  • Learning to paddle a surfski with balance, rotation and leg drive is complex. All of these components will help you paddle faster and with more confidence. Spending time in the flat water doing these drills will pay dividends in the rough water. Chest to bar rotation drill, single side paddle drill, keep your head straight drill, leg drive drill and using these in a progression.

Is this orange life jacket a law or fashion or what? I notice everyone has orange for some reason, and I brought a yellow one. Will I be coughed at? 😆

The Mocke PFD in hi viz orange is popular! But hi viz yellow is super cool, too. We have some friends with hi viz yellow PFD, and they really stand out on dark cloudy days like the one shown here: th-cam.com/video/7Ctyxp-8_XU/w-d-xo.html. As long as you're in a surfski, everybody will know you're cool, whether you're wearing orange or yellow... :)

Good on you for buying and wearing a PFD while paddling Surfski. Orange or yellow seem to be the most common colors. At first, I thought wearing the PFD versus having it lashed to the boat was over doing it but on more than one occasion it has made be visible to boats way offshore. On one occasion it gave me the chance to rest and get my heart rate down after attempting to remount the ski several times in a row in very rough conditions. The PFD is something you don’t think you need until you need it. The best Surfski paddlers in the world wear them and that tells me something right there.

All the cool kids are wearing either Mocke or Vaikobi PFDs, which are very thin, comfortable, and “so hot right now!” 😊

When doing the rotation drill actually paddle into the water to see shoulder power not arms. Rewatch Oscar video. Also your exiting too far back, start exit at knees...

Pausing with your paddle high pointing forward and way over to one side is counter to the paddle parallel to chest as mentioned in your other vid, neither Oscar or Ivan lawler advise this. It encourages late exits as mentioned above, as well as puts your COG over to one side by crossing both arms to same side.
When placing the catch from this position the front arm comes down in an arc in a stabbing motion rather than "spearing the water" aiming along the axis of the shaft. Imagine you are waiting and aiming a harpoon, thats how Oscar does it. Spearing gives least blade entry resistance, more accurate placement, furthest reach with increased nose lift and stability as a result of initial part of the pull having a downward bracing element, while stabbing can induce slapping with power on before full blade immersion it can also cause unnoticed short catches especially as cadence builds up. That chance for putting additional bracing weight on the blade being lost has been wasted in air time. Ivan uses the phrase that the power stroke induces a feeling of being pulled "up and forward" out of your seat. Just some thoughts to think about...
You do see some flatwater K1 paddlers doing this but they dont have to deal with side waves. Non the less it's probably a good pure balancing drill for flatwater..great vids by the way

Good video, good technique, definitely going to do well. Be careful not to bob back and forth or rather fore and aft. Keep the vertical axis through your head and spine still in relation to the boat, only rotate around this axis. Ivan doesn’t want you bobbing 😄

Barry is in a Gen 1 V10 here, a pretty tippy boat for a beginner. But the V9 could be a good flatwater beginner boat if you're comfortable on the water and don't mind occasionally taking a dip. It would be a good boat to grow into as a paddler develops...and by all accounts is a great downwind boat, too!
