The Naga peace talks are about resolving the decades-old insurgency in Nagaland which find its roots in the colonial era. On 11 November 1975, a peace accord was signed between the Centre and the Naga National Council (NNC) led by Angami Zapu Phizo -- who had declared Nagaland an independent state on 14 August 1947, a day before India's independence day -- who promised to give up arms. But several other leaders within the group did not agree and broke away to start their own rebel groups. On January 31, 1980, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), led by Isak Chisi Swu, Thuingaleng Muivah and S.S. Khaplang, came into being. They opposed the ‘Shillong Accord'. But differences surfaced within this outfit as well and so on 30 April 1988, the NSCN split into two factions, the NSCN-K led by S S Khaplang, and the NSCN-IM, led by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah. ThePrint's Yimkumla Longkumer and Angana Chakrabarti bring you this explainer on the history of Naga insurgency and the latest peace talks between the Centre's representative and Nagaland governor R N Ravi and the NSCN, which has again run into a spot of trouble.

“Naga Issue” pertaining to the unification of all Naga Inhabited areas of Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh or even Kachin of Myanmar together with present Nagaland into one umbrella call “Nagalim” is indeed a very Complex Geopolitical issue in South Asia.
Although I’m not a Naga but have been experiencing it since my childhood days in Manipur and Nagaland. We can’t deny the fact that Nagas have the glorious history and their fight for this important cause started before India’s Independence. There has been series of incidents that have killed hundreds and thousands of Nagas as well as the Indian Forces. This should have been resolved long time during those days of 1947 where adjoining States political boundaries were not demarcated or were not even in Indian Union. Afterall this one main reason is lack of unity and understanding among various tribes or faction of Nagas group and those days Govt of India in not taking this matter seriously.
Reason of complexity if Nagalim comes into effect is as follows:
    1) Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh will start burning as they do not want to lose any inch of land.
    2) All States are interconnected so co-existence will be an issue as there are many other tribes mainly Kukis will start another protest as they already have been blaming for ethnic cleansing in then Senapati district (Now Kangpokpi District) & Ukhrul. They already have started demanding Kukiland.
    3) Meiteis the valley dwellers will start another protest.. same will happen in Assam & Arunachal Pradesh
Owing to all these reasons there is complexity of the Naga issue and almost all the predecessors/ Govt of India have been lingering this issue for long. And trying to only show off that they’re there for Nagas peace. But all in vain.
I wish and hope this issue is solved amicably by keeping all stakeholders together so there won’t be another turmoil in North East.
Indian mainland medias and bureaucrats shouldn’t ignore this important issue and should give priority before it goes out of hand. I personally want that Nagas must achieve their long standing demands and may peace prevail in Northeast. Best of luck for Nagalim. Kuknalim 🙏

Govt. Of india don't have the guts to boldly solved the issue, they rather chose it to exist. Kukiland is not serious, it is incited by meities. Kukis in senapati and ukrul were granted refugees status by the then our first Prime minister of india, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Governor was bang on the truth. Truth can be bitter but sometimes we have to take it with a pinch of salt. Nl is low in all aspects of human development indicators despite being the second oldest state in the region. Can we really effort to pay legal/illegal tax to these UG groups. As claimed by the gentleman in the video that if the taxes so collected are legal than do they have any accountability towards the public who bear the brunt of these taxes. They collect these taxes at gun point, it has no legal warrant. Today if you want to call me anti naga so be it, I stand with the thoughts of the Hon'ble Gov. Time to call a spade a SPADE. Wake up Nagas, we have a man in our midst who has the courage to speak the truth, let's stand by him. Lots of love to Ms. Longkumer and The Print for doing this story.

NSCN talks for itself not for the state of NAGALAND and the NAGAS living in it. People of Nagaland made their choice in 1963 when Nagaland became the 16th state of the Indian Union and even majority of the underground groups came overground and gave up their arms and ammunition in the signing of the Shillong Accord of 1975.
A.Z. Phizo left Nagaland and went to London and became a British Citizen because the Indian Govt had exiled him. He was quiet when the Shillong Accord was on the verge of being signed and only then did IM group rebel against the decision. Please ask yourself who is really against the development of the Naga people. The Nagas of Nagaland are living in peace and it's only a groups or might I even say tribes that are causing havoc for everyone living in NAGALAND.
PRINT MEDIA please differentiate between people of Nagaland and NSCN and Nagas of different states, we might be under a broad term called "Naga" but we are different like night and day when it comes to mindset and culture. It's important because when people throw the word "Naga" around people automatically think Nagaland but truth it the people of Nagaland have done more to represent Nagas than any other group or region so that is a crucial point to note. I'm not throwing shade on any group but that is a FACT and nobody can deny it. People of Nagaland are tired of NSCN agendas, extortion and blackmailing and also Naga Hoho does represents the same agendas of NSCN so kindly interview people accordingly. Because of some chums the peaceful people of the state of NAGALAND get a bad name and reputation.

The ugly truth is that India being a democratic country failed to understand the meaning of democracy even though the Nagas declared her independence on 14th August 1947 one day ahead of India's independence and India did not paid any heed to plebiscite of 1951 where 99.9% voted for a separate country and sent over 1 lakhs arm forces between 1950 and 1960 to burnt down over 1000 villages, killing 1000s of Civilians even though India is very much against the Chinese occupation of Tibet and xinjiang. And the NSCN with Socialist principles forgot the true meaning of socialism where the system of production are owned by the state but the wealth are distributed equally among the citizens, instead of serving the public most of the high ranking officers started to accumulate wealth for themselves which automatically lead the public to stop supporting them. I think our Naga political issue is very complex and complicated.

We neer a free market and let's be honest there's no good example of a communist/socialist country in the world. People are not equal so how can we distribute wealth equally without discriminating someone. We cannot live life where the outcome is equal, we need to live life where the opportunities are equal.

It's funny when they say tax is their right. If the tax were collected for the development of naga people then why are they still backward? Only a handful of people are millionare because of the taxes. It's not even a tax, it is extortion, they kill truck drivers, govt officials if they don't give them money. Not a penny of that money worth billions collected for the last 3 4 dacade was used in development of the naga people while the officials of nscm live a luxurious 7 star life. If one inch is taken we are not the one who will remain still or silent and see the Nagas take our land. We are ready to die if the problem arises❤️🙏. Better to fight & die than see someone take over your house.
Plus our ARUNACHALIS & MANIPURIS brother won't remain silent as well. And if all the 3 states sentiments are hurt, the 3 states can economically block NAGALAND from all sides in the Indian territory so better not to take any steps which will compelled the 3 states to do so. If economic blockade happens from the 3 states the states will suffer very brutally so better not compelled the 3 states to do so. We want our place to be respected as well🙏like so you do.

India has become so arrogant. Has India forgotten why she fought for freedom from the British rule? Britishers has no right to rule over Indian just as Indian has no right to force Naga to be under India. Naga was never under India. Nehru himself admitted this fact. But sadly he sent army and forcibly occupy the land of the Nagas.

The ugly truth is that India being a democratic country failed to understand the meaning of democracy, Nagas declared her independence on 14th August 1947, one day ahead of India's independence and did not paid any heed to plebiscite of 1951 where 99.9% of the Nagas voted for a separate country. Indian government sent over 1 lakh arm forces between 1950 and 1960 to burnt down over 1000 villages, killing 1000s of Civilians even though India considered herself the biggest democratic country and is very much against the Chinese occupation of Tibet, Xinjiang and Hong Kong. The NSCN with Socialist principles forgot the true meaning of socialism where the system of productions are owned by the state but the wealth are distributed equally among the citizens and instead of serving the public most of the high ranking officers started to accumulate wealth for themselves which automatically made the public to stop supporting them. The Manipuri government on the other hand also try her best to disturb the peace process for her vested interests. We are forced to be Indian but at the same time face racism for our mongoloid looks. Perhaps our Naga political issue is very complex and complicated and will continue until the coming of the 3rd world War.
