The town was founded on 28 July 1865, when 150 Welsh immigrants arriving aboard the clipper Mimosa named the natural port Porth Madryn in honour of Sir Love Jones-Parry, whose estate in Wales was called "Madryn". Puerto Madryn is a destination for wildlife-lovers around the world. Visitors can take a boat to see the whales up close in the Valdes Peninsula and can walk among the penguins, observing their natural habitat, in the Punta Tombo penguin colony.

... and that is probably the best thing to do, book a trip, rather than staying in the town as we did.

(I live in Trelew, a city founded by the Welshman Lewis Jones, however to say that "almost everyone" speaks Welsh in Gaiman or Dolavon is a lot. I believe it is kept alive by schools that teach it, as well as the Eisteddfod, a cultural event not only in the Welsh language but also in Spanish. )

On the beach in Puerto Madryn you can see the caves where the original Welsh sheltered when they first arrived in the 1850's.

The Welsh colony part - was not well researched at all, and was rather dismissive. The town was founded by Welsh immigrants, yet the Welsh connection took about 10 seconds of coverage. Puerto Madryn really isn't difficult to pronounce either.

Hi Garth … what I was trying to convey … and probably failing … was that they hoped to set up a community in Argentina that they could live in a way that they thought was disappearing “back home”, which included creating an area where the Welsh language could grow and thrive. My Grandmother was Welsh and nothing would have made me happier than to hear people speaking Welsh. Unfortunately, certainly all of the people there who we spoke to, didn’t. ☺️
