  • There's a renewed wave of emigration by skilled South Africans.
But this time, not everyone choosing to leave the country is a high-income earner.
Business reporter Ntokozo Khumalo has the details.
Tune into Newzroom Afrika channel 405 for more details.

I am also moving later this year. For me moving to Europe would be good for my career as there aren't many opportunities in my field this side. Safety is also another factor.

Not always such a rosey reality abroad, but SA's problems are compounding and it's getting ridiculous now. We already have to pay for so many extras that should be standard:
    - want a decent education for your kids with >30% pass rate, pay up for private school.
    - want clean water, gotta get those 25l bottles refilled.
    - want reliable electricity, better spend R150-300k on a solar system.
    - want some safety, pay up for private security and pay 20-30% more for the same house in a security estate.
Government decries privatization, they're communists so no surprise - but when you fail so hard at literally everything (education, water & sanitation, electricity production and policing in these examples) then the private sector must (and has) step in to fill the void.

Fortunately I saw the writing on the wall back in 2001 and got the hell out. Best thing I have ever done. I now call Australia home and couldn't be happier.

There's a shortage of labour all over Europe. Businesses are really struggling to get employees. There's just too many jobs out here to fill.

Well if your country doesn't want you anymore and clearly your taxes are stolen by government, what are you suppose to do. Would love to go back to the most beautiful country one day, but for now I have a 4 year old I need to give a future to and keep safe, something I can't do in South Africa.

With the rate of South Africa turning into a MAD MAX movie you could live in a place like Slovakia and be a fruit packer and still be better off with a job and be safe. South Africa only has the weather THATS IT.

South Africa is rock bottom now. The outside world is still going down to rock bottom. Give it another five years and lets talk again. Already a lot of my friends feel the walls closing in on them. Europe is very unstable at the moment. 💣

Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. All passengers from dreamland, please fasten your seat belt, we're about to land in the failed state of SA.
Once you have arrived in the terminal buildings and passed through customs, you may immediately make ready your weapons and take them off safety.

Government doesn't care besides they don't even track emigration!!! They haven't a clue the speed at which people are leaving or even what demographic eg young black teachers, nurses. They seem to assume it's mostly whites leaving. We already have a shortage of teachers when the next batch of teachers retires just as an example of how short sighted they are!!
