Outstanding explanation! What I appreciate is that a single paddler will at times want to do a wide range of paddling types. Sometimes sprint, sometimes a hard couple miles, and sometimes very long hauls. It’s great to know how to adapt your own style to maximize power, efficiency, comfort, and of course, LOOKING cool. 😊

I am a long distance expedition paddler & very new to the surf ski scene. I was roped into signing up for the MR340 during my through paddle of the Mighty Mo. I purchased a Stellar S18S Osprey and getting the feel for her. Your videos are very helpful.

Love to hear it. Tune into episode 9 of the paddle pursuit to see an interview with an mr349 regular... should be out in 15 days :)

Thanks for the great explanation. Very new paddler here, watching your action without your toes moving on the footplate is very eye opening. Now I want Patrick socks too!

Great video again mate! I know that feeling of my boat is not long enough 😂. When I started I thought longer was better (probably cause it felt more stable as I was lower in boat) but everything you explained is 100%. The only addition is the angle of the footplate. I have found that those boats with adjustable foot plate angles do help people with ankle mobility issues.

Interesting video. I like the explanation of the difference between a flat water boat and a boat for the surf. I primarily due Flatwater paddling. I just picked up a think uno for flat water and have been trying to find the proper footplate distance. Being 16 in wide it's a little tight so I'm trying to maximize hip rotation without jamming up into the back of the bucket.

Great model! I don't have any good tips for being narrow enough to fit the elite level boats yet for better rotation besides adding in a slick substance on the sides.

I ran into Chris Chappell yesterday. He told me to add a quarter inch of foam to the seat which will get my hips up into the flare a little more although it will make the boat a little more Tippy. It is a fast boat even with my lousy form at the moment.

I like this video. One important component that you didn’t mention is that tight hip flexors and hamstrings make proper posture very difficult to achieve and maintain. Kayakers need to work on flexibility so proper posture can be maintained more easily. Maybe a video on some specific stretches to help with this would be good.

Does the back of your knee touch the hump in the boat when you extant with the legdrive? Today i placed my footrest one slot closer, feels that i have more power and control, but my leg doesn't touch the boat anymore.

Nope. Just like you described I have it pretty close so my leg doesn't go to literal full extension and make contact. Old school boats will have a larger hump so you'll touch it in a similar configuration but most modern open buckets you normally won't make contact.
