  • SA is experiencing a brain drain as highly-skilled people leave the country.
A UN report showed that between 2015 and 2020, just under a million
South Africans were living abroad, with that number expected to grow.
Wits School of Governance Professor William Gumede unpacks this further.

My sister is a highly qualified micro surgery theater nurse who assists doctors whom do surgery on unborn babies with various heart problems.prior to being born...she left SA ..years back ..as the health department wanted more black nurses. And not her so she moved to the USA..and she got snapped up...with brilliant high tech nursing job in her field of skill...she won't return...my other brother ..is a fashion designer...here in South Africa...also doing great...started his own company from scratch...was told3 years later it has to be 53 % black owned if he wants to keep his company going...or the BBE laws will fine him heavily...so he moved his company to UK.....he won't return iether..then my other brother was in finance...and was helping big big companies plan their way forward.with ways to increase their income and employ more people...and expand their business...then government said the company is not 53 % black owned..and it must complie with BBE laws...that company closed up and moved to overseas...and many lots good jobs... private companies..get really tired of government of South Africa..telling the companies how to run their own business...and whom they must hire... especially when government house is in a utter mess...and far far from being productive and having a from of order...

I was an immigrant to South Africa. I became a citizen. I voted to unban the ANC. I hoped I could carry on as a professional making a contribution. But things changed. I remained static in my job as the organization brought in the cadres. I sank lower in the pecking order with no chance of promotion. I resigned and went into consulting. Soon I couldn’t get contracts within South Africa because I didn’t employ black personnel in my single person cc. I found work with aid agencies. Then the aid agencies began moving elsewhere as they found SA had become difficult. At about the same time the robberies started occurring in our street and became more frequent. I stolen car and two motorbikes, cell phone computer etc. . After two break ins we decided to leave. I left when the ZAR was 5 to the $. Twenty years later it’s 19 to the $. The Zondo commission which gave us the horrifying news that the ANC had captured South Africa has only scraped the tip of the iceberg. Rolling blackouts, bankrupt municipalities, parliamentary inquiries on malfeasance, cholera outbreaks, water supply problems, violent demonstrations, looting and burglaries, student riots, Russian visitors etc. are all indicators of what has happened. I don’t regret a single day for making the difficult decision to leave.

I left SA 6 years ago and my net wealth was about 200k now my family has in excess of 4,5 million and I would love to come back to my sunny beautiful country bring back my wealth and invest and see my fellow South Africans on mass again. There are many like me. Why should we though? Ask the government this question it’s not just that I’m white although I do want them to answer this question as well (why can’t we just have proper equality under the law again). Why can’t you target those that have inherited wealth rather than just indirectly punishing all peoples of a certain race group different to your own. The principle is wrong and immoral and Mandela would be turning in his grave.

@@paballomolingoane2009 perhaps, but not before the entire economy collapses and most of everything that has been built up is destroyed. There might always be hope but it does not supercede reality. There are many examples of countries that never recovered, Zimbabwe for example. Besides the corruption in this country is much more embedded than people think, removing one or more political parties won't solve the problem, what we need...and the only possible solution is too radical and drastic for people to ever accept within a democratic context. So I don't see much hope as people lack the constitution to do what needs to be done.

It has now become clear to me that there is not only no future in South Africa, but SA is actually on the cusp of a total collapse.... The tax base will collapse and almost disappear in the next 5 years. In addition, the uneducated majority (they are uneducated because of the criminal cartel called the ANC government) will continue to vote for this criminal cartel....
Then the DA elects a complete idiot as their leader... I know that all politicians are stupid, this is after all why they became politicians in the first place, but even amongst these idiots, he stands out....

SA is one of few countries where some its citizens leave the county when the country experiences difficulties - instead of toughing it out and fixing the problems. In the bigger scheme of things - it is not very many people that leave. You don't often hear of Americans leaving their country because of the continual mass shootings there.
