    Gentlemen, many thanks for sharing. Truly an interesting day for both of you. I'm amazed that you can get the Ski's repaired. I would love to see a video of you out in the repaired ski's. Take care, keep having fun.

    I had the same thing happen this summer to my OC-1. Surfing a fairly tame swell, I peeled out sideways and it stood up hard on a shore break. I got off the boat, the wave lifted me and slammed me onto the nose crushing it.

      @ThePaddleChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shore break + long boat can be devastating! 'Hope you and the OC1 are fully recovered now! We have each smashed an ama (th-cam.com/video/TmgUxuXoXuw/w-d-xo.html) and had some other close calls, but if we're going play, sometimes we have to pay... :)

      We are fortunate to have a very good craftsman nearby who can repair this type of damage. We don't have any repair video, and we've both sold those boats, but they look and behave like almost-new after repair...just a little heavier. We wish we had repair video too!

  • @apricotscrub
    @apricotscrub 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Didn't think headhigh waves could break skis so easily. Would the pu model be better to start catching waves with or is it too heavy?

    • @ThePaddleChannel
      @ThePaddleChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A couple of things to keep in mind regarding this video. A: These are open ocean craft, designed to paddle open water and to surf bumps, so they're not really designed for wave play. B: Both of those surfskis had some age on them (though we have had a 1-year ski break in the surf zone, too -- see point A :) ). Both of these boats worked great when the waves were long and didn't break hard -- but taking any of the open ocean surfskis into a surf zone with hard-breaking waves is risky. If you want something specifically for wave play, you might want to consider something like the Epic SLS 10, a Dolphin Surf Ski, or another model designed specifically for the surf zone.
      Otherwise, try riding the back of the waves, rather than getting on the face, and never turn sideways at the point at which the wave dumps the ski out from under you (like Rod did in this video). Best of luck -- let us know what you decide to go with!

    I am quite surprised at the damage on the second ski, slamming the nose into the sand you can understand, but I have been caught in the surf zone a few times on my ski side on with little damage. Glad they could be repaired!

    • @ThePaddleChannel
      @ThePaddleChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The waves can close out pretty hard at that inlet, and there was some definite separation of ski and paddler followed by a sudden and impactful reunion. :) That ski has been in the surf zone plenty with no ill effects -- it seems that was just one of those times when all the wrong things came together at the same time. But it's been repaired and is working great (but it hasn't been back through the inlet yet).

    I caught a good size wave against the wind, so I stalled but was determined to own that wave 🌊 Well I dropped in late and nose dived straight to the bottom 8-10 dept where I was HELD under😳 when I did surfaced, I gave the loudest gasp. The surfski was being blown back to me by the same headwinds that stalled me. I humbly accepted my smash nose EPIC surfski and called it a day. It too has been repaired and still surfs pretty good.

    That is a big fear I have if I get a boat. How do you prevent that from happening? Tommy

    • @ThePaddleChannel
      @ThePaddleChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have become more selective about when we go out through areas like this, and we've learned to follow waves in, rather than trying to catch them on the face if they are breaking hard. Also, if we do get caught on the face of the wave, we bail to the high side, rather than trying to stay with the boat and risk coming down hard on it. Taking open ocean skis into heavy surf can be risky, but we've found those steps do help mitigate the risk. 'Hope that helps!

  • @andreteixeira5635
    @andreteixeira5635 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    OMG! Is it normal to have a surfski torn apart in half just because of a capsize on a wave?

    • @ThePaddleChannel
      @ThePaddleChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are really two parts to answering your question...no, it's not really "normal". We've been dumped in plenty of waves with no problem -- on this particular day the inlet waves were pitching up steep and breaking hard, and we just happened to be in the exact wrong place at the exact wrong time. I (Rod) shouldn't have let the V10S drop out from under me like that -- when I came down on it, it was a little too much for it to take. We think the nose of Barry's V10 may have actually hit the sandbar -- at that time, the water went from 5m to 1m depth very quickly, and we think he pitch poled right into the bar.
      Keep in mind these particular surfskis are designed as open ocean boats -- the "surf" in "surfski" on these boats is for surfing downwind swell...not playing in the surfzone. So any time you take a lightweight ski like these into a surf zone, there's a risk. A spec ski like a Dolphin surfski would be a better choice for playing in the waves. For us, it's play and learn -- hopefully it won't happen again!

  • @PaddleDogC5

    Epic JUNK

    • @ThePaddleChannel
      @ThePaddleChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      We wouldn't agree. These are open water boats, not surf zone spec skis, so asking them to hold up in breaking surf is...optimism. We have seen other surfski brands (and OC-1s, too) of excellent reputation and construction suffer similar damage in similar conditions. The truth is, if you take a lightweight open ocean boat into a surf zone, you're taking your chances. But that's just our opinion...ymmv.

      We've run across videos and pictures of several skis (several brands, too) that have taken some catastrophic damage like that. The lesson here is to exercise extreme caution if we opt to play in surf zones in these open ocean boats. We even seen spec skis, which are made for surf use, getting smashed up pretty good...the ocean can be a mighty thing... :)

    • @rodclayton
      @rodclayton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That was 100% user error on my part. Since that day, I snug the straps up -- it is just as comfortable as having them loose, and it fixes the riding up issue completely.

      Sound advice. That was one of our first observations after reviewing first reviewing this footage. We now always snug the straps on the PFD before going out -- doing so doesn't decrease comfort at all. The Mocke PFD stays in place just fine if the strap are tightened properly.
      In truth, even with the straps loose, it would be nearly impossible to slip out of that PFD accidentally, but it does give one a heckuva chin rash if not tightened up.

    • @ThePaddleChannel
      @ThePaddleChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure the construction of the skis was to blame here. Both skis are older and have been pushed through some tough conditions. More a case of "just one of those things" along with some strong closeouts that got both skis hammered that day. Barry's surfski is a custom V10, made more for flatwater speed, and Rod dropped down on his V10 Sport pretty hard. One friend told us, "Don't buy surfskis," but they're a lotta fun, even if something like this happens every once in a while.
