none at all.
The math boils down to two simple rules to follow while combining ions:
The original look he had for it with the armor layout almost looked like the old scarab, just scaled up
Well def seems based on the future Lath bit at the start that you figured the whole power of 2 rule for ion beam combination
I would recommend unlocking the large reactors though, a single one has enough power output to sustain up to 10 ion beams with a proper crew layout and any ion directly connected to the reactor will only need a single crew member to deliver power for full sustain
As for painting and using fades, what I personally like to do is plan out the fades portion first to give the ship's paintjob a cool layout of how I want the elevation and sections to look before figuring out the color scheme, could be worth trying
The ion beam craft really resembles the wurgandal class dreadnought
Great content as always! Hope you name it Tzeentch's Cannons, you know, let Tzeentch stuff be Tzeentchy
The new Ship is totally a "Screamer Killer", the sound of those beams.
I like how future Lathrix refers to past Lathrix in third person.
The new ship should be named Tzeches illumination
I propose the name "Tze-entch-a-sketch" A bit of a mouthful but the idea of an Etech-a-sktech from hell makes me giggle.
Happy holidays lathrix. Hope to see you back soon
This is honestly the coolest weapon system this game has
loving the cosmoteer vids! hope ur holiday is going well :D
Btw I suggest you call the new craft “zeech’s eye” or something similar since the middle bit looks like an eye
Finally misses and lasers are a really viable combination
You can change settings to position your ships relative to target instead of absolute grid.
Cosmoteer is a series I wish to see continue far into the future
The Beam Barfer! No other name stands against that one
6 clusters of 2 beams
((((((100)×2)×0.75^(1))×3)×0.75^(2)×2)×0.75^(1))= 379.68
4 clusters of 3 beams
((((((100)×3)×0.75^(2))×2)×0.75^(1)×2)×0.75^(1))= 379.68
3 clusters of 4 beams
((((((100)×4)×0.75^(3))×3)×0.75^(2)×1)×0.75^(0))= 284.76
Strangely, this was the only one that didn't get the final reduction for combining the two foci into the gun. But, it ended up being the least efficient. Which leads me to believe that more layers with less attached beams is optimal.
2 clusters of 6 beams
((((((100)×6)×0.75^(5))×2)×0.75^(1)×2)×0.75^(1))= 320.36
Basically, clusters of 2 or 3baiming into a single cluster is the most efficient you can be without making each beam an individual weapon.
Tzeentch' Spider?
Although it has like, 12 limbs instead of 8, that's *pretty* tzeentchy.
Cosmoteer is a series I wish to see continued
Name suggestion: Whisperer of Fate
Sure, it's whispers are massive ion beams and the fate it fortells is a burny death, but it's got the act down pat.
Alternative title: Lathland constructs the Death Star.
Yay, I love long videos, especially for a series I love to watch
As you say the prisms could use work but sweet jesus your designs are gorgeous.
I have a lot of hours in Cosmoteers but can't make anything anywhere near this good looking.
Good old Light light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation
New year, new havoc and the same old terror of the cosmos. Cant wait
I nearly died at the intro
The bit where he goes "Greetings you person who currently thinks they're watching youtube"
My roomate was watching X-files and the intro played right after he finished saying it lmao
Is it me or did he just us the third laser to blast away the armour18:44
Oh this is a nice gift , we are blessed with the presence of Future Future Lathrix. this must be a joyous day
you have forced me to buy this game :) thank you SIr !
I am always on time with the Lathrix uploads!
Also a tip for the future, not only do large reactors produce more batteries, they produce larger batteries, meaning that its 9x more effective than a small reactor.
Well the new craft is definitely awesome I think it would be annoying to have to manually change the firing arc all the time
forge ship=tzeench "changer of ways"
bloated flagship=nurgle "lord of flies"
anvil=khorn "blood throne"
hammer=slannesh "horror"
You could adjust the 2 side beams to intersect with the middle beam at a certain distance, then the damage would be concentrated again
Great video and Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
I think i am watching TH-cam, however i am watching a Christmas episode of Lathland's adventures
Man lath, where did you get those Christmas lights?
And where can I get some?
I think you can do this in real life, but with neodymium instead of "prisms" with fusion technology. Electricity moves through metal, which is why it has to be insulated, but instead of wires, tubes could maybe be more efficient, and produce less static electricity.
I thought the shields looked like eyes. 13:13
at 13:00 it looks like an EMP missile and its looking so good
maybe tzeench's comet? since the paint pattern kinda looks loke a star pattern
You’ve made another ship that should probably just be called the Screamer of Tzeentch.
Merry Christmas!!! 🎄🎁 Hope everyone is having a good holiday and here’s to a happy New Year as well! 🎉
I've been watching a lot of your videos and I was wondering, what's your usual process for coming up with a ship design? You always seem to be able to make such beautiful ships that are still so functional.
I don’t know why but future future Lathrix is funny to me
Was expecting a Future-Future-Future Lathrix at some point lol
Bro is going to open the wormholes with all the future and past and future future lathrixs💀
I feel future latherix needs a otherworldly godlike name
If you want Monstrous beams, just see Hatter's glorious beam monstrosities.
Holy shit! We got to hear from Future-Future Lathrix?!!! What a gift!
"probably think" spot on
I got a name that’s kinda neat Fateweaver’s Vision since he’s past and future it kinda is cool to think the beams seer through your ship
Cosmoteer is a series I wish to see continued in the future.!! :D
